A series of bimetallic acetylacetonate (acac) complexes, AlxCr1-x(acac)(3), 0 <= x <= 1, have been synthesized for application as precursors for the CVD Of Substituted oxides, such as (AlxCr1-x)(2)O-3. Detailed thermal analysis has been carried out on these complexes, which are solids that begin subliming at low temperatures, followed by melting, and evaporation from the melt. By applying the Langmuir equation to differential thermogravimetry data, the vapour pressure of these complexes is estimated. From these vapour pressure data, the distinctly different enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation are calculated, using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Such a determination of both the enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation of complexes, which sublime and melt congruently, does not appear to have been reported in the literature to date.

The observation that N-carbamoylputrescine is quantitatively excluded on O-(carboxymethyl)-cellulose columns with simultaneous retention of putrescine and agmatine has been utilized to develop a sensitive radiometric assay for putrescine transcarbamoylase and a colorimetric assay for agmatine iminohydrolase. A simple procedure for obtaining bulk amounts of pure synthetic N-carbamoylputrescine by separation from putrescine and dicarbamoylputrescine on Dowex 50 (Na+) resin is described.

A hot billet in contact with relatively cold dies undergoes rapid cooling in the forging operation. This may give rise to unfilled cavities, poor surface finish and stalling of the press. A knowledge of billet-die temperatures as a function of time is therefore essential for process design. A computer code using finite difference method is written to estimate such temperature histories and validated by comparing the predicted cooling of an integral die-billet configuration with that obtained experimentally.

The purpose of the work described here has been (a) to obtain some evidence on catalase (an oxidative enzyme) and protease, urease and phosphatase (hydrolytic enzymes) in sewage, activated sludge and septic tank sludge, and (b) to use this evidence, as a new approach, to find out the relationship between the main groups of the micro-organisms (bacteria and protozoa) and their relative influence on the purification process. To make a rapid assessment of the enzyme activities in these systems in the course of three weeks, as an experimental measure, rat tissues were added, which might serve as an additional or a ‘shock’ load of organic matter to follow broadly the development of bacteria and protozoa and the changes in the enzyme activities in the different systems. A control system with sewage alone was also run. The results showed that the initial decomposition of the fresh organic matter added to sewage and sludges was almost entirely due to bacterial activity and the later oxidative changes and removal of the suspended solids, including the bacteria, were largely due to the protozoa, such as Epistylis articulata. Analysis of the enzyme activities in the different materials showed, among other things, that the activated sludge, with its mized bacteria, protozoa and other organisms, as a whole, contained about twenty times more protease activity than an equivalent amount of the protozoan E. articulata, and that this protozoan contained five times more catalase activity than the activated sludge. The significance of these observations is discussed.

The comparative role of luteinizing hormone (LH) in maintaining pregnancy and histamine-induced decidualization in the rat was studied with the help of a new system, wherein the above two states could be brought about simultaneously in the same animal, but in different uterine horns. Specific and well-characterized LH antiserum, administered daily, both during the pre-trauma (days 1-4) and post-trauma (days 5-8) periods, resulted in the termination of pregnancy and inhibition of decidualization. This antiserum effect could be reversed by suitable steroid therapy. Results suggest that the antiserum blockade of ovarian steroidogenesis continued even after cessation of its treatment. Early pregnancy and decidualization seem directly comparable in that both are dependent upon LH to stimulate the ovarian synthesis of much-needed progesterone and estrogen.

We studied the mating behaviour of the primi-tively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata and the factors that may influence sperm transfer. By introducing a male and a female R. marginata into ventilated transparent plastic boxes, we were able to observe mating behaviour, and it involved mounting and short or long conjugation of the wasps. Dissection of female wasps after the observation indicated that long conjugation is a good behavioural predictor of sperm transfer. This finding makes it possible to obtain mated females without dissecting them every time. We tested the effect of age, season, relatedness, body size and female's ovarian status on mating. Under laboratory conditions, mating success declined rapidly below and above the ages 5-20 days. Within this age range mating success was significantly low in December compared to other months tested. There was no nestmate discrimination, and there was no influence of male and female body size or of the ovarian state of the female on the probability of sperm transfer.

