We address the problem of high-resolution reconstruction in frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography (FDOCT). The traditional method employed uses the inverse discrete Fourier transform, which is limited in resolution due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. We propose a reconstruction technique based on zero-crossing (ZC) interval analysis. The motivation for our approach lies in the observation that, for a multilayered specimen, the backscattered signal may be expressed as a sum of sinusoids, and each sinusoid manifests as a peak in the FDOCT reconstruction. The successive ZC intervals of a sinusoid exhibit high consistency, with the intervals being inversely related to the frequency of the sinusoid. The statistics of the ZC intervals are used for detecting the frequencies present in the input signal. The noise robustness of the proposed technique is improved by using a cosine-modulated filter bank for separating the input into different frequency bands, and the ZC analysis is carried out on each band separately. The design of the filter bank requires the design of a prototype, which we accomplish using a Kaiser window approach. We show that the proposed method gives good results on synthesized and experimental data. The resolution is enhanced, and noise robustness is higher compared with the standard Fourier reconstruction. Using surface charts at 0330GMT, the movement df the monsoon trough during the months June to September 1990 al two fixed longitudes, namely 79 degrees E and 85 degrees E, is studied. The probability distribution of trough position shows that the median, mean and mode occur at progressively more northern latitudes, especially at 85 degrees E, with a pronounced mode that is close to the northern-most limit reached by the trough. A spectral analysis of the fluctuating latitudinal position of the trough is carried out using FFT and the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM). Both methods show significant peaks around 7.5 and 2.6 days, and a less significant one around 40-50 days. The two peaks at the shorter period are more prominent at the eastern longitude. MEM shows an additional peak around 15 days. A study of the weather systems that occurred during the season shows them to have a duration around 3 days and an interval between systems of around 9 days, suggesting a possible correlation with the dominant short periods observed in the spectrum of trough position.

An exact solution to the unsteady convective diffusion equation for the dispersion of a solute in a fully developed laminar flow in an annular pipe is obtained. Generalized dispersion model which is valid for all time after the injection of solute in the flow is used to evaluate the dispersion coefficients as functions of time. It is observed that the axial dispersion decreases with an increase in the radius of the inner cylinder.

Some continuity and differentiability properties of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of finite section normal integral operators are proved. These are the extension of corresponding results for symmetric operators ([4.], 554–566; K. B. Athreya and R. Vittal Rao, to appear; [10.], 463–471.

We compare two popular methods for estimating the power spectrum from short data windows, namely the adaptive multivariate autoregressive (AMVAR) method and the multitaper method. By analyzing a simulated signal (embedded in a background Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise process) we demonstrate that the AMVAR method performs better at detecting short bursts of oscillations compared to the multitaper method. However, both methods are immune to jitter in the temporal location of the signal. We also show that coherence can still be detected in noisy bivariate time series data by the AMVAR method even if the individual power spectra fail to show any peaks. Finally, using data from two monkeys performing a visuomotor pattern discrimination task, we demonstrate that the AMVAR method is better able to determine the termination of the beta oscillations when compared to the multitaper method.

The analysis of the dispersion equation for surface magnetoplasmons in the Faraday configuration for the degenerate case of decaying constants being equal is given from the point of view of understanding the non-existence of the “degenerate modes”. This analysis also shows that there exist well defined “degenerate points” on the dispersion curve with electromagnetic fields varying linearly over small distances taken away from the interface.

Using a singular perturbation analysis the nonplanar Burgers' equation is solved to yield the shock wave-displacement due to diffusion for spherical and cylindrical N waves, thus supplementing the earlier results of Lighthill for the plane N waves. An error-free computational approach is employed for finding the integer solution to a system of linear equations, using finite-field arithmetic. This approach is also extended to find the optimum solution for linear inequalities such as those arising in interval linear programming probloms.

We address asymptotic analysis of option pricing in a regime switching market where the risk free interest rate, growth rate and the volatility of the stocks depend on a finite state Markov chain. We study two variations of the chain namely, when the chain is moving very fast compared to the underlying asset price and when it is moving very slow. Using quadratic hedging and asymptotic expansion, we derive corrections on the locally risk minimizing option price.

