The Gibbs energy of formation of titania-saturated lead titanate has been determined by e.m.f. measurements on the solid state cell;Pt,Ir,Pb + Pb1−xTiO3−x + TiO2(rutile)/CaO-ZrO2/Ni + NiO,Pt in the temperature range 1075–1350 K. The results obtained are significantly different from those reported in the literature based upon vapour pressure measurements, employing Knudsen effusion and transportation techniques, and assuming that the vapor phase consisted entirely of monomeric PbO molecules. A reanalysis of the data obtained in the earlier vapor pressure studies using mass spectrometric measurements on polymeric PbO species in the gas phase, gives Gibbs energies of formation of lead titanate which are in better agreement with those obtained in this study. Earlier electrochemical measurements by Mehrotra et al. and more recent electrochemical measurements by Schmahl et al. both employing CaO-ZrO2 solid electrolytes are in good agreement with the present study. The electro-chemical measurements by Schmahl et al. using PbF 2 solid electrolyte give a slightly more positive Gibbs energy of formation.

Eulytite compounds, A(3)Bi(XO4)(3) (X = P, A = Ca, Cd, Sr, Pb), belong to the noncentrosymmetric space group l (4) over bar 3d (No. 220) as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The crystals were grown from the melt-cool technique with considerable difficulty as the compounds melt incongruently at their melting temperature, except for the compound Pb3Bi(PO4)(3). The unit cell parameter a is 9.984(5), 9.8611(3), 10.2035(3), and 10.3722(2) angstrom for Ca3Bi(PO4)(3), Cd3Bi(PO4)(3), Sr3Bi(PO4)(3), and Pb3Bi(PO4)(3) respectively, and there are four formula units in the unit cell. The structure of Pb3Bi(VO4)(3), a unique eulytite with vanadium substitution, is compared with all these phosphorus substituted eulytites. The A(2+) and Bi3+ cations occupy the special position (16c) while the O anions occupy the general Wyckoff position (48e) in the crystal structure. Only one O position has been identified for Pb3Bi(PO4)(3) and Pb3Bi(VO4)(3), whereas two O atom sites were identified for Ca3Bi(PO4)(3), Cd3Bi(PO4)(3), and Sr3Bi(PO4)(3). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicate large band gaps for all the phosphate eulytites while a lower band gap is observed for the vanadate eulytite. The feasibility of the use of these compounds in optoelectronic devices has been tested by measuring the second-harmonic generation (SHG) values which have been found to be of a magnitude equivalent to the commercially used KDP (KH2PO4).

We investigate the electronic structure of Ca1-xSrxVO3 using photoemission spectroscopy. Core level spectra establish an electronic phase separation at the surface, leading to a distinctly different surface electronic structure compared to the bulk. Analysis of the photoemission spectra of this system allowed us to separate the surface and bulk contributions. These results help us to understand properties related to two vastly differing energy scales, namely the low-energy scale of thermal excitations ( $\sim\!k_{\rm B}T$) and the high-energy scale related to Coulomb and other electronic interactions.

Nanoparticles (dia ~ 5 - 7 nm) of Bi0.5X0.5(X=Ca,Sr)MnO3 are prepared by polymer assisted sol-gel method and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques. X-ray diffraction gives evidence for single phasic nature of the materials as well as their structures. Mono dispersed to a large extent, isolated nanoparticles are seen in the transmission electron micrographs. High resolution electron microscopy shows the crystalline nature of the nanoparticles. Superconducting quantum interferometer based magnetic measurements from 10K to 300K show that these nanomanganites retain the charge ordering nature unlike Pr and Nd based nanomanganites. The CO in Bi based manganites is thus found to be very robust consistent with the observation that magnetic field of the order of 130 T are necessary to melt the CO in these compounds. These results are supported by electron magnetic resonance measurements.

We have employed the highly sensitive electron magnetic resonance technique complimented by magnetization measurements to study the impact of size reduction on the magnetic ordering in nanosized Sm1-x Ca (x) MnO3 (x = 0.35, 0.65 and 0.92). In the bulk form, x = 0.35 sample shows a charge ordering transition at 235 K followed by a mixed magnetic phase, the sample with x = 0.65 exhibits charge order below 275 K and shows an antiferromagnetic insulator phase below 135 K while that with x = 0.92 has a ferromagnetic-cluster glass ground state. Thus, a comparative study of magnetic ground states of bulk and nanoparticles (diameter similar to 25 nm) enables us to investigate size-induced effects on different types of magnetic ordering. It is seen that in the bulk samples the temperature dependences of the EPR parameters are quite different from each other. This difference diminishes for the nanosamples where all the three samples show qualitatively similar behavior. The magnetization measurements corroborate this conclusion.

