The hemagglutinin (H) protein of Rinderpest virus expressed by a recombinant buculovirus used as a vaccine produced high titres of neutralizing antibody to Rinderpest virus in the vaccinated cattle, comparable to the levels produced by live attenuated vaccine. The immunized cattle were protected against a vaccine-virus challenge, as demonstrated by the failure of development of antibodies to N protein of the vaccine virus. The lack of replication of vaccine virus in the immunized cattle indicated that they are capable of showing a protective response if challenged with a virulent virus.

This paper is a condensed version of the final report of a detailed field study of rural energy consumption patterns in six villages located west of Bangalore in the dry belt of Karnataka State in India. The study was carried out in two phases; first, a pilot study of four villages and second, the detailed study of six villages, the populations of which varied from around 350 to about 950. The pilot survey ended in late 1976, and most of the data was collected for the main project in 1977. Processing of the collected data was completed in 1980. The aim was to carry out a census survey, rather than a sample study. Hence, considerable effort was expended in production of both a suitable questionnaire, ensuring that all respondents were contacted, and devising methods which would accurately reflect the actual energy use in various energy-utilising activities. In the end, 560 households out of 578 (97%) were surveyed. The following ranking was found for the various energy sources in order of average percentage contribution to the annual total energy requirement: firewood, 81·6%; human energy, 7·7%; animal energy, 2·7%; kerosene, 2·1%; electricity, 0·6% and all other sources (rice husks, agro-wastes, coal and diesel fuel), 5·3%. In other words commercial fuels made only a small contribution to the overall energy use. It should be noted that dung cakes are not burned in this region. The average energy use pattern, sector by sector, again on a percentage basis, was as follows: domestic, 88·3%; industry, 4·7%; agriculture, 4·3%; lighting, 2·2% and transport, 0·5%. The total annual per capita energy consumption was 12·6 ± 1·2 GJ, giving an average annual household consumption of around 78·6 GJ.

Bulk SixTe100-x (10 less-than-or-equals, slant x less-than-or-equals, slant 28) glasses have been prepared by the melt quenching technique. The crystallization of these glasses has been studied by using differential scanning calorimetry. The composition dependence of the glass transition temperature Tg, the recrystallization temperature Tcr and the melting temperature Tm show an unusual behaviour at the composition x congruent with 20. The glasses with 10 less-than-or-equals, slant x less-than-or-equals, slant 20 undergo double glass transition and double stage crystallization phenomena. On the other hand, glasses with 22 less-than-or-equals, slant x less-than-or-equals, slant 28 exhibit eutectic crystallization. The phases at different stages of crystallization have been identified by using X-ray diffraction techniques. The unusual behaviour at x congruent with 20 can be explained on the basis of the changes in the network topologies of IV-VI chalcogenide glasses.

Rammed earth walls are low carbon emission and energy efficient alternatives to load bearing walls. Large numbers of rammed earth buildings have been constructed in the recent past across the globe. This paper is focused on embodied energy in cement stabilised rammed earth (CSRE) walls. Influence of soil grading, density and cement content on compaction energy input has been monitored. A comparison between energy content of cement and energy in transportation of materials, with that of the actual energy input during rammed earth compaction in the actual field conditions and the laboratory has been made. Major conclusions of the investigations are (a) compaction energy increases with increase in clay fraction of the soil mix and it is sensitive to density of the CSRE wall, (b) compaction energy varies between 0.033 MJ/m(3) and 0.36 MJ/m(3) for the range of densities and cement contents attempted, (c) energy expenditure in the compaction process is negligible when compared to energy content of the cement and (d) total embodied energy in CSRE walls increases linearly with the increase in cement content and is in the range of 0.4-0.5 GJ/m(3) for cement content in the rage of 6-8%. Highly structured small peptides are the major toxic constituents of the venom of cone snails, a family of widely distributed predatory marine molluscs. These animals use the venom for rapid prey immobilization. The peptide components in the venom target a wide variety of membrane-bound ion channels and receptors. Many have been found to be highly selective for a diverse range of mammalian ion channels and receptors associated with pain-signaling pathways. Their small size, structural stability, and target specificity make them attractive pharmacologic agents. A select number of laboratories mainly from the United States, Europe, Australia, Israel, and China have been engaged in intense drug discovery programs based on peptides from a few snail species. Coastal India has an estimated 20-30% of the known cone species; however, few serious studies have been reported so far. We have begun a comprehensive program for the identification and characterization of peptides from cone snails found in Indian Coastal waters. This presentation reviews our progress over the last 2 years. As expected from the evolutionary history of these venom components, our search has yielded novel peptides of therapeutic promise from the new species that we have studied.

