A study of the deposition of aluminium oxide films by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition from the complex aluminium acetylacetonate, in the absence of an oxidant gas, has been carried out. Depositions on to Si(100), stainless steel, and TiN-coated cemented carbide are found to be smooth, shiny, and blackish. SIMS, XPS and TEM analyses reveal that films deposited at temperatures as low as 600 degreesC contain small crystallites Of kappa-Al2O3, embedded in an amorphous matrix rich in graphitic carbon. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveal a surface morphology made up of spherulites that suggests that film growth might involve a melting process. A nucleation and growth mechanism, involving the congruent melting clusters of precursor molecules on the hot substrate surface, is therefore invoked to explain these observations. An effort has been made experimentally to verify this proposed mechanism. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Silver Indium Di-sulfide (AgInS2) thin films are deposited using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique and the effect of substrate temperature (T-s) on film growth is studied by varying the temperature from 250 to 400 degrees C. From the structural analysis, orthorhombic AgInS2 phase is identified with preferential orientation along (002) plane. Further analysis with Raman revealed the coexistence of Cu-Au ordered and chalcopyrite structures in the films. Stoichiometric films are obtained at T-s of 300 degrees C. Above 300 degrees C, the film conductivity changed from p to n-type and the grain size decreased. The band gap of AgInS2 films varied from 1.55 to 1.89 eV and absorption coefficient is found to be >10(4) cm(-1). The films have sheet resistance in the range of 0.05 to 1300 Omega/square Both p and n type films are prepared through this technique without any external doping. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Stress is inevitable during thin film growth. It is demonstrated here that the growth stress has a significant effect on the dielectric constant of high-k thin films. ZrO2 thin films were deposited on Ge by reactive direct current sputtering. Stress in these films was measured using in-situ curvature measurement tool. The growth stress was tuned from -2.8 to 0.1 GPa by controlling deposition rate. Dielectric permittivity of ZrO2 depends on temperature, phase, and stress. The correct combination of parameters-phase, texture, and stress-is shown to yield films with an equivalent oxide thickness of 8 angstrom. Growth stresses are shown to affect the dielectric constant both directly by affecting lattice parameter and indirectly through the effect on phase stability of ZrO2. (c) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

Growing crystals with selected structure and preferred orientations oil seed substrates is crucial for a wide variety of applications. Although epitaxial or textured film growth of a polymorph whose structure resembles the seed crystal structure is well-known, growing oriented nanocrystal arrays or more than one polymorph, selectable one at a time, from the same seed has not been realized. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the exclusive growth of oriented nanocrystal arrays of two titania polymorphs from a titanate crystal by chemically activating respective polymorph-mimicking crystallographic facets in the seed. The oriented titania nanocrystal arrays exhibit significantly higher photocatalytic activity than randomly oriented polymorphs. Our approach of chemically sculpting oriented nanocrystal polymorph arrays could be adapted to other materials systems to obtain novel properties.

The time evolution of the film thickness and domain formation of octadecylamine molecules adsorbed oil a mica surface is investigated Using atomic force microscopy. The adsorbed Film thickness is determined by measuring the height profile across the mica-amine interface of a mica surface partially immersed in a 15 mM solution of octadecylamine in chloroform. Using this novel procedure, adsorption of amine on mica is found to occur in three distinct stages, with morphologically distinct domain Formation and growth occurring during each stage. In the first stage, where adsorption is primarily in the thin-film regime, all average Film thickness of 0.2 (+/- 0.3) nm is formed for exposure times below 30 s and 0.8 (+/- 0.2) nm for 60 s of immersion time. During this stage, large sample spanning domains are observed. The second stage, which occurs between 60-300 s, is associated with it regime of rapid film growth, and the film thickness increases from about 0.8 to 25 nm during this stage. Once the thick-film regime is established, further exposure to the amine solution results in all increase in the domain area, and it regime of lateral domain growth is observed. In this stage, the domain area coverage grows from 38 to 75%, and the FTIR spectra reveal an increased level of crystallinity in the film. Using it diffusion-controlled model and it two-step Langmuir isotherm, the time evolution of the film growth is quantitatively captured. The model predicts the time at which the thin to thick film transition occurs as well its the time required for complete film growth at longer times. The Ward-Tordai equation is also solved to determine the model parameters in the monolayer (thin-film) regime, which occurs during the initial stages of film growth.

