The recA locus of pathogenic mycobacteria differs from that of nonpathogenic species because it contains large intervening sequences nested in the RecA homology region that are excised by an unusual protein-splicing reaction. In vivo assays indicated that Mycobacterium tuberculosis recA partially complemented Escherichia coli recA mutants for recombination and mutagenesis. Further, splicing of the 85 kDa precursor to 38 kDa MtRecA protein was necessary for the display of its activity, in vivo. To gain insights into the molecular basis for partial and lack of complementation by MtRecA and 85 kDa proteins, respectively, we purified both of them to homogeneity. MtRecA protein, but not the 85 kDa form, bound stoichiometrically to single-stranded DNA in the presence of ATP. MtRecA protein was cross-linked to 8-azidoadenosine 5'-triphosphate with reduced efficiency, and kinetic analysis of ATPase activity suggested that it is due to decreased affinity for ATP. In contrast, the 85 kDa form was unable to bind ATP, in the presence or absence of ssDNA and, consequently, was entirely devoid of ATPase activity. Molecular modeling studies suggested that the decreased affinity of MtRecA protein for ATP and the reduced efficiency of its hydrolysis might be due to the widening of the cleft which alters the hydrogen bonds and the contact area between the enzyme and the substrate and changes in the disposition of the amino acid residues around the magnesium ion and the gamma-phosphate. The formation of joint molecules promoted by MtRecA protein was stimulated by SSB when the former was added first. The probability of an association between the lack and partial levels of biological activity of RecA protein(s) to that of illegitimate recombination in pathogenic mycobacteria is considered.

There are conflicting reports in the literature regarding solid solubility in the system RuO2-TiO2. To resolve this issue a few experiments were conducted in air at 1673, 1723, and 1773 K. The results show limited terminal solid solubility. There is an extended solid-state miscibility gap that intersects the decomposition curve for the RuO2-rich solid solution generating a peritectoid reaction at 1698 K. The measured equilibrium compositions of the solid solutions are used to develop a thermodynamic description of the oxide solid solution with rutile structure. Using the subregular solution model, the enthalpy of mixing can be represented by the expression, Delta H-M/J center dot mol(-1) = XTiO2XRuO2 ( 34,100X(TiO2) + 30,750X(RuO2)). The binodal and spinodal curves and T-X phase diagram in air are computed using this datum and Gibbs energy of formation of RuO2 available in the literature. The computed results suggest that equilibrium was not attained during solubility measurements at lower temperatures reported in the literature.

Bubble formation from single horizontal orifices submerged in Newtonian liquids has been investigated for such chamber volumes that both the pressure inside the chamber and flow rate into the bubble are time dependent. The data collected show that under these conditions the bubble volume decreases exponentially with increase in orifice submergence. The equations for the generalized two stage model of bubble formation, taking the variation of gas flow rate with time into account, have been derived. These equations reduce to the cases of constant gas flow rate and constant pressure when adequate constraints are imposed. The results obtained under intermediate conditions have been quantitatively explained on the basis of these equations.

The system 3-methylpyridine(3MP)+water(H2O)+NaBr has been the subject of an intense scientific debate since the work of Jacob [Phys. Rev. E. 58, 2188 (1988)] and Anisimov [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2336 (2000)]. The crossover critical behavior of this system seemed to show remarkable sensitivity to the weight fraction (X) of the ionic impurity NaBr. In the range X <= 0.10 the system displayed Ising behavior and a pronounced crossover to mean-field behavior in the range 0.10 <= X <= 0.16. A complete mean-field behavior was observed at X=0.17, a result that was later attributed to the existence of long-living nonequilibrium states in this system [Kostko , Phys. Rev. E. 70, 026118 (2004)]. In this paper, we report the near-critical behavior of osmotic susceptibility in the isotopically related ternary system, 3MP+heavy water(D2O)+NaBr. Detailed light-scattering experiments performed at exactly the same NaBr concentrations as investigated by Jacob reveal that the system 3MP+D2O+NaBr shows a simple Ising-type critical behavior with gamma similar or equal to 1.24 and nu similar or equal to 0.63 over the entire NaBr concentration range 0 <= X <= 0.1900. The crossover behavior is predominantly nonmonotonic and is completed well outside the critical domain. An analysis in terms of the effective susceptibility exponent (gamma(eff)) reveals that the crossover behavior is nonmonotonic for 0 <= X <= 0.1793 and tends to become monotonic for X > 0.1793. The correlation length amplitude xi(o), has a value of similar or equal to 2 A for 0.0250 <= X <= 0.1900, whereas for X=0, xi(o)similar or equal to 3.179 A. Since isotopic H -> D substitution is not expected to change the critical behavior of the system, our results support the recent results obtained by Kostko [Phys. Rev. E. 70, 026118 (2004)] that 3MP+H2O+NaBr exhibits universal Ising-type critical behavior typical for other aqueous solutions.

