Electrochemical oxidation of sodium borohydride (NaBH(4)) and ammonia borane (NH(3)BH(3)) (AB) have been studied on titanium carbide electrode. The oxidation is followed by using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and polarization measurements. A fuel cell with TiC as anode and 40 wt% Pt/C as cathode is constructed and the polarization behaviour is studied with NaBH(4) as anodic fuel and hydrogen peroxide as catholyte. A maximum power density of 65 mW cm(-2) at a load current density of 83 mA cm(-2) is obtained at 343 K in the case of borhydride-based fuel cell and a value of 85 mW cm(-2) at 105 mA cm(-2) is obtained in the case of AB-based fuel cell at 353 K. The present study is focussed at establishing an appropriate electrolyte system for developing electrochemically stable and fluorine (F) containing titania (F-TiO2) films on Cp Ti by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. To fabricate the F-TiO2 films on Cp Ti, different electrolyte solutions of chosen concentrations of tri-sodium orthophosphate (TSOP, Na3PO4 center dot I2H2O), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and various F-containing compounds such as ammonium fluoride (NH4F), potassium fluoride (KF), sodium fluoride (NaF) and potassium fluorotitanate (K2TiF6) are employed. The structural and morphological characteristics, thickness and elemental composition of the developed films have been assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The in-vitro electrochemical corrosion behavior of the films was studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) environment by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The XRD and SEM-EDS results show that the rutile content in the films vary in the range of 15-37 wt% and the F and P contents in the films is found to be in the range of 2-3 at% and 2.9-4.7 at% respectively, suggesting that the anatase to rutile phase transformation and the incorporation of F and P into the films are significantly controlled by the respective electrolyte solution. The SEM elemental mapping results show that the electrolyte borne F and P elements are incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the films under study, the film developed with 5 g TSOP+2 g KOH+3 g K2TiF6 electrolyte system exhibits considerably improved in-vitro corrosion resistance and therefore best suited for biomedical applications. Two copper-containing compounds [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(H(2)O)(2){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(CH(3)COO)] , I, and [Cu(5)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(H(2)O)(6){(NO(2))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(4)]center dot 5H(2)O, II, were prepared using sulphoisophthalic and nitroisophthalic acids. The removal of the coordinated water molecules in the compounds was investigated using in situ single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) transformation studies, temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The efficacy of SCSC transformation studies were established by the observation of dimensionality cross-over from a two-dimensional (I) to a three-dimensional structure, Cu(6)(mu(3)-OH)(4){(SO(3))-C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2)}(2)(CH(3)COO)(2), Ia, during the removal of the coordinated water molecules. Compound H exhibited a structural reorganization forming Cu(5)(mu(2)-OH)(2){(NO(2))C(6)H(3)-(COO)(2))(4)], Ha, possessing trimeric (Cu(3)O(12)) and dimeric (Cu(2)O(8)) copper clusters. The PXRD studies indicate that the three-dimensional structure (Ia) is transient and unstable, reverting back to the more stable two-dimensional structure (I) on cooling to room temperature. Compound Ha appears to be more stable at room temperature. The rehydration/dehydration studies using a modified TGA setup suggest complete rehydration of the water molecules, indicating that the water molecules in both compounds are labile. A possible model for the observed changes in the structures has been proposed. Magnetic studies indicate changes in the exchanges between the copper centers in Ha, whereas no such behavior was observed in Ia.

Recent advancements of material science and its applications have been immensely influenced by the modern development of organic luminescent materials. Among all organic luminogens, boron containing compounds have already established their stature as one of the indispensable classes of luminescent dyes. Boron, in its various forms e. g. triarylboranes, borate dyes and boron clusters, has attracted considerable attention owing to its several unique and excellent photophysical features. In very recent times, beyond the realms of solution-state studies, luminescent boron-containing compounds have emerged as a large and versatile class of stimuli responsive materials. Based on several fundamental concepts of chemistry, researchers have come up with an admirable variety of boron-containing materials with AIE (aggregation-induced emission), mechano-responsive luminescence, thermoresponsive-luminescence as well as a number of purely organic phosphorescent materials and other standalone examples. The unique chemical as well as physical properties of boron-containing compounds are largely responsible for the development of such materials. In this review these new findings are brought together.

