Thermoelectric (TE) conversion of waste heat into useful electricity demands optimized thermal and electrical transport in the leg material over a wide temperature range. In order to gain a reasonably high figure of merit (ZT) as well as high thermal electric conversion efficiency, various conditions of the starting material were studied: industrially produced skutterudite powders of p-type DDy(Fe1-xCox)(4)Sb-12 (DD: didymium) and n-type (Mm, Sm)(y)Co4Sb12 (Mm: mischmetal) were used. After a rather fast reaction-melting technique, the bulk was crushed and sieved with various strainers in order to obtain particles below the respective mesh sizes, followed by ball-milling under three different conditions. The dependence of the TE properties (after hot pressing) on the micro/nanosized particles, grains and crystallites was investigated. Optimized conditions resulted in an increase of ZT for bulk material to current record-high values: from ZT similar to 1.1 to ZT similar to 1.3 at 775 K for p-type and from ZT similar to 1.0 to ZT similar to 1.6 at 800 K for n-type, resulting in respective efficiencies (300-850 K) of eta > 13% and eta similar to 16%. M r = 188.22, monoclinic, P21/n, a = 6.219 (2), b= 10.508 (2), c=7.339 (1)A, t= 107.64 (2) °, V= 457 ,/k 3, Z = 2, D m - - 1.360 (3), D x = 1.366 (2)Mgm -3, ~,(MoKa) = 0.7107/~, #= 0.053 mm -I, F(000) = 200, T= 293 K. Final R = 5.8% for 614 significant reflections. The molecule, which does not possess a centre of symmetry, occupies a crystallographic centre of symmetry because of the statistical enantiomeric and rotational disorder. Latticeenergy calculations, based on van der Waals attractive and repulsive potentials, clearly show minima at the observed disordered positions.

Proximity of molecules is a crucial factor in many solid- state photochemical processes.'S2 The biomolecular photodimerization reactions in the solid state depend on the relative geometry of reactant molecules in the crystal lattice with center-to-center distance of nearest neighbor double bonds of the order of ca. 4 A. This fact emanates from the incisive studies of Schmidt and Cohen.2 One of the two approaches to achieve this distance requirement is the so-called "Crystal-Engineering" of structures, which essentially involves the introduction of certain functional groups that display in-plane interstacking interactions (Cl...Cl, C-He-0, etc.) in the crystal The chloro group is by far the most successful in promoting the /3- packing m ~ d e ,th~o,u~gh recent studies have shown its limitations? Another approach involves the use of constrained media in which the reactants could hopefully be aligned.

In the title compound, C28H21O4P, the eight-membered heterocyclic dioxaphosphocine ring has a distorted boat conformation, with the phosphoryl O atom axial and the phenoxy group equatorial. The P=O distance is 1.451 (1) Angstrom and the average length of the three P-O bonds is 1.573 (1) Angstrom. The phenyl ring is nearly perpendicular to both naphthalene planes, making dihedral angles of 91.30 (3) and 97.65 (5)degrees with them. The angle between the two naphthalene planes is 67.73 (3)degrees. The crystal structure is stabilized by van der Waals interactions.

Synthesis of two designed hairpin peptides on 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate crosslinked polystyrene support using the standard solid phase methodology is described. Both the peptides are obtained in high yield and purity. The new polymeric system is an ideal support for the synthesis of hairpin peptides, which is a very difficult task by the solid phase method.

Final R = 0.064 for 2150 observed reflections. The niflumic acid anions consist essentially of three planar groupings, namely, two six-membered rings and a carboxylate group attached to one of them. The invariant common structural features observed in the crystal structures of fenamates, namely, the coplanarity of the carboxyl group and the six-membered ring bearing it, and the internal hydrogen bond between the carboxyl group and the imino N atom that bridges the two sixmembered rings, are retained in the complex. The amino N atom is gauche with respect to the terminal hydroxyl group in the ethanolamine cation. The complexation between the two molecules is achieved through ionic and hydrogen-bonded interactions involving the carboxylate group in niflumic acid.

