THE addition of catalysts normally serves the purpose of imparting a desired burning rate change in a composite propellant. These may either retard or enhance the burning rate. Some often quoted catalysts are oxides, chromites and chromates of metals. A lot of work has been done on rinding the effect of the addition of some of these catalysts on the burning rate; however, none seems to have appeared on the influence of lithium fluoride (LiF). Only qualitative reduction in the burning rate of composite propellants with the addition of LiF was reported by Williams et al.1 Dickinson and Jackson2 reported a slight decrease in the specific impulse of composite propellant with the addition of LiF; however, they made no mention of the effect of its addition on the burning rate. We have studied the effect of the addition of varying amounts of LiF on the burning rate of Ammonium Perchlorate (AP)-Polyester propellant.

Castor oil-based poly(mannitol-citric sebacate) was synthesized by simple, catalyst-free melt condensation process using monomers having potential to be metabolized in vivo. The polymer was characterized using various techniques and the tensile and hydration properties of the polymers were also determined. The biocompatibility of the polymer was tested using human foreskin fibroblasts cells. The in vitro degradation studies show that the time for complete degradation of the polymer was more than 21 days. The usage of castor oil polyester as a drug carrier was analysed by doping the polymer with 5-fluorouracil model drug and the release rate was studied by varying the percentage loading of drugs and the pH of the PBS solution medium. The cumulative drug-release profiles exhibited a biphasic release with an initial burst release and cumulative 100% release within 42 h. To understand the role of the polymer as a drug carrier in the release behaviour, drug-release studies were conducted with another drug, isoniazid. The release behaviour of isoniazid drug from the same polymer matrix followed an nth order kinetic model and 100% cumulative release was achieved after 12 days. The variation in the release behaviour for two model drugs from the same polymer matrix suggests a strong interaction between the polymer and the drug molecule.

Self-condensation of AB(2) type monomers (containing one A-type and two B-type functional groups) generates hyperbranched (HB) polymers that carry numerous B-type end-groups at their molecular periphery; thus, development of synthetic methods that directly provide quantitatively transformable peripheral B groups would be of immense value as this would provide easy access to multiply functionalized HB systems. A readily accessible AB(2) monomer, namely diallyl, 5-(4-hydroxybutoxy)isophthalate was synthesized, which on polymerization under standard melt-transesterfication conditions yielded a peripherally clickable HB polyester in a single step; the allyl groups were quantitatively reacted with a variety of thiols using the facile photoinitiated thiol-ene reaction to generate a wide range of derivatives, with varying solubility and thermal properties. Furthermore, it is shown that the peripheral allyl double bonds can also be readily epoxidized using meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid to yield interesting HB systems, which could potentially serve as a multifunctional cross-linking agent in epoxy formulations. Despite advances in regenerative medicine, the cost of such therapies is beyond the reach of many patients globally in part due to the use of expensive biomedical polymers. Large volumes of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in municipal waste is a potential source of low cost polymers. A novel polyester was prepared by a catalyst-free, melt polycondensation reaction of bis(hydroxyethylene) terephthalate derived from PET post-consumer waste with other multi-functional monomers from renewable sources such as citric acid, sebacic acid and D-mannitol. The mechanical properties and degradation rate of the polyester can be tuned by varying the composition and the post-polymerization time. The polyester was found to be elastomeric, showed excellent cytocompatibility in vitro and elicited minimal immune response in vivo. Three-dimensional porous scaffolds facilitated osteogenic differentiation and mineralization. This class of polyester derived from low cost, recycled waste and renewable sources is a promising candidate for use in regenerative medicine.

There has been a continuous surge toward developing new biopolymers that exhibit better in vivo biocompatibility properties in terms of demonstrating a reduced foreign body response (FBR). One approach to mitigate the undesired FBR is to develop an implant capable of releasing anti-inflammatory molecules in a sustained manner over a long time period. Implants causing inflammation are also more susceptible to infection. In this article, the in vivo biocompatibility of a novel, biodegradable salicylic acid releasing polyester (SAP) has been investigated by subcutaneous implantation in a mouse model. The tissue response to SAP was compared with that of a widely used biodegradable polymer, poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), as a control over three time points: 2, 4, and 16 weeks postimplantation. A long-term in vitro study illustrates a continuous, linear (zero order) release of salicylic acid with a cumulative mass percent release rate of 7.34 x 10(-4) h(-1) over similar to 1.5-17 months. On the basis of physicochemical analysis, surface erosion for SAP and bulk erosion for PLGA have been confirmed as their dominant degradation modes in vivo. On the basis of the histomorphometrical analysis of inflammatory cell densities and collagen distribution as well as quantification of proinflammatory cytokine levels (TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta), a reduced foreign body response toward SAP with respect to that generated by PLGA has been unambiguously established. The favorable in vivo tissue response to SAP, as manifest from the uniform and well-vascularized encapsulation around the implant, is consistent with the decrease in inflammatory cell density and increase in angiogenesis with time. The above observations, together with the demonstration of long-term and sustained release of salicylic acid, establish the potential use of SAP for applications in improved matrices for tissue engineering and chronic wound healing.