The thermal degradation products of two sulfur polymers, poly(styrenedisulfide) (PSD) and poly(styrenetetrasulfide) (PST), were investigated in parallel by direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometry (DPMS) and by flash pyrolysis-GC/MS (Py-GC/MS). The time-scale of the two pyrolysis techniques is quite different, and therefore they were able to detect significantly different products in the pyrolysis of PSD and PST because of the thermal lability of sulfur-containing compounds. However, the results obtained are not contradictory, and satisfactory mechanisms for the thermal degradation of PSD and PST have been derived from the overall evidence available. Pyrolysis compounds containing sulfur, styrene, and a number of cyclic styrene sulfides and diphenyldithianes have been observed by DPMS. However, in flash pyrolysis-GC/MS, styrene, sulfur, only one cyclic styrene sulfide, and two isomers of diphenylthiophene have been detected. These thiophene derivatives were indeed absent among the compounds obtained by DPMS because they were the terminal (most thermally stable) species arising from further decomposition of the cyclic styrene sulfides formed in the primary thermal degradation processes of PSD and PST.

Thermodynamic constraints on component chemical potentials in three-phase fields introduced by the various isograms suggested in the literature are derived for a ternary system containing compounds. When compositions of two compounds lie on an isogram, it is associated with specific characteristics which can be used to obtain further understanding of the interplay of thermodynamic factors that determine phase equilibria. When two compounds are shared by adjacent three-phase fields, the constraints are dictated by binary compositions generated by the intersection of a line passing through the shared compounds with the sides of the ternary triangle. Generalized expressions for an arbitrary line through the triangle are presented. These are consistent with special relations obtained along Kohler, Colinet and Jacob isograms. Five axioms are introduced and proved. They provide valuable tools for checking consistency of thermodynamic measurements and for deriving thermodynamic properties from phase diagrams. Four new three-dimensional Mn2+ ion-containing compounds have been prepared by employing a hydrothermal reaction between Mn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, sulfodibenzoic acid (H(2)SDBA), imidazole, alkali hydroxide and water at 220 degrees C for 1 day. The compounds have Mn-5 (1-4) clusters connected by SDBA, forming the three-dimensional structure. A time and temperature dependent study on the synthesis mixture revealed the formation of a one-dimensional compound, Mn(SDBA)(H2O)(2), at lower temperatures (T <= 180 degrees C). The stabilization of the fcu related topology in the compounds is noteworthy. Magnetic studies indicate strong anti-ferromagnetic interactions between the Mn2+ ions within the clusters in the temperature range 75-300 K. The rare participation of a sulfonyl group in the bonding is important and can pave way for the design of new structures.

Sequential transformation in a family of metal-organic framework compounds has been investigated employing both a solid-state as well as a solution mediated route. The compounds, cobalt oxy-bis(benzoate) and manganese oxybis(benzoate) having a two-dimensional structure, were reacted with bipyridine forming cobalt oxy-bis(benzoate)-4,4'-bipyridine and manganese oxy-bis(benzoate)-4,4'-bipyridine, respectively. The bipyridine containing compounds appear to form sequentially through stable intermediates. For the cobalt system, the transformation from a two-dimensional compound, Co(H2O)(2)(OBA)] (OBA = 4,4'-oxy-bis(benzoate)), I, to two different three-dimensional compounds, Co(bpy)(OBA)]center dot bpy, II, (bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) and Co(bpy)(0.5)(OBA)], III, and reversibility between II and III have been investigated. In the manganese system, transformation from a two-dimensional compound, Mn(H2O)(2)(OBA)], Ia, to two different three-dimensional compounds, Mn (bpy)(OBA)]center dot bpy, Ha and Ha to Mn(bpy)(0.5)(OBA)], Ilia, has been investigated. It has also been possible to identify intermediate products during these transformation reactions. The possible pathways for the formation of the compounds were postulated.