Four new 5-aminoisophthalates of cobalt and nickel have been prepared employing hydro/solvothermal methods: [Co2(C8H5NO4)2(C4H4N2)(H2O)2]·3H2O (I), [Ni2(C8H5NO4)2(C4H4N2)(H2O)2]·3H2O (II), [Co2(H2O)(μ3-OH)2(C8H5NO4)] (III), and [Ni2(H2O)(μ3-OH)2(C8H5NO4)] (IV). Compounds I and II are isostructural, having anion-deficient CdCl2 related layers bridged by a pyrazine ligand, giving rise to a bilayer arrangement. Compounds III and IV have one-dimensional M−O(H)−M chains connected by the 5-aminoisophthalate units forming a three-dimensional structure. The coordinated as well as the lattice water molecules of I and II could be removed and inserted by simple heating−cooling cycles under the atmospheric conditions. The removal of the coordinated water molecule is accompanied by changes in the coordination environment around the M2+ (M = Co, Ni) and color of the samples (purple to blue, Co; green to dark yellow, Ni). This change has been examined by a variety of techniques that include in situ single crystal to single crystal transformation studies and in situ IR and UV−vis spectroscopic studies. Magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic behavior in I and II, a field-induced magnetism in III, and a canted antiferromagnetic behavior in IV.

The cell suspension cultures, established from the friable callus which was risen from the nodal segments of Dioscorea bulbifera L. in Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with indole-3-butryic acid (20 mg L- 1), was examined for cell growth in MS medium fed with cholesterol (50 mg L- 1 and 100 mg L- 1) after 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 days of culture. The growth index of the cell suspension culture on the 8th day was 1.2 and gradually inclined to 1.9 on the 16th day and remained the same at the 18th day. There is no marked difference in the cell growth of cholesterol-treated and control cell suspension culture. The maximum accumulation of diosgenin was noticed on the 14th day in control and cholesterol-treated cell suspension culture and immobilised cell cultures. The highest concentration of diosgenin, 2.94% and 2.14% dry weight, was obtained in immobilised cell culture and cell suspension culture treated with 100 mg L- 1 cholesterol, respectively.

Biogeochemical and hydrological cycles are currently studied on a small experimental forested watershed (4.5 km(2)) in the semi-humid South India. This paper presents one of the first data referring to the distribution and dynamics of a widespread red soil (Ferralsols and Chromic Luvisols) and black soil (Vertisols and Vertic intergrades) cover, and its possible relationship with the recent development of the erosion process. The soil map was established from the observation of isolated soil profiles and toposequences, and surveys of soil electromagnetic conductivity (EM31, Geonics Ltd), lithology and vegetation. The distribution of the different parts of the soil cover in relation to each other was used to establish the dynamics and chronological order of formation. Results indicate that both topography and lithology (gneiss and amphibolite) have influenced the distribution of the soils. At the downslope, the following parts of the soil covers were distinguished: i) red soil system, ii) black soil system, iii) bleached horizon at the top of the black soil and iv) bleached sandy saprolite at the base of the black soil. The red soil is currently transforming into black soil and the transformation front is moving upslope. In the bottom part of the slope, the chronology appears to be the following: black soil > bleached horizon at the top of the black soil > streambed > bleached horizon below the black soil. It appears that the development of the drainage network is a recent process, which was guided by the presence of thin black soil with a vertic horizon less than 2 in deep. Three distinctive types of erosional landforms have been identified: 1. rotational slips (Type 1); 2. a seepage erosion (Type 2) at the top of the black soil profile; 3. A combination of earthflow and sliding in the non-cohesive saprolite of the gneiss occurs at midslope (Type 3). Types 1 and 2 erosion are mainly occurring downslope and are always located at the intersection between the streambed and the red soil-black soil contact. Neutron probe monitoring, along an area vulnerable to erosion types 1 and 2, indicates that rotational slips are caused by a temporary watertable at the base of the black soil and within the sandy bleached saprolite, which behaves as a plane of weakness. The watertable is induced by the ephemeral watercourse. Erosion type 2 is caused by seepage of a perched watertable, which occurs after swelling and closing of the cracks of the vertic clay horizon and within a light textured and bleached horizon at the top of black soil. Type 3 erosion is not related to the red soil-black soil system but is caused by the seasonal seepage of saturated throughflow in the sandy saprolite of the gneiss occurring at midslope. A detailed understanding of the mode of packing patterns that leads to the gelation of low molecular mass gelators derived from bile acid esters was carried out using solid state NMR along with complementary techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Solid state C-13{H-1} cross polarization (CP) magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR of the low molecularmass gel in its native state was recorded for the first time. A close resemblance in the packing patterns of the gel, xerogel and bulk solid states was revealed upon comparing their C-13{H-1} CPMAS NMR spectral pattern. A doublet resonance pattern of C-13 signals in C-13{H-1}CPMAS NMR spectra were observed for the gelator molecules, whereas the non-gelators showed simple singlet resonance or resulted inthe formation of inclusion complexes/solvates. PXRD patterns revealed a close isomorphous nature of the gelators indicating the similarity in the mode of the packing pattern in their solid state. Direct imaging of the evolution of nanofibers (sol-gel transition) was carried out using POM, which proved the presence of self-assembled fibrillar networks (SAFINs) in the gel. Finally powder X-ray structure determination revealed the presence of two non-equivalent molecules in an asymmetric unit which is responsible for the doublet resonance pattern in the solid state NMR spectra.

