We consider bounds for the capacity region of the Gaussian X channel (XC), a system consisting of two transmit-receive pairs, where each transmitter communicates with both the receivers. We first classify the XC into two classes, the strong XC and the mixed XC. In the strong XC, either the direct channels are stronger than the cross channels or vice-versa, whereas in the mixed XC, one of the direct channels is stronger than the corresponding cross channel and vice-versa. After this classification, we give outer bounds on the capacity region for each of the two classes. This is based on the idea that when one of the messages is eliminated from the XC, the rate region of the remaining three messages are enlarged. We make use of the Z channel, a system obtained by eliminating one message and its corresponding channel from the X channel, to bound the rate region of the remaining messages. The outer bound to the rate region of the remaining messages defines a subspace in R-+(4) and forms an outer bound to the capacity region of the XC. Thus, the outer bound to the capacity region of the XC is obtained as the intersection of the outer bounds to the four combinations of the rate triplets of the XC. Using these outer bounds on the capacity region of the XC, we derive new sum-rate outer bounds for both strong and mixed Gaussian XCs and compare them with those existing in literature. We show that the sum-rate outer bound for strong XC gives the sum-rate capacity in three out of the four sub-regions of the strong Gaussian XC capacity region. In case of mixed Gaussian XC, we recover the recent results in 11] which showed that the sum-rate capacity is achieved in two out of the three sub-regions of the mixed XC capacity region and give a simple alternate proof of the same.

The effects of the two sampling gate positions, and their widths and the integrator response times on the position, height, and shape of the peaks obtained in a double‐channel gated‐integrator‐based deep‐level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) system are evaluated. The best compromise between the sensitivity and the resolution of the DLTS system is shown to be obtained when the ratio of the two sampling gate positions is about 20. An integrator response time of about 100 ms is shown to be suitable for practical values of emission time constants and heating rates generally used.

A Radio Frequency (RF) based digital data transmission scheme with 8 channel encoder/decoder ICs is proposed for surface electrode switching of a 16-electrode wireless Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) system. A RF based wireless digital data transmission module (WDDTM) is developed and the electrode switching of a EIT system is studied by analyzing the boundary data collected and the resistivity images of practical phantoms. An analog multiplexers based electrode switching module (ESM) is developed with analog multiplexers and switched with parallel digital data transmitted by a wireless transmitter/receiver (T-x/R-x) module working with radio frequency technology. Parallel digital bits are generated using NI USB 6251 card working in LabVIEW platform and sent to transmission module to transmit the digital data to the receiver end. The transmitter/receiver module developed is properly interfaced with the personal computer (PC) and practical phantoms through the ESM and USB based DAQ system respectively. It is observed that the digital bits required for multiplexer operation are sequentially generated by the digital output (D/O) ports of the DAQ card. Parallel to serial and serial to parallel conversion of digital data are suitably done by encoder and decoder ICs. Wireless digital data transmission module successfully transmitted and received the parallel data required for switching the current and voltage electrodes wirelessly. 1 mA, 50 kHz sinusoidal constant current is injected at the phantom boundary using common ground current injection protocol and the boundary potentials developed at the voltage electrodes are measured. Resistivity images of the practical phantoms are reconstructed from boundary data using EIDORS. Boundary data and the resistivity images reconstructed from the surface potentials are studied to assess the wireless digital data transmission system. Boundary data profiles of the practical phantom with different configurations show that the multiplexers are operating in the required sequence for common ground current injection protocol. The voltage peaks obtained at the proper positions in the boundary data profiles proved the sequential operation of multiplexers and successful wireless transmission of digital bits. Reconstructed images and their image parameters proved that the boundary data are successfully acquired by the DAQ system which in turn again indicates a sequential and proper operation of multiplexers as well as the successful wireless transmission of digital bits. Hence the developed RF based wireless digital data transmission module (WDDTM) is found suitable for transmitting digital bits required for electrode switching in wireless EIT data acquisition system. In this letter, we analyze the Diversity Multiplexinggain Tradeoff (DMT) performance of a training-based reciprocal Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) system. Assuming Channel State Information (CSI) is available at the Receiver (CSIR), we propose a channel-dependent power-controlled Reverse Channel Training (RCT) scheme that enables the transmitter to directly estimate the power control parameter to be used for the forwardlink data transmission. We show that, with an RCT power of (P) over bar (gamma), gamma > 0 and a forward data transmission power of (P) over bar, our proposed scheme achieves an infinite diversity order for 0 <= g(m) < L-c-L-B,L-tau/L-c min(gamma, 1) and r > 2, where g(m) is the multiplexing gain, L-c is the channel coherence time, L-B,L-tau is the RCT duration and r is the number of receive antennas. We also derive an upper bound on the outage probability and show that it goes to zero asymptotically as exp(-(P) over bar (E)), where E (sic) (gamma - g(m)L(c)/L-c-L-B,L-tau), at high (P) over bar. Thus, the proposed scheme achieves a significantly better DMT performance compared to the finite diversity order achieved by channel-agnostic, fixed-power RCT schemes.

