Power semiconductor devices have finite turn on and turn off delays that may not be perfectly matched. In a leg of a voltage source converter, the simultaneous turn on of one device and the turn off of the complementary device will cause a DC bus shoot through, if the turn off delay is larger than the turn on delay time. To avoid this situation it is common practice to blank the two complementary devices in a leg for a small duration of time while switching, which is called dead time. This paper proposes a logic circuit for digital implementation required to control the complementary devices of a leg independently and at the same time preventing cross conduction of devices in a leg, and while providing accurate and stable dead time. This implementation is based on the concept of finite state machines. This circuit can also block improper PWM pulses to semiconductor switches and filters small pulses notches below a threshold time width as the narrow pulses do not provide any significant contribution to average pole voltage, but leads to increased switching loss. This proposed dead time logic has been implemented in a CPLD and is implemented in a protection and delay card for 3- power converters.

High molecular weight polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized by a combined procedure incorporating various synthesis methods. Temperature and open circuit potential of the reaction mixture were collected to monitor the reaction progress. The polymer is characterized by various techniques including gel permeation chromatography, dynamic light scattering, infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning calorimetry for elucidating the molecular architecture obtained by this method. As-synthesized PANI was found to possess high molecular weight, reduced branching, reduced cross-linking, and to predominantly consist of linear polymer chains. This polymer was also found to be more stable in solution form. JV characteristics of as-synthesized PANI films indicate a high current density which is due to increased free pathways and less traps for the charge transport to occur in PANI films. POLYM. ENG. The β-phase of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is well known for its piezoelectric properties. PVDF films have been developed using solvent cast method. The films thus produced are in α-phase. The α-phase is transformed to piezoelectric β-phase when the film is hot-stretched with various different stretching factors at various different temperatures. The films are then characterized in terms of their mechanical properties and surface morphological changes during the transformation from α- to β-phases by using X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, Raman spectra, Infrared spectra, tensile testing, and scanning electron microscopy. The films showed increased crystallinity with stretching at temperature up to 80°C. The optimum conditions to achieve β-phase have been discussed in detail. The fabricated PVDF sensors have been tested for free vibration and impact on plate structure, and its response is compared with conventional piezoelectric wafer type sensor. The resonant and antiresonant peaks in the frequency response of PVDF sensor match well with that of lead zirconate titanate wafer sensors. Effective piezoelectric properties and the variations in the frequency response spectra due to free vibration and impact loading conditions are reported. POLYM. ENG. The thermal degradation of poly(n-butyl methacrylate-co-alkyl acrylate) was compared with ultrasonic degradation. For this purpose, different compositions of poly (n-butyl methacrylate-co-methyl acrylate) (PBMAMA) and a particular composition of poly(n-butyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (PBMAEA) and poly(n-butyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) (PBMABA) were synthesized and characterized. The thermal degradation of polymers shows that the poly(alkyl acrylates) degrade in a single stage by random chain scission and poly(n-butyl methacrylate) degrades in two stages. The number of stages of thermal degradation of copolymers was same as the majority component of the copolymer. The activation energy corresponding to random chain scission increased and then decreased with an increase of n-butyl methacrylate fraction in copolymer. The effect of methyl acrylate content, alkyl acrylate substituent, and solvents on the ultrasonic degradation of these copolymers was investigated. A continuous distribution kinetics model was used to determine the degradation rate coefficients. The degradation rate coefficient of PBMAMA varied nonlinearly with n-butyl methacrylate content. The degradation of poly (n-butyl methacrylate-co-alkyl acrylate) followed the order: PBMAMA < PBMAEA < PBMABA. The variation in the degradation rate constant with composition of the copolymer was discussed in relation to the competing effects of the stretching of the polymer in solution and the electron displacement in the main chain. Composites comprising Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) (PMMA) and CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) via melt mixing followed by hot pressing were fabricated. These were characterized using X-ray diffraction, thermo gravimetric, scanning electron microscopy, and Impedance analyzer for their structural, morphology, and dielectric properties. Composites were found to have better thermal stability than that of pure PMMA. The composite, with 38 Vol % of CCTO (in PMMA), exhibited remarkably low dielectric loss at high frequencies and the low frequency relaxation is attributed to the space charge polarization/MWS effect. Theoretical models were employed to rationalize the dielectric behavior of these composites. At higher temperatures, the relaxation peak shifts to higher frequencies, due to the merging of both beta and alpha relaxations into a single dielectric dispersion peak. The AC conductivity in the high frequency region was attributed to the electronic polarization. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 54:551-558, 2014. (c) 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers

