The charge-transfer complexes of I-2 with the n-donors diethyl ether and diethyl sulfide were studied at the Hartree-Fock and MP2 levels. The structures were fully optimized using the 3-21G((*)) basis set as well as with effective core potentials. The calculations consistently yield a C-2v structure for the ether-I-2 complex, but an unsymmetrical form for the sulfide-I-2 complex. A natural bond orbital analysis and the BSSE-corrected complexation energies reveal stronger interactions in the sulfide complex. The computed orbital energies of the monomers and complexes reproduce the trends in experimentally observed vertical ionization potentials.

The He I photoelectron spectrum of the diethyl ether-ICl complex has been obtained. The oxygen orbitals are shifted to higher binding energies and that of ICl to lower binding energies owing to complex formation. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations of the complex molecule showed that the bonding is between the sigma-type lone pair of oxygen and the I atom and that the complex has C-2v symmetry. The binding energy of the complex is computed to be 8.06 kcal mol(-1) at the MP2/3-21G* level. The orbital energies obtained from the photoelectron spectra of the complex are compared and assigned with orbital energies obtained by MO calculations. Natural bond orbital analysis (NBO) shows that charge transfer is from the sigma-type oxygen lone pair to the iodine atom and the magnitude of charge transfer is 0.0744 e.

The He I photoelectron spectra of bromine, methylamine, and their complex have been obtained, and the spectra show that lone-pair orbital energy of nitrogen in methylamine is stabilized by 1.8 eV and the bromine orbital energies are destabilized by about 0.5 eV due to complexation. Ab initio calculations have been performed on the charge-transfer complexes of Br-2 with ammonia and methyl-, dimethyl-, and trimethylamines at the 3-21G*, 6-311G, and 6-311G* levels and also with effective core potentials. Calculations predict donor and acceptor orbital energy shifts upon complexation, and there is a reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental results. Complexation energies have been corrected for BSSE. Frequency analysis has confirmed that ammonia and trimethylamine form complexes with C-3v symmetry and methylamine and dimethylamine with C-s symmetry. Calculations reveal that the lone-pair orbital of nitrogen in amine and the sigma* orbital of Br-2 are involved in the charge-transfer interaction. LANL1DZ basis seems to be consistent and give a reliable estimate of the complexation energy. The computed complexation energies, orbital energy shifts, and natural bond orbital analysis show that the strength of the complex gradually increases from ammonia to trimethylamine.

This paper reports ab intio, DFT and transition state theory (TST) calculations on HF, HCI and CIF elimination reactions from CH2Cl-CH2F molecule. Both the ground state and the transition state for HX elimination reactions have been optimized at HF, MP2 and DFT calculations with 6-31G*, 6-31G** and 6-311++G** basis sets. In addition, CCSD(T) single point calculations were carried out with MP2/6-311++G** optimized geometry for more accurate determination of the energies of the minima and transition state, compared to the other methods employed here. Classical barriers are converted to Arrhenius activation energy by TST calculations for comparisons with experimental results. The pre-exponential factors, A, calculated at all levels of theory are significantly larger than the experimental values. For activation energy, E-a DFT gives good results for HF elimination, within 4-8 W mol(-1) from experimental values. None of the methods employed, including CCSD(T), give comparable results for HCI elimination reactions. However, rate constants calculated by CCSD(T) method are in very good agreement with experiment for HCI elimination and they are in reasonable agreement for HF elimination reactions. Due to the strong correlation between A and E., the rate constants could be fit to a lower A and E-a (as given by experimental fitting, corresponding to a tight TS) or to larger A and E-a (as given by high level ab initio calculations, corresponding to a loose TS). The barrier for CIF elimination is determined to be 607 U mol(-1) at HF level and it is unlikely to be important for CH2FCH2Cl. Results for other CH2X-CH2Y (X,Y = F/Cl) are included for comparison.

