The confusion over the growth rate of the Nb3Sn superconductor compound following the bronze technique is addressed. Furthermore, a possible explanation for the corrugated structure of the product phase in the multifilamentary structure is discussed. Kirkendall marker experiments are conducted to study the relative mobilities of the species, which also explains the reason for finding pores in the product phase layer. The movement of the markers after interdiffusion reflects that Sn is the faster diffusing species. Furthermore, different concentrations of Sn in the bronze alloy are considered to study the effect of Sn content on the growth rate. Based on the parabolic growth constant at different temperatures, the activation energy for the growth is determined.

The correlation dimension D 2 and correlation entropy K 2 are both important quantifiers in nonlinear time series analysis. However, use of D 2 has been more common compared to K 2 as a discriminating measure. One reason for this is that D 2 is a static measure and can be easily evaluated from a time series. However, in many cases, especially those involving coloured noise, K 2 is regarded as a more useful measure. Here we present an efficient algorithmic scheme to compute K 2 directly from a time series data and show that K 2 can be used as a more effective measure compared to D 2 for analysing practical time series involving coloured noise.

A detailed study of the solvation dynamics of a charged coumarin dye molecule in gamma-cyclodextrin/water has been carried out by using two different theoretical approaches. The first approach is based on a multishell continuum model (MSCM). This model predicts the time scales of the dynamics rather well, provided an accurate description of the frequency-dependent dielectric function is supplied. The reason for this rather surprising agreement is 2-fold. First, there is a cancellation of errors, second, the two-zone model mimics the heterogeneous microenvironment surrounding the ion rather well. The second approach is based on the molecular hydrodynamics theory (MI-IT). In this molecular approach, the solvation dynamics has been studied by restricting the translational motion of the solvent molecules enclosed within the cavity. The results from the molecular theory are also in good agreement with the experimental results. Our study indicates that, in the present case, the restricted environment affects only the long time decay of the solvation time correlation function. The short time dynamics is still governed by the librational (and/or vibrational) modes present in bulk water.

In this paper, we present results on water flow past randomly textured hydrophobic surfaces with relatively large surface features of the order of 50 µm. Direct shear stress measurements are made on these surfaces in a channel configuration. The measurements indicate that the flow rates required to maintain a shear stress value vary substantially with water immersion time. At small times after filling the channel with water, the flow rates are up to 30% higher compared with the reference hydrophilic surface. With time, the flow rate gradually decreases and in a few hours reaches a value that is nearly the same as the hydrophilic case. Calculations of the effective slip lengths indicate that it varies from about 50 µm at small times to nearly zero or “no slip” after a few hours. Large effective slip lengths on such hydrophobic surfaces are known to be caused by trapped air pockets in the crevices of the surface. In order to understand the time dependent effective slip length, direct visualization of trapped air pockets is made in stationary water using the principle of total internal reflection of light at the water-air interface of the air pockets. These visualizations indicate that the number of bright spots corresponding to the air pockets decreases with time. This type of gradual disappearance of the trapped air pockets is possibly the reason for the decrease in effective slip length with time in the flow experiments. From the practical point of usage of such surfaces to reduce pressure drop, say, in microchannels, this time scale of the order of 1 h for the reduction in slip length would be very crucial. It would ultimately decide the time over which the surface can usefully provide pressure drop reductions. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

For any construction activity in expansive soils, determination of swelling pressure/heave is an essential step. Though many attempts have been made to develop laboratory procedures by using the laboratory one-dimensional oedometer to determine swelling pressure of expansive soils, they are reported to yield varying results. The main reason for these variations could be heterogeneous moisture distribution of the sample over its thickness. To overcome this variation the experimental procedure should be such that the soil gets fully saturated. Attempts were made to introduce vertical sand drains in addition to the top and bottom drains. In this study five and nine vertical sand drains were introduced to experimentally find out the variations in the swell and swelling pressure. The variations in the moisture content at middle, top, and bottom of the sample in the oedometer test are also reported. It is found that swell-load method is better as compared to zero-swell method. Further, five number of vertical sand drains are found to be sufficient to obtain uniform moisture content distribution.

