A CMOS gas sensor array platform with digital read-out containing 27 sensor pixels and a reference pixel is presented. A signal conditioning circuit at each pixel includes digitally programmable gain stages for sensor signal amplification followed by a second order continuous time delta sigma modulator for digitization. Each sensor pixel can be functionalized with a distinct sensing material that facilitates transduction based on impedance change. Impedance spectrum (up to 10 KHz) of the sensor is obtained off-chip by computing the fast Fourier transform of sensor and reference pixel outputs. The reference pixel also compensates for the phase shift introduced by the signal processing circuits. The chip also contains a temperature sensor with digital readout for ambient temperature measurement. A sensor pixel is functionalized with polycarbazole conducting polymer for sensing volatile organic gases and measurement results are presented. The chip is fabricated in a 0.35 CMOS technology and requires a single step post processing for functionalization. It consumes 57 mW from a 3.3 V supply.

Room temperature operation, low detection limit and fast response time are highly desirable for a wide range of gas sensing applications. However, the available gas sensors suffer mainly from high temperature operation or external stimulation for response/recovery. Here, we report an ultrasensitive-flexible-silver-nanoparticle based nanocomposite resistive sensor for ammonia detection and established the sensing mechanism. We show that the nanocomposite can detect ammonia as low as 500 parts-per-trillion at room temperature in a minute time. Furthermore, the evolution of ammonia from different chemical reactions has been demonstrated using the nanocomposite sensor as an example. Our results demonstrate the proof-of-concept for the new detector to be used in several applications including homeland security, environmental pollution and leak detection in research laboratories and many others.

Transparent conducting ZnO films were prepared at substrate temperature 400 degrees C with different film thicknesses by nebulizer spray pyrolysis method on glass substrates. XRD studies reveal that the films are polycrystalline in nature having hexagonal crystal structure with preferred grain orientations along (0 0 2) and (1 0 1) directions. The crystallite size increases along (0 0 2) plane with the thickness increase and attains a maximum 109 nm for 913 nm film thickness. Analysis of structural parameters indicates that the films having thickness 913 nm are found to have minimum dislocation density and strain values. The HRSEM measurements show that the surface morphology of the films also changes with film thickness. EDAX estimates the average atomic percentage ratio of Zn and O in the ZnO films. Optical studies reveal the band gap energy decrease from 3.27 to 3.14 eV with increase of film thickness. Room temperature PL spectra show the near-band-edge emission and deep-level emission due to the presence of defects in the ZnO thin films. Impedance spectroscopy analysis indicates that grain boundary resistance decreases with the increasing ammonia concentration up to 500 ppm and the maximum sensitivity is found to be 1.7 for 500 ppm of ammonia. High sensitivity gas sensors are typically realized using metal catalysts and nanostructured materials, utilizing non-conventional synthesis and processing techniques, incompatible with on-chip integration of sensor arrays. In this work, we report a new device architecture, suspended core-shell Pt-PtOx nanostructure that is fully CMOS-compatible. The device consists of a metal gate core, embedded within a partially suspended semiconductor shell with source and drain contacts in the anchored region. The reduced work function in suspended region, coupled with builtin electric field of metal-semiconductor junction, enables the modulation of drain current, due to room temperature Redox reactions on exposure to gas. The device architecture is validated using Pt-PtO2 suspended nanostructure for sensing H-2 down to 200 ppb under room temperature. By exploiting catalytic activity of PtO2, in conjunction with its p-type semiconducting behavior, we demonstrate about two orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity and limit of detection, compared to the sensors reported in recent literature. Pt thin film, deposited on SiO2, is lithographically patterned and converted into suspended Pt-PtO2 sensor, in a single step isotropic SiO2 etching. An optimum design space for the sensor is elucidated with the initial Pt film thickness ranging between 10 nm and 30 nm, for low power (< 5 mu W), room temperature operation. The design and implementation of a complete gas sensor system for liquified petroleum gas (LPG) gas sensing are presented. The system consists of a SnO2 transducer, a lowcost heater, an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) with front-end interface circuitry, and a microcontroller interface for data logging. The ASIC includes a relaxation-oscillator-based heater driver circuit that is capable of controlling the sensor operating temperature from 100degC to 425degC. The sensor readout circuit in the ASIC, which is based on the resistance to time conversion technique, has been designed to measure the gas sensor response over three orders of resistance change during its interaction with gases.

We present a low power gas sensor system on CMOS platform consisting of micromachined polysilicon microheater, temperature controller circuit, resistance readout circuit and SnO2 transducer film. The design criteria for different building blocks of the system is elaborated The microheaters are optimized for temperature uniformity as well as static and dynamic response. The electrical equivalent model for the microheater is derived by extracting thermal and mechanical poles through extensive laser doppler vibrometer measurements. The temperature controller and readout circuit are realized on 130nm CMOS technology The temperature controller re-uses the heater as a temperature sensor and controls the duty cycle of the waveform driving the gate of the power MOSFET which supplies heater current. The readout circuit, with subthreshold operation of the MOSFETs, is based oil resistance to time period conversion followed by frequency to digital converter Subthreshold operatin of MOSFETs coupled with sub-ranging technique, achieves ultra low power consumption with more than five orders of magnitude dynamic range RF sputtered SnO2 film is optimized for its microstructure to achive high sensitivity to sense LPG gas.

This paper describes the design and development of a thermoelectric gas sensor suitable for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In order to enhance the seebeck coefficient of the sensor, we have deposited chromium metal films on a limited area of the glass substrate. Tin oxide thin film was deposited on top of these metal films. The resulting metal/semiconductor film exhibits a high seebeck coefficient of 400 mu V/ degrees C. Platinum catalyst film deposited on the oxide film to create the necessary temperature gradient resulted in further enhancement in the sensitivity of the sensor to target gases. The sensor shows high sensitivity to ppm-change in the concentration of target hydrocarbons at a relatively low temperature of 120 degrees C.

Room-temperature sensing characteristics for H-2, ethanol, NH3, H2S and water have been investigated with thick-film sensors based on GaN nanoparticles, prepared by a simple chemical route. In general, GaN nanoparticles exhibit satisfactory sensor properties for these gases and vapors even at room temperature. The sensitivity for ethanol is found to be highest, the sensitivity and recovery times being smallest. Gas sensor properties of GaN seem to be related to intrinsic defects, which act as sorption sites for the gas molecules. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polypyrrole exhibits reversible changes in their direct current resistance on exposure to organic volatiles. However, one needs to employ an array of such sensors to discriminate organic volatiles present in a mixture. Hence, polypyrrole based gas sensor is designed for the detection and discrimination of different organic volatiles. Multi frequency impedance measurement technique is used to detect the organic vapors, such as acetone, ethanol and Isopropyl alcohol, in the gas phase, over a frequency range 10 Hz to 2 MHz. The sensor response is monitored by measuring the changes in its capacitance, resistance and the dissipation factor upon exposure to organic volatiles. It is observed that the capacitive property of the sensor is more sensitive to these volatiles than its resistive property. Each volatile responds to the sensor in terms of dissipation factor at specific frequency and found that the peak magnitude has a linear relationship with their concentrations.
