We report the ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties of the composite films of lithium tantalate (LT) nanoparticle in poly(vinylidene fluoride) PVDF matrix at different volume fractions of LT (f(LT) = 0.047, 0.09 and 0.17). For an applied electric field of 150 kV cm(-1) the nonvolatile polarization of the composite was observed to increase from 0.014 mu C cm(-2) at f(LT) = 0 to 2.06 mu C cm(-2) at f(LT) = 0.17. For f(LT) = 0.17, the composite films exhibit a saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop with a remanent polarization (2P(r) = 4.13 mu C cm(-2)). Compared with pure poled PVDF the composite films also showed a factor of about five enhancement in the pyroelectric coefficient at f(LT) = 0.17. When used in energy detection mode the pyroelectric voltage sensitivity of the composite films was found to increase from 3.93 to 18.5 VJ(-1) with an increase in f(LT) from 0.0 to 0.17.

Thin films are developed by dispersing carbon black nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an epoxy polymer. The films show a large variation in electrical resistance when subjected to quasi-static and dynamic mechanical loading. This phenomenon is attributed to the change in the band-gap of the CNTs due to the applied strain, and also to the change in the volume fraction of the constituent phases in the percolation network. Under quasi-static loading, the films show a nonlinear response. This nonlinearity in the response of the films is primarily attributed to the pre-yield softening of the epoxy polymer. The electrical resistance of the films is found to be strongly dependent on the magnitude and frequency of the applied dynamic strain, induced by a piezoelectric substrate. Interestingly, the resistance variation is found to be a linear function of frequency and dynamic strain. Samples with a small concentration of just 0.57% of CNT show a sensitivity as high as 2.5% MPa-1 for static mechanical loading. A mathematical model based on Bruggeman's effective medium theory is developed to better understand the experimental results. Dynamic mechanical loading experiments reveal a sensitivity as high as 0.007% Hz(-1) at a constant small-amplitude vibration and up to 0.13%/mu-strain at 0-500 Hz vibration. Potential applications of such thin films include highly sensitive strain sensors, accelerometers, artificial neural networks, artificial skin and polymer electronics.

One of the problems associated with outdoor polymeric insulators is tracking and erosion of the weathershed which can directly influence the reliability of the power system. Flame retardants are added to the base material to enhance its tracking and erosion resistance. Hydroxide fillers are regarded as the best flame retardants. This paper deals with studies related to nano - sized magnesium dihydroxide (MDH) and micron-sized Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) fillers as flame retardants in RTV silicone rubber. Tracking and erosion resistance studies were carried out on MDH and ATH silicone rubber composites using an inclined plane tracking and erosion (IPT) resistance tester. The MDH filled (5% by wt) composites performed much better than ATH composites in terms of eroded mass, depth of erosion, width and length of erosion. The eroded mass of MDH composite is 49.8 % that of ATH composite which can be attributed to high surface area and higher thermal stability of MDH nanofillers.

Composing nanocomposites: Co-digestive ripening of as-prepared Mg and Cu colloids prepared by the solvated metal atom dispersion method results in a highly monodisperse colloid of Mg/Cu nanocomposite with an average particle size of 3.0 +/- 0.5 nm. Annealing of these samples at 300 degrees C gives the Cu/MgO nanocomposite.

We have observed the exchange spring behavior in the soft (Fe3O4)-hard (BaCa2Fe16O27)-ferrite composite by tailoring the particle size of the individual phases and by suitable thermal treatment of the composite. The magnetization curve for the nanocomposite heated at 800 degrees C shows a single loop hysteresis showing the existence of the exchange spring phenomena in the composite and an enhancement of 13% in (BH)(max) compared to the parent hard ferrite (BaCa2Fe16O27). The Henkel plot provides the proof of the presence of the exchange interaction between the soft and hard grains as well as its dominance over the dipolar interaction in the nanocomposite.

