In view of its non-toxicity, and good dielectric properties, castor oil, a polar liquid dielectric of vegetable origin is suggested as a possible alternative to PCB's for capacitor applications. In this paper the dielectric properties (including partial discharge behavior), of all-polypropylene and paper-polypropylene capacitors with castor oil as impregnant, are reported. The paper also contains results of life studies conducted under accelerated electrical and thermal stresses when they are occurring both individually and combined. The data obtained have been statistically analyzed and approximate life of the system calculated bylinear extrapolation.

Several new liquids impregnants for capacitors have been suggested as possible alternatives to PCB'S which are being replaced in view of their harmful effects. The application of castor oil, a vegetable product, has been studied in the authors laboratary with the same obejective.

THE use of NMR to investigate the quality of the oil as a function of maturity of the seeds is demonstrated for sunflower seeds. The percentages of the saturated and individual unsaturated aids are determined as a function of time after flowering of the seeds. The percentage of saturated fatty acids is found to decrease with maturity of seeds whereas the extent of the unsaturated acids increases.

India is the midst of oil crisis. Many long term solution have been suggested. The question that is being asked is: can something be done immediately? Prof. A.K.N Reddy, who leads the group on the application of science & Techonology to rural area at the Indian Institute of Science has come with simple solutions which appears to well within our present technological capability.

The spreadability of SAE-30 oil on Al-12 Si base (LM-13) alloy containing dispersed graphite particles about 50 μm average size in its matrix is found to be greater than on either LM-13 with no graphite or brass. It is also found that the spreadability on LM-13 base alloys increase with increasing volume of graphite dispersion in the matrix of these alloys. Further increases in the spreadability of oil on machined LM-13-graphite particle composite test surfaces occur if these are rubbed initially against control discs of either LM-13 or grey cast iron. The formation of a triboinduced graphite-rich layer, confirmed by esca, appears to be responsible for the improved oil spreadability on the rubbed test surfaces of LM-13 base alloys as compared to the as-machined test surfaces prior to rubbing. The triboinduced layer of graphite is apparently responsible for the observed reduction in the friction, wear and seizing tendency of triboelements made from aluminium alloy-graphite particle composites.

A study of the essential features of piston rings in the cylinder liner of an internal combustion engine reveals that the lubrication problem posed by it is basically that of a slider bearing. According to steady-flow-hydrodynamics, viz. Image the oil film thickness becomes zero at the dead centre positions as the velocity, U = 0. In practice, however, such a phenomenon cannot be supported by consideration of the wear rates of pistion rings and cylinder liners. This can be explained by including the “squeeze” action term in the

The operational life and reliability of I.C. engines are limited to a certain extent by the break down of the engine components due to wear. It is advantageous to know the condition of an engine and its components without disassembling for detailed measurements. This paper describes the possibility of employing chemical analysis of the used crank case oil to predict the wear of engine components. It is concluded that the acidity and carbon contents of the crank case oil play a significant role in assessing the wear of copper-lead bearings used for the big end of the connecting rod.

With an objective to replace a water droplet from a steel surface by oil we study here the impact of injecting a hydrophilic/lipophilic surfactant into the droplet or into the surrounding oil reservoir. Contact angle goniometery, Grazing angle FTIR spectroscopy and Atomic force microscopy are used to record the oil/water interfacial tension, surface energetics of the substrate under the oil and water phases as well as the corresponding physical states of the substrates. Such energetics reflect the rate at which the excess surfactant molecules accumulate at the water/oil interface and desorb into the phases. The molecules diffuse into the substrate from the phases and build up specific molecular configurations which, with the interfacial tension, control the non-equilibrium progress of and the equilibrium status of the contact line. The study shows that the most efficient replacement of water by the surrounding oil happens when a surfactant is sparingly soluble in the supplier oil phase and highly soluble in the recipient water phase.

This study discusses grafting of methyl methacrylate units from thepolymeric soybean oil peroxide to produce poly(soybean oil-graft-methyl methacrylate) (PSO-g-PMMA). The degradation of this copolymer in solution was evaluated in the presence of different lipases, viz Candida rugosa (CR), Lipolase 100T (LP), Novozym 435 (N435) and Porcine pancreas (PP), at different temperatures The copolymer degraded by specific chain end scission and the mass fraction of the specific product evolved was determined The degradation was modeled using continuous distribution kinetics to determine the rate coefficients ofmenzymatic chain end scission and deactivation of the enzyme The enzymes, CR. LP and N435 exhibited maximum activity for the degradation of PSO-g-PMMA at 60 degrees C, while PP was most active at 50 degrees C. The thermal degradability of the copolymer, assessed by thermo-gravimetry, indicated that the activation energy of degradation of the copolymer was 154 kJ mol(-1), which was lesser than that of the PMMA homopolymer.

Oil droplets are dispersed in water by an anionic urfactant to form an emulsion. The lubricity of this emulsion in steel/steel interaction is explored in a ball on flat nanotribometer. The droplet size and charge are measured using dynamic light scattering, while the substrate charge density is estimated using the pH titration method. These data are combined to calculate the DLVO forces for the droplets generated for a range of surfactant concentration and two oil to water volume ratios. The droplets have a clear bi-modal size distribution. The study shows that the smaller droplets which experience weak repulsion are situated (at the highest DLVO barrier) much closer to the substrate than thebigger droplets, which experience the same DLVO force, are. We suggest that the smaller droplets thus play a more important role in lubricity than what the bigger droplets do. The largest volume of such small droplets occurs in the 0.5 mM-1 mM range of surfactant concentration and 1% oil to water volume ratio, where the coefficient of friction is also observed to be the least. The carboxyl chain of some molecules has been found to be responsible for causing rearrangements and controlling their course. This chain effect, which operates during reactions involving carbonium ions, is illustrated with examples from Sandalwood oil chemistry.

The structure, synthesis, and configuration of the lactone of tricycloekasantalic acid have been described. It has been shown that in the formation of this lactone (XII) from the acids (I) or (II) a rearrangement is involved.
