In the knowledge-based clustering approaches reported in the literature, explicit know ledge, typically in the form of a set of concepts, is used in computing similarity or conceptual cohesiveness between objects and in grouping them. We propose a knowledge-based clustering approach in which the domain knowledge is also used in the pattern representation phase of clustering. We argue that such a knowledge-based pattern representation scheme reduces the complexity of similarity computation and grouping phases. We present a knowledge-based clustering algorithm for grouping hooks in a library.

The broader goal of the research being described here is to automatically acquire diagnostic knowledge from documents in the domain of manual and mechanical assembly of aircraft structures. These documents are treated as a discourse used by experts to communicate with others. It therefore becomes possible to use discourse analysis to enable machine understanding of the text. The research challenge addressed in the paper is to identify documents or sections of documents that are potential sources of knowledge. In a subsequent step, domain knowledge will be extracted from these segments. The segmentation task requires partitioning the document into relevant segments and understanding the context of each segment. In discourse analysis, the division of a discourse into various segments is achieved through certain indicative clauses called cue phrases that indicate changes in the discourse context. However, in formal documents such language may not be used. Hence the use of a domain specific ontology and an assembly process model is proposed to segregate chunks of the text based on a local context. Elements of the ontology/model, and their related terms serve as indicators of current context for a segment and changes in context between segments. Local contexts are aggregated for increasingly larger segments to identify if the document (or portions of it) pertains to the topic of interest, namely, assembly. Knowledge acquired through such processes enables acquisition and reuse of knowledge during any part of the lifecycle of a product.

Facet-based sentiment analysis involves discovering the latent facets, sentiments and their associations. Traditional facet-based sentiment analysis algorithms typically perform the various tasks in sequence, and fail to take advantage of the mutual reinforcement of the tasks. Additionally, inferring sentiment levels typically requires domain knowledge or human intervention. In this paper, we propose aseries of probabilistic models that jointly discover latent facets and sentiment topics, and also order the sentiment topics with respect to a multi-point scale, in a language and domain independent manner. This is achieved by simultaneously capturing both short-range syntactic structure and long range semantic dependencies between the sentiment and facet words. The models further incorporate coherence in reviews, where reviewers dwell on one facet or sentiment level before moving on, for more accurate facet and sentiment discovery. For reviews which are supplemented with ratings, our models automatically order the latent sentiment topics, without requiring seed-words or domain-knowledge. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first attempt to combine the notions of syntactic and semantic dependencies in the domain of review mining. Further, the concept of facet and sentiment coherence has not been explored earlier either. Extensive experimental results on real world review data show that the proposed models outperform various state of the art baselines for facet-based sentiment analysis.

With the preponderance of multidomain proteins in eukaryotic genomes, it is essential to recognize the constituent domains and their functions. Often function involves communications across the domain interfaces, and the knowledge of the interacting sites is essential to our understanding of the structure-function relationship. Using evolutionary information extracted from homologous domains in at least two diverse domain architectures (single and multidomain), we predict the interface residues corresponding to domains from the two-domain proteins. We also use information from the three-dimensional structures of individual domains of two-domain proteins to train naive Bayes classifier model to predict the interfacial residues. Our predictions are highly accurate (approximate to 85%) and specific (approximate to 95%) to the domain-domain interfaces. This method is specific to multidomain proteins which contain domains in at least more than one protein architectural context. Using predicted residues to constrain domain-domain interaction, rigid-body docking was able to provide us with accurate full-length protein structures with correct orientation of domains. We believe that these results can be of considerable interest toward rational protein and interaction design, apart from providing us with valuable information on the nature of interactions. In the domain of manual mechanical assembly, expert knowledge is an important means of supporting assembly planning that leads to fewer issues during actual assembly. Knowledge based systems can be used to provide assembly planners with expert knowledge as advice. However, acquisition of knowledge remains a difficult task to automate, while manual acquisition is tedious, time-consuming, and requires engagement of knowledge engineers with specialist knowledge to understand and translate expert knowledge. This paper describes the development, implementation and preliminary evaluation of a method that asks a series of questions to an expert, so as to automatically acquire necessary diagnostic and remedial knowledge as rules for use in a knowledge based system for advising assembly planners diagnose and resolve issues. The method, called a questioning procedure, organizes its questions around an assembly situation which it presents to the expert as the context, and adapts its questions based on the answers it receives from the expert. The utility of canonical correlation analysis (CCA) for domain adaptation (DA) in the context of multi-view head pose estimation is examined in this work. We consider the three problems studied in 1], where different DA approaches are explored to transfer head pose-related knowledge from an extensively labeled source dataset to a sparsely labeled target set, whose attributes are vastly different from the source. CCA is found to benefit DA for all the three problems, and the use of a covariance profile-based diagonality score (DS) also improves classification performance with respect to a nearest neighbor (NN) classifier.