Non-covalent halogen-bonding interactions between n cloud of acetylene (C2H2) and chlorine atom of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) have been investigated using matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemical computations. The structure and the energies of the 1:1 C2H2-CCl4 adducts were computed at the B3LYP, MP2 and M05-2X levels of theory using 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The computations indicated two minima for the 1:1 C2H2-CCl4 adducts; with the C-Cl center dot center dot center dot pi adduct being the global minimum, where pi cloud of C2H2 is the electron donor. The second minimum corresponded to a C-H...Cl adduct, in which C2H2 is the proton donor. The interaction energies for the adducts A and B were found to be nearly identical. Experimentally, both C-Cl center dot center dot center dot pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl adducts were generated in Ar and N2 matrixes and characterized using infrared spectroscopy. This is the first report on halogen bonded adduct, stabilized through C-Cl center dot center dot center dot pi interaction being identified at low temperatures using matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy. Atoms in Molecules (AIM) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analyses were performed to support the experimental results. The structures of 2:1 ((C2H2)(2)-CCl4) and 1:2 (C2H2-(CCl4)(2)) multimers and their identification in the low temperature matrixes were also discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

UVPES studies and ab initio and DFT computations have been done on the benzene...ICl complex; electron spectral data and computed orbital energies show that donor orbitals are stabilized and acceptor orbitals are destabilized due to complexation. Calculations predict an oblique structure for the complex in which the interacting site is a C=C bond center in the donor and iodine atom in the acceptor, in full agreement with earlier experimental reports. BSSE-corrected binding energies closely match the enthalpy of complexation reported, and the NBO analysis clearly reveals the involvement of the pi orbital of benzene and the sigma* orbital of ICl in the complex.

Energetics of the ground and excited state intramolecular proton transfer in salicylic acid have been studied by ab initio molecular orbital calculations using the 6-31G** basis set at the restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) and configuration interaction-single excitation (CIS) levels and also using the semiempirical method AM1 at the RHF level as well as with single and pair doubles excitation configuration interaction spanning eight frontier orbitals (PECI = 8). The ab initio potential energy profile for intramolecular proton transfer in the ground state reveals a single minimum corresponding to the primary form, in the first excited singlet state, however, there are two minima corresponding to the primary and tautomeric forms, separated by a barrier of similar to 6 kcal/mol, thus accounting for dual emission in salicylic acid. Electron density changes with electronic excitation and tautomerism indicate no zwitterion formation. Changes in spectral characteristics with change in pH, due to protonation and deprotonation of salicylic acid, are also accounted for, qualitatively. Although the AM1 calculations suggest a substantial barrier for proton transfer in the ground as well as the first excited state of SA, it predicts the transition wavelength in near quantitative accord with the experimental results for salicylic acid and its protonated and deprotonated forms.

The anomeric effect in S---C---S and O---C---S systems was studied by using closed-shell Hartree-Fock theory. A comparison of the STO-3G level with the 4–31G and 6–31G* levels was performed for the O---C---O system, and the STO-3G level found adequate for study of the anomeric effect. Optimization of bond lengths and angles was conducted at the STO-3G level and limited studies were made at the 4–31G level. The nature of the torsional potential curves is compared for the O---C---O, O---C---S, and S---C---S systems. The possible reasons for the decreased anomeric effect in sulfur systems are discussed.

The chemical groups which take part in the proton transfer reaction in bacteriorhodopsin have been studied by ab initio quantum chemical methods. The various factors such as conjugation with a linear system, electron delocalization of the guanidine type, cis-trans isomerism, geometry distortion and hydrogen bonding with charged groups can influence the properties of a given chemical group. Several systems are studied at 4-31G and STO-3G levels. Some of the Schiff-base analogues and guanidine type molecules are characterized by their molecular orbital diagrams, energy levels and the nature of charge distribution. Also, the effects of the above-mentioned factors on proton affinity are studied. It is hoped that the values thus obtained can be helpful in evaluating various structural models for proton transfer.

The BEBO (bond energy-bond order) model of Johnston and Parr is examined with the results of ab initio MO calculations on a series of metathetic reactions which involve hydrogen transfer. Energies are calculated at the 6-31G**/PMP2 = full//6-31G** level while the bond orders are estimated using the 6-31G** basis set with the geometry optimisation at the single configuration unrestricted Hartree-Fock frame. Our analysis reveals that the bond-order exponent in the BEBO theory is greater than unity for the reaction series and the entropy term becomes implicitly present in the BEBO model.

