In the present study, WC-12Co coatings were deposited by detonation-spraying technique using conventional and nanostructured WC-12Co feedstock at four different oxy/fuel ratios (OF ratio). The coatings exhibited the presence of phases like W2C and W due to the decarburization of the WC phase, and the proportions of these phases were higher in the nano WC-12Co coatings compared with conventional WC-12Co coatings. Coating hardness and fracture toughness were measured. The tribological performance of coatings was examined under dry sand rubber wheel abrasion wear, and solid particle erosion wear conditions. The mechanical and wear properties of coatings were influenced by degree of decarburization and more so in the case of nanostructured WC-Co coatings. The results indicate that the extent of decarburization has a substantial influence on the elastic modulus of the coating which in turn is related to the extent of intersplat cracking of the coating.

We discuss the inverse problem associated with the propagation of the field autocorrelation of light through a highly scattering object like tissue. In the first part of the work, we reconstructed the optical absorption coefficient mu(u) and particle diffusion coefficient D-B from simulated measurements which are integrals of a quantity computed from the measured intensity and intensity autocorrelation g(2)(tau) at the boundary. In the second part we recover the mean square displacement (MSD) distribution of particles in an inhomogeneous object from the sampled g(2)(tau) measure on the boundary. From the MSD, we compute the storage and loss moduli distributions in the object. We have devised computationally easy methods to construct the sensitivity matrices which are used in the iterative reconstruction algorithms for recovering these parameters from the measurements. The results of the reconstruction of mu(a), D-B, MSD and the viscoelastic parameters, which are presented, show reasonable good position and quantitative accuracy.

A new biobased composite was developed by adding soy flour (SF) to polypropylene (PP). This composite shows an enhanced tensile strength and modulus but decrease in elongation at break. The compatibilizer (coupling agent) appears to have a synergistic effect on tensile strength. The presence of the compatibilizer improves the dispersion of SF in the PP matrix. The addition of glycerol plasticizer to the composite improves the processability resulting in improved performance, as compared to composites without glycerol plasticizer. The optimal compatibilizer content appears to be 6%.

Lignin was graft copolymerized with methyl methacrylate using manganic pyrophosphate as initiator. This modified lignin was then blended (up to 50 wt%) with low density polyethylene (LDPE) using a small quantity of poly[ethylene-co-(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PEGMA) compatibilizer. The mechanical properties of the blend were substantially improved by using modified lignin in contrast to untreated lignin. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed loss of crystallinity of the LDPE phase owing to the interaction between the blend components. Thermogravimetric analysis showed higher thermal stability of modified lignin in the domain of blend processing. This suggested that there is scope for useful utilization of lignin, which could also lead to the development of eco-friendly products. (c) 2005 Society of Chemical Industry.

In this study, biodegradable blend of Poly (Ethylene-co-Vinyl Acetate) (EVA) and Ethyl Cellulose (EC) were prepared. Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer was used as an interfacial compatibilizer to enhance adhesion between EVA and EC. The melt blended compatibilized biocomposites were examined for mechanical and thermal properties as per the ASTM standards. It has been found that the EC has a reinforcing effect on EVA leading to enhanced tensile strength and also impart biodegradability. Thus, a high loading of 50% EC could be added without compromising Much on the mechanical properties. Analysis of the tensile data using predictive theories showed an enhanced interaction of the dispersed phase (EC) and the matrix (EVA). The compatibilizing effects of EVOH on these blends were confirmed by the significant improvement in the mechanical properties comparable with neat EVA as also observed by SEM microscopy. The TGA thermograms exhibits two-stage degradation and as EC content increases, the onset temperature for thermal degradation reduces. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolyurethanes of hydroxy terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and ISRO–Polyol (ISPO), an indigenously developed castor-oil based polyol, have been prepared using toluene diiso-cyanate and hexamethylenediisocyanate. The mechanical strength and swelling characteristics of the copolyurethanes cured with trimethylol propane and triethanolamine have been studied to evolve improved solid propellant binders. By varying the ratios of the two hydroxy pre-polymers, chain extenders, and crosslinkers, copolyurethanes having a wide range of tensile strength and elongation could be obtained. Many of these systems are desirable for their use as propellant binders. The results have been explained in terms of the measured crosslink densities and other swelling properties. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