Background: Cotton leaf curl Kokhran Virus-Dabawali (CLCuKV-Dab) is a monopartite begomovirus encoding two proteins V1 and V2 in the virion sense and four proteins Cl, C2, C3 and C4 in the complementary sense. The C4 protein of monopartite begomoviruses has been implicated to play a role in symptom determination and virus movement. The present work aims at the biochemical characterization of this protein. Methods: The C4 protein of CLCuKV-Dab was purified in fusion with GST and tested for the ability to hydrolyze ATP and other phosphate containing compounds. ATPase activity was assayed by using radiolabeled gamma-32P]-ATP and separating the product of reaction by thin layer chromatography. The hydrolysis of other compounds was monitored by the formation of a blue colored phosphomolybdate complex which was estimated by measuring the absorbance at 655 nm. Results: The purified GST-C4 protein exhibited metal ion dependent ATPase and inorganic pyrophosphatase activities. Deletion of a sequence resembling the catalytic motif present in phosphotyrosine phosphatases resulted in 70% reduction in both the activities. Mutational analysis suggested arginine 13 to be catalytically important for the ATPase and cysteine 8 for the pyrophosphatase activity of GST-C4. Interaction of V2 with GST-C4 resulted in an increase in both the enzymatic activities of GST-C4. Conclusions: The residues important for the enzymatic activities of GST-C4 are present in a motif different from the classical Walker motifs and the non-classical ATP binding motifs reported so far. General significance: The C4 protein of CLCuKV-Dab, a putative natively unfolded protein, exhibits enzymatic activities.

In recent times, luminescent materials with tunable emission properties have found applications in almost all aspects of modern material sciences. Any discussion on the recent developments in luminescent materials would be incomplete if one does not account for the versatile photophysical features of boron containing compounds. Apart from triarylboranes and tetra-coordinate borate dyes, luminescent materials consisting of boron clusters have also found immense interest in recent times. Recent studies have unveiled the opportunities hidden within boranes, carboranes and metalloboranes, etc. as active constituents of luminescent materials. From simple illustrations of luminescence, to advanced applications in LASERs, OLEDs and bioimaging, etc., the unique features of such compounds and their promising versatility have already been established. In this review, recent revelations about the excellent photophysical properties of such materials are discussed.

Asymmetric tri-bridged diruthenium(III) complexes, [Ru2O(O(2)CR)(3)(en) (PPh(3))(2)](ClO4) (R = C6H4-p-X: X = OMe (1a), Me (1b); en=1,2-diaminoethane), were prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1a 3CHCl(3), crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 14.029(5), b = 14.205(5), c = 20.610(6) Angstrom, alpha= 107.26(3), beta = 101.84(3), gamma= 97.57(3)degrees, V= 3756(2) Angstrom(3) and Z = 2. The complex has an {Ru-2(mu-O)(mu-O(2)CR)(2)(2+)} core and exhibits [O4PRu(mu-O)RuPO2N2](+) coordination environments for the metal centers. The novel structural feature is the asymmetric arrangement of ligands at the terminal sites of the core which shows an Ru... Ru separation of 3.226(3) Angstrom and an Ru-O-Ru angle of 119.2(5)degrees. An intense visible band observed near 570 nm is assigned to a charge transfer transition involving the d pi-Ru(III) and p pi-mu-O Orbitals. Cyclic voltammetry of the complexes displays a reversible Ru-2(III,III) reversible arrow Ru-2(III,IV) couple near 0.8 V (versus SCE) in MeCN-0.1 M TBAP.