In this brief, we present a new circuit technique to generate the sigmoid neuron activation function (NAF) and its derivative (DNAF). The circuit makes use of transistor asymmetry in cross-coupled differential pair to obtain the derivative. The asymmetry is introduced through external control signal, as and when required. This results in the efficient utilization of the hard-ware by realizing NAF and DNAF using the same building blocks. The operation of the circuit is presented in the subthreshold region for ultra low-power applications. The proposed circuit has been experimentally prototyped and characterized as a proof of concept on the 1.5-mum AMI technology.

Complex typeN-linked oligosaccharides derived from fetuin, fibrinogen and thyroglobulin were coupled to acetyltyrosine affording a series of neoglycopeptides with retention of terminal structures and the beta-anomeric configuration of their reducing endN-acetylglycosamine residue. The neoglycopeptides thus synthesized could be labelled to high specific activities with125I in the aromatic side chain of tyrosine. Analysis of the fate of these neoglycopeptides in conjunction with inhibition with asialofetuin and oligosaccharides of defined structure in micein vivo revealed the uptake of galactosylated biantennary compound by kidneys, in addition to the known itinerary of triantennary galactosylated complex oligosaccharide from fetuin to liver and the galactosylated biantennary chain with fucosylation in the core to bone marrows. On the other hand, the agalacto, aglucosamino biantennary chains with and without fucosylation in the core region are taken up by submaxillary glands while the conserved trimannosyl core with fucose is primarily concentrated in stomach tissue. These studies thus define new routes for the uptake of complexN-linked glycans and also subserve to identify lectins presumably involved in their recognition.

A miniature furnace suitable for routine collection of x-ray data up to 1000°C from single crystals on the Hilger and Watts linear diffractometer, without restricting the normally allowed region of reciprocal space on the diffractometer, is described. The crystal is heated primarily by radiation from a surrounding current-heated, stationary platinum coil wound on a silica bracket. The coil is split at its middle to provide a 4 mm gap for crystal mounting and x-irradiation. The crystal, mounted on a standard goniometer head, can be rotated and centred freely, as in the room temperature case. There is no need for any radiation shields or water-cooling arrangement. Investigations up to 1500°C are possible with slight modifications of the furnace.

An interesting interaction between glyoxylate and cystein takes place in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) to form a product which is resistant to hydrolysis at ordinary temperatures. The reaction product is broken up by acid hydrolysis at elevated temperatures under controlled conditions, giving a quantitive yield of glyoxylate. Other keto acids, such as α-ketoglutarate, pyruvate and oxaloacetate, do not interact with cysteine under similar conditions. Methods based on these findings are described for(a) direct estimation of other keto acids in the presence of glyoxylate, and (b) assay of isocitritase and glyoxylate transaminase.