The unsteady laminar boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting fluid past a semi-infinite flat plate with an aligned magnetic field has been studied when at time t > 0 the plate is impulsively moved with a constant velocity which is in the same or opposite direction to that of free stream velocity. The effect of the induced magnetic field has been included in the analysis. The non-linear partial differential equations have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference method. The effect of the impulsive motion of the surface is found to be more pronounced on the skin friction but its effect on the x-component of the induced magnetic field and heat transfer is small. Velocity defect occurs near the surface when the plate is impulsively moved in the same direction as that of the free stream velocity. The surface shear stress, x-component of the induced magnetic field on the surface and the surface heat transfer decrease with an increasing magnetic field, but they increase with the reciprocal of the magnetic Prandtl number. However, the effect of the reciprocal of the magnetic Prandtl number is more pronounced on the x-component of the induced magnetic field. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Constant stress compression creep experiments were carried out on high purity alumina composites with spinel contents of 8 and 30%, corresponding to a situation with isolated and interconnected second phases. The creep experiments were conducted over a stress and temperature range of 10 to 150 MPa and 1623 to 1723 K, respectively. Analysis of the experimental data indicated that the variation in spinel content did not have any influence on high temperature deformation in the composite. The spinel phase retards grain growth, and this may enhance superplasticity in alumina-spinel composites.

Lime-fly ash mixtures are exploited for the manufacture of fly ash bricks finding applications in load bearing masonry. Lime-pozzolana reactions take place at a slow pace under ambient temperature conditions and hence very long curing durations are required to achieve meaningful strength values. The present investigation examines the improvements in strength development in lime-fly ash compacts through low temperature steam curing and use of additives like gypsum. Results of density-strength-moulding water content relationships, influence of lime-fly ash ratio, steam curing and role of gypsum on strength development, and characteristics of compacted lime-fly ash-gypsum bricks have been discussed. The test results reveal that (a) strength increases with increase in density irrespective of lime content, type of curing and moulding water content, (b) optimum lime-fly ash ratio yielding maximum strength is about 0.75 in the normal curing conditions, (c) 24 h of steam curing (at 80A degrees C) is sufficient to achieve nearly possible maximum strength, (d) optimum gypsum content yielding maximum compressive strength is at 2%, (e) with gypsum additive it is possible to obtain lime-fly ash bricks or blocks having sufficient strength (> 10 MPa) at 28 days of normal wet burlap curing.

In the present investigation, various kinds of textures, namely, unidirectional, 8-ground, and random were attained on the die surfaces. Roughness of the textures was varied using different grits of emery papers or polishing powders. Then pins made of Al-4Mg alloys were slid against steel plates at various numbers of cycles, namely, 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 using pin-on-plate reciprocating sliding tester. Tests were conducted at a sliding velocity of 2 minis in ambient conditions under both dry and lubricated conditions. A constant normal load of 35 N was applied in the tests. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of transfer layer on the counter surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Surface roughness parameters of the plates were measured using an optical profilometer. In the experiments, it was observed that the coefficient of friction and formation of the transfer layer depend on the die surface textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. More specifically, the coefficient of friction decreases for unidirectional and 8-ground surfaces while for random surfaces it increases with number of cycles. However, the coefficient of friction is highest for the sliding perpendicular to the unidirectional textures and least for the random textures under both dry and lubricated conditions. The difference in friction values between these two surfaces decreases with increasing number of cycles. The variation in the coefficient of friction under both dry and lubrication conditions is attributed to the change in texture of the surfaces during sliding. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Energy use in developing countries is heterogeneous across households. Present day global energy models are mostly too aggregate to account for this heterogeneity. Here, a bottom-up model for residential energy use that starts from key dynamic concepts on energy use in developing countries is presented and applied to India. Energy use and fuel choice is determined for five end-use functions (cooking, water heating, space heating, lighting and appliances) and for five different income quintiles in rural and urban areas. The paper specifically explores the consequences of different assumptions for income distribution and rural electrification on residential sector energy use and CO(2) emissions, finding that results are clearly sensitive to variations in these parameters. As a result of population and economic growth, total Indian residential energy use is expected to increase by around 65-75% in 2050 compared to 2005, but residential carbon emissions may increase by up to 9-10 times the 2005 level. While a more equal income distribution and rural electrification enhance the transition to commercial fuels and reduce poverty, there is a trade-off in terms of higher CO(2) emissions via increased electricity use. Sensory receptors determine the type and the quantity of information available for perception. Here, we quantified and characterized the information transferred by primary afferents in the rat whisker system using neural system identification. Quantification of ``how much'' information is conveyed by primary afferents, using the direct method (DM), a classical information theoretic tool, revealed that primary afferents transfer huge amounts of information (up to 529 bits/s). Information theoretic analysis of instantaneous spike-triggered kinematic stimulus features was used to gain functional insight on ``what'' is coded by primary afferents. Amongst the kinematic variables tested-position, velocity, and acceleration-primary afferent spikes encoded velocity best. The other two variables contributed to information transfer, but only if combined with velocity. We further revealed three additional characteristics that play a role in information transfer by primary afferents. Firstly, primary afferent spikes show preference for well separated multiple stimuli (i.e., well separated sets of combinations of the three instantaneous kinematic variables). Secondly, neurons are sensitive to short strips of the stimulus trajectory (up to 10 ms pre-spike time), and thirdly, they show spike patterns (precise doublet and triplet spiking). In order to deal with these complexities, we used a flexible probabilistic neuron model fitting mixtures of Gaussians to the spike triggered stimulus distributions, which quantitatively captured the contribution of the mentioned features and allowed us to achieve a full functional analysis of the total information rate indicated by the DM. We found that instantaneous position, velocity, and acceleration explained about 50% of the total information rate. Adding a 10 ms pre-spike interval of stimulus trajectory achieved 80-90%. The final 10-20% were found to be due to non-linear coding by spike bursts.