The viscosity of five binary gas mixtures - namely, oxygen-hydrogen, oxygen-nitrogen, oxygen-carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide-nitrogen, carbon dioxide-hydrogen - and two ternary mixtures - oxygen-nitrogen-carbon dioxide and oxygen-hydrogen-carbon dioxide - were determined at ambient temperature and pressure using an oscillating disk viscometer. The theoretical expressions of several investigators were in good agreement with the experimental results obtained with this viscometer. In the case of the ternary gas mixture oxygen-carbon dioxide-nitrogen, as long as the volumetric ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide in the mixture was maintained at 11 to 8, the viscosity of the ternary mixture at ambient temperature and pressure remained constant irrespective of the percentage of nitrogen present in the mixture.

Experiments are performed to determine the mass and stiffness variations along the wing of the blowfly Calliphora. The results are obtained for a pairs of wings of 10 male flies and fresh wings are used. The wing is divided into nine locations along the span and seven locations along the chord based on venation patterns. The length and mass of the sections is measured and the mass per unit length is calculated. The bending stiffness measurements are taken at three locations, basal (near root), medial and distal (near tip) of the fly wing. Torsional stiffness measurements are also made and the elastic axis of the wing is approximately located. The experimental data is then used for structural modeling of the wing as a stepped cantilever beam with nine spanwise sections of varying mass per unit lengths, flexural rigidity (EI) and torsional rigidity (GJ) values. Inertial values of nine sections are found to approximately vary according to an exponentially decreasing law over the nine sections from root to tip and it is used to calculate an approximate value of Young's modulus of the wing biomaterial. Shear modulus is obtained assuming the wing biomaterial to be isotropic. Natural frequencies, both in bending and torsion, are obtained by solving the homogeneous part of the respective governing differential equations using the finite element method. The results provide a complete analysis of Calliphora wing structure and also provide guidelines for the biomimetic structural design of insect-scale flapping wings.