The possibility of using spin-probe electron spin resonance (ESR) as a tool to study glass transition temperature, T g, of polymer electrolytes is explored in 4 hydroxy 2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidine N oxyl (TEMPOL) doped composite polymer electrolyte (PEG)46LiClO4 dispersed with nanoparticles of hydrotalcite. The T g is estimated from the measured values of T 50G, the temperature at which the extrema separation 2A zz of the broad powder spectrum decreases to 50 G. In another method, the correlation time τc for the spin probe dynamics was determined by computer simulation of the ESR spectra and T g has been identified as the temperature at which τc begins to show temperature dependence. While both methods give values of T g close to those obtained from differential scanning calorimetry, it is concluded that more work is required to establish spin-probe ESR as a reliable technique for the determination of T g.

Iron encapsulated carbon nanoparticle polyvinyl chloride composite films have been prepared by solvent mixing and drying method. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). A 5 nm thin graphitic carbon coating is observed on cubic Fe nanoparticles. The microwave absorption studies by wave guide technique in the Ka band range showed highest electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of 18dB on a 300 micron thick film. The shielding efficiency depends on weight % of the filler in the composite. The data obtained for different films indicate that these lightweight materials are good candidates for potential electromagnetic interference shielding applications.

The synthesis of colloids of copper and zinc nanoparticles by solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) is described. The as-prepared colloids with a large size distribution of the particles are transformed into colloidal nanoparticles of a narrow size distribution by the digestive ripening process which involves refluxing the colloid at or near the boiling point of the solvent in the presence of a passivating ligand. The copper nanoparticles of 2.1 ± 0.3 nm and zinc nanoparticles of 3.9 ± 0.3 nm diameters have thus been obtained. Digestive ripening of the as-prepared copper and zinc colloids together in the presence of a passivating agent gave Cu@ZnO core−shell nanoparticles, with an average diameter of 3.0 ± 0.7 nm. Particles synthesized in this manner were characterized by UV−visible spectroscopy, high-resolution electron microscopy, energy-filtered electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction methods which confirm the core−shell structure.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were discovered by Iijima in 1991 as the fourth form of carbon. Carbon nanotubes are the ultimate form of the carbon fibre because of its high Young's modulus in the order of 1 TPa, which is very useful for load transfer in nanocomposites. In the present work, CNT/Cu nanocomposites were fabricated by the powder metallurgy technique, and after extrusion of the nanocomposites, bright field transmission electron microscopic studies were carried out. From the transmission electron microscopic images obtained, a novel method of ascertaining the Young's modulus of multiwalled CNTs is worked out in the present paper, which turns out to be 0.94 TPa, which is consistent with experimental results. Furthermore, an attempt is made to investigate the microhardness of copper by reinforcing it with multiwalled CNTs. There is an increase in hardness by twofold in CNT/Cu nanocomposites as compared to pure Cu matrix. This is due to high relative density, even distribution of CNTs and proper bonding at CNT/Cu interfaces.

One of the biggest challenges when considering polymer nanocomposites for electrical insulation applications lies in determining their electrical properties accurately, which in turn depend on several factors, primary being dispersion of particles in the polymer matrix. With this background, this paper reports an experimental study to understand the effects of different processing techniques on the dispersion of filler particles in the polymer matrix and their related effect on the dielectric properties of the composites. Polymer composite and nanocomposite samples for the study were prepared by mixing 10% by weight of commercially available TiO2 particles of two different sizes in epoxy using different processing methods. A considerable effect of the composite processing method could be seen in the dielectric properties of nanocomposites.