Polycrystalline SrTiO3 films were prepared by pulsed excimer laser ablation on Si and Pt coated Si substrates. Several growth parameters were varied including ablation fluence, pressure, and substrate temperature. The structural studies indicated the presence of [100] and [110] oriented growth after annealing by rapid thermal annealing at 600-degrees-C for 60 s. Deposition at either lower pressures or at higher energy densities encouraged film growth with slightly preferred orientation. The scanning electron microscopy studies showed the absence of any significant particulates on the film surface. Dielectric studies indicated a dielectric constant of 225, a capacitance density of 3.2 fF/mum2, and a charge density of 40 fC/mum for films of 1000 nm thick. The dc conductivity studies on these films suggested a bulk limited space charge conduction in the high field regime, while the low electric fields induced an ohmic conduction. Brief time dependent dielectric breakdown studies on these films, under a field of 250 kV/cm for 2 h, did not exhibit any breakdown, indicating good dielectric strength.

The optimisation is reported on the design of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering cathodes. For the study, a planar circular cathode backed by a double-coil electromagnet (compatible for a 100 mm diameter target) was developed. The variation of the structure and strength of the magnetic field in front of the target was investigated for different current combinations in the electromagnetic coils, and its effect on the sputtering process was analysed. The observations on the magnetic field geometry revealed some interesting features, such as the balancing point of the fields along the axis (null-point), and the zero axial region over the target surface (B-z = 0 ring). The positions of both could be controlled by adjusting the ratio of the electric current in the coils. The magnetic field null-point could be used as a reference for the region of homogeneous film growth. The B-z = 0 ring was the location where the glow discharge concentrated (or where the maximum target erosion occurred). The diameter of the ring determined the area covered by the discharge and thus the sputtering efficiency. The optimum substrate position can be fixed according to the position of the null-point and optimisation of sputtering can be achieved by adjusting the diameter of the B-z = 0 ring. The results of this study should be helpful in the designing of an ideal UBM using permanent magnets as well as electromagnets. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the present work, we report the deposition of zirconia thin films on Si(100) at various substrate temperatures by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Three different zirconium complexes, viz., tetrakis(2,4-pentadionato)zirconium(IV), [Zr(pd)4], tetrakis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptadionato)zirconium(IV), [Zr(thd)4], and tetrakis(t-butyl-3-oxo-butanoato)zirconium(IV), [Zr(tbob)4] are used as precursors. The relationship between the molecular structures of the precursors and their thermal properties, as examined by TG/DTA is presented. The films deposited using these precursors have distinctly different morphology, though all of them are of the cubic phase. The films grown from Zr(thd)4 are well crystallized, showing faceted growth at 575°C, whereas the films grown from Zr(pd)4 and Zr(tbob)4 are not well crystallized, and display cracks. These differences in the observed microstructure may be attributed to the different chemical decomposition pathways of the precursors during the film growth, which influence the nucleation and the growth processes. This is also evidenced by the different kinetics of growth from these three precursors under otherwise identical CVD conditions. The details of thin film deposition, and film microstructure analysis by XRD and SEM is presented. The dielectric behavior of the films deposited from different precursors, as studied by C-V measurements, are compared.

Novel, volatile, stable, oxo-β-ketoesterate complexes of titanium, whose synthesis requires only an inert atmosphere, as opposed to a glove box, have been developed. Using one of the complexes as the precursor, thin films of TiO2 have been deposited on glass substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at temperatures ranging from 400°C to 525°C and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. All the films grown in this temperature range are very smooth; those grown above 480°C consist of nearly monodisperse, nanocrystals of the anatase phase. Optical studies show the bandgaps in the range 3.4–3.7 eV for films grown at different temperatures. Thin films of anatase TiO2 have also been grown by spin-coating technique using another ketoesterate complex of titanium, demonstrating that the newly developed complexes can be successfully used for thin film growth by various chemical routes.

The possible chemical reactions that take place during the growth of single crystal films of silicon on sapphire (SOS) are analyzed thermodynamically. The temperature for the growth of good quality epitaxial films is dependent on the extent of water vapor present in the carrier gas. The higher the water vapor content the higher the temperature needed to grow SOS films. Due to the interaction of silicon with sapphire at elevated temperatures, SOS films are doped with aluminum. The extent of doping is dependent on the conditions of film growth. The doping by aluminum from the substrate increases with increasing growth temperatures and decreasing growth rates. The equilibrium concentrations of aluminum at the silicon-sapphire interface are calculated as a function of deposition temperature, assuming that SiO2 or Al6Si2O13 are the products of reaction. It is most likely that the product could be a solid solutio n of Al2O3 in SiO2. The total amount of aluminum released due to the interaction between silicon and sapphire will account only for the formation of not more than one monolayer of reaction product unless the films are annealed long enough at elevated temperatures. This value is in good agreement with the recently reported observations employing high resolution transmission electron microscopy.