Workplace noise has become one of the major issues in industry not only because of workers’ health but also due to safety. Electric motors, particularly, inverter fed induction motors emit objectionably high levels of noise. This has led to the emergence of a research area, concerned with measurement and mitigation of the acoustic noise. This paper presents a lowcost option for measurement and spectral analysis of acoustic noise emitted by electric motors. The system consists of an electret microphone, amplifier and filter. It makes use of the windows sound card and associated software for data acquisition and analysis. The measurement system is calibrated using a professional sound level meter. Acoustic noise measurements are made on an induction motor drive using the proposed system as per relevant international standards. These measurements are seen to match closely with those of a professional meter.

Given the recent reports pertaining to novel optical properties of ultra-small quantum dots (QDs) (r <2 nm), this nanomaterial is of relevance to both technology and science. However it is well known that in these size regimes most chalocogenide QD dispersions are unstable. Since applications often require use of QD dispersions (e.g. for deployment on a substrate), stabilizing these ultra-small particles is of practical relevance. In this work we demonstrate a facile, green, solution approach for synthesis of stable, ultra-small ZnO QDs having radius less than 2 nm. The particle size is calculated using Brits' equation and confirmed by transmission electron micrographs. ZnO QDs reported remain stable for > 120 days in ethanol (at similar to 298-303 K). We report digestive ripening (DR) in TEA capped ZnO QDs; this occurs rapidly over a short duration of 5 min. To explain this observation we propose a suitable mechanism based on the Lee's theory, which correlates the tendency of DR with the observed zeta potentials of the dispersed medium. To the best of our knowledge this is the (i) first report on DR in oxide QDs, as well as the first direct experimental verification of Lee's theory, and (ii) most rapid DR reported so far. The facile nature of the method presented here makes ultra-small ZnO readily accessible for fundamental exploration and technologically relevant applications. The galactose-binding lectin from the seeds of the jequirity plant (Abrus precatorius) was subjected to various chemical modifications in order to detect the amino acid residues involved in its binding activity. Modification of lysine, tyrosine, arginine, histidine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid residues did not affect the carbohydratebinding activity of the agglutinin. However, modification of tryptophan residues carried out in native and denaturing conditions with N-bromosuccinimide and 2- hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl bromide led to a complete loss of its carbohydrate-binding activity. Under denaturing conditions 30 tryptophan residues/molecule were modified by both reagents, whereas only 16 and 18 residues/molecule were available for modification by N-bromosuccinimide and 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl bromide respectively under native conditions. The relative loss in haemagglutinating activity after the modification of tryptophan residues indicates that two residues/molecule are required for the carbohydrate-binding activity of the agglutinin. A partial protection was observed in the presence of saturating concentrations of lactose (0.15 M). The decrease in fluorescence intensity of Abrus agglutinin on modification of tryptophan residues is linear in the absence of lactose and shows a biphasic pattern in the presence of lactose, indicating that tryptophan residues go from a similar to a different molecular environment on saccharide binding. The secondary structure of the protein remains practically unchanged upon modification of tryptophan residues, as indicated by c.d. and immunodiffusion studies, confirming that the loss in activity is due to modification only.

Polarization of ligand fluorescence was used to study the binding of 4-methylumbelliferyl beta-D-galactopyranoside (MeUmb-Galp) to Abrus precatorious agglutinin. The binding of the fluorescent sugar to the lectin led to considerable polarization of the MeUmb-Galp fluorescence, which was also quenched by about 30% on binding to the lectin. The binding of the fluorescent sugar was carbohydrate-specific, as evidenced by inhibition of both fluorescence polarization and quenching when lectin was preincubated with lactose. The association constant as determined by fluorescence polarization is 1.42 x 10(4) M-1 at 25 degrees C and is in excellent agreement with those determined by fluorescence quenching (Ka = 1.51 x 10(4) M-1) and equilibrium dialysis (Ka = 1.62 x 10(4) M-1) at 25 degrees C. The numbers of binding sites as determined by fluorescence polarization, quenching and equilibrium dialysis agree very well with one another, n being equal to 2.0 +/- 0.05. The consistency between the association constant value determined by fluorescence polarization, quenching and equilibrium dialysis shows the validity of this approach to study lectin-sugar interaction.