A constant volume window bomb has been used to measure the characteristic velocity (c*) of rocket propellants. Analysis of the combustion process inside the bomb including heat losses has been made. The experiments on double base and composite propellants have revealed some (i) basic heat transfer aspects inside the bomb and (ii) combustion characteristics of Ammonium Perchlorate-Polyester propellants. It has been found that combustion continues even beyond the peak pressure and temperature points. Lithium Fluoride mixed propellants do not seem to indicate significant differences in c*) though the low pressure deflagration limit is increased with percentage of Lithium Fluoride.

This paper presents results of triaxial compression tests on sand reinforced with different types of geosynthetics in different layer configurations to study the effect of quantity of reinforcement and tensile strength of the geosynthetic material on the mechanical behavior of geosynthetic-reinforced sand. The reinforcement types used are woven geotextile, geogrid, and polyester film. The layer configurations used are two, three, four, and eight horizontal reinforcing layers in a triaxial test sample. From the triaxial tests, it is found that the geosynthetic reinforcement imparts cohesive strength to otherwise cohesionless sand. The effect of reinforcement on the friction angle was found to be insignificant. The magnitude of imparted apparent cohesion is found to depend not only on the tensile strength of the geosynthetic material but also the surface roughness changes during loading. Special triaxial tests using rice flour as the reinforced medium, microscopic images, and surface roughness studies revealed the effect of indent formation on the surface of polyester film, which was the reason for the unusually high strength exhibited by the sand reinforced with polyester film.

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of an organic azide and an acetylenic unit, often referred to as the ``click reaction'', has become an important ligation tool both in the context of materials chemistry and biology. Thus, development of simple approaches to directly generate polymers that bear either an azide or an alkyne unit has gained considerable importance. We describe here a straightforward approach to directly prepare linear and hyperbranched polyesters that carry terminal propargyl groups. To achieve the former, we designed an AB-type monomer that carries a hydroxyl group and a propargyl ester, which upon self-condensation under standard transesterification conditions yielded a polyester that carries a single propargyl group at one of its chain-ends. Similarly, an AB(2) type monomer that carries one hydroxyl group and two propargyl ester groups, when polymerized under the same conditions yielded a hyperbranched polymer with numerous clickable'' propargyl groups at its molecular periphery. These propargyl groups can be readily clicked with different organic azides, such as benzyl azide, omega-azido heptaethyleneglycol monomethylether or 9-azidomethyl anthracene. When an anthracene chromophore is clicked, the molecular weight of the linear polyester could be readily estimated using both UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. Furthermore, the reactive propargyl end group could also provide an opportunity to prepare block copolymers in the case of linear polyesters and to generate nanodimensional scaffolds to anchor variety of functional units, in the case of the hyperbranched polymer. Moisture absorption characteristics and its effects on the mechanical properties and failure process of polymers (neat epoxy and polyester resins) and composites with simple (glass, carbon and kevlar) and hybrid (glass-carbon, carbon-kevlar and kevlar-glass) fibres were experimentally determined before and after immersion in water at 343 K for 20 days. The maximum moisture content (Mm) and diffusion coefficient (Dx) of these composites were determined. The degradation in ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus due to the moisture content were experimentally determined and found to be quite significant. Acoustic emissions, from specimens before and after exposure, were monitored during the load cycle, and revealed a significant change in the failure process of these composites. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) studies on failed exposed and unexposed specimens revealed resin leach out and fibre prominence.