For a domain Omega in C and an operator T in B-n(Omega), Cowen and Douglas construct a Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle E-T over Omega corresponding to T. The Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle E-T is obtained as a pull-back of the tautological bundle S(n, H) defined over by Gr(n, H) a nondegenerate holomorphic map z bar right arrow ker(T - z), z is an element of Omega. To find the answer to the converse, Cowen and Douglas studied the jet bundle in their foundational paper. The computations in this paper for the curvature of the jet bundle are rather intricate. They have given a set of invariants to determine if two rank n Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle are equivalent. These invariants are complicated and not easy to compute. It is natural to expect that the equivalence of Hermitian holomorphic jet bundles should be easier to characterize. In fact, in the case of the Hermitian holomorphic jet bundle J(k)(L-f), we have shown that the curvature of the line bundle L-f completely determines the class of J(k)(L-f). In case of rank Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle E-f, We have calculated the curvature of jet bundle J(k)(E-f) and also obtained a trace formula for jet bundle J(k)(E-f).

Lightning strike to instrumented and communication towers can be a source of electromagnetic disturbance to the system connected. Long cables running on these towers can get significant induction to their sheath/core, which would then couple to the connected equipments. For a quantitative analysis of the situation, suitable theoretical analysis is necessary. Due to the dominance of the transverse magnetic mode during the fast rising portion of the stroke current, which is the period of significant induction, a full wave solution based on Maxwell's equations is necessary. Owing to the large geometric aspect ratio of tower lattice elements and for feasibility of a numerical solution, the thin-wire formulation for the electric field integral equation is generally adopted. However, the classical thin-wire formulation is not set for handling non-cylindrical conductors like tower lattice elements and the proximity of other conductors. The present work investigates further into a recently proposed method for handling such a situation and optimizes the numerical solution approach.

This study reports a multinuclei in situ (real-time) NMR spectroscopic characterization of the electrochemical reactions of a negative Cu3P electrode toward lithium. Taking advantage of the different nuclear spin characteristics, we have obtained real-time P-31 and Li-7 NMR data for a comprehensive understanding of the electrochemical mechanism during the discharge and charge processes of a lithium battery. The large NMR chemical shift span of P-31 facilitates the observation of the chemical evolutions of different lithiated and delithiated LixCu3-xP phases, whereas the quadrupolar line features in Li-7 enable identification of asymmetric Li sites. These combined NMR data offer an unambiguous identification of four distinct LixCu3-xP phases, Cu3P, Li0.2Cu2.8P, Li2CuP, and. Li3P, and the characterization of their involvement in the electrochemical reactions. The NMR data led us to propose a delithiation process involving the intercalation of metallic Cu-0 atomic aggregates into the Li2CuP structure to form a Cu-0-Li2-xCu1-xP phase. This process might be responsible for the poor capacity retention in Cu3P lithium batteries when cycled to a low voltage.
