By choosing appropriate microemulsion systems, hexagonal cobalt (Co) and cobalt-nickel (1:1) alloy nanoparticles have been obtained with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a cationic surfactant at 500 degrees C. This method thus stabilizes the hcp cobalt even at sizes (<10 nm) at which normally fcc cobalt is predicted to be stable. On annealing the hcp cobalt nanoparticles in H-2 at 700 degrees C we could transform them to fcc cobalt nanoparticles. Microscopy studies show the formation of spherical nanoparticles of hexagonal and cubic forms of cobalt and Co-Ni (1:1) alloy nanoparticles with the average size of 4, 8 and 20 nm, respectively. Electrochemical studies show that the catalytic property towards oxygen evolution is dependent on the applied voltage. At low voltage (less than 0.65 V) the Co (hexagonal) nanoparticles are superior to the alloy (Co-Ni) nanoparticles while above this voltage the alloy nanoparticles are more efficient catalysts. The nanoparticles of cobalt (hcp and fcc) and alloy (Co-Ni) nanoparticles show ferromagnetism. The saturation magnetization of Co-Ni nanoparticles is reduced compared to the bulk possibly due to surface oxidation.

Layered LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, which is isostructural to LiCoO2, is considered as a potential cathode material. A layer of carbon coated on the particles improves the electrode performance, Which is attributed to an increase of the grain connectivity and also to protection of metal oxide from chemical reaction. The present work involves in situ synthesis of carbon-coated submicrometer-sized particles of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 in an inverse microemulsion medium in the presence of glucose. The precursor obtained from the reaction is heated in air at 900 degrees C for 6 h to get crystalline LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2. The carbon coating is found to impart porosity as well as higher surface area in relation to bare samples of the compound. The electrochemical characterization studies provide that carbon-coated LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 samples exhibit improved rate capability and cycling performance. The carbon coatings are shown to suppress the capacity fade, which is normally observed for the bare compound. Impedance spectroscopy data provide additional evidence for the beneficial effect of a carbon coating on LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 particles.

α-Manganese dioxide is synthesized in a microemulsion medium by a redox reaction between KMnO4 and MnSO4 in presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate as a surface active agent. The morphology of MnO2 resembles nanopetals, which are spread parallel to the field. The material is further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area. Supercapacitance property of α-MnO2 nanopetals is studied by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling. High values of specific capacitance are obtained.

Nanoparticle synthesis in a microemulsion route is typically controlled by changing the water to surfactant ratio, concentration of precursors, and/or concentration of micelles. The experiments carried out in this work with chloroauric acid and hydrazine hydrate as precursors in water/AOT-Brij30/isooctane microemulsions show that the reagent addition rate can also be used to tune the size of stable spherical gold nanoparticles to some extent. The particle size goes through a minimum with variation in feed addition rate. The increase in particle size with an increase in reaction temperature is in agreement with an earlier report. A population balance model is used to interpret the experimental findings. The reduced extent of nucleation at low feed addition rates and suppression of nucleation due to the finite rate of mixing at higher addition rates produce a minimum in particle size. The increase in particle size at higher reaction temperatures is explained through an increase in fusion efficiency of micelles which dissipates supersaturation; increase in solubility is shown to play an insignificant role. The moderate polydispersity of the synthesized particles is due to the continued nucleation and growth of particles. The polydispersity of micelle sizes by itself plays a minor role.

Lithium-rich manganese oxide (Li2MnO3) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing Pluronic acid (P123) as a soft template and studied as a positive electrode material. The as-prepared sample possesses good crystalline structure with a broadly distributed mesoporosity but low surface area. As expected, cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge data indicate poor electrochemical activity. However, the sample gains surface area with narrowly distributed mesoporosity and also electrochemical activity after treating in 4 M H2SO4. A discharge capacity of about 160 mAh g(-1) is obtained. When the acid-treated sample is heated at 300 A degrees C, the resulting porous sample with a large surface area and dual porosity provides a discharge capacity of 240 mAh g(-1). The rate capability study suggests that the sample provides about 150 mAh g(-1) at a specific discharge current of 1.25 A g(-1). Although the cycling stability is poor, the high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the material.

A porous layered composite of Li2MnO3 and LiMn0.35Ni0.55Fe0.1O2 (composition:Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.22Fe0.04O2) is prepared by inverse microemulsion method and studied as a positive electrode material. The precursor is heated at several temperatures between 500 and 900 degrees C. The X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy studies suggested that well crystalline submicronsized particles are obtained. The product samples possess mesoporosity with broadly distributed pores around 10 similar to 50 nm diameter. Pore volume and surface area decrease by increasing the temperature of preparation. However, the electrochemical activity of the composite samples increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity values of the samples prepared at 900 degrees C are about 186 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 25 mA g(-1) with an excellent cycling stability. The composite sample also possesses high rate capability. The high rate capability is attributed to the porous nature of the material. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

