A coarse-grained stochastic hydrodynamical description of velocity and concentration fluctuations in steadily sedimenting suspensions is constructed and analyzed using self-consistent and renormalization-group methods. We find a nonequilibrium phase transition from an "unscreened" phase in which we recover the Caflisch-Luke [Phys. Fluids 28, 759 (1985)] divergence of the velocity variance to a "screened" phase where the fluctuations have a finite correlation length depending on the volume fraction phi as phi(-1/3), in agreement with Segre et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 2574 (1997)] (if their observation of a phi-independent diffusivity is used), and the velocity variance is independent of system size.

Background: The Mycobacterium leprae genome has less than 50% coding capacity and 1,133 pseudogenes. Preliminary evidence suggests that some pseudogenes are expressed. Therefore, defining pseudogene transcriptional and translational potentials of this genome should increase our understanding of their impact on M. leprae physiology. Results: Gene expression analysis identified transcripts from 49% of all M. leprae genes including 57% of all ORFs and 43% of all pseudogenes in the genome. Transcribed pseudogenes were randomly distributed throughout the chromosome. Factors resulting in pseudogene transcription included: 1) co-orientation of transcribed pseudogenes with transcribed ORFs within or exclusive of operon-like structures; 2) the paucity of intrinsic stem-loop transcriptional terminators between transcribed ORFs and downstream pseudogenes; and 3) predicted pseudogene promoters. Mechanisms for translational ``silencing'' of pseudogene transcripts included the lack of both translational start codons and strong Shine-Dalgarno (SD) sequences. Transcribed pseudogenes also contained multiple ``in-frame'' stop codons and high Ka/Ks ratios, compared to that of homologs in M. tuberculosis and ORFs in M. leprae. A pseudogene transcript containing an active promoter, strong SD site, a start codon, but containing two in frame stop codons yielded a protein product when expressed in E. coli. Conclusion: Approximately half of M. leprae's transcriptome consists of inactive gene products consuming energy and resources without potential benefit to M. leprae. Presently it is unclear what additional detrimental affect(s) this large number of inactive mRNAs has on the functional capability of this organism. Translation of these pseudogenes may play an important role in overall energy consumption and resultant pathophysiological characteristics of M. leprae. However, this study also demonstrated that multiple translational ``silencing'' mechanisms are present, reducing additional energy and resource expenditure required for protein production from the vast majority of these transcripts.

An unusual copper(II) complex [Cu(L-1a)(2)Cl-2] CH3OH center dot H2O center dot H3O+Cl- (1a) was isolated from a solution of a novel tricopper(II) complex [Cu-3(HL1)Cl-2]Cl-3 center dot 2H(2)O (1) in methanol. where L-1a is 3-(2-pyridyl)triazolo [1,5-a]-pyridine, and characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The tricopper(II) complex of potential ligand 1,5-bis(di-2-pyridyl ketone) carbohydrazone (H2L1) was synthesized and physicochemically characterized, while the formation of the complex la was followed by time-dependant monitoring of the UV-visible spectra. which reveals degradation of ligand backbone as intensity loss of bands corresponding to O -> Cu(II) charge transfer.

Infrared Earth sensors are used in spacecraft for attitude sensing. Their accuracy is limited by systematic and random errors. Dominant sources of systematic errors are analyzed for a typical scanning infrared Earth sensor used in a remote-sensing satellite in a 900-km sun-synchronous orbit. The errors considered arise from 1) seasonable variation of infrared radiation, 2) oblate shape of the Earth, 3) ambient temperature of sensors, 4) changes in spin/scan period, and 5) misalignment of the axis of the sensors. Simple relations are derived using least-squares curve fitting for onboard correction of these errors. With these, it is possible to improve the accuracy of attitude determination by eight fold and achieve performance comparable to ground-based post-facto attitude computation.
Ultrasonic measurement of the elastic constants of sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals
Resumo:
Sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate single crystals possess excellent nonlinear optical properties such that they can be used for optical second-harmonic generation. It belongs to the orthorhombic system with the space group Ima2. Slow evaporation or slow cooling techniques can be used to grow good optical quality single crystals from supersaturated solution. All the nine elastic constants of this crystal have been measured using an ultrasonic technique. Samples for measurements have been cut along desired crystallographic axes and the pulse echo overlap technique has been used to measure longitudinal and shear ultrasonic wave velocities along appropriate symmetry directions in the crystal. The McSkimin Delta t criterion has been applied to determine the round trip travel time accurately, from which the nine elastic constants have been evaluated. Temperature variation of selected elastic constants in a limited range have also been measured and reported.