A general method for the preparation of novel disulfide-tethered macrocyclic diacylglycerols (DAGs) has been described. Overall synthesis involved stepwise protection, acylation, and deprotection to yield the bis(omega-bromoacyl) glycerols. In the crucial macrocyclization step, a unique reagent, benzyltriethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate (BTAT), has been used to convert individual bis(omega-bromoacyl) glycerols to their respective macrocyclic disulfides. DAG 6, which had ether linkages between hydrocarbon chains and the glycerol backbone, was also synthesized from an appropriate precursor using a similar protocol. One of the DAGs (DAG 5) had a carbon-carbon tether instead of a disulfide one and was synthesized using modified Glaser coupling. Preparation of alpha-disulfide-tethered DAG (DAG 4) required an alternative method, as treatment of the bisbromo precursor with BTAT gave a mixture of several compounds from which separation of the target molecule was cumbersome. To avoid this problem, the bisbromide was converted to its corresponding dithiocyanate, which on further treatment with BTAT yielded the desired DAG (DAG 4) in good yield. Upon treatment with the reducing agent dithiothreitol (DTT), the DAGs that contain a disulfide tether could be quantitatively converted to their "open-chain" thiol analogues. These macrocyclic DAGs and their reduced "open-chain" analogues have been incorporated in DPPC vesicles to study their effect on model membranes. Upon incorporation of DAG 1 in DPPC vesicles, formation of new isotropic phases was observed by P-31 NMR, These isotropic phases disappeared completely on opening the macrocyclic ring by a reducing agent. The thermotropic properties of DPPC bilayers having DAGs (1-6) incorporated at various concentrations were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Incorporation of DAGs in general reduced the cooperativity unit (CU) of the vesicles. Similar experiments with reduced "open-chain" DAGs incorporated in a DPPC bilayer indicated a recovery of CU with respect to their macrocyclic "disulfide" counterparts. The effect of inclusion of these DAGs on the activity of phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) was studied in vitro. Incorporation of DAC 1 in DPPC membranes potentiated both bee venom and cobra venom PLA(2) activities.

A cDNA clone for the Ya subunit of glutathione transferase from rat liver was constructed in E.coli. The clone hybridized to Ya and Yc subunit messenger RNAs. On the basis of experiments involving cell-free translation and hybridization to the cloned probe, it was shown that prototype inducers of cytochrome P-450 such as phenobarbitone and 3-methylcholanthrene as well as inhibitors such as CoCl2 and 3-amino-l,2,4-triazole enhanced the glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) messenger RNA contents in rat liver. A comparative study with the induction of cytochrome P-450 (b+e) by phenobarbitone revealed that the drug manifested a striking increase in the nuclear pre-messenger RNAs for the cytochrome at 12 hr, but did not significantly affect the same in the case of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc). 3-Amino-l, 2,4-tnazole and CoCl- blocked the phenobarbitone mediated increase in cytochrome P-450 (b+e) nuclear pre-messenger RNAs. These compounds did not significantly affect the glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) nuclear pre-messenger RNA levels. The polysomal, poly (A)- containing messenger RNAs for cytochrome P-450 (b+e) increased by 12–15 fold after phenobarbitone administration, reached a maximum around 16hr and then decreased sharply. In comparison, the increase in the case of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) mesenger RNAs was sluggish and steady and a value of 3–4 fold was reached around 24 hr. Run-off transcription rates for cytochrome P-450 (b+e) increased by nearly 15 fold in 4 hr after phenobarbitone administration, whereas the increase for glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) was only 2.0 fold. At 12 hr after the drug administration, the glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) transcription rates were near normal. Administration of 3-amino-l,2,4-triazole and CoCl2 blocked the phenobarbitone-mediated increase in the transcription of cytochrome P-450 (b+e) messenger RNAs. These compounds at best had only marginal effects on the transcription of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) messenger RNAs. The half-life of cytochrome P-450 (b+e) messenger RNA was estimated to be 3–4 hr, whereas that for glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) was found to be 8-9 hr. Administration of phenobarbitone enhanced the half-life of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) messenger RNA by nearly two fold. It is suggested that while transcription activation may play a primary role in the induction of cytochrome P-450 (b+e), the induction of glutathione transferase (Ya+Yc) may essentially involve stabilization of the messenger RNAs.