Permeation of gases through single surfactant stabilized aqueous films has previously been studied in view of the potentiality of foam to separate gaseous mixtures. The earlier analysis assumed that the gas phase was well mixed and that the mass-transfer process was completely controlled by the liquid film. Permeabilities evaluated from single film data based on such analysis failed to predict the mass-transfer data obtained on permeation through two films. It is shown that the neglect of gas-phase resistance and the effect of film movement is the reason for the failure of the well-mixed gas models. An exact analysis of diffusion through two films is presented. It successfully predicts the experimental data on two films based on parameters evaluated from single film data.

Oxidation of di-tert-butyl thioketone (1) and 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutylth ioketone (2) by singlet oxygen yields the corresponding sulfine and ketone; in the case of 1 the sulfine is the major product, whereas in 2 it is the ketone. 1,2,3-Dioxathietane has been suggested as the precursor for the ketones, and the zwitterionic/diradid peroxide is believed to be a common primary intermediate for both sulfine and ketone. Steric influence is felt both during primary interaction between singlet oxygen and thioketone and during the partitioning of the peroxide intermediate. Steric interaction is suggested as the reason for variations in the product distribution between 1 and 2. Singlet oxygen is also generated through energy transfer from the triplet state of thioketones. These excited states also directly react with oxygen to yield ketone.

Both diglycine sulphate (DGS) and diglycine sulphate monohydrate (DGS.H2O) are reported to crystallize from solution with pH < 1(1,2). DGS.H2O (point group 2/m; Z = 4) shows a dielectric anomaly at 72°C suggestive of antiferroelectric transition(1). The crystals obtained by us from solution with pH < 0.5 at 20-25°C were always DGS (point group mmm; Z = 8) as confirmed by X-ray studies. The measurement of its dielectric constant along [100], [010] and [001] did not indicate any phase transition in the range 5-400°K. Thus DGS is a normal dielectric unlike TGS. The polarized Raman spectra and the infrared spectra were recorded to examine the configuration of glycine in DGS(3). The vibration spectra reveals that both the glycines in DGS exist as NH3+CH2COOH, thus precluding the hydrogen bond of the type N+-H…O- which exists between two glycine units in TGS. This seems to be a good reason for the difference in the dielectric behaviour of these two glycine sulphates.

A study of the hyperfine interaction in the ESR of coupled Cu---Cu pairs in single crystals of copper diethyldithiocarbamate as a function of temperature has shown distinct differences in the hyperfine structure in the two fine-structure transitions at 20 K; the spectrum does not have the usual binomial hyperfine pattern for the fine-structure transition of the low field in contrast to that of the high field. The details of the structure of both fine-structure transitions in the 20-K spectrum can be explained by recognizing the fact that the mixing of the nuclear spin states caused by the anisotropic hyperfine interaction affects the electron spin states |+1 and |−1 differently. The anomalous hyperfine structure is found to become symmetric at 77 and 300 K. It is proposed that the reason for this lies in the dynamics of spin-lattice interaction, which limits the lifetime of the spin states in each of the electronic levels |−1 , |0 , and |+1 . The estimate of spin-lattice relaxation time in the temperature range where the changes are observed agrees with those indicated by other studies. The model proposed here for the hyperfine interaction of pairs in the electronic triplet state is of general validity.

The primary structure of collagen is characterized by the repeating tripeptide sequence (Gly-R2-R3)n. The results of theoretical studies, carried out using contact criteria to compute the stereochemically allowed orientations for various side chains at locations 2 and 3, are reported here. It is found that side chains with only γ-atoms, as in valine, serine and threonine, or with only one δ-methyl group, as in isoleucine, can occur equally well at locations 2 and 3, as is actually the case in collagen. Side chains with two Cδ-atoms, as in leucine and phenyl-alanine, can also be accommodated at both positions. However, if they occur as R3 their freedom of orientation is severely restricted in the presence of a proline residue as R2 in a neighbouring chain. If water molecules bound to the chains of the triple helix are assumed to be present, then location 3 is virtually impossible for leucine and phenylalanine residues. Location 2 is, however, unaffected, and their presence as R2 can help to shield the water molecules from disturbance by the solvent medium. This may be the reason for the preferential occurrence of Leu and Phe residues in location 2 in the collagen triplets, although the polypeptides (Gly-Pro-Leu)n and (Gly-Pro-Phe)n form collagen-like structures.