Organic polymeric electro-optic (E-O) materials have attracted significant attention because of their potential use as fast and efficient components of integrated photonic devices (1,2). However, the practical application of these materials in optical devices is somewhat limited by the stringent material requirements imposed by the device design, fabrication processes and operating environments. Among the various material requirements, the most notable ones are large electro-optic coefficients (r(33)) and high thermal stability (3). The design of poled polymeric materials with high electro-optic activity (r(33)) involves the optimization of the percent incorporation of efficient (large beta mu) second order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores into the polymer matrices and the effective creation of poling-induced non-centrosymmetric structures. The factors that affect the material stability are a) the inherent thermal stability of the NLO chromophores, b) the chemical stability of the NLO chromophores during the polymer processing conditions, and c) the long-term dipolar alignment stability at high temperatures. Although considerable progress has been made in achieving these properties (4), organic polymeric materials suitable for practical E-O device applications are yet to be developed. This chapter highlights some of our approaches in the optimization of molecular and material nonlinear optical and thermal properties.

A method is described for estimating the incremental angle and angular velocity of a spacecraft using integrated rate parameters with the help of a star sensor alone. The chief advantage of this method is that the measured stars need not be identified, whereas the identification of the stars is necessary in earlier methods. This proposed estimation can be carried out with all of the available measurements by a simple linear Kalman filter, albeit with a time-varying sensitivity matrix. The residuals of estimated angular velocity by the proposed spacecraft incremental-angle and angular velocity estimation method are as accurate as the earlier methods. This method also enables the spacecraft attitude to be reconstructed for mapping the stars into an imaginary unit sphere in the body reference frame, which will preserve the true angular separation of the stars. This will pave the way for identification of the stars using any angular separation or triangle matching techniques applied to even a narrow field of view sensor that is made to sweep the sky. A numerical simulation for inertial as well as Earth pointing spacecraft is carried out to establish the results.

Polyaniline functionalized with imidazole as strategically designed receptor group in its backbone was synthesized for copper binding. The synthesized polymer has been characterized using FTIR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. The addition of copper (II) to the polymer distinctly changes the properties such as crystallinity, molecular weight, aggregation, and electronic properties. XRD, DLS, SEM, and four-point probe techniques have been used for study of these changes. It is observed that the secondary ion generated as a result of copper coordination results in the doping of the polyaniline backbone, which enhances the conductivity by one order of magnitude. Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) and carbon paste electrodes (CPE) were modified with imidazole functionalized polyaniline with the aim to develop a sensor for lead (II) in both acidic and basic aqueous solution. The electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry. The limit of detections obtained with glassy carbon electrode and carbon paste electrode are 20 ng mL(-1) and 2 ng mL(-1) of lead ion, respectively. An interference study was carried out with Cd(II), As(III), Hg(II) and Co(II) ions. Cd(II) ions interfere significantly (peak overlap) and As(III) has a depressing effect on the lead signal. The influence of pH was investigated indicating that bare and modified GCE and CPE show optimum response at pH 4.0 +/- 0.05.

High molecular weight polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized by a combined procedure incorporating various synthesis methods. Temperature and open circuit potential of the reaction mixture were collected to monitor the reaction progress. The polymer is characterized by various techniques including gel permeation chromatography, dynamic light scattering, infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning calorimetry for elucidating the molecular architecture obtained by this method. As-synthesized PANI was found to possess high molecular weight, reduced branching, reduced cross-linking, and to predominantly consist of linear polymer chains. This polymer was also found to be more stable in solution form. JV characteristics of as-synthesized PANI films indicate a high current density which is due to increased free pathways and less traps for the charge transport to occur in PANI films. POLYM. ENG. We have studied the effect of dendrimer generation on the interaction between dsDNA and the PAMAM dendrimer using force biased simulation of dsDNA with three generations of dendrimer: G3, G4, and G5. Our results for the potential of mean force (PMF) and the dendrimer asphericity along the binding pathway, combined with visualization of the simulations, demonstrate that dendrimer generation has a pronounced impact on the interaction. The PMF increases linearly with increasing generation of the dendrimer. While, in agreement with previous results, we see an increase in the extent to which the dendrimer bends the dsDNA with increasing dendrimer generation, we also see that the deformation of the dendrimer is greater with smaller generation of the dendrimer. The larger dendrimer forces the dsDNA to conform to its structure, while the smaller dendrimer is forced to conform to the structure of the dsDNA. Monitoring the number of bound cations at different values of force bias distance shows the expected effect of ions being expelled when the dendrimer binds dsDNA.

