A study of the phase transitions in (NH4)2SO4 and (NH4)2SO4---K2SO4 mixed crystals by EPR of the CrO3- ion is reported. The results indicate a bilinear coupling of the order parameter with spontaneous polarization and a crossover from a discontinuous to a continuous nature of the phase transition in mixed crystals.

The Rotatary Bridgman method was used to grow ternary InSb(1-x)SBix, crystals. In this method the ampoule was subjected to reversible rotation at a rate of 60rpm. High quality crystals of 8mm diameter and 25mm length were grown with 6.5 atomic percentage of Bi. The grown crystals were characterized employing various techniques such as energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetery, infrared spectroscopy and Hall measurement.

We show that the results of Lüty and Ortiz-Lopez relating the cyanide reorientation rates to the high-temperature phase diagrams of alkali-halide-alkali-cyanide mixed crystals can be understood within simple mean-field theory.

Radially homogeneous bulk alloys of GaxIn1-xSb in the range 0.7 < x < 0.8, have been grown by vertical Bridgman technique. The factors affecting the interface shape during the growth were optimised to achieve zero convexity. From a series of experiments, a critical ratio of the temperature gradient (G) of the furnace at the melting point of the melt composition to the ampoule lowering speed (v) was deduced for attaining the planarity of the melt-solid interface. The studies carried out on directional solidification of Ga0.77In0.23Sb mixed crystals employing planar melt-solid interface exhibited superior quality than those with nonplanar interfaces. The solutions to certain problems encountered during the synthesis and growth of the compound were discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This work reports a detailed temperature dependent Raman study on the mixed crystals of K-0.9(NH4)(0.1)H2AsO4 (KADA) from 5K to 300K in the spectral range of 60-1200cm(-1), covering tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition accompanied by paraelectric to ferroelectric transition at T-c* similar to 60K. Multiple phase transitions below transition temperature (Tc* similar to 60K) are marked by the appearance of new modes, splitting of existing ones as well as anomalies in the self-energy parameters (i.e. mode frequencies and damping coefficient) of the phonon modes. Temperature independent behaviour of damping coefficient and abrupt jump in the mode frequency of some of the internal vibrations of AsO4 tetrahedra as well as external vibrations clearly signal long range ferroelectric ordering and proton ordering below T-c*. In addition, we observed that temperature dependence of many prominent phonon modes diverges significantly from their normal anharmonic behaviour below T-c* suggesting potential coupling between pseudospins and phonons. The electron spin resonance spectra of X-ray irradiated single crystals of strontium doped calcium tartrate tetrahydrate (CST) with molecular formula Ca0.88Sr0.12C4H4O6.4H(2)O grown in gels has been investigated. Only one species of free radical but with two magnetically unequivalent sites was observed at room temperature. The free radical was found to be the result of the splitting of a C-II bond adjacent to both the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. The a factor was found to be slightly anisotropic. Couplings with two H nuclei, believed to be the proton of the OH group attached directly to the unsaturated asymmetric carbon atom and the proton attached directly to the: other asymmetric carbon atom of the molecule were observed. The principal g-values were found to be 2.0030, 2.0017, 2.0027. The principal elements of the nuclear coupling are 7.45, 6.59, 4.28 and 8.56, 7.22, 18.71 G, respectively. The radical was found to be very stable. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Crystals growing from solution, the vapour phase and from supercooled melt exhibit, as a rule, planar faces. The geometry and distribution of dislocations present within the crystals thus grown are strongly related to the growth on planar faces and to the different growth sectors rather than the physical properties of the crystals and the growth methods employed. As a result, many features of generation and geometrical arrangement of defects are common to extremely different crystal species. In this paper these commoner aspects of dislocation generation and configuration which permits one to predict their nature and distribution are discussed. For the purpose of imaging the defects a very versatile and widely applicable technique viz. x-ray diffraction topography is used. Growth dislocations in solution grown crystals follow straight path with strongly defined directions. These preferred directions which in most cases lie within an angle of ±15° to the growth normal depend on the growth direction and on the Burger's vector involved. The potential configuration of dislocations in the growing crystals can be evaluated using the theory developed by Klapper which is based on linear anisotropic elastic theory. The preferred line direction of a particular dislocation corresponds to that in which the dislocation energy per unit growth length is a minimum. The line direction analysis based on this theory enables one to characterise dislocations propagating in a growing crystal. A combined theoretical analysis and experimental investigation based on the above theory is presented.