We demonstrate quantitative optical property and elastic property imaging from ultrasound assisted optical tomography data. The measurements, which are modulation depth M and phase phi of the speckle pattern, are shown to be sensitively dependent on these properties of the object in the insonified focal region of the ultrasound (US) transducer. We demonstrate that Young's modulus (E) can be recovered from the resonance observed in M versus omega (the US frequency) plots and optical absorption (mu(a)) and scattering (mu(s)) coefficients from the measured differential phase changes. All experimental observations are verified also using Monte Carlo simulations. (c) 2012 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). DOI: 10.1117/1.JBO.17.10.101507]

The paper reports the effect of addition of small amount of Mg on the mechanical and oxidation properties of Nb-Nb3Si eutectic composites in Nb-Si system under the condition of suction casting. Mg addition increases the volume fraction of primary dendrites of Nb solid solution. This phase contains significant amount of strengthening precipitates. Two different precipitates are identified. The large plate shaped precipitates are that of hcp phase, while fine coherent precipitates have the structure similar to recently identified delta-Nb11Si2 phase. The Mg addition improves both the strength and ductility of the composite at room temperature (similar to 1.4 GPa and similar to 5% engineering strain) as well as at 700 degrees C(similar to 1.2 GPa and similar to 7% engineering strain). The presence of Mg results in a complex barrier layer which significantly increases the oxidation resistance up to a temperature of at least 1000 degrees C. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. The paper reports effect of small ternary addition of In on the microstructure, mechanical property and oxidation behaviour of a near eutectic suction cast Nb-19.1 at-%Si-1.5 at-%In alloy. The observed microstructure consists of a combination of two kinds of lamellar structure. They are metal-intermetallic combinations of Nb-ss-beta-Nb5Si3 and Nb-ss-alpha-Nb5Si3 respectively having 40-60 nm lamellar spacings. The alloy gives compressive strength of 3 GPa and engineering strain of similar to 3% at room temperature. The composite structure also exhibits a large improvement in oxidation resistance at high temperature (1000 degrees C).

Glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) was cured through click chemistry by reaction of the azide group with bispropargyl succinate (BPS) through a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction to form 1,2,3-triazole network. The properties of GAP-based triazole networks are compared with the urethane cured GAP-systems. The glass transition temperature (T-g), tensile strength, and modulus of the system increased with crosslink density, controlled by the azide to propargyl ratio. The triazole incorporation has a higher T-g in comparison to the GAP-urethane system (T-g-20 degrees C) and the networks exhibit biphasic transitions at 61 and 88 degrees C. The triazole curing was studied using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and the related kinetic parameters were helpful for predicting the cure profile at a given temperature. Density functional theory (DFT)-based theoretical calculations implied marginal preference for 1,5-addition over 1,4-addition for the cycloaddition between azide and propargyl group. Thermogravimetic analysis (TG) showed better thermal stability for the GAP-triazole and the mechanism of decomposition was elucidated using pyrolysis GC-MS studies. The higher heat of exothermic decomposition of triazole adduct (418kJmol(-1)) against that of azide (317kJmol(-1)) and better mechanical properties of the GAP-triazole renders it a better propellant binder than the GAP-urethane system.

