Three independent studies have been reported on the free energy of formation of NiWO4. Results of these measurements are analyzed by the third-law method, using thermal functions for NiWO4 derived from both low and high temperature heat capacity measurements. Values for the standard molar enthalpy of formation of NiWO4 at 298·15 K obtained from third-law analysis are compared with direct calorimetric determinations. Only one set of free energy measurements is found to be compatible with calorimetric enthalpies of formation. The selected value for ?f H m 0 (NiWO4, cr, 298·15 K) is the average of the three calorimetric measurements, using both high temperature solution and combustion techniques, and the compatible free energy determination. A new set of evaluated data for NiWO4 is presented.

The standard molar Gibbs energies of formation of YbPt3 and LuPt3 intermetallic compounds have been measured in the temperature range 880 K to 1100 K using the solid-state cells:View the MathML source and View the MathML source The trifluoride of Yb is not stable in equilibrium with Yb or YbPt3. The results can be expressed by the equations: View the MathML source View the MathML source The standard molar Gibbs energy of formation of LuPt3 is −41.1 kJ · mol−1 more negative than that for YbPt3 at 1000 K. Ytterbium is divalent in the pure metal and trivalent in the intermetallic YbPt3. The energy required for the promotion of divalent Yb to the trivalent state is responsible for the less negative ΔfGmo of YbPt3. The enthalpies of formation of the two intermetallics are in reasonable agreement with Miedema's model. Because of the extraordinary stability of these compounds it is possible to reduce oxides of Yb and Lu with hydrogen in the presence of platinum at View the MathML source. The equilibrium chemical potential of oxygen corresponding to the reduction of Yb2O3 and Lu2O3 by hydrogen in the presence of platinum is presented in the form of an Ellingham diagram.

The thermodynamic activities of MgO in the NaCl-type solid solutions which can exist in xMgO + (1 x)MnO have been determined in the temperature range 1163 to 1318 K from a solid-state galvanic cell incorporating MgF2 as the solid electrolyte. The activities of MnO have been calculated by a graphical Gibbs-Duhem integration method. The activities of both the components exhibit positive deviations from ideality over the entire composition range. The excess molar enthalpies are found to be positive. Further, xMgO + (1 - x)MnO does not conform to regular-solution behaviour. The origin of the excess thermodynamic properties is discussed in relation to the cationic size disparity and the crystal-field effects.

The standard molar Gibbs free energy of formation of Co2TiO4, CoTiO3,and CoTi2O5 as a function of temperature over an extended range (900 to 1675) K was measured using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte, with CoO as reference electrode and appropriate working electrodes. For the formation of the three compounds from their component oxides CoO with rock-salt and TiO2 with rutile structure, the Gibbs free energy changes are given by:Delta(f)G degrees((ox))(Co2TiO4) +/- 104/(J . mol(-1)) = -18865 - 4.108 (T/K)Delta(f)G degrees((ox))(CoTiO3) +/- 56/(J . mol(-1)) = -19627 + 2.542 (T/K) Delta(f)G degrees((ox))(CoTi2O5) +/- 52/(J . mol(-1)) = -6223 - 6.933 (T/K) Accurate values for enthalpy and entropy of formation were derived. The compounds Co2TiO4 with spinel structure and CoTi2O5 with pseudo-brookite structure were found to be entropy stabilized. The relatively high entropy of these compounds arises from the mixing of cations on specific crystallographic sites. The stoichiometry of CoTiO3 was confirmed by inert gas fusion analysis for oxygen. Because of partial oxidation of cobalt in air, the composition corresponding to the compound Co2TiO4 falls inside a two-phase field containing the spinet solid solution Co2TiO4-Co3O4 and CoTiO3. The spinel solid solution becomes progressively enriched in Co3O4 with decreasing temperature. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The enthalpy increments and the standard molar Gibbs energy of formation of NdFeO3(s) have been measured using a hightemperature Calvet microcalorimeter and a solid oxide galvanic cell, respectively. A lambda-type transition, related to magnetic order-disorder transformation (antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic), is apparent from the heat capacity data at similar to 687 K. Enthalpy increments, except in the vicinity of transition, can be represented by a polynomial expression: {Hdegrees(m)(T)-Hdegrees(m) (298.15 K)} /J(.)mol(-1) (+/- 0.7%)=-53625.6+146.0(T/K) +1.150 X 10(-4)(T/K)(2) +3.007 x 10(6)(T/K)(-1); (298.15 less than or equal to T/K less than or equal to 1000). The heat capacity, the first differential of {Hdegrees(m)(T)-Hdegrees(m)(298.15 K)}with respect to temperature, is given by Cdegrees(pm)/J(.)K(-1.)mol(-1)=146.0+ 2.30x10(-4) (T/K) - 3.007 X 10(6)(T/K)(-2). It can be represented within experimental error by a linear equation: E/V=(0.1418 +/- 0.0003)-(3.890 +/- 0.023) x 10(-5)(T/K). The Gibbs energy of formation of solid NdFeO, calculated by the least-squares regression analysis of the data obtained in the present study, and data for Fe0.95O and Nd2O3 from the literature, is given by Delta(f)Gdegrees(m)(NdFeO3 s)/kJ (.) mol(-1)( +/- 2.0)=1345.9+0.2542(T/K); (1000 less than or equal to T/K less than or equal to 1650). The error in Delta(f)Gdegrees(m)(NdFeO3, s, T) includes the standard deviation in emf and the uncertainty in the data taken from the literature. Values of Delta(f)Hdegrees(m)(NdFeO3, s, 298.15 K) and Sdegrees(m) (NdFeO3 s, 298.15 K) calculated by the second law method are - 1362.5 (+/-6) kJ (.) mol(-1) and 123.9 (+/-2.5) J (.) A significant amount of research on the thermodynamic properties of molten alloys is undertaken for obtaining insights into their structure . The partial and integral molar enthalpies, entropies and volumes of mixing provide some general information on the nature and strength of atomic bonds and the distribution of atoms. However, until recently it has been difficult to derive specific quantitative information because the excess entropy of mixing contains configurational , vibrational , electronic , and sometimes magnetic contributions which cannot be easily separated.