Hyoscyamine 60-hydroxylase (H6H: EC 1.14.11.11), a key enzyme at the terminal step of tropane alkaloid biosynthesis, converts hyoscyamine to scopolamine. The accumulation of scopolamine in different organs, in particular the aerial parts for storage, is subject to the expression of hyoscyamine 6-phydroxylase as well as its transport from the site of synthesis. To understand the molecular basis of this regulation, we have analyzed, in parallel, the relative levels of hyoscyamine and scopolamine, and the accumulation of H6H (both protein and transcript) in leaves, stems and roots of D. metel. The root, stem and leaf tissues all contain about 0.51-0.65 mg g(-1) dry weight of scopolamine. Hyoscyamine content was extremely low in leaf and stem tissues and was about 0.28 mg g(-1) dry weight in the root tissue. H6H protein and its transcript were found only in roots but not in the aerial parts viz. stems and leaves. The immunolocalization studies performed on leaf, stem, root as well as hairy root tissues showed that H6H was present only in the pericycle cells of young lateral and hairy roots. These studies suggest that the conversion of hyoscyamine to scopolamine takes place in the root pericycle cells, and the alkaloid biosynthesized in the roots gets translocated to the aerial parts in D. metel. Raman spectra of cyclohexane 1,4-dione (I), in chloroform, benzene and water solutions have been recorded. Temperature effect on the spectrum has been studied. The IR spectra of I and its octadeutero analogue in the solid state have also been studied. The spectra have been found on the basis of selection rules applicable for Raman and IR spectra, to be consistent with a single conformer of C2 symmetry. Plausible causes of conformational preference have been discussed.

A new strategy for the total synthesis of methyl 8-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-7-oxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydro-s-indacene-4-carboxylate 4, a key intermediate in the synthesis of illudalanes, is reported. The key step in this strategy is a new method of preparation of indanones from tetralones. Thus, the furfurylidene derivative of 6-methoxy-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1-(2H)-one is oxidised to the dicarboxylic acid 9a which is cyclodehydrated to methyl 7-methoxy-1-oxoindan-4-carboxylate 10. Similar reactions on the tetrahydronaphthalenone 25, obtained from 6-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-7-carbaldehyde 11 by sequential transformations including a regiospecific benzylic oxidation resulted in the hexahydro-s-indacenone 4, thus completing a formal synthesis of illudinine 1.

We analyze the origin of de-enhancement for a number of vibrational modes in the 2(1)A(g) excited state of trans-azobenzene. We have used the time-dependent wave packet analysis of the RR intensities by including the multimode damping effects in the calculation. This avoids the use of unrealistically large values for the damping parameter. It is concluded that the de-enhancement is caused by the interference between the two uncoupled electronic states, and that the intensities observed under the so-called symmetry forbidden 2(1)A(g) <-- 1(1)A(g) transition are purely due to resonance excitation. It is also observed that the use of the time-dependent approach to study the de-enhancement effects caused by multiple electronic states on the RR intensities is not necessarily useful if one is interested in the structural dynamics.

Thermal decomposition of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) has been studied in the temperature range of 10501175 K behind reflected shock waves in a single pulse shock tube. The unimolecular elimination of HCl is found to be the major channel through which 1,2-DCE decomposes under these conditions. The rate constant for the unimolecular elimination of HCl from 1,2-dichloroethane is found to be 10(13.98+/-0.80) exp(-57.8+/-2.0/RT) s(-1), where the activation energy is given in kcal mol(-1) and is very close to that value for CH3CH2Cl (EC). Ab initio (HF and MP2) and DFT calculations have been carried out to find the activation barrier and the structure of the transition state for this reaction channel from both EC and 1,2-DCE. The preexponential factors calculated at various levels of theory (BF/6-311++G**, MP2/6-311++G**, and B3LYP/6-311++G**) are (approximate to10(15) s(-1)) significantly larger than the experimental results. If the torsional mode in the ground state is treated as free internal rotation the preexponential factors reduce significantly, giving excellent agreement with experimental values. The DFT results are in excellent (fortuitous?) agreement with the experimental value for activation energy for 1,2-DCE while the MP2 and HF results seem to overestimate the barrier. However, DFT results for EC is 4.5 kcal mol(-1) less than the previously reported experimental values. At all levels, theory predicts an increase in HCI elimination barrier on beta-Cl substitution on EC.

Polyaniline and graphene oxide composite on activated carbon cum reduced graphene oxide-supported supercapacitor electrodes are fabricated and electrochemically characterized in a three-electrode cell assembly. Attractive supercapacitor performance, namely high-power capability and cycling stability for graphene oxide/polyaniline composite, is observed owing to the layered and porous-polymeric-structured electrodes. Based on the materials characterization data in a three-electrode cell assembly, 1 V supercapacitor devices are developed and performance tested. A comparative study has also been conducted for polyaniline and graphene oxide/polyaniline composite-based 1 V supercapacitors for comprehending the synergic effect of graphene oxide and polyaniline. Graphene oxide/polyaniline composite-based capacitor that exhibits about 100 F g(-1) specific capacitance with faradaic efficiency in excess of 90% has its energy and power density values of 14 Wh kg(-1) and 72 kW kg(-1), respectively. Cycle-life data for over 1000 cycles reflect 10% capacitance degradation for graphene oxide/polyaniline composite supercapacitor.
