A differential pulse polarographic (DPP) method based on the adsorption catalytic current in a medium containing chlorate and 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) is suggested for the determination of molybdenum(VI). Experimental conditions such as pH and the composition of supporting electrolyte have been optimized to get a linear calibration graph at trace levels of Mo(VI). The sensitivity for molybdenum can be considerably enhanced by this method. The influence of possible interferences on the catalytic current has been investigated. The sensitivity of the method is compared with those obtained for other DPP methods for molybdenum. A detection limit of 1.0 x 10(-8) mol/L has been found.

A solvent-free synthesis of alpha-aminonitriles and beta-nitroamines by oxidative cross-dehydrogenative coupling under aerobic condition is reported. A catalytic amount of molybdenum(VI) acetylacetonoate was found to catalyze cyanation of tertiary amines to form alpha-aminonitriles, whereas vanadium pentoxide was found to promote aza-Henry reaction to furnish beta-nitroamines. Both of these environmentally benign reactions are performed in the absence of solvents using molecular oxygen as an oxidant.

The reactions of (amino)spirocyclotriphosphazenes, N3P3(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2NH) (1) and N3P3(NMe2)4(NHCH2CH2CH2NH) (2) with molybdenum- and tungsten-hexacarbonyls give complexes of the type [M(CO)4(L)] (L = 1 or 2) in which the phosphazenes act as bidentate chelating ligands via one of the phosphazene ring nitrogen atoms and one of the nitrogen atoms of the diaminoalkane moiety.

The reaction of the benzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (H2L) with MoO2(acac)(2)] proceeds smoothly in refluxing ethanol to afford an orange complex MoO2L(C2H5OH)] (1). The substrate binding capacity of 1 has been demonstrated by the formation and isolation of two mononuclear MoO2L(Q)] {where Q = imidazole (2a) and 1-methylimidazole (2b)} and one dinuclear (MoO2L)(2)(Q)] {Q = 4,4'-bipyridine (3)} mixed-ligand oxomolybdenum complex. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic and spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis and NMR) measurements. The molecular structures of all the oxomolybdenum(VI) complexes (1, 2a, 2b and 3) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In each complex, the dianionic planar ligand is coordinated to the metal centre via one enolate oxygen, one phenolate oxygen and an azomethine nitrogen atom. The complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The minimum inhibitory concentration of these complexes and their antibacterial activity indicates that compounds 2a and 2b are potential lead molecules for drug designing. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of molybdenum in industrial materials has been developed using the leaf extract of Syzygium jambolanum DC based on the reaction of Mo (VI) at pH 7.0 to produce an orange-yellow complex with an absorption maximum at 426 nm. The molar absorptivity of the complex is 4.27 x 10(4) l mol(-1) cm(-1) and the absorbance, is linear in the range 0.05-0.8 ppm. Sandell sensitivity coefficient was found to be 2.25 x 10(-3) mu g/cm(2). The method is ten times more sensitive than the aqueous thiocyanate system. It has been applied successfully in micronutrient fertilizer, artificial freshwater and sea-water analyses.

The electronic structure of group II-VI semiconductors in the stable wurtzite form is analyzed using state-of-the-art ab initio approaches to extract a simple and chemically transparent tight-binding model. This model can be used to understand the variation in the bandgap with size, for nanoclusters of these compounds. Results complement similar information already available for same systems in the zinc blende structure. A comparison with all available experimental data on quantum size effects in group II-VI semiconductor nanoclusters establishes a remarkable agreement between theory and experiment in both structure types, thereby verifying the predictive ability of our approach. The significant dependence of the quantum size effect on the structure type suggests that the experimental bandgap change at a given size compared to the bulk bandgap, may be used to indicate the structural form of the nanoclusters, particularly in the small size limit, where broadening of diffraction features often make it difficult to unambiguously determine the structure.

Chemical shifts in the K-absorption edges, AE, of a series of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum compounds have been investigated. The AE values in a given series vary in the same direction as the metal-core-level binding energies obtained from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The AI3 values are related to the effective atomic charge of the metal by a parabolic relation. In the case of molybdenum compounds, the chemical shifts of the K, emission lines vary in the same manner as M.

While Mo in the Co-Mo/y-A1203 hydrodesulfurization catalyst is present as a sulfidic species similar to MoS2, Co shows two types of coordination, one with six sulfurs (but not a bulk sulfide) and the other with four oxygens. The significance of such species is discussed. In addition to an additive relation of the EXAFS function and the residual spectra, the ratio of amplitude terms of the catalyst and the model system has been employed in the analysis.

Conformational energy calculations were carried out on penicillin α-and Β-sulfoxides and δ2- and δ3-cephalosporins, in order to identify the structural features governing their biological activity. Results on penicillin Β-sulfoxide indicated that in its favoured conformation, the orientation of the aminoacyl group was different from the one required for biological activity. Penicillin α sulfoxide, like penicillin sulfide, favoured two conformations of nearly equal energies, but separated by a much higher energy barrier. The reduced activity of the sulfoxides despite the nonplanarity of their lactam peptide indicated that the orientations of the aminoacyl and carboxyl groups might also govern biological activity. δ3-cephalosporins favoured two conformations of nearly equal energies, whereas δ2-cephalosporins favoured only one conformation. The lactam peptide was moderately nonplanÄr in the former, but nearly planar in the latter. The differences in the.preferred orientations of the carboxyl group between penicillins and cephalosporins were correlated with the resistance of cephalosporins to penicillinases.

Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) has been deposited onto single-crystal p-type silicon by neutralized ion-beam sputter techniques. The results indicate that the diode behavior is a function of oxygen partial pressure during the reactive sputtering. Film thickness, deposition rate, index of refraction, resistivity, and integrated transmission have been measured under AM1 illumination. It appears that thin films of MoO3 could serve as an n-type transparent semiconductor for photovoltaic applications. Applied Physics Letters is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

Molybdenum oxide films (MoO3) were deposited on glass and crystalline silicon substrates by sputtering of molybdenum target under various oxygen partial pressures in the range 8 × 10−5–8 × 10−4 mbar and at a fixed substrate temperature of 473 K employing dc magnetron sputtering technique. The influence of oxygen partial pressure on the composition stoichiometry, chemical binding configuration, crystallographic structure and electrical and optical properties was systematically studied. X-ray photoelectron spectra of the films formed at 8 × 10−5 mbar showed the presence of Mo6+ and Mo5+ oxidation states of MoO3 and MoO3−x. The films deposited at oxygen partial pressure of 2 × 10−4 mbar showed Mo6+ oxidation state indicating the films were nearly stoichiometric. It was also confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic studies. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the films formed at oxygen partial pressure of 2 × 10−4 mbar showed the presence of (0 k 0) reflections indicated the layered structure of α-phase MoO3. The electrical conductivity of the films decreased from 3.6 × 10−5 to 1.6 × 10−6 Ω−1 cm−1, the optical band gap of the films increased from 2.93 to 3.26 eV and the refractive index increased from 2.02 to 2.13 with the increase of oxygen partial pressure from 8 × 10−5 to 8 × 10−4 mbar, respectively.
