The phenomenon of drop formation at conical tips under near zero flow conditions has been investigated using a theoretical approach. The analysis permits the prediction of drop profile and drop volume, until the onset of instability. A semiempirical approach based on the similarity of drop shapes has been adopted to predict the detaching drop volumes at conical tips. The effects of base diameter of the cone, cone angle, interfacial tension, and the densities of the drop and the surrounding fluid on the maximum and detached drop volumes are predicted.

Excised shoot tips of Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. (dodder), a rootless and leafless angiospermic plant parasite, were cultured in vitro for the study of the control of lateral bud development by the apex. In a chemically defined medium lacking hormones, the basal bud alone developed into a shoot. The addition of coconut milk to the growth medium induced the activation of multiple lateral buds, but only a single bud developed further into a shoot. The decapitation of this shoot induced the development of another shoot and the process could be repeated. This showed the controlling effect of the apex in correlative control of bud development. Application of indole-3-acetic acid to the shoot tip explant delayed the development of the lateral bud. Gibberellic acid A3 induced a marked elongation growth of the explant and reinforced apical dominance. The direct application of cytokinin to an inhibited bud relieved it from apical dominance. A basipetally decreasing concentration gradient of auxin may prevail at the nodes. Bud outgrowth is probably stimulated by cytokinin produced locally in the bud.

Trehalose, an alpha,alpha-diglucoside, induced a rapid blackening and death of shoot tips of Cuscuta reflexa (dodder) cultured in vitro. The onset of toxic symptom was delayed if any of the several sugars which support the in vitro growth of Cuscuta was supplied with trehalose. The rate of trehalose uptake or its accumulation in the tissue was not affected by sugar cofeeding. The levels of total and reducing sugars declined appreciably in the trehalose-fed shoot tip explants compared to control tissue cultured in absence of a carbon source. This was not due to an increased rate of respiration of the trehalose-treated tissue. In shoot tips cultured in presence of both trehalose and sucrose, the decline in total and reducing sugars was curtailed. There was a marked fall in the level of sucrose; and invertase activity was higher in trehalose-fed shoot tips. The incorporation of label from [14C]glucose into sucrose in the shoot tip explant was reduced as early as 12 h of trehalose feeding. The results suggest that increased utilization of sucrose as well as an inhibition of its synthesis contribute to the drastic fall in the sucrose content upon trehalose feeding.

Gibberellic acid (GA3) induced a marked elongation of 2.5-centimeter shoot tips of Cuscuta chinensis Lamk. cultured in vitro. In terms of the absolute amount of elongation, this growth may be the largest reported for an isolated plant system. The response to hormone was dependent on an exogenous carbohydrate supply. The hormone-stimulated growth was due to both cell division and cell elongation. The growth response progressively decreased if GA3 was given at increasingly later times after culturing, but the decreased growth response could be restored by the application of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) to the apex. Explants deprived of GA3 gradually lost their ability to transport IAA basipetally, but this ability was also restored by auxin application. The observations are explained on the basis that: (a) the growth of Cuscuta shoot tip in vitro requires, at least, both an auxin and a gibberellin; and (b) in the absence of gibberellin the cultured shoot tip explants lose the ability to produce and/or transport auxin.

The equivalent circuit parameters for a pentacene organic field-effect transistor are determined from low frequency impedance measurements in the dark as well as under light illumination. The source-drain channel impedance parameters are obtained from Bode plot analysis and the deviations at low frequency are mainly due to the contact impedance. The charge accumulation at organic semiconductor-metal interface and dielectric-semiconductor interface is monitored from the response to light as an additional parameter to find out the contributions arising from photovoltaic and photoconductive effects. The shift in threshold voltage is due to the accumulation of photogenerated carriers under source-drain electrodes and at dielectric-semiconductor interface, and also this dominates the carrier transport. The charge carrier trapping at various interfaces and in the semiconductor is estimated from the dc and ac impedance measurements under illumination. We describe two techniques to create sharp tips. The first involves the buckling of thin metal films deposited on soft, stretchable substrates. The second involves the formation of narrow necked capillary bridges.

Multi-site damage need to be addressed and evaluated in order to assess the integrity of aging aircraft structures. One of the problems recognized in the recent times is the effect of interaction between two or more cracks in the close neighborhood in such structures. The present paper deals with such a problem and presents numerical estimates of stress intensity factors at a crack tip in an un-stiffened curved panel with a secondary crack in the vicinity of a primary crack. The results are presented in the form of design charts. These results should be useful in evaluation in the damage tolerance evaluation of aircraft structures with multi-site damage. Fluctuation of field emission current from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) poses certain difficulties for their use in nanobiomedical X-ray devices and imaging probes. This problem arises due to deformation of the CNTs due to electrodynamic force field and electron-phonon interaction. It is of great importance to have precise control of emitted electron beams very near the CNT tips. In this paper, a new array configuration with stacked array of CNTs is analysed and it is shown that the current density distribution is greatly localised at the middle of the array, that the scatter due to electrodynamic force field is minimised and that the temperature transients are much smaller compared to those in an array with random height distribution.

Plates with V-through edge notches subjected to pure bending and specimens with rectangular edge-through-notches subjected to combined bending and axial pull were investigated (under live-load and stress-frozen conditions) in a completely nondestructive manner using scattered-light photoelasticity. Stress-intensity factors (SIFs) were evaluated by analysing the singular stress distributions near crack-tips. Improved methods are suggested for the evaluation of SIFs. The thickness-wise variation of SIFs is also obtained in the investigation. The results obtained are compared with the available theoretical solutions.

Embryogenesis has been induced from endosperm callus cultures of sandalwood (Santalum album L.). Viable plantlets developed from the embryoids on subculture to White's basal medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l of indole acetic acid. Chromosomal analysis of the root tips showed the triploid number 3n = 30.

a,a-Trehalose induced a rapid blackening of the terminal 2.5-centimeter region of excised Cuscuta relexa Roxb. vine. The incorporation of radioactivity from [I'C]glucose into alkali-insoluble fraction of shoot tip was markedly inhibited by 12 hours of trehalose feeding to an excised vine. This inhibition was confied to the apical segment of the vine in which cell elongation occurred. The rate of blackening of shoot tip explants was hastened by the addition of gibberellic acid A3, which promoted elongation growth of isolated Cuscuta shoot tips. The symptom of trehalose toxicity was duplicated by 2-deoxygucose, which has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of ceD wall synthesis in yeast. The observations suggest that trehalose interferes with the synthesis of ceDl wail polysaccharides, the chief component of which was presumed to be cellulose.

Drop formation at the conical tips of melting rods has been experimentally studied using the transparent wax-alcohol/acetonitrile system. The effects of cone angle, rod diameter, immersion depth, and bath temperature on the detached drop mass have been studied over a wide range, besides recording useful qualitative information based on visual observation. The experimental results suggest that the phenomenon of drop formation at the tip of melting rods has a close parallel with the drop formation at conical tips, at least on a qualitative basis. However, the results could not be quantified owing to difficulties in characterizing the physical properties of the system, despite efforts to minimize them.
