A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based hardware accelerator for multi-conductor parasitic capacitance extraction, using Method of Moments (MoM), is presented in this paper. Due to the prohibitive cost of solving a dense algebraic system formed by MoM, linear complexity fast solver algorithms have been developed in the past to expedite the matrix-vector product computation in a Krylov sub-space based iterative solver framework. However, as the number of conductors in a system increases leading to a corresponding increase in the number of right-hand-side (RHS) vectors, the computational cost for multiple matrix-vector products present a time bottleneck, especially for ill-conditioned system matrices. In this work, an FPGA based hardware implementation is proposed to parallelize the iterative matrix solution for multiple RHS vectors in a low-rank compression based fast solver scheme. The method is applied to accelerate electrostatic parasitic capacitance extraction of multiple conductors in a Ball Grid Array (BGA) package. Speed-ups up to 13x over equivalent software implementation on an Intel Core i5 processor for dense matrix-vector products and 12x for QR compressed matrix-vector products is achieved using a Virtex-6 XC6VLX240T FPGA on Xilinx's ML605 board.

In this article, a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based hardware accelerator for 3D electromagnetic extraction, using Method of Moments (MoM) is presented. As the number of nets or ports in a system increases, leading to a corresponding increase in the number of right-hand-side (RHS) vectors, the computational cost for multiple matrix-vector products presents a time bottleneck in a linear-complexity fast solver framework. In this work, an FPGA-based hardware implementation is proposed toward a two-level parallelization scheme: (i) matrix level parallelization for single RHS and (ii) pipelining for multiple-RHS. The method is applied to accelerate electrostatic parasitic capacitance extraction of multiple nets in a Ball Grid Array (BGA) package. The acceleration is shown to be linearly scalable with FPGA resources and speed-ups over 10x against equivalent software implementation on a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor is achieved using a Virtex-6 XC6VLX240T FPGA on Xilinx's ML605 board with the implemented design operating at 200MHz clock frequency. Three-dimensional (3-D) full-wave electromagnetic simulation using method of moments (MoM) under the framework of fast solver algorithms like fast multipole method (FMM) is often bottlenecked by the speed of convergence of the Krylov-subspace-based iterative process. This is primarily because the electric field integral equation (EFIE) matrix, even with cutting-edge preconditioning techniques, often exhibits bad spectral properties arising from frequency or geometry-based ill-conditioning, which render iterative solvers slow to converge or stagnate occasionally. In this communication, a novel technique to expedite the convergence of MoMmatrix solution at a specific frequency is proposed, by extracting and applying Eigen-vectors from a previously solved neighboring frequency in an augmented generalized minimum residual (AGMRES) iterative framework. This technique can be applied in unison with any preconditioner. Numerical results demonstrate up to 40% speed-up in convergence using the proposed Eigen-AGMRES method.

By using the method of characteristics, the effect of footing-soil interface friction angle (delta) on the bearing capacity factor N-gamma was computed for a strip footing. The analysis was performed by employing a curved trapped wedge under the footing base; this wedge joins the footing base at a distance B-t from the footing edge. For a given footing width (B), the value of B-t increases continuously with a decrease in delta. For delta = 0, no trapped wedge exists below the footing base, that is, B-t/B = 0.5. On the contrary, with delta = phi, the point of emergence of the trapped wedge approaches toward the footing edge with an increase in phi. The magnitude of N-gamma increases substantially with an increase in delta/phi. The maximum depth of the plastic zone becomes higher for greater values of delta/phi. The results from the present analysis were found to compare well with those reported in the literature.

Careful study of various aspects presented in the note reveals basic fallacies in the concept and final conclusions. The Authors claim to have presented a new method of determining C-v. However, the note does not contain a new method. In fact, the method proposed is an attempt to generate settlement vs. time data using only two values of (t,8). The Authors have used a rectangular hyperbola method to determine C-v from the predicated 8- t data. In this context, the title of the paper itself is misleading and questionable. The Authors have compared C-v values predicated with measured values, both of them being the results of the rectangular hyperbola method.

