The rapidly growing structure databases enhance the probability of finding identical sequences sharing structural similarity. Structure prediction methods are being used extensively to abridge the gap between known protein sequences and the solved structures which is essential to understand its specific biochemical and cellular functions. In this work, we plan to study the ambiguity between sequence-structure relationships and examine if sequentially identical peptide fragments adopt similar three-dimensional structures. Fragments of varying lengths (five to ten residues) were used to observe the behavior of sequence and its three-dimensional structures. The STAMP program was used to superpose the three-dimensional structures and the two parameters (Sequence Structure Similarity Score (Sc) and Root Mean Square Deviation value) were employed to classify them into three categories: similar, intermediate and dissimilar structures. Furthermore, the same approach was carried out on all the three-dimensional protein structures solved in the two organisms, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Plasmodium falciparum to validate our results.

Experiments were conducted to measure the heat flux in the vicinity of a three-dimensional protuberance placed on a flat plate facing a hypersonic flow at zero angle of attack. The effects of flow enthalpy and height of the protuberance on the interference heating in its vicinity were studied. Evidence of disturbed flow with highly three-dimensional characteristics and heightened vorticity was observed near the protrusion. A parametric study by changing the deflection angle of the protuberance was also made. Correlations exist in the open literature for enthalpy values lower than 2  MJ/kg. This effort has yielded a new correlation that is valid for enthalpies up to 6  MJ/kg. The Z-type schlieren technique was used to visualize the flow features qualitatively for one of the flow conditions studied.

Scaffolds for bone tissue engineering are essentially characterized by porous three-dimensional structures with interconnected pores to facilitate the exchange of nutrients and removal of waste products from cells, thereby promoting cell proliferation in such engineered scaffolds. Although hydroxyapatite is widely being considered for bone tissue engineering applications due to its occurrence in the natural extracellular matrix of this tissue, limited reports are available on additive manufacturing of hydroxyapatite-based materials. In this perspective, hydroxyapatite-based three-dimensional porous scaffolds with two different binders (maltodextrin and sodium alginate) were fabricated using the extrusion method of three-dimensional plotting and the results were compared in reference to the structural properties of scaffolds processed via chemical stabilization and sintering routes, respectively. With the optimal processing conditions regarding to pH and viscosity of binder-loaded hydroxyapatite pastes, scaffolds with parallelepiped porous architecture having up to 74% porosity were fabricated. Interestingly, sintering of the as-plotted hydroxyapatite-sodium alginate (cross-linked with CaCl2 solution) scaffolds led to the formation of chlorapatite (Ca9.54P5.98O23.8Cl1.60(OH)(2.74)). Both the sintered scaffolds displayed progressive deformation and delayed fracture under compressive loading, with hydroxyapatite-alginate scaffolds exhibiting a higher compressive strength (9.5 +/- 0.5MPa) than hydroxyapatite-maltodextrin scaffolds (7.0 +/- 0.6MPa). The difference in properties is explained in terms of the phase assemblage and microstructure.

The unsteady magnetohydrodynamic viscous flow and heat transfer of Newtonian fluids induced by an impulsively stretched plane surface in two lateral directions are studied by using an analytic technique, namely, the homotopy method. The analytic series solution presented here is highly accurate and uniformly valid for all time in the entire region. The effects of the stretching ratio and the magnetic field on the surface shear stresses and heat transfer are studied. The surface shear stresses in x- and y-directions and the surface heat transfer are enchanced by increasing stretching ratio for a fixed value of the magnetic parameter. For a fixed stretching ratio, the surface shear stresses increase with the magnetic parameter, but the heat transfer decreases. The Nusselt number takes longer time to reach the steady state than the skin friction coefficients. There is a smooth transition from the initial unsteady state to the steady state.

The hydrothermal reaction of Ln(NO3)(3), Ni(NO3)(2), NaN3, and isonicotinic acid (L) yielded two novel 3-D coordination frameworks (1 and 2) of general formula [Ni(2)Ln(L)(5)(N-3)(2)(H2O)(3)] center dot 2H(2)O (Ln = Pr(III) for 1 and Nd(III) for 2), containing Ni-Pr or Ni-Nd hybrid extended three-dimensional networks containing both azido and carboxylate as co-ligands. Both the compounds are found to be isostructural and crystallize in monoclinic system having P2(1)/n space group. Here the lanthanide ions are found to be nonacoordinated. Both bidentate and monodentate modes of binding of the carboxylate with the lanthanides have been observed in the above complexes. Variable temperature magnetic studies of the above two complexes have been investigated in the temperature range 2-300 K which showed dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in both the cases and these experimental results are analyzed with the theoretical models. Reaction of lead nitrate and 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid under hydrothermal conditions carried out at different temperatures and pH yields a hybrid Compound Pb-2(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate)2, 1, and a three-dimensional coordination polymer Pb(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate), It. The two-dimensional double-layered compound, 1, with two-dimensional inorganic connectivities and one-dimensional organic connectivity is novel since hybrid compounds formed by 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid are uncommon. The lead atoms in I have holodirectional geometry, while those in II show hemidirectionality. In both I and II, 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid acts as a multi-dentate ligand with both the carboxylic groups and the amine group taking part in coordination. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. A method for separation of stresses in two and three-dimensional photo elasticity using the harmonisation ofjrst stress invariant along a straight section is deve- ,dped. For two-dimensions, the equations of equilibrium are reformulated in terms ojsum and difference of normal stresses and relations are obtained which can be used for harmonisation of the first invariant of stress along a straight section. A similar procedure is adopted for three-dimensions by making use of the Beltrmi-MicheN equations. The new relations are used in finite d~yerencefo rm to evaluate the sum of normal stresses along straight sections in a three-dimensional body. The method requires photoelastic data along the section as well ~rra djacent sections. This method could be used as an alternative to the shear d@erence method for separation of stresses in photoelasticity. 7he accuracy and reliability of the method is ver$ed by applying the method to problems whose solutions are known.