To understand the effect of molecular weight and branching on the heats of vaporization (AH,) and their flow behavior, AH, and viscosity (7) were measured at different temperatures in the high molecular weight ester series: linear flexible di-n-alkyl sebacates and compact branched triglycerides with molecular weight ranging from 300 to 900. AHv" values (AHv corrected to 298 K) have been obtained with experimental AH, and also computed according to the group additivity method; a smaller-CH,- group value of 3.8 kJ mol-' compared to the normal value of 5.0 kJ mol-' is found to give good agreement with the experimental data (within 2-5% error). Both ester series have the same AH," irrespective of their molecular features, namely, shape, flexibility, and polarity, suggesting the coiling of the molecules during vaporization. The segmental motion of these ester series during their flow and its dependence on their molecular features unlike AH,' are demonstrated by the correlation of the enthalpy of activation for viscous flow (AH*) and the ratio AE,/AH* = n (AE, is the energy of vaporization) with molecular weight.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against secreted hemagglutinin (H) protein of rinderpest virus (RPV) expressed by a recombinant baculovirus were generated to characterize the antigenic sites on H protein and regions of functional significance. Three of the mAbs displayed hemagglutination inhibition activity and these mAbs were unable to neutralize virus infectivity. Western immunoblot analysis of overlapping deletion mutants indicated that three mAbs recognize antigenic regions at the extreme carboxy terminus (between amino acids 569 and 609) and the fourth mAb between amino acids 512 and 568. Using synthetic peptides, aa 569-577 and 575-583 were identified as the epitopes for E2G4 and D2F4, respectively. The epitopic domains of A12A9 and E2B6 mAbs were mapped to regions encompassing aa 527-554 and 588-609. Two epitopes spanning the extreme carboxy terminal region of aa 573 to 587 and 588 to 609 were shown to be immunodominant employing a competitive ELISA with polyclonal sera form vaccinated cattle. The D2F4 mAb which recognizes a unique epitope on RPV-H is not present on the closely related peste des petits ruminant virus FIN protein and this mAb could serve as a tool in the seromonitoring program after rinderpest vaccination. This article presents the analysis of ultra wide band (UWB) filler designed using a symmetrical three parallel coupled line resonator in low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) medium: The ground plane with an aperture incorporated in it improves the coupling. Based on circuit models, the designed UWB filter has been analyzed, and the results have been confirmed by experiments. The filter has been realized with Dupont LTCC tape DuPont 951 (that has dielectric constant of 7.8). Maximum insertion loss of the experimental filter is 1.5 dB. The group variation over the pass band of the filter is within 0.2 us. Dimensions of the experimental LTCC filter are 20 x 10 x 0.72 mm. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper reports on our study of the edge of the 2/5 fractional quantum Hall state, which is more complicated than the edge of the 1/3 state because of the presence of edge sectors corresponding to different partitions of composite fermions in the lowest two Lambda levels. The addition of an electron at the edge is a nonperturbative process and it is not a priori obvious in what manner the added electron distributes itself over these sectors. We show, from a microscopic calculation, that when an electron is added at the edge of the ground state in the [N(1), N(2)] sector, where N(1) and N(2) are the numbers of composite fermions in the lowest two Lambda levels, the resulting state lies in either [N(1) + 1, N(2)] or [N(1), N(2) + 1] sectors; adding an electron at the edge is thus equivalent to adding a composite fermion at the edge. The coupling to other sectors of the form [N(1) + 1 + k, N(2) - k], k integer, is negligible in the asymptotically low-energy limit. This study also allows a detailed comparison with the two-boson model of the 2/5 edge. We compute the spectral weights and find that while the individual spectral weights are complicated and nonuniversal, their sum is consistent with an effective two-boson description of the 2/5 edge.

The curvature related locking phenomena in the out-of-plane deformation of Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli curved beam elements are demonstrated and a novel approach is proposed to circumvent them. Both flexure and Torsion locking phenomena are noticed in Timoshenko beam and torsion locking phenomenon alone in Euler-Bernoulli beam. Two locking-free curved beam finite element models are developed using coupled polynomial displacement field interpolations to eliminate these locking effects. The coupled polynomial interpolation fields are derived independently for Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli beam elements using the governing equations. The presented of penalty terms in the couple displacement fields incorporates the flexure-torsion coupling and flexure-shear coupling effects in an approximate manner and produce no spurious constraints in the extreme geometric limits of flexure, torsion and shear stiffness. the proposed couple polynomial finite element models, as special cases, reduce to the conventional Timoshenko beam element and Euler-Bernoulli beam element, respectively. These models are shown to perform consistently over a wide range of flexure-to-shear (EI/GA) and flexure-to-torsion (EI/GJ) stiffness ratios and are inherently devoid of flexure, torsion and shear locking phenomena. The efficacy, accuracy and reliability of the proposed models to straight and curved beam applications are demonstrated through numerical examples. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The mass flow rate, (m) over dot, associated with the lateral outflow of dry, cohesionless granular material through circular orifices of diameter D made in vertical walls of silos was measured experimentally in order to determine also the influence of the wall thickness of the silo, w. Geometrical arguments, based on the outflow happening, are given in order to have a general correlation for (m) over dot embracing both quantities, D and w. The angle of repose appears to be an important characterization factor in these kinds of flows.