1H NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) studies have been carried out in the temperature range 100 K to 4 K, at two Larmor frequencies 11.4 and 23.3 MHz, in the mixed system of betaine phosphate and glycine phosphite (BPxGPI(1-x)), to study the effects of disorder on the proton group dynamics. Analysis of T1 data indicates the presence of a number of inequivalent methyl groups and a gradual transition from classical reorientations to quantum tunneling rotations. At lower temperatures, microstructural disorder in the local environments of the methyl groups, result in a distribution in the activation energy (Ea) and the torsional energy gap (E01). For certain values of x, the magnetisation recovery shows biexponential behaviour at lower temperatures.

3d and 4d core-level XPS spectra for CePd3, a mixed-valence system, have been measured. Each spectrum exhibits two sets of structures, each corresponding to one of the valence states of cerium. Thus the usefulness of XPS, which has so far not been used extensively to investigate the mixed-valence cerium systems, is pointed out.

A ternary metal-nucleotide complex, Na2[Cu(5’-IMP)2(im)o,8(H20)l,2(H20)2h]as~ 1be2e.n4 pHr2ep0a,r ed and its structure analyzed by X-ray diffraction (5’-IMP = inosine 5’-monophos hate; im = imidazole). The complex crystallizes in space group C222, with a = 8.733 (4) A, b = 23.213 (5) A, c = 21.489 (6) 1, and Z = 4. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by full-matrix least-squares technique on the basis of 2008 observed reflections to a final R value of 0.087. Symmetry-related 5’-IMP anions coordinate in cis geometry through the N(7) atoms of the bases. The other cis positions of the coordination plane are statistically occupied by nitrogen atoms of disordered im groups and water oxygens with occupancies 0.4 and 0.6, respectively. Water oxygens in axial positions complete the octahedral coordination of Cu(I1). The complex is isostructural with C~S-[P~(S’-IMP),(NH~)~a] m”,o del proposed for Pt(I1) binding to DNA. The base binding observed in the present case is different from the typical ”phosphate only” binding shown from earlier studies on metal-nucleotide complexes containing various other ?r-aromatic amines.

The hexahydrate of a 1:1 complex between L-histidyl-L-serine and glycyl-L-glutamic acid crystallizes in space group P1 with a = 4.706(1), b= 8.578(2), c= 16.521(3) ÅA; α= 85.9(1), β= 89.7(1)°, = 77.4(1). The crystal structure, solved by direct methods, has been refined to an R value of 0.046 for 2150 observed reflections. The two peptide molecules in the structure have somewhat extended conformations. The unlike molecules aggregate into separate alternating layers. Each layer is stabilized by hydrogen bonded head-to-tail sequences as well as sequences of hydrogen bonds involving peptide groups. The arrangement of molecules in each layer is similar to one of the plausible idealized arrangements of L-alanyl-L-alanine worked out from simple geometrical considerations. Adjacent layers in the structure are held together by interactions involving side chains as well as water molecules. The water structure observed in the complex provides a good model, at atomic resolution, for that in protein crystals. An interesting feature of the crystal structure is the existence of two water channels in the interfaces between adjacent peptide layers.

Static magnetization for single crystals of insulating Nd0.85Pb0.15MnO3 and marginally conducting Nd0.70Pb0.30MnO3 has been studied around the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature T-C. Results of measurements carried out in the critical range vertical bar(T - T-C)/T-C vertical bar <= 0.1 are reported. Critical exponents beta and gamma for the thermal behaviour of magnetization and susceptibility have been obtained both by modified Arrott plots and the Kouvel-Fisher method. The exponent delta independently obtained from the critical isotherm was found to satisfy the Widom scaling relation delta = gamma/beta + 1. For both compositions the values of exponents are consistent with those expected for isotropic magnets belonging to the Heisenberg universality class with short-range exchange in three dimensions. Correspondingly, the specific heat displays only a cusp-like anomaly at the critical temperature of these crystals which is consistent with an exponent alpha < 0. The results show that the ferromagnetic ordering transition in Nd1-xPbxMnO3 in the composition range 0.15 <= x <= 0.40 is continuous. This mixed-valent manganite displays the conventional properties of a Heisenberg-like ferromagnet, irrespective of the differing transport properties and in spite of low ordering temperatures T-C = 109 and 147.2 K for x = 0.15 and 0.30, respectively.

Single crystals of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KAP) have been grown by slow evaporation method from aqueous solutions. Thermal analyses indicate that KAP crystals decompose into phthalic anhydride and KOH around 520 K. Electrical properties of single crystals of KAP have been studied along with the effect of X-ray irradiation of the crystals. The electrical transport appears to be associated with tunneling of protons. The irradiated crystal exhibits lower dielectric constant and higher ac conductivity.
