The structure and mechanical properties of crystalline materials of three boron difluoride dibenzoylmethane (BF(2)dbm) derivatives were investigated to examine the correlation, if any, among mechanochromic luminescence (ML) behaviour, solid-state structure, and the mechanical behaviour of single crystals. Qualitative mechanical deformation tests show that the crystals of BF(2)dbm(Bu-t)(2) can be bent permanently, whereas those of BF(2)dbm(OMe)(2) exhibit an inhomogeneous shearing mode of deformation, and finally BF(2)dbmOMe crystals are brittle. Quantitative mechanical analysis by nanoindentation on the major facets of the crystals shows that BF(2)dbm(Bu-t)(2) is soft and compliant with low values of elastic modulus, E, and hardness, H, confirming its superior suceptibility for plastic deformation, which is attributed to the presence of a multitude of slip systems in the crystal structure. In contrast, both BF(2)dbm(OMe)(2) and BF(2)dbmOMe are considerably stiffer and harder with comparable E and H, which are rationalized through analysis of the structural attributes such as the intermolecular interactions, slip systems and their relative orientation with respect to the indentation direction. As expected from the qualitative mechanical behaviour, prominent ML was observed in BF(2)dbm(Bu-t)(2), whereas BF(2)dbm(OMe)(2) exhibits only a moderate ML and BF(2)dbmOMe shows no detectable ML, all examined under identical conditions. These results confirm that the extent of ML in crystalline organic solid-state fluorophore materials can be correlated positively with the extent of plasticity (low recovery). In turn, they offer opportunities to design new and improved efficient ML materials using crystal engineering principles.

The paper reports effect of small ternary addition of In on the microstructure, mechanical property and oxidation behaviour of a near eutectic suction cast Nb-19.1 at-%Si-1.5 at-%In alloy. The observed microstructure consists of a combination of two kinds of lamellar structure. They are metal-intermetallic combinations of Nb-ss-beta-Nb5Si3 and Nb-ss-alpha-Nb5Si3 respectively having 40-60 nm lamellar spacings. The alloy gives compressive strength of 3 GPa and engineering strain of similar to 3% at room temperature. The composite structure also exhibits a large improvement in oxidation resistance at high temperature (1000 degrees C).

Binary and ternary blends of nylon-6/low density polyethylene (nylon-6/LDPE) and Nylon-6/LDPE/poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) were prepared by melt mixing. The blends exhibit two phase morphology with LDPE dispersed in the form of spherical domains in the nylon-6 matrix. The mechanical properties of the blends were measured by standard methods. It is shown that the use of the epoxy copolymer as a compatibilizer improves the impact strength of the blend as compared to nylon-6, which is attributed to better stress transfer across the interface due to the compatibilizer. The data for each mechanical property were also fitted into a best fit model equation and the method of steepest ascent was applied to arrive at the optimum composition of the blend for that property.

The electron beam welding technique was used to join Zr41Ti14Cu12Ni10Be23 bulk metallic glass (BMG) to crystalline pure Zr. Compositional, microstructural, and mechanical property variations across the welded interface were evaluated. It is shown that a crystalline layer develops close to the welding interface. Transmission electron microscopy of this layer indicates the crystalline phase to be tetragonal with lattice parameters close to that reported for Zr2Ni. However, the composition of this phase is different as it contains other alloying additions. The interface layer close to the bulk metallic glass side contains nanocrystalline Zr2Cu phase embedded in the glassy matrix. Nanoindentation experiments indicate that the hardness of the crystalline layer, although less than the bulk metallic glass, is more than the Zr itself. Commensurately, tensile tests indicate that the failure of the welded samples occurs at the Zr side rather than at the weld joint.

In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A356 and 6061 aluminum alloys were joined by friction stir welding at constant tool rotational rate with different tool-traversing speeds. Thermomechanical data of welding showed that increment in tool speed reduced the pseudo heat index and temperature at weld nugget (WN). On the other hand, volume of material within extrusion zone, strain rate, and Zenner Hollomon parameter were reduced with decrease in tool speed. Optical microstructure of WN exhibited nearly uniform dispersion of Si-rich particles, fine grain size of 6061 Al alloy, and disappearance of second phase within 6061 Al alloy. With enhancement in welding speed, matrix grain size became finer, yet size of Si-rich particles did not reduce incessantly. Size of Si-rich particles was governed by interaction time between tool and substrate. Mechanical property of WN was evaluated. It has been found that the maximum joint efficiency of 116% with respect to that of 6061 alloy was obtained at an intermediate tool-traversing speed, where matrix grain size was significantly fine and those of Si-rich particles were substantially small.
Correlations between mechanical and photoluminescence properties in Eu doped sodium bismuth titanate

