It is shown that lithium can be oxidatively extracted from Li2MoO3 at room temperature using Br2 in CHCl3. The delithiated oxides, Li2âxMoO3 (0 < x â¤ 1.5) retain the parent ordered rocksalt structure. Complete removal of lithium from Li2MoO3 using Br2 in CH3CN results in a poorly crystalline MoO3 that transforms to the stable structure at 280°C. Li2MoO3 undergoes topotactic ion-exchange in aqueous H2SO4 to yield a new protonated oxide, H2MoO3.
Probing the mobility of lithium in LISICON: Li+/H+ exchange studies in Li2ZnGeO4 and Li2+2xZn1-xGeO4
Resumo:
We investigated Li+/H+ exchange in the lithium ion conductors (LISICONS) [ Li2+2xZn1-xGeO4; x = 0.5 ( I) and x = 0.75 (II)] and their parent, gamma-Li2ZnGeO4. Facile exchange of approximately 2x lithium ions per formula unit occurs with both the LISICONS in dilute acetic acid, while the parent material does not exhibit an obvious Li+/H+ exchange under the same conditions. The results can be understood in terms of lithium ion distribution in the crystal structures: the parent Li2ZnGeO4, where all the lithium ions form part of the tetrahedral framework structure, does not exhibit a ready Li+/H+ exchange; LISICONS, where lithium ions are distributed between framework ( tetrahedral) and nonframework sites, undergo a facile Li+/H+ exchange of the nonframework site lithium ions. Accordingly, Li+/H+ exchange in dilute aqueous acetic acid provides a convenient probe to distinguish between the mobile and the immobile lithium ions in lithium ion conductors.

New protonated layered oxides, HMWO6·1.5H2O (M=Nb or Ta), have been synthesized by topotactic exchange of lithium in trirutile LiMWO6 with protons by treatment with dilute HNO3. The tetragonal cell constants are a=4.71 (2) and c=25.70 (8)Å for HNbWO6·1.5H2O and a=4.70 (2) and c=25.75 (9) Å for HTaWO6·1.5H2O. Partially hydrated compounds, HMWO6·0.5H2O and anhydrous compounds, HMWO6 retain the layered structure. The structure of these oxides consists of MWO6 sheets built up of M/W-oxygen octahedra with rutile type corner- and edge-sharing. Interlayer protons in HMWO6 are exchanged with Li+, Na+, K+ and Tl+. HMWO6 exhibit Brønsted acidity intercalating n-alkylamines and pyridine.

Doping of TiO2 with a suitable metal ion where dopant redox potential couples with that of titanium (Ti4+) and act as catalyst for additional reduction of Ti4+ to Ti2+ (Ti4+ -> Ti3+ -> Ti2+) is envisaged here to enhance lithium storage even higher than one Li/TiO2. Accordingly, 10 atom% Pt ion substituted TiO2, Ti0.9Pt0.1O2 nanocrystallites was synthesized by sonochemical method using diethylenetriamine (DETA) as complexing agent. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), Rietveld refinement and TEM study reveals that Ti0.9Pt0.1O2 nanocrystallites of similar to 4 nm size crystallize in anatase structure. X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) study confirms that and both Ti and Pt are in 4+ oxidation state. Due to Pt4+ ion substitution in TiO2, reducibility of TiO2 was enhanced and Ti4+ was reduced up to Ti2+ state via coupling of Pt states (Pt4+/Pt2+/Pt-0) with Ti states (Ti4+/Ti3+/Ti2+). Galvanostatic cycling of Ti0.9Pt0.1O2 against lithium showed very high capacity of 430 mAhg(-1) or exchange of similar to 1.5Li/Ti0.9Pt0.1O2. (C) 2012 The Electrochemical Society. Lithium silicophosphate glasses have been prepared by a sol-gel route over a wide range of compositions. Their structural and electrical properties have been investigated. Infrared spectroscopic studies show the presence of hydroxyl groups attached to Si and P. MAS NMR investigations provide evidence for the presence of different phosphatic units in the structure. The variations of de conductivities at 423 K and activation energies have been studied as a function of composition, and both exhibit an increasing trend with the ratio of nonbridging oxygen to bridging oxygen in the structure. Ac conductivity behavior shows that the power law exponent, s, is temperature dependent and exhibits a minimum. Relaxation behavior has been examined in detail using an electrical modulus formalism, and modulus data were fitted to Kohlraush-William-Watts stretched exponential function. A structural model has been proposed and the unusual properties exhibited by this unique system of glasses have been rationalized using this model. Ion transport in these glasses appears to be confined to unidimensional conduits defined by modified phosphate chains and interspersed with unmodified silica units.

We report the ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties of the composite films of lithium tantalate (LT) nanoparticle in poly(vinylidene fluoride) PVDF matrix at different volume fractions of LT (f(LT) = 0.047, 0.09 and 0.17). For an applied electric field of 150 kV cm(-1) the nonvolatile polarization of the composite was observed to increase from 0.014 mu C cm(-2) at f(LT) = 0 to 2.06 mu C cm(-2) at f(LT) = 0.17. For f(LT) = 0.17, the composite films exhibit a saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loop with a remanent polarization (2P(r) = 4.13 mu C cm(-2)). Compared with pure poled PVDF the composite films also showed a factor of about five enhancement in the pyroelectric coefficient at f(LT) = 0.17. When used in energy detection mode the pyroelectric voltage sensitivity of the composite films was found to increase from 3.93 to 18.5 VJ(-1) with an increase in f(LT) from 0.0 to 0.17.