A novel manganese phosphite-oxalate, [C2N2H10][Mn-2(II)(OH2)(2)(HPO3)(2)(C2O4)] has been hydothermally synthesized and its structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure consists of neutral manganese phosphite layers, [Mn(HPO3)](infinity), formed by MnO6 octahedra and HPO3 units, cross-linked by the oxalate moieties. The organic cations occupy the middle of the 8-membered one dimensional channels. Magnetic studies indicate weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn2+ ions. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Hydrothermal reactions between uranium salts and arsenic pentoxide in the presence of two different amines yielded six new uranium arsenate phases exhibiting open-framework structures, ethylenediamine (en): [C2N2H9]-[(UO2)(ASO(4))] I; [C2N2H10][(UO2)F(HASO(4))]2 center dot 4H(2)O, II; [C2N2H9][U2F5(HASO(4))(2)], III; [C2N2H9][UF2(ASO(4))], IV; diethylenetriamine (DETA), [C4N3H16][U2F3(ASO(4))(2)(HAsO4)] V; and [C4N3H16][U2F6(AsO4)(HAsO4)], VI. The structures were determined using single crystal studies, which revealed two- (I, II, V) and three-dimensional (III, IV, VI) structures for the uranium arsenates. The uranium atom, in these compounds, exhibits considerable variations in the coordination (6 to 9) that appears to have some correlation with the synthetic conditions. The water molecules in [C2N2H10][(UO2)F(HAsO4)](2 center dot)4H(2)O, II, could be reversibly removed, and the dehydrated phase, [C2N2H10][(UO2)F(HAsO4)](2), IIa, was also characterized using single crystal studies. The observation of many mineralogical structures in the present compounds suggests that the hydrothermal method could successfully replicate the geothermal conditions. As part of this study, we have observed autunite, Ca[(UO2)(PO4)](2)(H2O)(11), metavauxite, [Fe(H2O)(6)][Al(OH)(H2O)(PO4)](2), finarite, PbCU(SO4)(OH)(2), and tancoite, LiNa2H[Al(PO4)(2)(OH)], structures. The repeated observation of the secondary building unit, SBU-4, in many of the uranium arsenate structures suggests that these are viable building units. Optical studies on the uranium arsenate compound, [C4N3H16][U2F6(AsO4)(HASO(4))), VI, containing uranium in the +4 oxidation state indicates a blue emission through an upconversion process. The compound also exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior.

A general three-dimensional solution is presented for statics and dynamics of plates, homogeneous or laminated, of orthotropic materials. The solution is in series form. Using parts of the general solution a variety of problems, especially of rectangular configurations, can be solved. As Mindlin's approximate analysis for vibration of thick plates is often adequate for specific practical purposes, a general solution for Mindlin's analysis is also given.

A numerical solution of the unsteady boundary layer equations under similarity assumptions is obtained. The solution represents the three-dimensional unsteady fluid motion caused by the time-dependent stretching of a flat boundary. It has been shown that a self-similar solution exists when either the rate of stretching is decreasing with time or it is constant. Three different numerical techniques are applied and a comparison is made among them as well as with earlier results. Analysis is made for various situations like deceleration in stretching of the boundary, mass transfer at the surface, saddle and nodal point flows, and the effect of a magnetic field. Both the constant temperature and constant heat flux conditions at the wall have been studied.

A hydrothermal reaction of the acetate salts of the rare-earths, 5-aminoisophthalic acid (H(2)AIP), and NaOH at 150 degrees C for 3 days gave rise to a new family of three-dimensional rare-earth aminoisophthalates, M(mu(2)-OH)(C8H5NO4)] M = Y3+ (I), La3+ (II), Pr3+ (III), Nd3+ (IV), Sm3+ (V), Eu3+ (VI), Gd3+ (VII), Dy3+ (VIII), and Er3+ (IX)]. The structures contain M-O(H)-M chains connected by AIP anions. The AIP ions are connected to five metal centers and each metal center is connected with five AIP anions giving rise to a unique (5,5) net. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of a (5,5) net in metal-organic frameworks that involve rare-earth elements. The doping of Eu3+/(3+) ions in place of Y3+/ La3+ in the parent structures gave rise to characteristic metal-centered emission (red = Eu3+, green = Tb3+). Life-time studies indicated that the excited emission states in the case of Eu3+ (4 mol-% doped) are in the range 0.287-0.490 ms and for Tb3+ (4 mol-% doped) are in the range of 1.265-1.702 ms. The Nd3+-containing compound exhibits up-conversion behavior based on two-photon absorption when excited using lambda = 580 nm.
