Total synthesis of substituted (±)-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17?-ols and their 9?-isomers

Total syntheses of (±)-1,4-dimethoxy-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17?-ol(11a), (±)-2,3-dimethoxy-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17?-ol (11b), and (±)-3-methoxy-6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10)trien-17?-ol (11c), have been carried out starting from 4,7-dimethoxy-3,3-dimethylindan-1-one (1), 5,6-dimethoxy-3,3-dimethylindan-1-one (2), and 4?-methoxy-3-methylbut-2-enophenone (4), respectively. Generally, it is found that the intermediate 6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10),8-tetraen-17?-ols (10), on lithium�liquid ammonia reduction, yield a mixture of 8?,9?- and 8?,9?-trienols, (11) and (12) respectively, in the ratio 1 : 1. This is due to the comparable stabilities of these two isomers. However, the reduction carried out in presence of aniline affords a higher percentage of the 8?,9?-trienol (11). The assignment of configurations is made by chemical and 1H n.m.r. analysis. Catalytic hydrogenation of the tetraenols (10) is shown to proceed via initial isomerisation to the corresponding 6,6-dimethyl-B-norestra-1,3,5(10),9(11)-tetraen-17?-ols (26), followed by hydrogenation from the ?-side to give, exclusively, the 8?,9?-trienols (12).

Poly-ols Based Sol-Gel Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Thin Films

We demonstrate that the structural and optical properties of a sol-gel deposited zinc oxide thin film can be tuned by varying the composition of the sol, consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. A systematic study of the effect of the composition of sol on the mean grain size, thickness, and defect density of the zinc oxide film is presented. About 20% glycerol content in the sol is observed to improve the quality of the film, as evaluated by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence studies. Thus, optimizing the composition of the sol for about 60 nm thick ZnO film using 20% glycerol resulted in the zinc oxide film that is about 80% transparent in visible spectrum, exhibiting electrical resistivity of about 18 Omega cm and field-effect mobility of 0.78 cm(2)/(V s). An Enantiospecific Approach to Irregular Ligusticum grayi Sesquiterpenes: Synthesis of cis-Preisothapsa-2,8(12)-diene

Enantiospecific syntheses of 1-epi- (or cis-)-preisothapsa-2,8(12)-diene and 1-epi- and 1,8-diepipreisothapsa-2-en-12-ols, starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-carvone, have been accomplished.

Dynamics between patent latent variables and patent price

This paper focuses on studying the relationship between patent latent variables and patent price. From the existing literature, seven patent latent variables, namely age, generality, originality, foreign filings, technology field, forward citations, and backward citations were identified as having an influence on patent value. We used Ocean Tomo's patent auction price data in this study. We transformed the price and the predictor variables (excluding the dummy variables) to its logarithmic value. The OLS estimates revealed that forward citations and foreign filings were positively correlated to price. Both the variables jointly explained 14.79% of the variance in patent pricing. We did not find sufficient evidence to come up with any definite conclusions on the relationship between price and the variables such as age, technology field, generality, backward citations and originality.