MnO2 is currently under extensive investigations for its capacitance properties. MnO2 crystallizes into several crystallographic structures, namely, α, β, γ, δ, and λ structures. Because these structures differ in the way MnO6 octahedra are interlinked, they possess tunnels or interlayers with gaps of different magnitudes. Because capacitance properties are due to tercalation/deintercalation of protons or cations in MnO2, only some crystallographic structures, which possess sufficient gaps to accommodate these ions, are expected to be useful for capacitance studies. In order to examine the dependence of capacitance on crystal structure, the present study involves preparation of these various crystal phases of MnO2 in nanodimensions and to evaluate their capacitance properties. Results of α-MnO2 prepared by a microemulsion route (α-MnO2(m)) are also used for comparison. Spherical particles of about 50 nm, nanorods of 30−50 nm in diameter, or interlocked fibers of 10−20 nm in diameters are formed, which depend on the crystal structure and the method of preparation. The specific capacitance (SC) measured for MnO2 is found to depend strongly on the crystallographic structure, and it decreases in the following order: α(m) > α δ > γ > λ > β. A SC value of 297 F g-1 is obtained for α-MnO2(m), whereas it is 9 F g-1 for β-MnO2. A wide (4.6 Å) tunnel size and large surface area of α-MnO2(m) are ascribed as favorable factors for its high SC. A large interlayer separation (7 Å) also facilitates insertion of cations in δ-MnO2 resulting in a SC close to 236 F g-1. A narrow tunnel size (1.89 Å) does not allow intercalation of cations into β-MnO2. As a result, it provides a very small SC.

The temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and a closed-loop coexistence curve are obtained, via Monte Carlo simulations, in the water surfactant limit of a two-dimensional version of a statistical mechanical model for micro-emulsions, The CMC and the coexistence curve reproduce various experimental trends as functions of the couplings. In the oil-surfactant limit, there is a conventional coexistence cure with an upper consolute point that allows for a region of three-phase coexistence between oil-rich, water-rich and microemulsion phases.

The reactions of p-nitrophenyl alkanoate esters with dialkylaminopyridine (DAAP) and its related mono- and di-anionic water-soluble derivatives have been studied separately in three different microemulsion (ME) media. These were (a) oil-in-water ME (O/W), (b) water-in-oil ME (W/O) and (c) a bicontinuous ME, where oil and water are in nearly comparable amounts. All the ME systems were stabilized by cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) and butanol as a cosurfactant. The second-order rate constants (k(2)) in the microemulsion media were also determined : over a phase volume (phi) of approximately 0.13-0.46. In order to explain the contribution of effective concentration of the nucleophiles in the aqueous pseudophase, corrected rate constants k(2 phi) = k(2)(1 - phi) were obtained, The rate constants of the corresponding hydrolytic reactions were also examined in CTABr micelles. While the DAAP catalysts were partitioned between the micellar and aqueous pseudophases in ME, the hydrophobic substrates were found to be mainly confined to oil-rich phases, Present results indicate that the main effect of ME media on the hydrolysis reaction is due,to both electrostatic reasons and substrate partitioning.

Nanoparticles of titania were obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of Ti(i-OC3H7)(4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine derived from dodecylamine-isopropanol-water solution (water/oil microemulsion). The mesolamellar phase based on titanium nitride (TiN) was obtained by first decomposing TiN atleast partially using the 1:1 solution of acid mixture (HF and HNO3 in the ratio of 9:1) in water and then templating onto the cationic surfactant namely, cetyltrimethylammaniumbromide (abbreviated as CTAB) at 80 degrees C. The synthesis of mesolamellar phase based on TiN involves the charge matched templating approach following the counter-ion mediated pathway. The samples thus obtained were characterized by small angle x-ray diffraction using Cuk(a) radiation, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated some satisfactory results. The precursor is heated at several temperatures between 500 and 900 degrees C. The product samples possess mesoporosity with broadly distributed pores of about 30 nm diameters. There is a decrease in pore volume as well as in surface area by increasing the temperature of preparation. Nevertheless, the electrochemical activity of the composite increases with an increase in temperature. The discharge capacity values of the samples prepared at 800 and 900 degrees C are about 250 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 40 mA g(-1) with an excellent cycling stability. A value of 225 mAh g(-1) is obtained at the end of 30 charge-discharge cycles. Both these composite samples possess high rate capability, but the 800 degrees C sample is marginally superior to the 900 degrees C sample. A discharge capacity of 100 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a specific current of 1000 mA g(-1). The high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the composite samples. Nanocrystalline titania are a robust candidate for various functional applications owing to its non-toxicity, cheap availability, ease of preparation and exceptional photochemical as well as thermal stability. The uniqueness in each lattice structure of titania leads to multifaceted physico-chemical and opto-electronic properties, which yield different functionalities and thus influence their performances in various green energy applications. The high temperature treatment for crystallizing titania triggers inevitable particle growth and the destruction of delicate nanostructural features. Thus, the preparation of crystalline titania with tunable phase/particle size/morphology at low to moderate temperatures using a solution-based approach has paved the way for further exciting areas of research. In this focused review, titania synthesis from hydrothermal/solvothermal method, conventional sol-gel method and sol-gel-assisted method via ultrasonication, photoillumination and ILs, thermolysis and microemulsion routes are discussed. These wet chemical methods have broader visibility, since multiple reaction parameters, such as precursor chemistry, surfactants, chelating agents, solvents, mineralizer, pH of the solution, aging time, reaction temperature/time, inorganic electrolytes, can be easily manipulated to tune the final physical structure. This review sheds light on the stabilization/phase transformation pathways of titania polymorphs like anatase, rutile, brookite and TiO2(B) under a variety of reaction conditions. The driving force for crystallization arising from complex species in solution coupled with pH of the solution and ion species facilitating the orientation of octahedral resulting in a crystalline phase are reviewed in detail. In addition to titanium halide/alkoxide, the nucleation of titania from other precursors like peroxo and layered titanates are also discussed. The nonaqueous route and ball milling-induced titania transformation is briefly outlined; moreover, the lacunae in understanding the concepts and future prospects in this exciting field are suggested.