Arc discharge between graphite electrodes under a relatively high pressure of hydrogen yields graphene flakes generally containing 2-4 layers in the inner wall region of the arc chamber. The graphene flakes so obtained have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The method is eminently suited to dope graphene with boron and nitrogen by carrying out arc discharge in the presence of diborane and pyridine respectively.

The method of initial functions has been applied for deriving higher order theories for cross-ply laminated composite thick rectangular plates. The equations of three-dimensional elasticity have been used. No a priori assumptions regarding the distribution of stresses or displacements are needed. Numerical solutions of the governing equations have been presented for simply supported edges and the results are compared with available ones.

The method of characteristics with some simplifying assumptions is made applicable for analyzing a given straight slope. By assuming that the mobilized shear strength varies with depth, and treating the whole soil mass as a series of layers, factors of safety of a given slope at different heights and a series of lines with different mobilized shear strength are obtained. The results show that the factors of safety obtained by the present method are lower than those obtained by friction circle method.

A new method of calculating the calorific values of fossil fuels from their chemical composition has been developed, based on the concept that heats of reaction of stoichiometric fuel-oxidizer systems are rectilinearly related with the total oxidizing or reducing valancies of the mixture. The calorific value of fossil fuels has been shown to be directly related to the net reducing valencies of the fuel. The proposed method is simple and compares favourably with the other prominent methods reported in the literature.

The breakdown of the usual method of Fourier transforms in the problem of an external line crack in a thin infinite elastic plate is discovered and the correct solution of this problem is derived using the concept of a generalised Fourier transform of a type discussed first by Golecki [1] in connection with Flamant's problem.

The aim of this investigation is to evolve a method of solving two-dimensional unsteady flow problems by the method of characteristics. This involves the reduction of the given system of equations to an equivalent system where only interior derivatives occur on a characteristic surface. From this system, four special bicharacteristic directional derivatives are chosen. A finite difference scheme is prescribed for solving the equations. General rectangular lattices are also considered. As an example, we investigate the propagation of an initial pressure distribution in a medium at rest.

A simple yet fairly accurate method of calculating the ideal detonation velocity of an organic explosive from a knowledge of the chemical composition alone is proposed. The method is based on the concept that the energetics of a stoichiometrically balanced fuel-oxidizer system is a function of the total oxidizing or reducing valences of the composition. A combination of the valences in the form of Image , where R and P are, respectively, the reducing and oxidizing valences and MW is the molecular weight, has been found to be linearly related to the detonation velocity of the expolosive. The predicting capacity of the method has been found to be superior to other methods in the literature.

A direct method of preparing cast aluminium alloy-graphite particle composites using uncoated graphite particles is reported. The method consists of introducing and dispersing uncoated but suitably pretreated graphite particles in aluminium alloy melts, and casting the resulting composite melts in suitable permanent moulds. The optical pretreatment required for the dispersion of the uncoated graphite particles in aluminium alloy melts consists of heating the graphite particles to 400° C in air for 1 h just prior to their dispersion in the melts. The effects of alloying elements such as Si, Cu and Mg on the dispersability of pretreated graphite in molten aluminium have also been reported. It was found that additions of about 0.5% Mg or 5% Si significantly improve the dispersability of graphite particles in aluminium alloy melts as indicated by the high recoveries of graphite in the castings of these composites. It was also possible to disperse upto 3% graphite in LM 13 alloy melts and retain the graphite particles in a well distributed fashion in the castings using the pre-heat-treated graphite particles. The observations in this study have been related to the information presently available on wetting between graphite and molten aluminium in the presence of different elements and our own thermogravimetric analysis studies on graphite particles. Physical and mechanical properties of LM 13-3% graphite composite made using pre-heat-treated graphite powder, were found to be adequate for many applications, including pistons which have been successfully used in internal combustion engines.