Nanoindentation technique is utilized to examine mechanical property variation in Eu doped Na0.5Bi0.5 TiO3 (NBT). Doping levels of Eu in NBT is systematically varied. Dilute doping results in a linear reduction in both modulus and hardness. At higher concentrations, a recovery of the mechanical properties (to undoped NBT values) is observed. These experimental trends mirror variations in the optical emission intensities with Eu concentration. Observed trends are rationalized on the basis of a model, which hypothesizes phase segregation beyond a critical Eu doping level. Such segregation leads to the formation of pure NBT, nano-Eu saturated NBT, and nano-mixed Eu oxides in the microstructure. Pure NBT is optically inactive, while saturated Eu:NBT is a much better emitter when compared to europium oxide. Hence beyond the critical concentration, luminescence signal comes primarily from the saturated Eu:NBT phase. The model presented is supported by nanoindentation, and spectroscopic results. Computational models based on the phase-field method typically operate on a mesoscopic length scale and resolve structural changes of the material and furthermore provide valuable information about microstructure and mechanical property relations. An accurate calculation of the stresses and mechanical energy at the transition region is therefore indispensable. We derive a quantitative phase-field elasticity model based on force balance and Hadamard jump conditions at the interface. Comparing the simulated stress profiles calculated with Voigt/Taylor (Annalen der Physik 274(12):573, 1889), Reuss/Sachs (Z Angew Math Mech 9:49, 1929) and the proposed model with the theoretically predicted stress fields in a plate with a round inclusion under hydrostatic tension, we show the quantitative characteristics of the model. In order to validate the elastic contribution to the driving force for phase transition, we demonstrate the absence of excess energy, calculated by Durga et al. (Model Simul Mater Sci Eng 21(5):055018, 2013), in a one-dimensional equilibrium condition of serial and parallel material chains. To validate the driving force for systems with curved transition regions, we relate simulations to the Gibbs-Thompson equilibrium condition

We propose a self-regularized pseudo-time marching scheme to solve the ill-posed, nonlinear inverse problem associated with diffuse propagation of coherent light in a tissuelike object. In particular, in the context of diffuse correlation tomography (DCT), we consider the recovery of mechanical property distributions from partial and noisy boundary measurements of light intensity autocorrelation. We prove the existence of a minimizer for the Newton algorithm after establishing the existence of weak solutions for the forward equation of light amplitude autocorrelation and its Frechet derivative and adjoint. The asymptotic stability of the solution of the ordinary differential equation obtained through the introduction of the pseudo-time is also analyzed. We show that the asymptotic solution obtained through the pseudo-time marching converges to that optimal solution provided the Hessian of the forward equation is positive definite in the neighborhood of optimal solution. The superior noise tolerance and regularization-insensitive nature of pseudo-dynamic strategy are proved through numerical simulations in the context of both DCT and diffuse optical tomography. A hard roller under normal load is driven by the flat surface of a soft disc. Corrugations are generated on the disc when certain surface morphological, load, speed and mechanical property-oriented conditions are met. The evolutionary process of corrugation generation and the preconditions necessary for it are investigated morphologically and mechanically for four disc materials: mild steel, brass, PTFE and PMMA.

In this article, a single-phase, one-domain macroscopic model is developed for studying binary alloy solidification with moving equiaxed solid phase, along with the associated transport phenomena. In this model, issues such as thermosolutal convection, motion of solid phase relative to liquid and viscosity variations of the solid-liquid mixture with solid fraction in the mobile zone are taken into account. Using the model, the associated transport phenomena during solidification of Al-Cu alloys in a rectangular cavity are predicted. The results for temperature variation, segregation patterns, and eutectic fraction distribution are compared with data from in-house experiments. The model predictions compare well with the experimental results. To highlight the influence of solid phase movement on convection and final macrosegregation, the results of the current model are also compared with those obtained from the conventional solidification model with stationary solid phase. By including the independent movement of the solid phase into the fluid transport model, better predictions of macrosegregation, microstructure, and even shrinkage locations were obtained. Mechanical property prediction models based on microstructure will benefit from the improved accuracy of this model.

