A nano-scale instability in the beta phase resulting in the formation of the disordered orthorhombic O' phase has been discovered in a fairly dilute binary Ti-Mo alloy, using selected area electron diffraction and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The O' phase informed in the alloy when the Mo content exceeds a critical value. The instability occurs in beta-solutionized samples that have been quenched to room temperature and is found to co-exist with athermal omega to phase. Interestingly, this nano-scale instability, involving the {110}<1<(1)over bar>0> soft-phonon shuffle, occurs in the beta phase without deliberate additions of either interstitial or substitutional solutes. The effects of Mo, Ti, and Zr on the diffusion and growth of the Nb(X)Si-2 and Nb(X)(5)Si-3 phases in an Nb(X)-Si system are analyzed. The integrated diffusion coefficients are determined from diffusion couple experiments and compared with the data previously calculated in a binary Nb-Si system. The growth rates of both phases are affected by the addition of Mo and Zr, whereas the addition of Ti has no effect. The atomic mechanism of diffusion is also discussed based on the crystal structure and the possible changes in the defect concentrations due to alloying. Finally, the growth mechanism of the phases is discussed on the basis of a physico-chemical approach. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A microstructural and X-ray investigation of Ti-AI-Mo alloys Ti-31 Al-15 Mo, Ti-31 Al-13 Mo, Ti-31Al-9Mo and Ti-35Al-9Mo (containing the Ti3Al, TiAl and β phases) indicates that the existing phase diagram of the ternary system for this composition range published by Ge Dhzhi-Min and Pylaeva is in error above 1473 K. An analysis of phase relations reveals that the error has arisen from their use of the Ti-AI diagram due to Bumps, Kessler and Hansen as a basis for generating the ternary. It is shown that a phase diagram of the ternary, consistent with the experimental results, can be generated using a version of the Ti-AI system due to Margolin. Simple geometric arguments are used to build up a new semi-quantitative description of the Ti-AI-Mo system which can be used as a basis for a detailed investigation of phase equilibria in this system.

Some initial results are presented on the formation of the y phase, based on the intermetallic TiA1 (LIo, c/a = 1.02) from the phase, based on the intermetallic TidAl (DOts , c/a = 0.801) in a Ti-31wt. Al-13wt Mo alloy. The study is part of a programme to evaluate microstractures and properties of alloys containing the y phase in the Ti-Mo-AI ternary system.

The effect of thermal cycling on the load-controlled tension-tension fatigue behavior of a Ni-Ti-Fe shape memory alloy (SMA) at room temperature was studied. Considerable strain accumulation was observed to occur in this alloy under both quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions. Though, in all cases, steady-state is reached within the first 50-100 cycles, the accumulated steady-state strain, epsilon(p.ss), is much smaller in thermally cycled alloy. As a result, the fatigue performance of them was found to be significantly enhanced vis-a-vis the as-solutionized alloy. Furthermore, under load-controlled conditions, the fatigue life of Ni-Ti-Fe alloys was found to be exclusively dependent on epsilon(p.ss). Observations made by profilometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicate that the 200-500% enhancement in fatigue life of thermally cycled alloy is due to the homogeneous distribution of the accumulated fatigue strain. The applicability of the confusion principle and size factor in glass formation has been explored by following different combinations of isoelectronic Ti, Zr and Hf metals. Four alloys of nominal composition Zr41.5Ti41.5Ni17, Zr41.5Hf41.5Ni17, Zr25Ti25Cu50 and Zr34Ti16Cu50 have been rapidly solidified to obtain an amorphous phase and their crystallisation behaviour has been studied. The Ti-Zr-Ni alloy crystallises in three steps. Initially this alloy precipitates icosahedral quasicrystalline phase, which on further heat treatment precipitates cF96 Zr2Ni phase. The Zr-Hf-Ni alloy can not be amorphised under the same experimental conditions. The amorphous Zr-Ti-Cu alloys at the initial stages of crystallisation phase-separateinto two amorphous phases and then on further heat treatment cF24 Cu5Zr and oC68 Cu10Zr7 phase are precipitated. The lower glass-forming abilityof Zr-Hf-Ni alloy and the crystallisation behaviour of the above alloys has been studied. The rationale behind nanoquasicrystallisation and the formation of other intermetallic phases has been explained.

The activity of Cr in solid Cr-Mo alloys has been measured at 1873 K using a metal-oxide-gas equilibrium technique. Thin foils of Mo were equilibrated with solid Cr203 under flowing gas mixtures of argon, hydrogen and watervapourof known composition. The equilibrium concentration of Cr in Mo was determined by chemical analysis. These measurements indicate positive deviations from Raoult's law. The activity data obtained in the study at 1873 K are combined with free energy of mixing at 1471 K, calorimetric enthalpy of mixing at 1673 K, and experimental evidence of phase separation at lower temperatures, reported in the literature, to obtain an optimised set of thermodynamic parameters for the Cr-Mosystem in the solid state.

