The effect of a magnetic field on the flow and oxygenation of an incompressible Newtonian conducting fluid in channels with irregular boundaries has been investigated. The geometric parameter δ, which is a ratio of the mean half width of the channel d to the characteristic length λ along the channel over which the significant changes in the flow quantities occur, has been used for perturbing the governing equations. Closed form solutions of the various order equations are presented for the stream function. The equations for oxygen partial pressure remain nonlinear even after perturbation, therefore a numerical solution is presented. The expressions for shear stress at a wall and pressure distributions are derived. Here the separation in the flow occurs at a higher Reynolds number than the corresponding non-magnetic case. It is found that the magnetic field has an effect on local oxygen concentration but has a little effect on the saturation length.

Measurement of alveolar carbon monoxide (CO) presents a facile technique to estimate the lifespan, L, of red blood cells (RBCs) in vivo. Several recent studies employ this technique and calculate L (in days) using the expression, L = 13.8 (Hb)/P-CO(end), where (Hb) is the concentration (in g/dL) of hemoglobin in blood, and P-CO(end) is the endogenous production of CO (in ppm). Implicit in this calculation is the assumption that the fraction, f, of endogenous CO production due to RBC turnover is a constant equal to 0.7, which yields the expected RBC lifespan, L approximate to 120 days, in normal controls. In anemic patients, however, enhanced RBC turnover may increase f substantially above 0.7. The above expression then overestimates L. Here, we deriv an alternative tive expression, L = 3390[Hb]/322P(CO (end)-110, that accounts explicitly for the dependence of f on the rate of RBC turnover and thereby provides more accurate estimates of L without requiring additional measurements. Using the latter expression, we recalculate L from recent measurements on hepatitis C virus infected patients undergoing treatment with ribavirin. We find that our estimates of L in these patients (39 +/- 13 days) are significantly lower than current estimates (46 +/- 14 days), indicating that ribavirin affects RBC survival more severely than expected from current studies. Our expression for L is simple to employ in a clinical setting and would render the broadly applicable technique of alveolar CO measurement for the estimation of RBC lifespan more accurate.

Closed-form solutions are presented for blood flow in the microcirculation by taking into account the influence of slip velocity at the membrane surface. In this study, the convective inertia force is neglected in comparison with that of blood viscosity on the basis of the smallness of the Reynolds number of the flow in microcirculation. The permeability property of the blood vessel is based on the well known Starling's hypothesis [11]. The effects of slip coefficient on the velocity and pressure fields are clearly depicted.

A simple mathematical model depicting blood flow in the capillary is developed with an emphasis on the permeability property of the blood vessel based on Starling's hypothesis. In this study the effect of inertia has been neglected in comparison with the viscosity on the basis of the smallness of the Reynolds number of the flow in the capillary. The capillary blood vessel is approximated by a circular cylindrical tube with a permeable wall. The blood is represented by a couple stress fluid. With such an ideal model the velocity and pressure fields are determined. It is shown that an increase in the couple stress parameter increases the resistance to the flow and thereby decreases the volume rate flow. A comparison of the results with those of the Newtonian case has also been made.

Typhoid fever is becoming an ever increasing threat in the developing countries. We have improved considerably upon the existing PCR-based diagnosis method by designing primers against a region that is unique to Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Paratyphi A, corresponding to the STY0312 gene in S. Typhi and its homolog SPA2476 in S. Paratyphi A. An additional set of primers amplify another region in S. Typhi CT18 and S. Typhi Ty2 corresponding to the region between genes STY0313 to STY0316 but which is absent in S. Paratyphi A. The possibility of a false-negative result arising due to mutation in hypervariable genes has been reduced by targeting a gene unique to typhoidal Salmonella serovars as a diagnostic marker. The amplified region has been tested for genomic stability by amplifying the region from clinical isolates of patients from various geographical locations in India, thereby showing that this region is potentially stable. These set of primers can also differentiate between S. Typhi CT18, S. Typhi Ty2, and S. Paratyphi A, which have stable deletions in this specific locus. The PCR assay designed in this study has a sensitivity of 95% compared to the Widal test which has a sensitivity of only 63%. As observed, in certain cases, the PCR assay was more sensitive than the blood culture test was, as the PCR-based detection could also detect dead bacteria.

