Character recognition — A review

The machine replication of human reading has been the subject of intensive research for more than three decades. A large number of research papers and reports have already been published on this topic. Many commercial establishments have manufactured recognizers of varying capabilities. Handheld, desk-top, medium-size and large systems costing as high as half a million dollars are available, and are in use for various applications. However, the ultimate goal of developing a reading machine having the same reading capabilities of humans still remains unachieved. So, there still is a great gap between human reading and machine reading capabilities, and a great amount of further effort is required to narrow-down this gap, if not bridge it. This review is organized into six major sections covering a general overview (an introduction), applications of character recognition techniques, methodologies in character recognition, research work in character recognition, some practical OCRs and the conclusions.

Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors for Real Time Monitoring of Evacuation Process

Fiber bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been widely used for number of sensing applications like temperature, pressure, acousto-ultrasonic, static and dynamic strain, refractive index change measurements and so on. Present work demonstrates the use of FBG sensors in in-situ measurement of vacuum process with simultaneous leak detection capability. Experiments were conducted in a bell jar vacuum chamber facilitated with conventional Pirani gauge for vacuum measurement. Three different experiments have been conducted to validate the performance of FBG sensor in monitoring vacuum creating process and air bleeding. The preliminary results of FBG sensors in vacuum monitoring have been compared with that of commercial Pirani gauge sensor. This novel technique offers a simple alternative to conventional method for real time monitoring of evacuation process. Proposed FBG based vacuum sensor has potential applications in vacuum systems involving hazardous environment such as chemical and gas plants, automobile industries, aeronautical establishments and leak monitoring in process industries, where the electrical or MEMS based sensors are prone to explosion and corrosion.

Locating and sizing plants for bottling propane in south India

Shri Shakti LPG Ltd. (SSLPG) imports and markets propane (referred to as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in India) in south India. It sells LPG in packed (cylinder) form to domestic customers and commercial establishments through a network of dealers. Dealers replenish their stocks of filled cylinders from bottling plants, which in turn receive LPG in bulk from the cheaper of SSLPG's two import-and-storage facilities that are located on the Indian coast. We implemented integer programming to help SSLPG decide on the locations and long-run sizes of its bottling plants. We estimate that our recommended configuration of bottling plants is about $1 million cheaper annually than the one that SSLPG had initially planned.

The Untouchable Soldier: Caste, Politics, and the Indian Army

Military establishments are omnipresent if not everywhere omnipotent. While these costly bureaucracies are the bane of finance ministers around the world, they do provide an important opportunity for comparative analysis. This paper examines a military system—the Indian one—through time, and attempts to demonstrate the changing relationship of that system to Indian politics and society in general, and to the low-caste communities of India in particular. We select the low-caste untouchables because they represent an extreme challenge to the integrative capacity of both political and social systems, and because they have recently been the subject of intensive political and academic concern.Stephen P.