A novel racemization observed in the Vitamin B6-amino acid Schiff base complexes, aquo (5'-phosphopyridoxylidene-l-tyrosinato) copper(II) and aquo (5'-phosphopyridoxylidene-l-phenylalaninato) copper(II) is described. The racemization taking place in solution under mild acidic conditions (pH 5-6) was confirmed by CD studies and the products were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of both complexes show almost parallel orientation of the aromatic side chain and the pyridoxal II-system. The activation of the αCsingle bondH group due to the intermolecular II- interaction is probably the reason for the unusual racemization observed.

The synthesis and phosphorylation of protein factor(s) that bind to the positivecis-acting element (−69 to −98 nt) of the CYP2B1/B2 gene have been examinedin vivoin the rat. Treatment of rats with cycloheximide, a protein synthetic inhibitor, suppresses basal as well as phenobarbitone-induced levels of CYP2B1/B2 mRNA and its run-on transcription. Under these conditions, complex formation of the nuclear extract with the positive element is also inhibited, as judged by gel shift assays. Treatment of rats with 2-aminopurine, a general protein kinase inhibitor, blocks the phenobarbitone-mediated increase in CYP2B1/B2 mRNA, cell-free transcription of a minigene construct containing the positive element, pP450e179DNA, and binding of nuclear proteins to the positive element. Treatment of rats with okadaic acid, a protein phosphatase inhibitor, mimics the effects of phenobarbitone, but only partially. Thus, both phenobarbitone and okadaic acid individually enhance binding of the nuclear protein(s) to the positive element, cell-free transcription of the minigene construct, and phosphorylation of the not, vert, similar26- and 94-kDa proteins binding to the positive element. But unlike phenobarbitone, okadaic acid is not an inducer of CYP2B1/B2 mRNA or its run-on transcription. Thus, phenobarbitone-responsive positive element interactions constitute only a minimal requirement, and okadaic acid is perhaps not able to bring about the total requirement for activation of CYP2B1/B2 gene transcription that should include interaction between the minimal promoter and further upstream elements. An intriguing feature is the antagonistic effect of okadaic acid on phenobarbitone-mediated effects on CYP2B1/B2 mRNA levels, cell-free and run-on transcription, and nuclear protein binding to the positive element. The reason for this antagonism is not clear. It is concluded that phenobarbitone treatment enhancesin vivothe synthesis and phosphorylation of protein factors binding to the positive element and these constitute a minimal requirement for the transcriptional activation of the CYP2B1/B2 gene.

Interactions between carnivores during the defence of kills may be one reason why certain carnivores live in groups. This is especially true of lions, hyaenas and the African wild dog, The dhole or the Asiatic wild dog, primarily a pack living animal, has been observed to regularly interact with both tigers and leopards, Such interactions have taken place over kills and otherwise. In this report, five such interactions are described, It was found that the pack's behaviour of surrounding bushes acid trees on which the cat was confined precluded immediate escape. The presence of sentinels, while the pack was resting, warned the pack of the presence of a big cat and the pack grouped when a big cat appeared, Costs to both individuals within the dhole packs and the cats involved in the encounters were found to be slight, The reasons for such potentially costly encounters could be competition for finite food resources or thwarting predation, Dholes have a significant diet overlap with both leopards and tigers and aggressively encounter with leopards but not with tigers, Differences between diet overlaps may not be the basis behind the differences in aggression, It is more likely that, the small size of leopards and the fact that they predate more often on dholes, cause dhole packs to be more aggressive to leopards than to tigers, The size of carnivore groups may thus pose an advantage during competitive interactions among carnivore species.