Maximum likelihood (ML) algorithms, for the joint estimation of synchronisation impairments and channel in multiple input multiple output-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system, are investigated in this work. A system model that takes into account the effects of carrier frequency offset, sampling frequency offset, symbol timing error and channel impulse response is formulated. Cramer-Rao lower bounds for the estimation of continuous parameters are derived, which show the coupling effect among different impairments and the significance of the joint estimation. The authors propose an ML algorithm for the estimation of synchronisation impairments and channel together, using the grid search method. To reduce the complexity of the joint grid search in the ML algorithm, a modified ML (MML) algorithm with multiple one-dimensional searches is also proposed. Further, a stage-wise ML (SML) algorithm using existing algorithms, which estimate less number of parameters, is also proposed. Performance of the estimation algorithms is studied through numerical simulations and it is found that the proposed ML and MML algorithms exhibit better performance than SML algorithm.

This paper considers the design of a power-controlled reverse channel training (RCT) scheme for spatial multiplexing (SM)-based data transmission along the dominant modes of the channel in a time-division duplex (TDD) multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) system, when channel knowledge is available at the receiver. A channel-dependent power-controlled RCT scheme is proposed, using which the transmitter estimates the beamforming (BF) vectors required for the forward-link SM data transmission. Tight approximate expressions for 1) the mean square error (MSE) in the estimate of the BF vectors, and 2) a capacity lower bound (CLB) for an SM system, are derived and used to optimize the parameters of the training sequence. Moreover, an extension of the channel-dependent training scheme and the data rate analysis to a multiuser scenario with M user terminals is presented. For the single-mode BF system, a closed-form expression for an upper bound on the average sum data rate is derived, which is shown to scale as ((L-c - L-B,L- tau)/L-c) log logM asymptotically in M, where L-c and L-B,L- tau are the channel coherence time and training duration, respectively. The significant performance gain offered by the proposed training sequence over the conventional constant-power orthogonal RCT sequence is demonstrated using Monte Carlo simulations.

This paper considers the problem of channel estimation at the transmitter in a spatial multiplexing-based Time Division Duplex (TDD) Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system with perfect CSIR. A novel channel-dependent Reverse Channel Training (RCT) sequence is proposed, using which the transmitter estimates the beamforming vectors for forward link data transmission. This training sequence is designed based on the following two metrics: (i) a capacity lower bound, and (ii) the mean square error in the estimate. The performance of the proposed training scheme is analyzed and is shown to significantly outperform the conventional orthogonal RCT sequence. Also, in the case where the transmitter uses water-filling power allocation for data transmission, a novel RCT sequence is proposed and optimized with respect to the MSE in estimating the transmit covariance matrix.

Low complexity joint estimation of synchronization impairments and channel in a single-user MIMO-OFDM system is presented in this paper. Based on a system model that takes into account the effects of synchronization impairments such as carrier frequency offset, sampling frequency offset, and symbol timing error, and channel, a Maximum Likelihood (ML) algorithm for the joint estimation is proposed. To reduce the complexity of ML grid search, the number of received signal samples used for estimation need to be reduced. The conventional channel estimation techniques using Least-Squares (LS) or Maximum a posteriori (MAP) methods fail for the reduced sample under-determined system, which results in poor performance of the joint estimator. The proposed ML algorithm uses Compressed Sensing (CS) based channel estimation method in a sparse fading scenario, where the received samples used for estimation are less than that required for an LS or MAP based estimation. The performance of the estimation method is studied through numerical simulations, and it is observed that CS based joint estimator performs better than LS and MAP based joint estimator. A new physically based classical continuous potential distribution model, particularly considering the channel center, is proposed for a short-channel undoped body symmetrical double-gate transistor. It involves a novel technique for solving the 2-D nonlinear Poisson's equation in a rectangular coordinate system, which makes the model valid from weak to strong inversion regimes and from the channel center to the surface. We demonstrated, using the proposed model, that the channel potential versus gate voltage characteristics for the devices having equal channel lengths but different thicknesses pass through a single common point (termed ``crossover point''). Based on the potential model, a new compact model for the subthreshold swing is formulated. It is shown that for the devices having very high short-channel effects (SCE), the effective subthreshold slope factor is mainly dictated by the potential close to the channel center rather than the surface. SCEs and drain-induced barrier lowering are also assessed using the proposed model and validated against a professional numerical device simulator.