The present paper reports a new class of Co based superalloys that has gamma-gamma' microstructure and exhibits much lower density compared to other commercially available Co superalloys including Co-Al-W based alloys. The basic composition is Co-10Al-5Mo (at%) with addition of 2 at% Ta for stabilization of gamma' phase. The gamma-gamma' microstructure evolves through solutionising and aging treatment. Using first principles calculations, we observe that Ta plays a crucial role in stabilizing gamma' phase. By addition of Ta in the basic stoichiometric composition Co-3(Al, Mo), the enthalpy of formation (Delta H-f) of L1(2) structure (gamma' phase) becomes more negative in comparison to DO19 structure. The All of the L12 structure becomes further more negative by the occupancy of Ni and Ti atoms in the lattice suggesting an increase in the stability of the gamma' precipitates. Among large number of alloys studied experimentally, the paper presents results of detailed investigations on Co-10Al-5Mo-2Ta, Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Ta and Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Ta-2Ti. To evaluate the role alloying elements, atom probe tomography investigations were carried out to obtain partition coefficients for the constituent elements. The results show strong partitioning of Ni, Al, Ta and Ti in ordered gamma' precipitates. 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Four Cu bearing alloys of nominal composition Zr25Ti25Cu50, Zr34Ti16Cu50, Zr25Hf25Cu50 and Ti25Hf25Cu50 have been rapidly solidified in order to produce ribbons. All the alloys become amorphous after meltspinning. In the Zr34Ti16Cu50 alloy localized precipitation of cF24 Cu5Zr phase can be observed in the amorphous matrix. The alloys show a tendency of phase separation at the initial stages of crystallization. The difference in crystallization behavior of these alloys with Ni bearing ternary alloys can be explained by atomic size, binary heat of mixing and Mendeleev number. It has been observed that both Laves and Anti-Laves phase forming compositions are suitable for glass formation. The structures of the phases, precipitated during rapid solidification and crystallization can be viewed in terms of Bernal deltahedra and Frank-Kasper polyhedra.

Small additions of B to Titanium alloys refine the as-cast microstructure significantly and hence improve their mechanical performance. In this work, tensile, fracture and fatigue properties of the as-cast and HIPed Ti-6Al-4V alloy with hypoeutectic wt.% of B additions have been examined, with particular emphasis on identifying the microstructural length scale that controls the mechanical properties of these alloys.

An anomalous variation in the experimental elastic modulus, E, of Ti-6Al-4V-xB (with x up to 0.55 wt.%) is reported. Volume fractions and moduli of the constituent phases were measured using microscopy and nanoindentation, respectively. These were used in simple micromechanical models to examine if the E values could be rationalized. Experimental E values higher than the upper bound estimates suggest complex interplay between microstructural modifications, induced by the addition of B, and properties.

From the quaternary Ti-Zr-Hf-Ni phase diagram. the cross-section at 20 at % Ni was selected for investigation. The icosahedral quasicrystalline, crystalline and amorphous phases were observed to form in nine kinds of rapidly solidified (TixZryHfz)(80)Ni-20 (x + y + z = 1) alloys at different compositions. The quasilattice constants of 0.519 and 0.531 nm were obtained for the icosahedral phase formed in the melt-spun Ti40Zr20Hf20Ni20 and Ti20Zr40Hf20Ni20 alloys. respectively. The icosahedral phase formed in the melt-spun Ti40Zr20Hf20Ni20 alloy especially is thermodynamically stable. The supercooled liquid region of the Ti20Zr20Hf40Ni20 glassy alloy reached 64 K. From these results a comparison of quasicrystal-forming and glass-forming abilities, was carried out. The quasicrystal-forming ability was reduced and glass-forming ability was improved with an increase in Hf and Zr contents in the (TixZryHfz)(80)Ni-20 alloys. On the other hand. an increase in Ti content caused an improvement in quasicrystal-forming ability.

The alloy, Ti-6Al-4V is an alpha + beta Ti alloy that has large prior beta grain size (similar to 2 mm) in the as cast state. Minor addition of B (about 0.1 wt.%) to it refines the grain size significantly as well as produces in-situ TiB needles. The role played by these microstructural modifications on high temperature deformation processing maps of B-modified Ti64 alloys is examined in this paper.Power dissipation efficiency and instability maps have been generated within the temperature range of 750-1000 degrees C and strain rate range of 10(-3)-10(+1) s(-1). Various deformation mechanisms, which operate in different temperature-strain rate regimes, were identified with the aid of the maps and complementary microstructural analysis of the deformed specimens. Results indicate four distinct deformation domains within the range of experimental conditions examined, with the combination of 900-1000 degrees C and 10(-3)-10(-2) s(-1) being the optimum for hot working. In that zone, dynamic globularization of alpha laths is the principle deformation mechanism. The marked reduction in the prior beta grain size, achieved with the addition of B, does not appear to alter this domain markedly. The other domains, with negative values of instability parameter, show undesirable microstructural features such as extensive kinking/bending of alpha laths and breaking of beta laths for Ti64-0.0B as well as generation of voids and cracks in the matrix and TiB needles in the B-modified alloys. A minor addition of B to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, by similar to 0.1 wt pct, reduces its as-cast prior beta grain size by an order of magnitude, whereas higher B content leads to the presence of in situ formed TiB needles in significant amounts. An experimental investigation into the role played by these microstructural modifications on the high-temperature deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V-xB alloys, with x varying between 0 wt pct and 0.55 wt pct, was conducted. Uniaxial compression tests were performed in the temperature range of 1023 K to 1273 K (750 degrees C to 1000 degrees C) and in the strain rate range of 10(-3) to 10(+1) s(-1). True stress-true strain responses of all alloys exhibit flow softening at lower strain rates and oscillations at higher strain rates. The flow softening is aided by the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization through lath globularization in high temperature (1173 K to 1273 K 900 degrees C to 1000 degrees C]) and a lower strain rate (10(-2) to 10(-3) s(-1)) regime. The grain size refinement with the B addition to Ti64, despite being marked, had no significant effect on this. Oscillations in the flow curve at a higher strain rate (10(0) to 10(+1) s(-1)), however, are associated with microstructural instabilities such as bending of laths, breaking of lath boundaries, generation of cavities, and breakage of TiB needles. The presence of TiB needles affected the instability regime. Microstructural evidence suggests that the matrix cavitation is aided by the easy fracture of TiB needles.
