TiO2 (anatase) was synthesized using a microwave-irradiation-assisted chemical method. The reaction conditions were varied to obtain unique nanostructures of TiO2 comprising nanometric spheres giving the materials a very porous morphology. The oxide was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The specific surface area and porosity were quantified by the BET method, and the degradation of dyes was carried out using these materials. The photocatalytic activity of the nanometric TiO2 was significantly higher than that of commercially available TiO2 (Degussa P25) for the degradation of the dyes.

Novel, volatile, stable, oxo-β-ketoesterate complexes of titanium, whose synthesis requires only an inert atmosphere, as opposed to a glove box, have been developed. Using one of the complexes as the precursor, thin films of TiO2 have been deposited on glass substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at temperatures ranging from 400°C to 525°C and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. All the films grown in this temperature range are very smooth; those grown above 480°C consist of nearly monodisperse, nanocrystals of the anatase phase. Optical studies show the bandgaps in the range 3.4–3.7 eV for films grown at different temperatures. Thin films of anatase TiO2 have also been grown by spin-coating technique using another ketoesterate complex of titanium, demonstrating that the newly developed complexes can be successfully used for thin film growth by various chemical routes.

Nanoparticles are highly used in biological applications including nanomedicine. In this present study, the interaction of HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HCC) with hydroxyapatite (HAp), zinc-doped hydroxyapatite, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were investigated. Hydroxyapatite, zinc-doped hydroxyapatite and titanium dioxide nanoparticles were prepared by wet precipitation method. They were subjected to isochronal annealing at different temperatures. Particle morphology and size distribution were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope. The nanoparticles were co-cultured with HepG2 cells. MTT assay was employed to evaluate the proliferation of tumor cells. The DNA damaging effect of HAp, Zn-doped HAp, and TiO2 nanoparticles in human hepatoma cells (HepG2) were evaluated using DNA fragmentation studies. The results showed that in HepG2 cells, the anti-tumor activity strongly depend on the size of nanoparticles in HCC cells. Cell cycle arrest analysis for HAp, zinc-doped HAp, and TiO2 nanoparticles revealed the influence of HAp, zinc-doped HAp, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the apoptosis of HepG2 cells. The results imply that the novel nano nature effect plays an important role in the biomedicinal application of nanoparticles.

Polyaniline/titaniurn dioxide nanocomposites were prepared using alpha-dextrose as surfactant and ammonium persulphate as an oxidant. The PANI/TiO2 nanocomposite is characterized by FTIR, XRD and TEM. The FTIR spectra revel that the presence of characteristic peaks of benzenoid, qunoide rings and metal-oxygen stretching. The XRD studies show the monoclinic structure of the nanocomposites. The TEM study shows that the size of TiO2 is in the order of 9 nm where as the composite size is of the order of 13 nm and further it was observed that the TiO2 particles are intercalated to form a core shell of PANI. The maximum sensing response for LPG is found to be 90% for 30 wt.% of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites at 400 ppm whereas for Benzene and Toluene it is negligibly small (<= 20%) and for the cyclohexane sensing response it is around 30% for different wt.%.

The industrial production and commercial applications of titanium dioxide nanoparticles have increased considerably in recent times, which has increased the probability of environmental contamination with these agents and their adverse effects on living systems. This study was designed to assess the genotoxicity potential of TiO2 NPs at high exposure concentrations, its bio-uptake, and the oxidative stress it generated, a recognised cause of genotoxicity. Allium cepa root tips were treated with TiO2 NP dispersions at four different concentrations (12.5, 25, 50, 100 mu g/mL). A dose dependant decrease in the mitotic index (69 to 21) and an increase in the number of distinctive chromosomal aberrations were observed. Optical, fluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed chromosomal aberrations, including chromosomal breaks and sticky, multipolar, and laggard chromosomes, and micronucleus formation. The chromosomal aberrations and DNA damage were also validated by the comet assay. The bio-uptake of TiO2 in particulate form was the key cause of reactive oxygen species generation, which in turn was probably the cause of the DNA aberrations and genotoxicity observed in this study.