Nanocrystalline Fe powders were synthesized by transmetallation reaction and embedded in silica to form Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite. Thermomagnetic study of the as-prepared Fe sample indicates the presence of Fe3O4 and Fe particles. Oxidation studies of Fe and Fe-SiO2 show an increased thermal stability of Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite over pure Fe. The Fe-SiO2 shows an enhanced oxidation temperature (i.e., 780 K) and a maximum saturation magnetization value of (135 emu/g) with 64 wt.% of Fe content in silica. Electrical and dielectric behaviour of the Fe-SiO2 nanocomposite has been investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. Low frequency ac conductivity and dielectric constants were found to be influenced by desorptions of chemisorbed moisture. High saturation magnetization, thermal stability, frequency-dependent conductivity and low power loss make Fe-silica a promising material for high frequency applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We have prepared a new nanocomposite polymer electrolyte using nanoparticles of hydrotalcite, an anionic clay, as the filler. Hydrotalcite has the chemical composition [M-1-x(2+) M-x(3+) (OH)(2)](x+) [A(x/n)(n-)center dot mH(2)O] where M2+ is a divalent cation (e.g. Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+,etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent cation (e.g. Al3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, etc.). A(n-) is an anion intercalated between the positively charged double hydroxide layers. The nanoparticles of [Mg0.67Al0.33 (OH)(2)] [(CO3)(0.17)center dot mH(2)O] were prepared by the co-precipitation method (average particle size as observed by TEM similar to 50 nm) and were doped into poly(ethylene glycol) PEG (m.w.2000) complexed with LiCIO4. Samples with different wt.% of hydrotalcite were prepared and characterized using XRD, DSC, TGA, impedance spectroscopy and NMR. Ionic conductivity for the pristine sample, similar to 7.3 x 10(-7) S cm(-1), was enhanced to a maximum of = 1.1 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) for 3.6 wt.% nanoparticle doped sample. We propose that the enhancement of ionic conductivity is caused by percolation effects of the high conductivity paths provided by interfaces between the nanoparticles and the polymer electrolyte. In recent times, there has been an ever-growing need for polymer-based multifunctional materials for electronic packaging applications. In this direction, epoxy-Al2O3 nanocomposites at low filler loadings can provide an excellent material option, especially from the point of view of their dielectric properties. This paper reports the dielectric characteristics for such a system, results of which are observed to be interesting, unique, and advantageous as compared to traditionally used microcomposite systems. Nanocomposites are found to display lower values of permittivity/tan delta over a wide frequency range as compared to that of unfilled epoxy. This surprising observation has been attributed to the interaction between the epoxy chains and the nanoparticles, and in this paper this phenomenon is analyzed using a dual layer interface model reported for polymer nanocomposites. As for the other dielectric properties associated with the nanocomposites, the nano-filler loading seems to have a significant effect. The dc resistivity and ac dielectric strength of the nanocomposites were observed to be lower than that of the unfilled epoxy system at the investigated filler loadings, whereas the electrical discharge resistant properties showed a significant enhancement. Further analysis of the results obtained in this paper shows that the morphology of the interface region and its characteristics decide the observed interesting dielectric behaviors.

Nanoscale dispersions of intermetallic Ti2Ni particles in an ordered TiNi intermetallic matrix have been produced by rapid solidification processing of near equiatomic TiNi alloys containing small amount of Si utilising the principle of kinetic competition in the undercooled liquid, A detailed characterisation of the microstructures obtained by different processing conditions was carried out to establish the trend of the refinement of the scale of microstructure. The observed microstructural conditions are rationalised in terms of a metastable phase diagram and the Uhlmann, Chalmers and Jackson theory of the trapping of second phase particles by a moving interface.

Glass composites of strontium tetraborate, SrB4O7 (SBO) with bismuth vanadate, Bi2VO5.5 (BiV) of the composition (1-x) SBO-x BN (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.75), have been synthesized. X-ray powder diffraction and electron microscopy indicate as-quenched composites to be amorphous and the annealed samples showed the presence of nanometer sized particles of BN dispersed in the glassy matrix of SBO. The dielectric constant of these composites increases with increase in the volume fraction of BiV, at 300 K. The measured dielectric constant of the composite very nearly obeys the Maxwell's relationship. Optical transmission studies confirm a steady shirt in the optical absorption edge towards longer wavelengths with increase in x