The Gibbs’ energies of formation of Pt5La, Pt5Ce, Pt5Pr, Pt5Tb and Pt5 Tm intermetallic compounds have been determined in the temperature range 870–1100 K using the solid state cell:Ta,M + MF3 /CaF2 /Pt5 M + Pt + MF3 ,TaTaM+MF3CaF2Pt5M+Pt+MF3Ta.The reversible emf of the cell is directly related to the Gibbs’ energy of formation of the Pt5M compound. The results can be summarized by the equations:DGf° á Pt5 La ñ = - 373,150 + 6 ·60 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Ce ñ = - 367,070 + 5 ·79 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Pr ñ = - 370,540 + 4 ·69 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Tb ñ = - 372,280 + 4 ·11 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Tm ñ = - 368,230 + 4 ·89 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 Unknown control sequence '\hfill'relative to the low temperature allotropic form of the lanthanide element and solid platinum as standard states The enthalpies of formation of all the Pt5M intermetallic compounds obtained in this study are in good agreement with Miedema’s model. The experimental values are more negative than those calculated using the model. The variation of the thermodynamic properties of Pt5M compounds with atomic number of the lanthanide element is discussed in relation to valence state and molar volume.

Extensive molecular dynamics studies of 13 different silica polymorphs are reported in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble with the Parrinello-Rahman variable shape simulation cell. The van Beest-Kramer-van Santen (BKS) potential is shown to predict lattice parameters for most phases within 2%-3% accuracy, as well as the relative stabilities of different polymorphs in agreement with experiment. Enthalpies of high-density polymorphs - CaCl2-type, alpha-PbO2-type, and pyrite-type for which no experimental data are available as yet, are predicted here. Further, the calculated enthalpies exhibit two distinct regimes as a function of molar volume-for low and medium-density polymorphs, it is almost independent of volume, while for high-pressure phases a steep dependence is seen. A detailed analysis indicates that the increased short-range contributions to enthalpy in the high-density phases arise not only from an increased coordination number of silicon but also shorter Si-O bond lengths. Our results indicate that amorphous phases of silica exhibit better optimization of short-range interactions than crystalline phases at the same density while the magnitude of Coulombic contributions is lower in the amorphous phase. High temperature reaction calorimetry using molten lead berate as solvent has been used to study the thermochemistry of NdMnO3, YMnO3, La1-xSrxMnO3 (with 0 < x < 0.5), and Ln(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) (with Ln = La, Nd, Y), The enthalpies of formation of these multicomponent oxides from their binary constituents have been calculated from the measured enthalpy of drop solution, The energetic stability of the perovskite depends on the size of the A cation, The enthalpy of formation of YMnO3 (smallest A cation) is more endothermic than those of NdMnO3 and LaMnO3. The energetics of the perovskite also depends on the oxidation state of the B site's ions. In the La1-xSrxMnO3 system, the energetic stability of the structure increases with the Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio, The new values of the enthalpies of oxidations, with reliable standard entropies, were used to plot the phase stability diagram of the lanthanum-manganese-oxygen system in the temperature range 300-1100 K, The LaMnO3/MnO phase boundary evaluated in this study agrees with the one published by Atsumi et nl. calculated from thermogravimetric and conductivity measurements.

A series of bimetallic acetylacetonate (acac) complexes, AlxCr1-x(acac)(3), 0 <= x <= 1, have been synthesized for application as precursors for the CVD Of Substituted oxides, such as (AlxCr1-x)(2)O-3. Detailed thermal analysis has been carried out on these complexes, which are solids that begin subliming at low temperatures, followed by melting, and evaporation from the melt. By applying the Langmuir equation to differential thermogravimetry data, the vapour pressure of these complexes is estimated. From these vapour pressure data, the distinctly different enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation are calculated, using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Such a determination of both the enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation of complexes, which sublime and melt congruently, does not appear to have been reported in the literature to date.

The enthalpies of reaction between aniline and HCHO at various molar proportions under neutral conditions were determined by solution calorimetry. These measurements are new in the field of aniline and HCHO condensation polymers. The specific heats of the products formed were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and were used in the enthalpy calculations. Plots of enthalpy of reaction calculated with respect to aniline and HCHO vs. different A/F molar ratios were made. From the enthalpy data it appears that the reactions between different A/F molar ratios yield different products.