An improved photocatalyst consisting of a nanocomposite of exfoliated graphite and titanium dioxide (EG-TiO2) was prepared. SEM and TEM micrographs showed that the spherical TiO2 nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of the EG sheets. A four times photocatalytic enhancement was observed for this floating nanocomposite compared to TiO2 and EG alone for the degradation of eosin yellow. For all the materials, the reactions followed first order kinetics where for EG-TiO2, the rate constant was much higher than for EG and TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of EG-TiO2 was ascribed to the capability of graphitic layers to accept and transport electrons from the excited TiO2, promoting charge separation. This indicates that carbon, a cheap and abundant material, can be a good candidate as an electron attracting reservoir for photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. High-kappa TiO2 thin films have been fabricated using cost effective sol-gel and spin-coating technique on p-Si (100) wafer. Plasma activation process was used for better adhesion between TiO2 films and Si. The influence of annealing temperature on the structure-electrical properties of titania films were investigated in detail. Both XRD and Raman studies indicate that the anatase phase crystallizes at 400 degrees C, retaining its structural integrity up to 1000 degrees C. The thickness of the deposited films did not vary significantly with the annealing temperature, although the refractive index and the RMS roughness enhanced considerably, accompanied by a decrease in porosity. For electrical measurements, the films were integrated in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure. The electrical measurements evoke a temperature dependent dielectric constant with low leakage current density. The Capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of the films annealed at 400 degrees C exhibited a high value of dielectric constant (similar to 34). Further, frequency dependent C-V measurements showed a huge dispersion in accumulation capacitance due to the presence of TiO2/Si interface states and dielectric polarization, was found to follow power law dependence on frequency (with exponent `s'=0.85). A low leakage current density of 3.6 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) at 1 V was observed for the films annealed at 600 degrees C. The results of structure-electrical properties suggest that the deposition of titania by wet chemical method is more attractive and cost-effective for production of high-kappa materials compared to other advanced deposition techniques such as sputtering, MBE, MOCVD and AID. The results also suggest that the high value of dielectric constant kappa obtained at low processing temperature expands its scope as a potential dielectric layer in MOS device technology. We discuss here a semiconductors assembly comprising of titanium dioxide (TiO2) rods sensitized by cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals for potential applications in large area electronics on three dimensional (3-D) substrates. Vertically aligned TiO2 rods are grown on a substrate using a 150 degrees C process flow and then sensitized with CdS by SILAR method at room temperature. This structure forms an effective photoconductor as the photo-generated electrons are rapidly removed from the CdS via the TiO2 thereby permitting a hole rich CdS. Current-voltage characteristics are measured and models illustrate space charge limited photo-current as the mechanism of charge transport at moderate voltage bias. The stable assembly and high speed are achieved. The frequency response with a loading of 10 pF and 9 M Omega shows a half power frequency of 100 Hz. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. Titanium oxide (Titania) thin films were synthesized on different substrates via the sol-gel dip-coating method using alkoxide solution. Some selected samples were also prepared with different percentage of Lead (Pb). The influence of Pb addition in precursor sol on the optical properties of titanium dioxide thin films was studied. The optical transmittance in the visible region has increased with increase in weight percentage of lead. The refractive index was slightly decreased with Pb addition. Crystallization of these coatings was achieved through thermal annealing at temperatures above 400 degrees C. The structural properties and surface morphology of the crystallized coatings were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Increase in average grain size from 250 nm to 350 nm with increase in Pb concentration is observed. Films were appeared to more coarse with increase in Pb addition. An increase in Pb addition resulted increase in average roughness from 12 nm to 25 nm.

An unprecedented morphology of a titanium dioxide (TiO2) and cadmium sulfide (CdS) self-assembly obtained using a `truly' one-pot and highly cost effective method with a multi-gram scale yield is reported here. The TiO2-CdS assembly, comprising of TiO2 and CdS nanoparticles residing next to each other homogeneously self-assembling into `woollen knitting ball' like microspheres, exhibited remarkable potential as a visible light photocatalyst with high recyclability.

The photocatalytic activity of commercial titanium dioxide under UV and visible radiation was improved by composites of tungsten trioxide (WO3) with TiO2. WO3 was prepared by solution combustion synthesis and the mixed oxides/composites of WO3-TiO2 were prepared in different weight ratios (0, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) by physical mixing. These catalysts were characterized by XRD, DRS, BET, SEM, TEM, pH drift method, TGA and photoluminescence. The photocatalytic activity varies with the WO3 loading in the composites. The optimum loading of WO3 in the composites was found to be 15 wt% for both UV and visible radiation. This loading showed faster dye degradation rate than commercial TiO2 (TiO2-C) and WO3 (WO3-C). The effect of initial concentrations of methylene blue (MB) and orange G (OG) and the effect of the functional group on dye degradation was studied with both anionic and cationic dyes with 15 wt% WO3-TiO2. Thin films of NiTi were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering from an equiatomic alloy target (Ni/Ti: 50/50 at.%). The films were deposited without intentional heating of the substrates. The thickness of the deposited films was approximately 2 mu m. The structure and morphology of NiTi films annealed at different temperatures were analyzed in order to understand the effect of annealing on physical properties of the films. The compositional investigations of fresh and annealed films were also evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed that as-deposited films were amorphous in nature whereas annealed films were found to poly-crystalline with the presence of Austenite phase as the dominant phase. AFM investigations showed higher grain size and surface roughness values in the annealed films. In annealed films, the grain size and film roughness values were increased from 10 to 85 nm and 2-18 nm. Film composition measured by EDS were found to 52.5 atomic percent of Ni and 47.5 atomic percent of Ti. XPS investigations, demonstrated the presence of Ni content on the surface of the films, in fresh films, whereas annealed films did not show any nickel. From HR-XPS investigations, it can be concluded that annealed NiTi films have higher tendency to form metal oxide (titanium dioxide) layer on the surface of the films than fresh NiTi films. The photoinduced electron transfer processes in a nanoheterostructured semiconductor assembly are complex and depend on various parameters Of the constituents of the assembly. We present here the ultrafast electron transfer characteristics of an assembly comprised of a Wide band semiconductor, titanium dioxide (TiO2), attached to light-harvesting cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanotrystals of varying crystallographic phase content. Quantitative analysis of Synchrotron high-resolution X-ray. diffraction data of CdS nanocrystals precisely reveals the presence of both wurtzite and zinc blende phases in varying amounts. The,estimated content of crystal phases is observed to be strongly dependent on an important synthesis parameter, viz., the ratio of the two solvents. The biphasit nature of CdS influences directly the shape of the nanocrystal at long reaction times as well as the transfer of the photoexcited electrons from the CdS to TiO2 as obtained from transient absorption spectroscopy. A higher amount of zinc blende Phase is observed to be beneficial for fast electron transfer across the CdS-TiO2 interface. The electron transfer rate constant differs by one order of magnitude between the CdS nanocryStals and varies linearly with the fraction of the phases.