We demonstrate here that mesoporous tin dioxide (abbreviated M-SnO2) with a broad pore size distribution can be a prospective anode in lithium-ion batteries. M-SnO2 with pore size ranging between 2 and 7.5 nm was synthesized using a hydrothermal procedure involving two different surfactants of slightly different sizes, and characterized. The irreversible capacity loss that occurs during the first discharge and charge cycle is 890 mAh g(-1), which is smaller than the 1,010-mAh g(-1) loss recorded for mesoporous SnO2 (abbreviated S-SnO2) synthesized using a single surfactant. After 50 cycles, the discharge capacity of M-SnO2 (504 mAh g(-1)) is higher than that of S-SnO2 (401 mAh g(-1)) and solid nanoparticles of SnO2 (abbreviated nano-SnO2 < 4 mAh g(-1)) and nano-SnO2. Transmission electron microscopy revealed higher disorder in the pore arrangement in M-SnO2. This, in turn imparts lower stiffness to M-SnO2 (elastic modulus, E (R) a parts per thousand aEuro parts per thousand 14.5 GPa) vis-a-vis S-SnO2 (E (R) a parts per thousand aEuro parts per thousand 20.5 GPa), as obtained using the nanoindentation technique. Thus, the superior battery performance of M-SnO2 is attributed to its intrinsic material mechanical property. The fluidity of the internal microstructure of M-SnO2 resulted in a lower degree of aggregation of Sn particles compared to S-SnO2 and nano-SnO2 structural stabilization and long-term cyclability.

In this study, a detailed investigation on the effect of heat treatment on the microstructural characteristics, texture evolution and mechanical properties of Mg-(5.6Ti+2.5B(4)C)(BM) hybrid nanocomposite is presented. Optimised heat treatment parameters, namely, heat treatment temperature and heat treatment time, were first identified through grain size and microhardness measurements. Initially, heat treatment of composites was conducted at temperature range between 100 and 300 degrees C for 1 h. Based on optical microscopic analysis and microhardness measurements, it was evident that significant grain growth and reduction in microhardness occurred for temperatures > 200 degrees C. The cutoff temperature that caused significant grain growth/matrix softening was thus identified. Second, at constant temperature (200 degrees C), the effect of variation of heat treatment time was carried out (ranging between 1 and 5 h) so as to identify the range wherein increase in average grain size and reduction in microhardness occurred. Furthering the study, the effect of optimised heat treatment parameters (200 degrees C, 5 h) on the microstructural texture evolution and hence, on the tensile and compressive properties of the Mg-(5.6Ti+2.5B(4)C)(BM) hybrid nanocomposite was carried out. From electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis, it was identified that the optimised heat treatment resulted in recrystallisation and residual stress relaxation, as evident from the presence of similar to 87% strain free grains, when compared to that observed in the non-heat treated/as extruded condition (i.e. 2.2 times greater than in the as extruded condition). For the heat treated composite, under both tensile and compressive loads, a significant improvement in fracture strain values (similar to 60% increase) was observed when compared to that of the non-heat treated counterpart, with similar to 20% reduction in yield strength. Based on structure-property correlation, the change in mechanical characteristics is identified to be due to: (1) the presence of less stressed matrix/reinforcement interface due to the relief of residual stresses and (2) texture weakening due to matrix recrystallisation effects, both arising due to heat treatment.

Hexagonal Cu-2 Te has been synthesised by mechanical alloying from elemental powders. The milling time required for the synthesis is longer than that reported for other tellurides. The mechanical grinding of the bulk Cu2Te obtained by the melting route does not change the structure. Prolonged milling as well as grinding beyond 40 h lead to a decrease in grain size to nanometer level. The cold compaction of milled or ground powders exhibit much smaller Seebeck coefficient (thermopower). However, cold compaction of samples milled for longer time (>150 h) lead to the thermopower values close to that of the bulk indicating significant improvement of rheological properties at room temperature for powders milled for long times.

The spreadability of SAE-30 oil on Al-12 Si base (LM-13) alloy containing dispersed graphite particles about 50 μm average size in its matrix is found to be greater than on either LM-13 with no graphite or brass. It is also found that the spreadability on LM-13 base alloys increase with increasing volume of graphite dispersion in the matrix of these alloys. Further increases in the spreadability of oil on machined LM-13-graphite particle composite test surfaces occur if these are rubbed initially against control discs of either LM-13 or grey cast iron. The formation of a triboinduced graphite-rich layer, confirmed by esca, appears to be responsible for the improved oil spreadability on the rubbed test surfaces of LM-13 base alloys as compared to the as-machined test surfaces prior to rubbing. The triboinduced layer of graphite is apparently responsible for the observed reduction in the friction, wear and seizing tendency of triboelements made from aluminium alloy-graphite particle composites.
