The stability characteristics of a Helmholtz velocity profile in a stratified Boussinesq fluid in the presence of a rigid boundary is studied, A jump in the magnetic field is introduced at a level different from the velocity discontinuity. New unstable modes in addition to the Kelvin-Helmhottz mode are found. The wavelengths of these unstable modes are close to the wavelengths of internal Alfv6n gravity waves in the atmospher.

The stability characteristics of a Helmholtz velocity profile in a stably stratified, compressible atmosphere in the presence of a lower boundary are studied. A jump in the Brunt–Väisälä frequency is introduced and the level at which this jump occurs is assumed to be different from the shear zone, to simulate sharp temperature discontinuities in the atmosphere. The results are compared with those of Pellacani, Tebaldi, and Tosi and Lindzen and Rosenthal. In the present configuration, new unstable modes with larger growth rates are found. The wavelengths of the most unstable gravity waves for the parameters pertaining to observed cases of clear air turbulence agree quite closely with the experimental values. Instabilities induced by variation of Brunt-Vaisala frequency in compressible stratified shear flows
Resumo:
The stability characteristics of a Helmholtz velocity profile in a stably stratified, compressible fluid in the presence of a lower rigid boundary are studied. A jump in the Brunt-Vaisala frequency at a level different from the shear zone is introduced and the variation of the Brunt-Vaisala frequency with respect to the vertical coordinate in the middle layer of the three-layered model is considered. An analytic solution in each of the layers is obtained, and the dispersion relation is solved numerically for parameters relevant to the model. The effect of shear in the lowermost layer of the three-layered model for a Boussinesq fluid is discussed. The results are compared with the earlier studies of Lindzen and Rosenthal, and Sachdev and Satya Narayanan. In the present model, new unstable modes with larger growth rates are obtained and the most unstable gravity wave modes are found to agree closely with the observed ones at various heights. The motion generated by forced oscillations in an incompressible inviscid rotating and/or stratified fluid is examined under linear theory taking the density variation on the inertia terms. The solution consists of numerous internal modes in addition to the mode which oscillates with forcing frequency. Resonance occurs when the forcing frequency is equal to one of the frequencies of the internal modes. Some of these modes grow linearly or exponentially with time rendering the motion unstable and eventually may lead to turbulence. Most of the results discussed here will be missed under Boussinesq approximation.

The motion due to an oscillatory point source in a rotating stratified fluid has been studied by Sarma & Naidu (1972) by using threefold Fourier transforms. The solution obtained by them in the hyperbolic case is wrong since they did not make use of any radiation condition, which is always necessary to get the correct solution. Whenever the motion is created by a source, the condition of radiation is that the sources must remain sources, not sinks of energy and no energy may be radiated from infinity into the prescribed singularities of the field. The purpose of the present note is to explain how Lighthill's (1960) radiation condition can be applied in the hyperbolic case to pick the correct solution. Further, the solution thus obtained is reiterated by an alternative procedure using Sommerfeld's (1964) radiation condition.
Time-dependent flows of rotating and stratified fluids in geometries with non-uniform cross-sections
Resumo:
Unsteady rotating and stratified flows in geometries with non-uniform cross-sections are investigated under Oseen approximation using Laplace transform technique. The solutions are obtained in closed form and they reveal that the flow remains oscillatory even after infinitely large time. The existence of inertial waves propagating in both positive and negative directions of the flow is observed. When the Rossby or Froude number is close to a certain infinite set of critical values the blocking and back flow occur and the flow pattern becomes more and more complicated with increasing number of stagnant zones when each critical value is crossed. The analogy that is observed in the solutions for rotating and stratified flows is also discussed.

The Hybrid approach introduced by the authors for at-site modeling of annual and periodic streamflows in earlier works is extended to simulate multi-site multi-season streamflows. It bears significance in integrated river basin planning studies. This hybrid model involves: (i) partial pre-whitening of standardized multi-season streamflows at each site using a parsimonious linear periodic model; (ii) contemporaneous resampling of the resulting residuals with an appropriate block size, using moving block bootstrap (non-parametric, NP) technique; and (iii) post-blackening the bootstrapped innovation series at each site, by adding the corresponding parametric model component for the site, to obtain generated streamflows at each of the sites. It gains significantly by effectively utilizing the merits of both parametric and NP models. It is able to reproduce various statistics, including the dependence relationships at both spatial and temporal levels without using any normalizing transformations and/or adjustment procedures. The potential of the hybrid model in reproducing a wide variety of statistics including the run characteristics, is demonstrated through an application for multi-site streamflow generation in the Upper Cauvery river basin, Southern India.