The effect of nonmagnetic Ti4+ substitution for Mn4+ on magnetic ordering of La1-xPbxMn1-yTiyO3 (x = 0.15,0.26, and 0.4; 0 less than or equal to y less than or equal to x )has been studied. The ferromagnetic transition temperature and the magnetization decrease with increasing amount of titanium. Complete substitution of Mn4+ by Ti4+, for x = y, excludes the Mn3+-O-Mn4+ double exchange. However, these compounds still show ferromagnetism if the dilution of the Mn sublattice by Ti is small enough (y less than or equal to 0.2). This ferromagnetism probably originates from a ferromagnetic Mn3+-O-Mn3+ superexchange. A thorough study of magnetic properties including AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, temperature dependence of coercivity and relaxation of remanent magnetization has been carried out and gives evidence of cluster spin glass behaviour for La0.6Pb0.4Mn0.6Ti0.4O3. The structures of [Nd-2(Acc(6))(H2O)(6)](ClO4)(6) .(H2O)(6) (1) [Er-2(Acc(6))(4)(H2O)(8)](ClO4)(6) .(H2O)(11) (2) and [Ca-5(Acc(6))(12)(H2O)(6)](ClO4)(10).(H2O)(4) (3) (Acc(6) = 1-aminocyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The lanthanide complexes 1 and 2 are dimeric in which two lanthanide cations are bridged by four carboxylato groups of Acc(6) molecules. In addition, the neodymium complex (1) features the unidentate coordination of the carboxyl group of an Acc(6) molecule in place of a water molecule in the erbium complex (2). The coordination number in both 1 and 2 is eight. The calcium Acc(6) complex (3) is polymeric; three different calcium environments are observed in the asymmetric unit. Two calcium ions are hexa-coordinated and one is hepta-coordinated. Considerable differences are observed between the solid state structures of Ln(III) and Ca-II complexes of Acc(6

Layered perovskite oxides of the formula ACa~,La,Nb3-,Ti,010 (A = K, Rb, Cs and 0 < x d 2) have been prepared. The members adopt the structures of the parent ACazNb3010. Interlayer alkali cations in the niobium-titanium oxide series can be ion-exchanged with Li+, Na+, NH4+, or H+ to give new derivatives. Intercalation of the protonated derivatives with organic bases reveals that the Bronsted acidity of the solid solution series, HC~ ~ , L ~ ,N~ ~ , T ~ ,dOep~eOnd, s on the titanium content. While the x = 1 member (HCaLaNbzTiOlo) is nearly as acidic as the parent HCazNb3010, the x = 2 member (HLazNbTizOlo) is a weak acid hardly intercalating organic bases with pKa - 11.3. The variation of acidity is probably due to an ordering of Nb/Ti atoms in the triple octahedral perovskite slabs, [Ca~,La,Nb~,Ti,0~0], such that protons are attached to NbO6 octahedra in the x = 1 member and to Ti06 octahedra in the x = 2 member.

Following considerations of geometry and the similarity between chromate and carbonate groups in terms of size and charge, we have investigated the possibility of replacing the two-coordinate Cu-I in superconducting lead cuprates of the general formula Pb2Sr2(Ca, Y)CU3O8 by Cr. A high-resolution electron microscopy study coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis on small crystals of the title phases suggests that between 10 and 15% of the Cu-I can be replaced by Cr. While from the present structural study using HRTEM and Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder data we are unable to precisely obtain the oxidation state and oxygen coordination of Cr, we suggest in analogy with Cr substitution in other similar cuprates that in the title phases (CuO2)-O-I rods are partially replaced by tetrahedral CrO42- groups. Infrared spectroscopy supports the presence of CrO42- groups. The phases Pb1.75Sr2Ca0.2Y0.8O8+delta and Pb1.75Sr2Ca0.2Y0.8CCu2.85Cr0.15O8+delta are superconducting as-prepared, but the substitution of Cr for Cu-I results in a decrease of the Te as well as the superconducting volume fraction. It is pointed out that the change in the oxidation state of Cu in YBa2CU3O7-x with increasing x vitiates the trend in the Cu(2p) satellite intensity and hence the Cu-O charge-transfer energy. When Y is partly replaced by Ca, however, the satellite intensity and T(c) decrease with the increase in Ca content or hole concentration, just as in other cuprates.