A low cost 12 T pulsed magnet system has been integrated with a closed-cycle helium refrigerator. The copper solenoid is directly immersed in liquid nitrogen for reduced electrical resistance and more efficient heat transfer. This ensures a minimal delay of few minutes between pulses. The sample is mounted on the cold finger of the refrigerator and, along with the surrounding vacuum shroud, is inserted into the bore of the solenoid. When combined with software lock-in signal processing to reduce noise, quick but accurate measurements can be performed at temperatures 4 K-300 K up to 12 T. Quantum Hall effect data in a p-channel SiGe/Si heterostructure has been used to calibrate the instrument against a commercial superconducting magnet. Its versatility as a routine characterization tool is demonstrated bymeasuring parallel conduction in Si/SiGe modulation doped heterostructures.

An in-depth knowledge about the characteristics of lightning generated currents will facilitate evaluation of the interception efficacy of lightning protection systems. In addition, it would aid in extraction of valuable statistics (from measured current data) on local lightning parameters. Incidentally, present day knowledge on characteristics of lightning induced current in typical lightning protection systems is rather limited. This is particularly true with closely interconnected protection systems, like the one employed in Indian Satellite Launch Pad-II. This system is taken as a specific example in the present study. Various aspects suggest that theoretical modelling would be the best possible approach for the intended work. From the survey of pertinent literature, it is concluded that electromagnetic modelling of lightning return-stroke with current source at the channel base is best suited for this study. Numerical electromagnetic code was used for the required electromagnetic field solution and Fourier transform techniques were employed for computing time-domain results. A validation for the numerical modelling is provided by laborator experiments on a reduced scale model of the system. Apart from ascertaining the influence of various parameters, salient characteristics of tower base currents for different kinds of events are deduced. This knowledge can be used in identifying the type of event, as well as its approximate location. A method for estimation of injected stroke current has also been proposed.

This paper investigates the problem of designing reverse channel training sequences for a TDD-MIMO spatial-multiplexing system. Assuming perfect channel state information at the receiver and spatial multiplexing at the transmitter with equal power allocation to them dominant modes of the estimated channel, the pilot is designed to ensure an stimate of the channel which improves the forward link capacity. Using perturbation techniques, a lower bound on the forward link capacity is derived with respect to which the training sequence is optimized. Thus, the reverse channel training sequence makes use of the channel knowledge at the receiver. The performance of orthogonal training sequence with MMSE estimation at the transmitter and the proposed training sequence are compared. Simulation results show a significant improvement in performance.

TWIK-related K+ channel TREK1, a background leak K+ channel, has been strongly implicated as the target of several general and local anesthetics. Here, using the whole-cell and single-channel patch-clamp technique, we investigated the effect of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, on the human (h) TREK1 channel heterologously expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 cells by an adenoviral-mediated expression system. Lidocaine, at clinical concentrations, produced reversible, concentration-dependent inhibition of hTREK1 current, with IC50 value of 180 mu M, by reducing the single-channel open probability and stabilizing the closed state. We have identified a strategically placed unique aromatic couplet (Tyr352 and Phe355) in the vicinity of the protein kinase A phosphorylation site, Ser348, in the C-terminal domain (CTD) of hTREK1, that is critical for the action of lidocaine. Furthermore, the phosphorylation state of Ser348 was found to have a regulatory role in lidocaine-mediated inhibition of hTREK1. It is interesting that we observed strong intersubunit negative cooperativity (Hill coefficient = 0.49) and half-of-sites saturation binding stoichiometry (half-reaction order) for the binding of lidocaine to hTREK1. Studies with the heterodimer of wild-type (wt)-hTREK1 and Delta 119 C-terminal deletion mutant (hTREK1(wt)-Delta 119) revealed that single CTD of hTREK1 was capable of mediating partial inhibition by lidocaine, but complete inhibition necessitates the cooperative interaction between both the CTDs upon binding of lidocaine. Based on our observations, we propose a model that explains the unique kinetics and provides a plausible paradigm for the inhibitory action of lidocaine on hTREK1.

In this paper we give the performance of MQAM OFDM based WLAN in presence of single and multiple channels Zigbee interference. An analytical model for getting symbol error rate (SER) in presence of single and multiple channel Zigbee interference in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel for MQAM OFDM system is given. Simulation results are compared with analytical symbol error rate (SER) of the MQAM-OFDM system. For analysis we have modeled the Zigbee interference using the power spectral density (PSD) of OQPSK modulation and finding the average interference power for each sub-carrier of the OFDM system. Then we have averaged the SER over all WLAN sub-carriers. Simulations closely match with the analytical models. It is seen from simulation and analytical results that performance of WLAN is severely affected by Zigbee interference. Symbol error rate (SER) for 16QAM and 64QAM OFDM system is of order of 10(-2) for SIR (signal to interference ratio) of 20dB and 30dB respectively in presence of single Zigbee interferer inside the WLAN frequency band for Rayleigh fading channel. For SIR values more than 30dB and 40dB the SER approaches the SER without interference for 16QAM and 64QAM OFDM system respectively.