In these lectures we plan to present a survey of certain aspects of harmonic analysis on a Heisenberg nilmanifold Gammakslash}H-n. Using Weil-Brezin-Zak transform we obtain an explicit decomposition of L-2 (Gammakslash}H-n) into irreducible subspaces invariant under the right regular representation of the Heisenberg group. We then study the Segal-Bargmann transform associated to the Laplacian on a nilmanifold and characterise the image of L-2 (GammakslashH-n) in terms of twisted Bergman and Hermite Bergman spaces.

We propose a self-regularized pseudo-time marching scheme to solve the ill-posed, nonlinear inverse problem associated with diffuse propagation of coherent light in a tissuelike object. In particular, in the context of diffuse correlation tomography (DCT), we consider the recovery of mechanical property distributions from partial and noisy boundary measurements of light intensity autocorrelation. We prove the existence of a minimizer for the Newton algorithm after establishing the existence of weak solutions for the forward equation of light amplitude autocorrelation and its Frechet derivative and adjoint. The asymptotic stability of the solution of the ordinary differential equation obtained through the introduction of the pseudo-time is also analyzed. We show that the asymptotic solution obtained through the pseudo-time marching converges to that optimal solution provided the Hessian of the forward equation is positive definite in the neighborhood of optimal solution. The superior noise tolerance and regularization-insensitive nature of pseudo-dynamic strategy are proved through numerical simulations in the context of both DCT and diffuse optical tomography. This paper deals with a batch service queue and multiple vacations. The system consists of a single server and a waiting room of finite capacity. Arrival of customers follows a Markovian arrival process (MAP). The server is unavailable for occasional intervals of time called vacations, and when it is available, customers are served in batches of maximum size ‘b’ with a minimum threshold value ‘a’. We obtain the queue length distributions at various epochs along with some key performance measures. Finally, some numerical results have been presented.

The unsteady mixed convection flow of an incompressible laminar electrically conducting fluid over an impulsively stretched permeable vertical surface in an unbounded quiescent fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field has been investigated. At the same time, the surface temperature is suddenly increased from the surrounding fluid temperature or a constant heat flux is suddenly imposed on the surface. The problem is formulated in such a way that for small time it is governed by Rayleigh type of equation and for large time by Crane type of equation. The non-linear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the unsteady mixed convection flow under boundary layer approximations have been solved analytically by using the homotopy analysis method as well as numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to decrease rapidly with time in a small time interval and they tend to steady-state values for t* >= 5. They also increase with the buoyancy force and suction, but decrease with injection rate. The local skin friction coefficient increases with the magnetic field, but the local Nusselt number decreases. There is a smooth transition from the unsteady state to the steady state. A few red degraded bands attributable to NS have been reported earlier by Fowler and Barker, Dressler and Barrow et al, and they occur in the same region (2300 to 2700 Å) as the bands of the known systems (C2∑+-X2P{cyrillic}) and (A2Δ-X2P{cyrillic}). Measurements made on the heads of some of these weak bands led Barrow et al. to believe that these bands may form a system analogous to the β-system of NO and be due to a2P{cyrillic}-2P{cyrillic} transition. The spectrum of NS has now been studied in a little more detail by means of an uncondensed discharge through dry nitrogen and sulphur vapour in the presence of argon and thirty three bands belonging to this system have been recorded in the region 2280 to 2760 Å. It has been found possible to represent the band heads by means of the equation {Mathematical expression}. Taking the lower state doublet interval as 223 cm-1, it is shown that the separation in the upper state is 94 cm-1. The ratio of the force constants in the upper and the ground states is found to be 0·39 and is nearly the same as that in the β-system of NO (0·30). The present vibrational analysis therefore supports the view that these new red degraded bands of NS arise from a (B2P{cyrillic}→X2P{cyrillic}) transition and the observed intensity distribution in the form of a wide parabola is also in qualitative agreement with what is expected from the moderately large Δ re (∼0·12Å) value.