We study the elasticity, topological defects, and hydrodynamics of the recently discovered incommensurate smectic (AIC) phase, characterized by two collinear mass density waves of incommensurate spatial frequency. The low-energy long-wavelength excitations of the system can be described by a displacement field u(x) and a phason field w(x) associated, respectively, with collective and relative motion of the two constituent density waves. We formulate the elastic free energy in terms of these two variables and find that when w=0, its functional dependence on u is identical to that of a conventional smectic liquid crystal, while when u=0, its functional dependence on w is the same as that for the angle variable in a slightly anisotropic XY model. An arbitrariness in the definition of u and w allows a choice that eliminates all relevant couplings between them in the long-wavelength elastic energy. The topological defects of the system are dislocations with nonzero u and w components. We introduce a two-dimensional Burgers lattice for these dislocations, and compute the interaction between them. This has two parts: one arising from the u field that is short ranged and identical to the interaction between dislocations in an ordinary smectic liquid crystal, and one arising from the w field that is long ranged and identical to the logarithmic interaction between vortices in an XY model. The hydrodynamic modes of the AIC include first- and second-sound modes whose direction-dependent velocities are identical to those in ordinary smectics. The sound attenuations have a different direction dependence, however. The breakdown of hydrodynamics found in conventional smectic liquid crystals, with three of the five viscosities diverging as 1/? at small frequencies ?, occurs in these systems as well and is identical in all its details. In addition, there is a diffusive phason mode, not found in ordinary smectic liquid crystals, that leads to anomalously slow mechanical response analogous to that predicted in quasicrystals, but on a far more experimentally accessible time scale.

Polyphosphate esters containing ferrocene structures were synthesized from 1,1′-bis (p-hydroxyphenylamido) ferrocene and 1,1′-bis (p-hydroxyphenoxycarbonyl) ferrocene with aryl phosphorodichloridates by interfacial polycondensation using a phase transfer catalyst. The polymers were characterized by infrared, 1H-, 13C-, and 31-NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights were determined by end group analysis using 31P-NMR spectral data. The thermal stability and fire retardancy were respectively determined by thermogravimetry and limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurements. The polyamide-phosphate esters showed better thermal stability and higher LOI values than the polyester-phosphate esters.

The long-wavelength hydrodynamics of the Renn-Lubensky twist grain boundary phase with grain boundary angle 2pialpha, alpha irrational, is studied. We find three propagating sound modes, with two of the three sound speeds vanishing for propagation orthogonal to the grains, and one vanishing for propagation parallel to the grains as well. In addition, we find that the viscosities eta1, eta2, eta4, and eta5 diverge like 1/Absolute value of omega as frequency omega --> 0, with the divergent parts DELTAeta(i) satisfying DELTAeta1DELTAeta4=(DELTAeta5)2, exactly. Our results should also apply to the predicted decoupled lamellar phase.

Picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of the A (intramolecular charge transfer, ICT) state of DMABN, DMABN-d(6) and DMABN-N-15 have been obtained. The isotopic shifts identify the nu (s)(ph-N) mode as a band at 1281 cm(-1). The similar to 96 cm(-1) downshift of this mode from its ground state frequency rules out the electronic coupling PICT model and unequivocally supports the electronic decoupling TICT model. However, our results suggest some pyramidal character of the A state amino conformation.

We describe a novel class of periodically grafted amphiphilic copolymers (PGACs) that could serve as nonionic functional mimics of ionenes, the primary difference being that the periodically occurring charged units along the backbone of ionenes are replaced by hydrophilic oligoethylene glycol segments. The synthesis and properties of this new class of segmented polymers that carry a hydrophobic alkylene polyester backone with periodically placed hydrophilic oligo(oxyethylene) pendant units are presented. When the length of the intervening alkylene segment is adequately long, 22-carbons in this case, and the pendant unit is a hexaethylene glycol monomethyl ether (HEG) segment, the polymer chain appears to adopt a folded zigzag conformation, reminiscent of the accordion-type structure formed by cationic ionenes. This transformation is driven by the intrinsic immiscibility of the alkylene and HEG segments and is reinforced by the strong tendency for long chain alkylene segments to crystallize in a paraffinic lattice. Evidence of the formation of such structures comes from the AFM images, which reveal the formation of remarkably flat pancake-like aggregates that are formed by the lateral aggregation of individually collapsed polymer chains; importantly, the heights of these structures match well with the lamellar layer-spacing obtained from SAXS studies of bulk samples. DSC studies further confirm the crystallization of the intervening alkylene segments, especially when they are long (C22), suggesting the formation of the folded zigzag structures. In a suitably designed PGAC that carries diacetylene units symmetrically placed within the alkylene segment, attempts were made to cross-polymerize the diacetylene units and generate PEGylated nanoparticles. However, these attempts were unsuccessful demonstrating the very stringent geometric requirements for the topotactic polymerization of diacetylenes.
