In recent years, spatial variability modeling of soil parameters using random field theory has gained distinct importance in geotechnical analysis. In the present Study, commercially available finite difference numerical code FLAC 5.0 is used for modeling the permeability parameter as spatially correlated log-normally distributed random variable and its influence on the steady state seepage flow and on the slope stability analysis are studied. Considering the case of a 5.0 m high cohesive-frictional soil slope of 30 degrees, a range of coefficients of variation (CoV%) from 60 to 90% in the permeability Values, and taking different values of correlation distance in the range of 0.5-15 m, parametric studies, using Monte Carlo simulations, are performed to study the following three aspects, i.e., (i) effect ostochastic soil permeability on the statistics of seepage flow in comparison to the analytic (Dupuit's) solution available for the uniformly constant permeability property; (ii) strain and deformation pattern, and (iii) stability of the given slope assessed in terms of factor of safety (FS). The results obtained in this study are useful to understand the role of permeability variations in slope stability analysis under different slope conditions and material properties. Cylindrical specimens of commercial pure titanium have been compressed at strain rates in the range of 0.1 to 100 s-1 and temperatures in the range of 25-degrees-C to 400-degrees-C. At strain rates of 10 and 100 s-1, the specimens exhibited adiabatic shear bands. At lower strain rates, the material deformed in an inhomogeneous fashion. These material-related instabilities are examined in the light of the ''phenomenological model'' and the ''dynamic materials mode.'' It is found that the regime of adiabatic shear band formation is predicted by the phenomenological model, while the dynamic materials model is able to predict the inhomogeneous deformation zone. The criterion based on power partitioning is competent to predict the variations within the inhomogeneous deformation zone.

The steady mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent Maxwell fluid in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and Joule heating have been studied. The stretching velocity, surface temperature and magnetic field are assumed to have specific exponential function forms for the existence of the local similarity solution. The coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations governing the local similarity flow and heat transfer have been solved numerically by Chebyshev finite difference method. The influence of the buoyancy parameter, viscous dissipation, relaxation parameter of Maxwell fluid, magnetic field and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer has been considered in detail. The Nusselt number increases significantly with the Prandtl number, but the skin friction coefficient decreases. The Nusselt number slightly decreases with increasing viscous dissipation parameter, but the skin friction coefficient slightly increases. Maxwell fluid reduces both skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number, whereas buoyancy force enhances them.

The deformation characteristics of 304L stainless steel in compression in the temperature range 20–700°C and strain rate range 0·001–100 s−1 have been studied with the aim of characterising the .flow instabilities occurring in the microstructure. At higher temperatures and strain rates the stainless steel exhibits flow localisation, whereas at temperatures below 500°C and strain rates lower than 0·1 s−1 the flow instabilities are due to dynamic strain aging. Strain induced martensite formation is responsible for the flow instabilities at room temperature and low strain rates (0·01 s−1). In view of the occurrence of these instabilities, cold working is preferable to warm working to achieve dimensional tolerance and reproducible properties in the product. Among the different criteria tested to explain the occurrence of instabilities, the continuum criterion, developed on the basis of the principles of maximum rate of entropy production and separability of the dissipation function, predicts accurately all the above instability features.

Model free simulations are performed to study the effect of the presence of side wall in compressible mixing of two parallel dissimilar gaseous streams with significant temperature difference. The turbulence statistics shows the three dimensional nature of the flow with and without the presence of side walls. The presence of side wall neither makes the flow field two dimensional, nor suppresses three dimensional disturbances. However, the comparison of shear layer growth rate and wall pressures reveal a better match with the two dimensional simulation results. This better match is explained on the basis of formation of oblique structures due to the presence of side walls which also suppress the distribution of momentum in third direction making the pressures to be higher as compared with the case without side walls. Administration of the antihypercholesterolaemic drug clofibrate stimulates the rates of synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins in rat liver. The biosynthesis of mitochondrial proteins also is enhanced by the drug. In drug-fed animals, the rates of incorporation in vivo of radioactive precursors into DNA, RNA and proteins are stimulated even when the liver undergoes regeneration following partial hepatectomy. The rate of synthesis of mitochondrial proteins in the regenerative phase is higher in clofibrate-fed animals. These effects are consistent with the hepatomegalic and mitochondria-proliferating property of the drug.

THE addition of catalysts normally serves the purpose of imparting a desired burning rate change in a composite propellant. These may either retard or enhance the burning rate. Some often quoted catalysts are oxides, chromites and chromates of metals. A lot of work has been done on rinding the effect of the addition of some of these catalysts on the burning rate; however, none seems to have appeared on the influence of lithium fluoride (LiF). Only qualitative reduction in the burning rate of composite propellants with the addition of LiF was reported by Williams et al.1 Dickinson and Jackson2 reported a slight decrease in the specific impulse of composite propellant with the addition of LiF; however, they made no mention of the effect of its addition on the burning rate. We have studied the effect of the addition of varying amounts of LiF on the burning rate of Ammonium Perchlorate (AP)-Polyester propellant.

Two methods were employed to measure the rate of ribonucleic acid (RNA) chain growth in vivo in Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv cultures growing in Sauton medium at 37 degrees C, with a generation time of 10 h. In the first, the bacteria were allowed to assimilate [3H]uracil or [3H]guanine into their RNA for short time periods. The RNA was then extracted and hydrolyzed with alkali, and the radioactivity in the resulting nucleotides and nucleosides was measured. The data obtained by this method allowed the calculation of the individual nucleotide step times during the growth of RNA chains, from which the average rate of RNA chain elongation was estimated to be about 4 nucleotides per s. The second method employed the antibiotic rifampin, which specifically inhibits the initiation of RNA synthesis without interfering with the elongation and completion of nascent RNA chains. Usint this method, the transcription time of the 16S, 23S, and 5S ribosomal RNA genes was estimated to be 7.6 min, which corresponds to a ribosomal RNA chain growth rate of 10 nucleotides per s.