This paper deals with the pulsatile blood flow in the lung alveolar sheets by idealizing each of them as a channel covered by porous media. As the blood flow in the lung is of low Reynolds number, a creeping flow is assumed in the channel. The analytical and numerical results for the velocity and pressure distribution in the porous medium are presented. The effect of an imposed slip condition is also studied. Comparisons with the corresponding results for the steady-state case are made at the end.

Four furanoid terpenic compounds, α-clausenan, rosefuran (γ-clausenan) and diclausenans A and B, were isolated from the essential oil of the leaves of Clausena willdenovii. Their structures were determined by chemical and spectral data. The occurrence of a high concentration of rosefuran is noteworthy. Selenium dioxide oxidation of diclausenan gave an unusual product, identified as an epoxy-dicarbonyl compound.

Grewia tiliaefolia is widely used in traditional Indian medicines to cure jaundice, biliousness, dysentery and the diseases of blood. Bioassay-guided fractionation of methanolic extract of the G. tiliaefolia bark has resulted in the isolation of D-erythro-2-hexenoic acid gamma-lactone (EHGL) and gulonic acid gamma-lactone (GAGL). Hepatoprotective activity of the methanolic extract and the isolated constituents were evaluated against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The treatment with methanolic extract, EHGL and GAGL at oral doses of 100, 150 and 60 mg/kg respectively with concomitant CCl4 intraperitoneal injection (I ml/kg) significantly reduced the elevated plasma levels of aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase and the incidence of liver necrosis compared with the CCl4-injected group without affecting the concentrations of serum bilirubin and hepatic markers. EHGL and GAGL significantly inhibited the elevated levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and glutathione in liver homogenates. Histology of the liver tissues of the extract and isolated constituents treated groups showed the presence of normal hepatic cords, absence of necrosis and fatty infiltration as similar to the normal control. The results revealed that the hepatoprotective activity of EHGL is significant as similar to the standard drug silymarin. To clarify the influence of the extract and isolated constituents on the protection of oxidative-hepatic damage, we examined in vitro antioxidant properties of the test compounds. The extract and the constituents showed significant free radical scavenging activity. These results suggest that the extract as well as the constituents could protect the hepatocytes from CCl4-induced liver damage perhaps, by their anti-oxidative effect on hepatocytes, hence eliminating the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites from CCl4, (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The qualitative and quantitative aspects of the proteins of the silkworm blood were studied by the technique of agarophoresis. The blood of larvae at the final stage revealed the presence of six different protein zones. Considerable differences in the patterns were observed at different stages of growth. There was an increase in the total nitrogen of the blood up to the 5th instar and then came a sudden decrease in the one-day old pupae. Nitrogen concentration was at its highest in egg 1 stage and the electrophoretic pattern closely corresponded to the final larval pattern. Results indicate to the involvement of silk glands in the synthesis and breakdown of a protein designated as protein 5.

In this study, we derive a fast, novel time-domain algorithm to compute the nth-order moment of the power spectral density of the photoelectric current as measured in laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF). It is well established that in the LDF literature these moments are closely related to fundamental physiological parameters, i.e. concentration of moving erythrocytes and blood flow. In particular, we take advantage of the link between moments in the Fourier domain and fractional derivatives in the temporal domain. Using Parseval's theorem, we establish an exact analytical equivalence between the time-domain expression and the conventional frequency-domain counterpart. Moreover, we demonstrate the appropriateness of estimating the zeroth-, first- and second-order moments using Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, we briefly discuss the feasibility of implementing the proposed algorithm in hardware.

Diabetes is a serious disease during which the body's production and use of insulin is impaired, causing glucose concentration level toincrease in the bloodstream. Regulating blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible, leads to a substantial decrease in long term complications of diabetes. In this paper, an intelligent neural network on-line optimal feedback treatment strategy based on nonlinear optimal control theory is presented for the disease using subcutaneous treatment strategy. A simple mathematical model of the nonlinear dynamics of glucose and insulin interaction in the blood system is considered based on the Bergman's minimal model. A glucose infusion term representing the effect of glucose intake resulting from a meal is introduced into the model equations. The efficiency of the proposed controllers is shown taking random parameters and random initial conditions in presence of physical disturbances like food intake. A comparison study with linear quadratic regulator theory brings Out the advantages of the nonlinear control synthesis approach. Simulation results show that unlike linear optimal control, the proposed on-line continuous infusion strategy never leads to severe hypoglycemia problems.