Conformational diversity or shapeshifting in cyclic peptide natural products can, in principle, confer a single molecular entity with the property of binding to multiple receptors. Conformational equilibria have been probed in the contryphans, which are peptides derived from Conus venom possessing a 23-membered cyclic disulfide moiety. The natural sequences derived from Conus inscriptus, GCV(D)LYPWC* (In936) and Conus loroisii, GCP(D)WDPWC* (Lo959) differ in the number of proline residues within the macrocyclic ring. Structural characterisation of distinct conformational states arising from cis-trans equilibria about Xxx-Pro bonds is reported. Isomerisation about the C2-P3 bond is observed in the case of Lo959 and about the Y5-P6 bond in In936. Evidence is presented for as many as four distinct species in the case of the synthetic analogue V3P In936. The Tyr-Pro-Trp segment in In936 is characterised by distinct sidechain orientations as a consequence of aromatic/proline interactions as evidenced by specific sidechain-sidechain nuclear Overhauser effects and ring current shifted proton chemical shifts. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that Tyr5 and Trp7 sidechain conformations are correlated and depend on the geometry of the Xxx-Pro bond. Thermodynamic parameters are derived for the cis trans equilibrium for In936. Studies on synthetic analogues provide insights into the role of sequence effects in modulating isomerisation about Xxx-Pro bonds.

An improved photocatalyst consisting of a nanocomposite of exfoliated graphite and titanium dioxide (EG-TiO2) was prepared. SEM and TEM micrographs showed that the spherical TiO2 nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of the EG sheets. A four times photocatalytic enhancement was observed for this floating nanocomposite compared to TiO2 and EG alone for the degradation of eosin yellow. For all the materials, the reactions followed first order kinetics where for EG-TiO2, the rate constant was much higher than for EG and TiO2 under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of EG-TiO2 was ascribed to the capability of graphitic layers to accept and transport electrons from the excited TiO2, promoting charge separation. This indicates that carbon, a cheap and abundant material, can be a good candidate as an electron attracting reservoir for photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. An electrochemical lead ion sensor has been developed by modification of carbon paste electrode (CPE) using polypyrrole functionalized with iminodiacetic acid (IDA-PPy) containing carboxyl group. The electrochemical response of Pb2+ ion on the IDA-PPy modified CPE has been evaluated and the controling parameters have been optimized using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The IDA-PPy modified CPE shows a linear correlation for Pb2+ concentrations in the range of 1 x 10(-6) to 5 x 10(-9) M and the lower detection limit of Pb2+ has been found to be 9.6 x 10(-9) M concentration. Other tested metal ions, namely Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+, do not exhibit any voltammetric stripping response below 1 x 10(-7) M concentration. However, the Pb2+ response is affected in the presence of molar equivalents or higher concentrations of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Co2+ ions in binary systems with Pb2+, consequent to their ability to bind with iminodiacetic acid, while Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ do not interfere at all. A good correlation has been observed between the lead concentrations as analyzed by DPASV using IDA-PPy modified CPE and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for a lead containing industrial effluent sample. In view of the increasing usage of anatase and rutile crystalline phases of titania NPs in the consumer products, their entry into the aquatic environment may pose a serious risk to the ecosystem. In the present study, the possible toxic impact of anatase and rutile nanoparticles (individually and in binary mixture) was investigated using freshwater microalgae, Chlorella sp. at low exposure concentrations (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/L) in freshwater medium under UV irradiation. Reduction of cell viability as well as a reduction in chlorophyll content were observed due to the presence of NPs. An antagonistic effect was noted at certain concentrations of binary mixture such as (0.25, 0.25), (0.25, 0.5), and (0.5, 0.5) mg/L, and an additive effect for the other combinations, (0.25, 1), (0.5, 0.25), (0.5, 1), (1, 0.25), (1, 0.5), and (1, 1) mg/L. The hydrodynamic size analyses in the test medium revealed that rutile NPs were more stable in lake water than the anatase and binary mixtures at 6 h, the sizes of anatase (1 mg/L), rutile NPs (1 mg/L), and binary mixture (1, 1 mg/L) were 948.83 +/- 35.01 nm, 555.74 +/- 19.93 nm, and 1620.24 +/- 237.87 nm, respectively]. The generation of oxidative stress was found to be strongly dependent on the crystallinity of the nanoparticles. The transmission electron microscopic images revealed damages in the nucleus and cell membrane of algal cells due to the interaction of anatase NPs, whereas rutile NPs were found to cause chloroplast and internal organelle damages. Mis-shaped chloroplasts, lack of nucleus, and starch-pyrenoid complex were noted in binary-treated cells. The findings from the current study may facilitate the environmental risk assessment of titania NPs in an aquatic ecosystem. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