Silicene, a graphene analogue of silicon, has been generating immense interest due to its potential for applications in miniaturized devices. Unlike planar graphene, silicene prefers a buckled structure. Here we explore the possibility of stabilizing the planar form of silicene by Ni doping using first principles density functional theory based calculations. It is found that planar as well as buckled structure is stable for Ni-doped silicene, but the buckled sheet has slightly lower total energy. The planar silicene sheet has unstable phonon modes. A comparative study of the mechanical properties reveals that the in-plane stiffness of both the pristine and the doped planar silicene is higher compared to that of the buckled silicene. This suggests that planar silicene is mechanically more robust. Electronic structure calculations of the planar and buckled Ni-doped silicene show that the energy bands at the Dirac point transform from linear behavior to parabolic dispersion. Furthermore, we extend our study to Ge and Sn sheets that are also stable and the trends of comparable mechanical stability of the planar and buckled phases remain the same.
Correlations between mechanical and photoluminescence properties in Eu doped sodium bismuth titanate

Nanoindentation technique is utilized to examine mechanical property variation in Eu doped Na0.5Bi0.5 TiO3 (NBT). Doping levels of Eu in NBT is systematically varied. Dilute doping results in a linear reduction in both modulus and hardness. At higher concentrations, a recovery of the mechanical properties (to undoped NBT values) is observed. These experimental trends mirror variations in the optical emission intensities with Eu concentration. Observed trends are rationalized on the basis of a model, which hypothesizes phase segregation beyond a critical Eu doping level. Such segregation leads to the formation of pure NBT, nano-Eu saturated NBT, and nano-mixed Eu oxides in the microstructure. Pure NBT is optically inactive, while saturated Eu:NBT is a much better emitter when compared to europium oxide. Hence beyond the critical concentration, luminescence signal comes primarily from the saturated Eu:NBT phase. The model presented is supported by nanoindentation, and spectroscopic results. Conducting polymers have the combined advantages of metal conductivity with ease in processing and biocompatibility; making them extremely versatile for biosensor and tissue engineering applications. However, the inherent brittle property of conducting polymers limits their direct use in such applications which generally warrant soft and flexible material responses. Addition of fillers increases the material compliance, but is achieved at the cost of reduced electrical conductivity. To retain suitable conductivity without compromising the mechanical properties, we fabricate an electroactive blend (dPEDOT) using low grade PEDOT: PSS as the base conducting polymer with polyvinyl alcohol as filler and glycerol as a dopant. Bulk dPEDOT films show a thermally stable response till 110 degrees C with over seven fold increase in room temperature conductivity as compared to 0.002 S cm(-1) for pristine PEDOT: PSS. We characterize the nonlinear stress-strain response of dPEDOT, well described using a Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic model, and report elastomer-like moduli with ductility similar to fives times its original length. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows constant storage moduli over a large range of frequencies with corresponding linear increase in tan(delta). We relate the enhanced performance of dPEDOT with the underlying structural constituents using FTIR and AFM microscopy. These data demonstrate specific interactions between individual components of dPEDOT, and their effect on surface topography and material properties. Finally, we show biocompatibility of dPEDOT using fibroblasts that have comparable cell morphologies and viability as the control, which make dPEDOT attractive as a biomaterial.

Using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have studied the mechanical properties of ZnS/CdS core/shell nanowires. Our results show that the coating of a few-atomic-layer CdS shell on the ZnS nanowire leads to a significant change in the stiffness of the core/shell nanowires compared to the stiffness of pure ZnS nanowires. The binding energy between the core and shell region decreases due to the lattice mismatch at the core-shell interface. This reduction in binding energy plays an important role in determining the stiffness of a core/shell nanowire. We have also investigated the effects of the shell on the thermal conductivity and melting behavior of the nanowires.

Poly(vinyl butyral) - MMT clay nanocomposites were synthesized in situ with three different degrees of acetalization and with varying clay content for each vinyl butyral polymer ratio. The clay nano-platelet galleries were expanded, as determined by X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis. The glass transition temperature of the polymer nanocomposites were found to be similar to 56 degrees C and similar to 52 degrees C for the neat polymer and the 4% clay loaded samples, respectively. The 4 wt% clay loaded film showed higher strength and low strain to failure. The dynamic mechanical analysis also confirmed the improved stability of the matrix. The matrix with 0.5 butyral to alcohol ratio for 4 wt% clay exhibited good water vapor transmission compared to all other compositions. The encapsulated devices with 2.5 and 4 wt% clay loaded films increases the device life time and the efficiencies of these films were 50% higher than their encapsulated pristine polymer films.
