We propose a unified model to explain Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO), particularly of high frequency, observed from black hole and neutron star systems globally. We consider accreting systems to be damped harmonic oscillators exhibiting epicyclic oscillations with higher-order nonlinear resonance to explain QPO. The resonance is expected to be driven by the disturbance from the compact object at its spin frequency. The model explains various properties parallelly for both types of the compact object. It describes QPOs successfully for ten different compact sources. Based on this, we predict the spin frequency of the neutron star Sco X-1 and specific angular momentum of black holes GRO J1655–40, XTE J1550–564, H1743–322, and GRS 1915+105.

The unsteady laminar compressible boundary-layer flow over two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies at the stagnation point with mass transfer has been studied for all second-order boundary layer effects when the basic potential flow admits selfsimilarity. The solutions for the governing equations are obtained by using an implicit finite-difference scheme. Computations have been carried out for different values of the parameters characterizing the unsteadiness in the free stream velocity, wall temperature, mass transfer rate and variable gas properties. The results are found to be strongly affected by the unsteadiness in the free stream velocity. For large injection rates the second-orderboundary layer effects may prevail over the first-order boundary layer, but reverse is true for suction. The wall temperature and the variation of the density-viscosity product across the boundary layer appreciably change the skin-friction and heat-transfer rates due to second-order boundary-layer effects.

Vacuum pyrolysis of ammonium perchlorate (AP) and ammonium perchlorate/polystyrene (PS) propellant has been studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA) in order to observe the effect of transition metal oxides on sublimation. Sublimation and decomposition being competitive processes, their proportions depend on the pressure of the pyrolysis chamber. The enthalpies for complete decomposition and complete sublimation are available from the literature and by using these data together with DTA area measurements, the extents of sublimation and decomposition have been calculated for AP and the propellant system. The effect of the metal ions on the extent and rate of sublimation depends on their nature. For AP the extent of sublimation increases with a decrease in particle size. For the propellants the powder sublimes more readily than the bulk material, but in the presence of metal ions the bulk material sublimes more readily than the powder. To substantiate this finding, the effect of MnO2 on AP sublimation as a function of particle size was examined, and it was observed that the extent of sublimation decreases as the particle size decreases.

The photocatalytic inactivation of Escherischia coli and Pichia Pastoris was studied with combustion synthesized titanium dioxide photocatalysts Three different combustion synthesized (CS) catalysts were used viz CS-TiO2 1% Ag substituted in TiO2 and 1% Ag impregnated in TiO2 All the combustion synthesized catalysts showed higher activity as compared to the activity observed with commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2 The effect of various parameters like catalyst loading different catalysts and initial cell concentration was studied At the optimum loading 1% Ag impregnated TiO2 showed the maximum efficiency and complete inactivation of both the microorganisms was observed within an hour of irradiation The morphology of inactivated cells was studied by inverted microscope and SEM From the images obtained it was hypothesized that damage to the cell wall was the main cause of cell inactivation The initial cell concentration had a prominent effect on the inactivation At a low initial cell concentration the complete inactivation of E cob and P pastoris was observed within 10 and 20 min respectively This shows that P pastoris has a stronger resistance towards photocatalytic inactivation than E cols The inactivation reactions were modeled with power law kinetics The order of reaction in case of E colt and P pastoris were determined as 1 20 and 1 08 respectively (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Organic nanoparticles consisting of single conjugated polymer chains were investigated as a function of degree of conjugation by means of single-molecule spectroscopy. The degree of conjugation was synthetically controlled. For highly conjugated chains, singlet excitons are efficiently funneled over nanometer distances to a small number of sites. In contrast, chains with less conjugation and a high number of saturated bonds do not exhibit energy funneling due to a highly disordered conformation.

The transmission loss (TL) performance of spherical chambers having single inlet and multiple outlet is obtained analytically through modal expansion of acoustic field inside the spherical cavity in terms of the spherical Bessel functions and Legendre polynomials. The uniform piston driven model based upon the impedance [Z] matrix is used to characterize the multi-port spherical chamber. It is shown analytically that the [Z] parameters are independent of the azimuthal angle (phi) due to the axisymmetric shape of the sphere; rather, they depend only upon the polar angle (theta) and radius of the chamber R(0). Thus, the effects of relative polar angular location of the ports and number of outlet ports are investigated. The analytical results are shown to be in good agreement with the 3D FEA results, thereby validating the procedure suggested in this work.

Transmission loss (TL) of an elliptical cylindrical chamber muffler having a single side/end inlet and multiple side/end outlet is analyzed by means of the 3-D semi-analytical formulation based upon the modal expansion (in terms of the angular and radial Mathieu functions) and the Green's function. The acoustic pressure response obtained in terms of Green's function is integrated over surface area of the side/end ports (modeled as rigid pistons) and upon subsequent division by the port area, yields the acoustic pressure response or impedance Z] matrix parameters due to the uniform piston-driven model. The 3-D semi-analytical results are found to be in excellent agreement with the results obtained by means of 3-D FEA (SYSNOISE) simulations, thereby validating the semi-analytical procedure suggested in this work. Parametric studies such as the effect of chamber length (L), angular and axial locations of the ports, interchanging the locations of inlet and outlet ports as well as the addition of an outlet port for double outlet mufflers on the TL performance are reported, thereby leading to the formulation of design guidelines for obtaining muffler configurations exhibiting a broad-band TL spectrum. One such configuration is an axially long chamber having side-inlet and side-outlet ports such that one of the side ports is located at half the axial length on themajor/minor axis and the other side port is located at three-quarters (or one-quarter) of the axial length on the minor/major axis. We study the statistical properties of orientation and rotation dynamics of elliptical tracer particles in two-dimensional, homogeneous, and isotropic turbulence by direct numerical simulations. We consider both the cases in which the turbulent flow is generated by forcing at large and intermediate length scales. We show that the two cases are qualitatively different. For large-scale forcing, the spatial distribution of particle orientations forms large-scale structures, which are absent for intermediate-scale forcing. The alignment with the local directions of the flow is much weaker in the latter case than in the former. For intermediate-scale forcing, the statistics of rotation rates depends weakly on the Reynolds number and on the aspect ratio of particles. In contrast with what is observed in three-dimensional turbulence, in two dimensions the mean-square rotation rate increases as the aspect ratio increases.
