in this contribution we present a soft matter solid electrolyte which was obtained by inclusion of a polymer (polyacrylonitrile, PAN) in LiClO4/LiTFSI-succinonitrile (SN), a semi-solid organic plastic electrolyte. Addition of the polymer resulted in considerable enhancement in ionic conductivity as well as mechanical strength of LiX-SN (X=ClO4, TFSI) plastic electrolyte. Ionic conductivity of 92.5%-[1 M LiClO4-SN]:7.5%-PAN (PAN amount as per SN weight) composite at 25 degrees C recorded a remarkably high value of 7 x 10(-3) Omega(-1) cm(-1), higher by few tens of order in magnitude compared to 1 M LiClO4-SN. Composite conductivity at sub-ambient temperature is also quite high. At -20 degrees C, the ionic conductivity of (100 -x)%-[1 M LiClO4-SN]:x%-PAN composites are in the range 3 x 10(-5)-4.5 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately one to two orders of magnitude higher with respect to 1 M LiClO4-SN electrolyte conductivity. Addition of PAN resulted in an increase of the Young's modulus (Y) from Y -> 0 for LiClO4-SN to a maximum of 0.4MPa for the composites. Microstructural studies based on X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggest that enhancement in composite ionic conductivity is a combined effect of decrease in crystallinity and enhanced trans conformer concentration. Studies of valence bands and core levels of solids by photoelectron spectroscopy are described at length. Satellite phenomena in the core level spectra have been discussed in some detail and it has been pointed out that the intensity of satellites appearing next to metal and ligand core levels critically depends on the metal-ligand overlap. Use of photoelectron spectroscopy in investigating metal-insulator transitions and spin-state transitions in solids is examined. It is shown that relative intensities of metal Auger lines in transition metal oxides and other systems provide valuable information on the valence bands. Occurrence of interatomic Auger transitions in competition with intraatomic transitions is discussed. Applications of electron energy loss spectroscopy and other techniques of electron spectroscopy in the study of gas-solid interactions are briefly presented.

The literature on the subject of the present investigation is somewhat meagre. A rotary converter or synchronous motor no! provided with any special starting devices forms, when started from the alternating current side, a type of induction motor whoso Htator is provided with a polyphase winding, and whoso rotor has a single-phase (or single magnetic axis) winding.

Transmission loss of a rectangular expansion chamber, the inlet and outlet of which are situated at arbitrary locations of the chamber, i.e., the side wall or the face of the chamber, are analyzed here based on the Green's function of a rectangular cavity with homogeneous boundary conditions. The rectangular chamber Green's function is expressed in terms of a finite number of rigid rectangular cavity mode shapes. The inlet and outlet ports are modeled as uniform velocity pistons. If the size of the piston is small compared to wavelength, then the plane wave excitation is a valid assumption. The velocity potential inside the chamber is expressed by superimposing the velocity potentials of two different configurations. The first configuration is a piston source at the inlet port and a rigid termination at the outlet, and the second one is a piston at the outlet with a rigid termination at the inlet. Pressure inside the chamber is derived from velocity potentials using linear momentum equation. The average pressure acting on the pistons at the inlet and outlet locations is estimated by integrating the acoustic pressure over the piston area in the two constituent configurations. The transfer matrix is derived from the average pressure values and thence the transmission loss is calculated. The results are verified against those in the literature where use has been made of modal expansions and also numerical models (FEM fluid). The transfer matrix formulation for yielding wall rectangular chambers has been derived incorporating the structural–acoustic coupling. Parametric studies are conducted for different inlet and outlet configurations, and the various phenomena occurring in the TL curves that cannot be explained by the classical plane wave theory, are discussed.
Instabilities induced by variation of Brunt-Vaisala frequency in compressible stratified shear flows
Resumo:
The stability characteristics of a Helmholtz velocity profile in a stably stratified, compressible fluid in the presence of a lower rigid boundary are studied. A jump in the Brunt-Vaisala frequency at a level different from the shear zone is introduced and the variation of the Brunt-Vaisala frequency with respect to the vertical coordinate in the middle layer of the three-layered model is considered. An analytic solution in each of the layers is obtained, and the dispersion relation is solved numerically for parameters relevant to the model. The effect of shear in the lowermost layer of the three-layered model for a Boussinesq fluid is discussed. The results are compared with the earlier studies of Lindzen and Rosenthal, and Sachdev and Satya Narayanan. In the present model, new unstable modes with larger growth rates are obtained and the most unstable gravity wave modes are found to agree closely with the observed ones at various heights. Through the analysis of a set of numerical simulations of major mergers between initially non-rotating, pressure-supported progenitor galaxies with a range of central mass concentrations, we have shown that: (1) it is possible to generate elliptical-like galaxies, with outside one effective radius, as a result of the conversion of orbital- into internal-angular momentum; (2) the outer regions acquire part of the angular momentum first; (3) both the baryonic and the dark matter components of the remnant galaxy acquire part of the angular momentum, the relative fractions depending on the initial concentration of the merging galaxies. For this conversion to occur the initial baryonic component must be sufficiently dense and/or the encounter should take place on an orbit with high angular momentum. Systems with these hybrid properties have recently been observed through a combination of stellar absorption lines and planetary nebulae for kinematic studies of early-type galaxies. Our results are in qualitative agreement with these observations and demonstrate that even mergers composed of non rotating, pressure-supported progenitor galaxies can produce early-type galaxies with significant rotation at large radii.

The method of characteristics with some simplifying assumptions is made applicable for analyzing a given straight slope. By assuming that the mobilized shear strength varies with depth, and treating the whole soil mass as a series of layers, factors of safety of a given slope at different heights and a series of lines with different mobilized shear strength are obtained. The results show that the factors of safety obtained by the present method are lower than those obtained by friction circle method.

A study of the phase transitions in (NH4)2SO4 and (NH4)2SO4---K2SO4 mixed crystals by EPR of the CrO3- ion is reported. The results indicate a bilinear coupling of the order parameter with spontaneous polarization and a crossover from a discontinuous to a continuous nature of the phase transition in mixed crystals.

Carbon particles synthesized by acetylene pyrolysis in a porous graphite reactor have been investigated. The intimate chemical and physical structures of the particles were probed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The analysis points towards a chemical structure composed of soluble low-mass aromatics surrounding small insoluble larger aromatic islands bridged by aliphatic groups. The diffraction profile indicates that the particles are mostly amorphous with small crystalline domains of not, vert, similar6.5 Å composed of a few stacked graphene layers. The properties of these particles are compared with these obtained with other types of production methods such as laser pyrolysis and combustion flames. The results are briefly discussed in the context of the evolution of infrared interstellar emitters. Possible uses of the reactor are proposed.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions.