Systematic ab initio molecular orbital studies of the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra of dipropionamide using the basis sets 6-31g(d) and 6-31++G(d,p) have been carried out. The vibrational spectra of dipropionamide have been satisfactorily interpreted taking into account the agreement between the calculated frequencies, infrared and Raman band intensities and the shifts in the spectra of deuterated molecules with those observed. The previous assignments of most of the vibrational bands are well confirmed, a few bands need reassignment, however. The solvent effects were investigated by self-consistent reaction field theory using dipole and self-consistent isodensity polarized continuum model methods. The introduction of a dielectric medium has only a marginal effect on the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra. However, the calculated changes in geometry and vibrational spectra on going from the gas phase to the solution phase are in accord with the increasing weight of the dipolar resonance structure in polar solvents. We have performed density functional calculations on tetragonal SnO and PbO (litharge) in the space group P4/nmm with the specific intention of examining the role played by Sn 5s and Pb 6s lone pairs in stabilizing the structure, and in giving rise to semi-metallic behavior (of SnO at ambient pressure and of PbO in the gamma phase). Use of the electron localization function has permitted real-space visualization of the lone pair in these structures. We also discuss the electronic structure of the orthorhombic PbO (massicot, space group Pbma) which again has localized lone pairs, contrary to some earlier expectation. Thermal decomposition of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) has been studied in the temperature range of 10501175 K behind reflected shock waves in a single pulse shock tube. The unimolecular elimination of HCl is found to be the major channel through which 1,2-DCE decomposes under these conditions. The rate constant for the unimolecular elimination of HCl from 1,2-dichloroethane is found to be 10(13.98+/-0.80) exp(-57.8+/-2.0/RT) s(-1), where the activation energy is given in kcal mol(-1) and is very close to that value for CH3CH2Cl (EC). Ab initio (HF and MP2) and DFT calculations have been carried out to find the activation barrier and the structure of the transition state for this reaction channel from both EC and 1,2-DCE. The preexponential factors calculated at various levels of theory (BF/6-311++G**, MP2/6-311++G**, and B3LYP/6-311++G**) are (approximate to10(15) s(-1)) significantly larger than the experimental results. If the torsional mode in the ground state is treated as free internal rotation the preexponential factors reduce significantly, giving excellent agreement with experimental values. The DFT results are in excellent (fortuitous?) agreement with the experimental value for activation energy for 1,2-DCE while the MP2 and HF results seem to overestimate the barrier. However, DFT results for EC is 4.5 kcal mol(-1) less than the previously reported experimental values. At all levels, theory predicts an increase in HCI elimination barrier on beta-Cl substitution on EC.

Thermal decomposition of propargyl alcohol (C3H3OH), a molecule of interest in interstellar chemistry and combustion, was investigated using a single pulse shock tube in the temperature ranging from 953 to 1262 K. The products identified include acetylene, propyne, vinylacetylene, propynal, propenal, and benzene. The experimentally observed overall rate constant for thermal decomposition of propargyl alcohol was found to be k = 10((10.17 +/- 0.36)) exp(-39.70 +/- 1.83)/RT) s(-1) Ab initio theoretical calculations were carried out to understand the potential energy surfaces involved in the primary and secondary steps of propargyl alcohol thermal decomposition. Transition state theory was used to predict the rate constants, which were then used and refined in a kinetic simulation of the product profile. The first step in the decomposition is C-O bond dissociation, leading to the formation of two important radicals in combustion, OH and propargyl. This has been used to study the reverse OH propargyl radical reaction, about which there appears to be no prior work. Depending on the site of attack, this reaction leads to propargyl alcohol or propenal, one of the major products at temperatures below 1200 K. A detailed mechanism has been derived to explain all the observed products.

We report ab initio calculations for the band dispersions and total as well as partial densities of states for vacancy ordered, clustered spinels, GaMo4S8 and GaV4S8. Results are presented for the high temperature cubic phase for both compounds. Additionally, we discuss results of similar calculations for GaMo4S8 in an idealized cubic structure, as well as the nonmagnetic and the ferromagnetic states of the low temperature rhombohedral structure. Comparison of these results allows us to discuss the unusual aspects of the electronic structure of this interesting class of compounds, and provide estimates of the crystal-field and exchange splitting strengths.