The present work is aimed at studying the influence of electrolyte chemistry on the voltage-time (V-T) response characteristics, phase structure, surface morphology, film growth rate and corrosion properties of titania films fabricated by micro arc oxidation (MAO) on Cp Ti. The titania films were developed with a sodium phosphate based reference electrolyte comprising the additives such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and urea (CO(NH2)(2)). The phase composition, surface morphology, elemental composition and thickness of the films were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The corrosion characteristics of the fabricated films were studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) condition by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. In addition, the corrosion characteristics of the grown films were analyzed by EIS curve fitting and equivalent circuit modeling. Salt spray test (SST) as per ASTM B 117 standard was also conducted to verify the corrosion resistance of the grown films. The XRD results showed that the titania films were composed of both anatase and rutile phases at different proportions. Besides, the films grown in carbonate and nitrite containing electrolyte systems showed an enhanced growth of their rutile phase in the 1 0 1] direction which could be attributed to the modifications introduced in the growth process by the abundant oxygen available during the process. The SEM-EDX and elemental mapping results showed that the respective electrolyte borne elements were incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the grown films under study, the film developed in carbonate containing electrolyte system exhibited considerably improved corrosion resistance due to suitable modifications in its structural and morphological characteristics. The rate of anatase to rutile phase transformation and the rutile growth direction were strongly influenced by the abundant oxidizing species available during the film growth process. We have studied the influence of Al doping on the microstructural, optical, and electrical properties of spray-deposited WO3 thin films. XRD analyses confirm that all the films are of polycrystalline WO3 in nature, possessing monoclinic structure. EDX profiles of the Al-doped films show aluminum peaks implying incorporation of Al ions into WO3 lattice. On Al doping, the average crystallite size decreases due to increase in the density of nucleation centers at the time of film growth. The observed variation in the lattice parameter values on Al doping is attributed to the incorporation of Al ions into WO3 lattice. Enhancement in the direct optical band gap compared to the undoped film has been observed on Al doping due to decrease in the width of allowed energy states near the conduction band edge. The refractive indices of the films follow the Cauchy relation of normal dispersion. Electrical resistivity compared to the undoped film has been found to increase on Al doping.

Silver indium sulfide (AgInS2) thin films are deposited by sequential sputtering of metallic precursor Ag/In] followed by sulfurization. Effect of substrate temperature (Tsub) during sulfurization process on the film growth is studied by varying the substrate temperature from 350 to 500 degrees C. Films prepared above 350 degrees C showed a mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases of AgInS2 with tetragonal phase being dominant. Better crystalline, nearly stoichiometric and p-type films are obtained at a substrate temperature of 500 degrees C. The characteristic A(1) mode of AgInS2 chalcopyrite structure is observed in the Raman spectra at 274 cm(-1) for the films prepared above 350 degrees C. The grain size of the film increases from 489 to 895 nm with the increase in substrate temperature. The binding energies of the constituent elements are determined using XPS. The band gap of AgInS2 films is in the range of 1.64-1.92 eV and the absorption coefficient is found to be >10(4) cm(-1). Preliminary studies on the AgInS2/ZnS solar cell showed an efficiency of 0.3%. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Antiferroelectric lead zirconate (PZ) thin films were deposited by pulsed laser ablation on platinum-coated silicon substrates. Films showed a polycrystalline pervoskite structure upon annealing at 650 degrees C for 5-10 min. Dielectric properties were investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. The dielectric constant of PZ films was 220 at 100 kHz with a dissipation factor of 0.03. The electric field induced transformation from the antiferroelectric phase to the ferroelectric phase was observed through the polarization change, using a Sawyer-Tower circuit. The maximum polarization value obtained was 40 mu C/cm(2). The average fields to excite the ferroelectric state, and to reverse to the antiferroelectric state were 71 and 140 kV/cm, respectively. The field induced switching was also observed through double maxima in capacitance-voltage characteristics. Leakage current was studied in terms of current versus time and current versus voltage measurements. A leakage current density of 5x10(-7) A/cm(2) at 3 V, for a film of 0.7 mu m thickness, was noted at room temperature. The trap mechanism was investigated in detail in lead zirconate thin films based upon a space charge limited conduction mechanism. The films showed a backward switching time of less than 90 ns at room temperature.

Zinc film containing hexagonal plate stack and tower-like micro structures were grown on Si substrates at high temperature by thermal evaporation. Thermal oxidation studies on these micro structures have shown that ZnO nanoneedles selectively grow from the facets of the zinc microstructure at temperature above 300 degrees C in atmosphere TEM analysis showed that single crystalline and bicrystalline nanoneedles were formed in this oxidation process and the growth direction of these nanoneedles was identified along the [1 1 (2) overbar 0]. Based on the structural studies and morphological observation, we have proposed a possible mechanism for the selective growth of ZnO nanoneedles during thermal oxidation.
