An instrument for simultaneous measurement of dynamic strain and temperature in a thermally unstable ambience has been proposed, based on fiber Bragg grating technology. The instrument can function as a compact and stand-alone broadband thermometer and a dynamic strain gauge. It employs a source wavelength tracking procedure for linear dependence of the output on the measurand, offering high dynamic range. Two schemes have been demonstrated with their relative merits. As a thermometer, the present instrumental configuration can offer a linear response in excess of 500 degrees C that can be easily extended by adding a suitable grating and source without any alteration in the procedure. Temperature sensitivity is about 0.06 degrees C for a bandwidth of 1 Hz. For the current grating, the upper limit of strain measurement is about 150 mu epsilon with a sensitivity of about 80 n epsilon Hz(-1/2). The major source of uncertainty associated with dynamic strain measurement is the laser source intensity noise, which is of broad spectral band. A low noise source device or the use of optical power regulators can offer improved performance. The total harmonic distortion is less than 0.5% up to about 50 mu epsilon, 1.2% at 100 mu epsilon and about 2.3% at 150 mu epsilon. Calibrated results of temperature and strain measurement with the instrument have been presented. Traces of ultrasound signals recorded by the system at 200 kHz, in an ambience of 100-200 degrees C temperature fluctuation, have been included. Also, the vibration spectrum and engine temperature of a running internal combustion engine has been recorded as a realistic application of the system.

In this paper we propose a circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna on a suspended substrate with a coplanar capacitive feed and a slot within the rectangular patch. The antenna has an axial ratio bandwidth (< 3 dB) of 7.1%. The proposed antenna exhibits a much higher impedance bandwidth of about 49% (S11 < -10 dB) and also yields return loss better than -15 dB in the useful range of circular polarization. Measured characteristics of the antenna are in good agreement with the simulated results. The radiation patterns indicate good cross polarization rejection and low back lobe radiations. The design proposed here can be scaled to any frequency of interest.

An equation governing the excess pressure has been derived, for an axially tethered and stenosed elastic tube filled with viscous liquid, by introducing the elasticity of the tube through pressure-area relation. This equation is solved numerically for large Womersley parameter and the results are presented for different types of pressure-radius relations and geometries by prescribing an outgoing wave suffering attenuation at some axial point of the tube. For a locally constricted tube it is observed that the pressure oscillates more and generates sound on the down stream side of the constriction.

The WiFiRe (WiFi Rural Extension) proposal for rural broadband access is being developed under the aegis of CEWIT. The system leverages the widely available, and highly cost-reduced, WiFi chipsets. However, only the physical layer from these chipsets is retained. A single base station carries several WiFi transceivers, each serving one sector of the cell, and all operating on the same WiFi channel in a time division duplex (TDD) manner. We replace the contention based WiFi MAC with a single-channel TDD multisector TDM MAC similar to the WiMax MAC. In this paper we discuss in detail the issues in designing such a MAC for the purpose of carrying packet voice telephony and for Internet access. The problem of determining the optimal spatial reuse is formulated and the optimal spatial reuse and the corresponding cell size is derived. Then the voice and data scheduler is designed. It is shown how throughput fairness can be implemented in the data scheduler. A capacity assessment of the system is also provided.

The attenuation of long-wavelength phonons due to their interaction with electronic excitations in disordered systems is investigated here. Lattice strain couples to electronic stress, and thus ultrasonic attenuation measures electronic viscosity. The enhancement and critical divergence of electronic viscosity due to localization effects is calculated for the first time. Experimental consequences for the anomalous increase of ultrasonic attenuation in disordered metals close to the metal-insulator transition are discussed. In the localized regime, the appropriate model is one of electronic two-level systems (TLS’s) coupled to phonons. The TLS consists of a pair of states with one localized state occupied and the other unoccupied. The density of such low-excitation-energy TLS’s is nonzero due to long-range Coulomb interactions. The question of whether these could be significant low-energy excitations in glasses is touched upon.

The electron-electron scattering contribution to the ultrasonic attenuation in potassium at low temperatures is evaluated using the Landau Fermi liquid theory. The scattering function is evaluated using the approximation suggested by MacDonald and Geldart. The results are compared with theoretically evaluated electron-phonon scattering contributions. The results show that the electron-electron scattering contribution is of the same order as the electron-phonon scattering contribution in the 2–5 K range. Below 2 K the electron-electron scattering predominates.

Silica nanotubes (SNTs) have been demonstrated here as a versatile host for controlled drug delivery and biosensing. The sol-gel template synthesized SNTs have a slow rate of drug release. Application of an external stimulus in the form of ultrasound to or chemical functionalization of synthesized SNT results in higher yield of drug release as well as yield of drug release varying linearly with time. In case of controlled drug delivery triggered by ultrasound, drug yield as function of time is found to be heavily dependent on the ultrasound impulse protocol. Impulses of shorter duration (similar to 0.5 min) and shorter time intervals between successive impulses resulted in higher drug yields. Confinement of hemoglobin (Hb) inside nanometer sized channels of SNT does not have any detrimental effect on the native protein structure and function. Observance of significant enhancement in direct electron transfer of Hb makes the SNTs also promising for application in biosensors.