Regenerable 'gel-coated' cationic resins with fast sorption kinetics and high sorption capacity have application potential for removal of trace metal ions even in large-scale operations. Poly(acrylic acid) has been gel-coated on high-surface area silica (pre-coated with ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer providing a thin barrier layer) and insolubilized by crosslinking with a low-molecular-weight diepoxide (epoxy equivalent 180 g) in the presence of benzyl dimethylamine catalyst at 70 degrees C, In experiments performed for Ca2+ sorption from dilute aqueous solutions of Ca(NO,),, the gel-coated acrylic resin is found to have nearly 40% higher sorption capacity than the bead-form commercial methacrylic resin Amberlite IRC-50 and also several limes higher rate of sorption. The sorption on the gel-coated sorbent under vigorous agitation has the characteristics of particle diffusion control with homogeneous (gel) diffusion in resin phase. A new mathematical model is proposed for such sorption on gel-coated ion-exchange resin in finite bath and solved by applying operator-theoretic methods. The analytical solution so obtained shows goad agreement with experimental sorption kinetics at relatively low levels (< 70%) of resin conversion.

Ion transport mechanism in lithium perchlorate (LiClO4)-succinonitrile (SN), a prototype of plastic crystalline soft matter electrolyte is discussed in the context of solvent configurational isomerism and ion solvation. Contributions of both solvent configurational isomerism and ion solvation are reflected in the activation energy for ion conduction in 0-1 M LiClO4-SN samples. Activation energy due to solvent configurational changes, that is, trans-gauche isomerism is observed to be a function of salt content and decreases in presence of salt (except at high salt concentrations, e.g. 1 M LiClO4-SN). The remnant contribution to activation energy is attributed to ion-association. The X-ray diffraction of single crystals obtained using in situ cryo-crystallography confirms directly the observations of the ionic conductivity measurements. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and NMR line width measurements provide additional support to our proposition of ion transport in the prototype plastic crystalline electrolyte.

Nonlinear absorption and refraction phenomena in stoichiometric lithium niobate (SLN) pure and co-doped with Zn and Nd, and congruent lithium niobate (CLN) were investigated using Z-scan technique. Femtosecond laser pulses from Ti:Sapphire laser (800 nm, 110 fs pulse width and 1 kHz repetition rate) were utilized for the experiment. The process responsible for nonlinear behavior of the samples was identified to be three photon absorption (3PA). This is in agreement with the band gap energies of the samples obtained from the linear absorption cut off and the slope of the plot of Ln(1 − TOA) vs. Ln(I0) using Sutherland’s theory (s = 2.1, for 3PA). The nonlinear refractive index (n2) of Zn doped samples was found to be lower than that of pure samples. Our experiments show that there exists a correlation between the nonlinear properties and the stoichiometry of the samples. The values of n2 fall into the same range as those obtained for the materials of similar band gap.

Lithium ammonium sulphate (LAS) undergoes a phase transition at TC1=459.5K from a paraelectric phase (phase I) to a ferroelectric phase (phase II) and again at TC2=283K to a polar ferroelastic phase (phase III). Proton spin lattice relaxation time measured at 10 MHz in powdered LAS in the temperature range 480 to 77K shows discontinuous changes at the two transitions.

Recently, reports have appeared which show structural variations in B-DNA and indicate deviations from a uniform helical structure. We report for the first time that these indications are also present in the B-form fibre diffraction patterns for the lithium salt of natural DNA. We have used an improved method of controlling the salt concentration in the fibres. Our results are based on the appearance and disappearance of meridional reflections on different layer lines depending upon the salt.

The resistivity of two types of lithium fast-ion conductors, Li16-2xZnx(GeO4)4 (x=1,2) and Li3+xGexV1-xO4 (x=0.25,0.6,0.72), showed pronounced maxima as a function of pressure. For the first type, ln(ρ / ρ0) peaked at values of 0.12 (x=1) and 0.35 (x=2) near 20 kbar and decreased thereafter up to 80 kbar. Thermal activation energies and prefactors also showed corresponding maxima. For the second type, ln(ρ / ρ0) increased to 3-4 between 20 and 32 kbar. Near 80 kbar, ρ decreased (for x=0.25) by a factor of 250. The results are interpreted in terms of negative activation volumes.
Effect of Temperature Variation on Sister Chromatid Exchange Frequency in Cultured Human Lymphocytes
Resumo:
The effect of temperature variation on sister chromatid exchange (SCE) frequencies in human lymphocytes was studied. An increase as well as decrease in incubation temperature of cells leads to a higher frequency of sister chromatid exchanges than in cultures grown at 37°C. In addition, it was observed that mitotic: index and cell cycle duration were affected by low temperature.

Both LiNbWO6 and LiTaWO6 undergo ion exchange in hot aqueous H2SO4 yielding the hydrates HMWO6 · H2O (M = Nb or Ta). The reaction is accompanied by a structural transformation from the rutile to the ReO3 structure. The cell constants are a = 3.783(3)Å for HNbWO6 · H2O and a = 3.785(5)Å for HTaWO6 · H2O. The ReO3 structure is retained by the dehydration products HMWO6 and MWO5.5 as well. HMWO6 phases yield H1+xMWO6 hydrogen bronzes on exposure to hydrogen in the presence of platinum catalyst.