A galactose-specific seed lectin from Spatholobous parviflorus (SPL) has been purified, crystallized and its X-ray structure solved. It is the first lectin purified and crystallized from the genus Spatholobus (family: Fabaceae). The crystals belong to the space group P1, with a = 60.792 angstrom, b = 60.998 angstrom, c = 78.179 angstrom, alpha = 78.68 degrees, beta = 88.62 degrees, gamma = 104.32 degrees. The data were collected at 2.04 angstrom resolution under cryocondition, on a MAR image-plate detector system, mounted on a rotating anode X-ray generator. The coordinates of Dolichos biflorus lectin (1lu1) were successfully used for the structure solution by molecular replacement method. The primary structure of the SPL was not known earlier and it was unambiguously visible in the electron density. S. parviflorus lectin is a hetero-dimeric-tetramer with two alpha and two beta chains of 251 and 239 residues respectively. SPL has two metal ions, Ca(2+) and Mn(2+), bound to a loop region of each chain. The SPL monomers are in jelly roll form. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. Phase-singular solids of the composition, (Mg1−(x+y) Cax Lay)(Ti1−yAly)O3 (x = 0 to 0.88; y = 0.05 to 0.35) having the cubic perovskite-type structure were prepared by the substitution of La3+ and Al3+ in equivalent quantities which brought about complete miscibility between MgTiO3 and CaTiO3. These ceramics showed relative permittivities of 16.5 to 50 (at 6 GHz) with increasing Ca content, high Q values of 10 000 to 30 000 and retained near-zero temperature coefficients in permittivity at optimum y values. Their dielectric characteristics are better accountable in terms of the positional disorder rather than the tolerance factor of perovskite structure.

We consider bounds for the capacity region of the Gaussian X channel (XC), a system consisting of two transmit-receive pairs, where each transmitter communicates with both the receivers. We first classify the XC into two classes, the strong XC and the mixed XC. In the strong XC, either the direct channels are stronger than the cross channels or vice-versa, whereas in the mixed XC, one of the direct channels is stronger than the corresponding cross channel and vice-versa. After this classification, we give outer bounds on the capacity region for each of the two classes. This is based on the idea that when one of the messages is eliminated from the XC, the rate region of the remaining three messages are enlarged. We make use of the Z channel, a system obtained by eliminating one message and its corresponding channel from the X channel, to bound the rate region of the remaining messages. The outer bound to the rate region of the remaining messages defines a subspace in R-+(4) and forms an outer bound to the capacity region of the XC. Thus, the outer bound to the capacity region of the XC is obtained as the intersection of the outer bounds to the four combinations of the rate triplets of the XC. Using these outer bounds on the capacity region of the XC, we derive new sum-rate outer bounds for both strong and mixed Gaussian XCs and compare them with those existing in literature. We show that the sum-rate outer bound for strong XC gives the sum-rate capacity in three out of the four sub-regions of the strong Gaussian XC capacity region. In case of mixed Gaussian XC, we recover the recent results in 11] which showed that the sum-rate capacity is achieved in two out of the three sub-regions of the mixed XC capacity region and give a simple alternate proof of the same.

We here report what we believe to be an important method for studying hydrogen bonding in systems containing a paramagnetic centre. The technique of electron-nuclear double resonance ( ENDOR) has been applied to study the hydrogen-bond network around the AsO44-. centre in X-ray irradiated KH2AsO4. ENDOR transitions from several sets of hydrogen nuclei surrounding the centre were observed at 4.2 degrees K and the spectra for two sets of neighbouring nuclei are identified. The angular dependences for these spectra are fitted with a spin-Hamiltonian to obtain the isotropic and anisotropic magnetic hyperfine constants. The results are discussed in terms of the available spectroscopic and crystallographic data on KH2AsO4 and the order-disorder model of ferroelectrictricity in this class of crystals.