This paper deals with the evaluation of noise attenuation due to exhaust mufflers fitted to the conventional piston engines. A discussion of the existing methods for the purpose, reveals the undesirability of the assumptions and simplifications implied therein. An expression for the attenuation of a general muffler has been derived. The classical theory of "sound transmission in pipes" [1] has been exploited to evaluate this "expression" for mufflers of different geometry. The quantitative effects of atmospheric impedance, and the engine exhaust impedance on the attenuation curves of a specific muffler have been found for an automotive engine. Finally, attenuation curves of a number of mufflers have been drawn and compared to suggest certain design criteria.

An E-plane serpentine folded-waveguide slow-wave structure with ridge loading on one of its broad walls is proposed for broadband traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) and studied using a simple quasi-transverse-electromagnetic analysis for the dispersion and interaction impedance characteristics, including the effects of the beam-hole discontinuity. The results are validated against cold test measurements, an approximate transmission-line parametric analysis, an equivalent circuit analysis, and 3-D electromagnetic modeling using CST Microwave Studio. The effect of the structure parameters on widening the bandwidth of a TWT is also studied.

We propose an effective elastography technique in which an acoustic radiation force is used for remote palpation to generate localized tissue displacements, which are directly correlated to localized variations of tissue stiffness and are measured using a light probe in the same direction of ultrasound propagation. The experimental geometry has provision to input light beam along the ultrasound propagation direction, and hence it can be prealigned to ensure proper interception of the focal region by the light beam. Tissue-mimicking phantoms with homogeneous and isotropic mechanical properties of normal and malignant breast tissue are considered for the study. Each phantom is insonified by a focusing ultrasound transducer (1 MHz). The focal volume of the transducer and the ultrasound radiation force in the region are estimated through solving acoustic wave propagation through medium assuming average acoustic properties. The forward elastography problem is solved for the region of insonification assuming the Lame's parameters and Poisson's ratio, under Dirichlet boundary conditions which gives a distribution of displacement vectors. The direction of displacement, though presented spatial variation, is predominantly towards the ultrasound propagation direction. Using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation we have traced the photons through the phantom and collected the photons arriving at the detector on the boundary of the object in the direction of ultrasound. The intensity correlations are then computed from detected photons. The intensity correlation function computed through MC simulation showed a modulation whose strength is found to be proportional to the amplitude of displacement and inversely related to the storage (elastic) modulus. It is observed that when the storage modulus in the focal region is increased the computed displacement magnitude, as indicated by the depth of modulation in the intensity autocorrelation, decreased and the trend is approximately exponential.

Purpose: To assess the effect of ultrasound modulation of near infrared (NIR) light on the quantification of scattering coefficient in tissue-mimicking biological phantoms. Methods: A unique method to estimate the phase of the modulated NIR light making use of only time averaged intensity measurements using a charge coupled device camera is used in this investigation. These experimental measurements from tissue-mimicking biological phantoms are used to estimate the differential pathlength, in turn leading to estimation of optical scattering coefficient. A Monte-Carlo model base numerical estimation of phase in lieu of ultrasound modulation is performed to verify the experimental results. Results: The results indicate that the ultrasound modulation of NIR light enhances the effective scattering coefficient. The observed effective scattering coefficient enhancement in tissue-mimicking viscoelastic phantoms increases with increasing ultrasound drive voltage. The same trend is noticed as the ultrasound modulation frequency approaches the natural vibration frequency of the phantom material. The contrast enhancement is less for the stiffer (larger storage modulus) tissue, mimicking tumor necrotic core, compared to the normal tissue. Conclusions: The ultrasound modulation of the insonified region leads to an increase in the effective number of scattering events experienced by NIR light, increasing the measured phase, causing the enhancement in the effective scattering coefficient. The ultrasound modulation of NIR light could provide better estimation of scattering coefficient. The observed local enhancement of the effective scattering coefficient, in the ultrasound focal region, is validated using both experimental measurements and Monte-Carlo simulations. The study of non-invasive characterization of elastic properties of soft biological tissues has been a focus of active researches since recent years. Light is highly scattered by biological tissues and hence, sophisticated reconstruction algorithms are required to achieve good imaging depth and a reasonable resolution. Ultrasound (US), on the otherhand, is less scattered by soft tissues and it has been in use for imaging in biomedical ultrasound systems. Combination of the contrast sensitivity of light and good localization of ultrasound provides a challenging technique for characterization of thicker tissues deep inside the body non-invasively. The elasticity of the tissues is characterized by studying the response of tissues to mechanical excitation induced by an acoustic radiation force (remotely) using an optical laser. The US modulated optical signals which traverse the tissue are detected by using a CCD camera as detector array and the pixel map formed on the CCD is used to characterize the embedded inhomogeneities. The use of CCD camera improves the signal-noise-ratio (SNR) by averaging the signals from all of the CCD pixels.
