The Reeb graph tracks topology changes in level sets of a scalar function and finds applications in scientific visualization and geometric modeling. We describe an algorithm that constructs the Reeb graph of a Morse function defined on a 3-manifold. Our algorithm maintains connected components of the two dimensional levels sets as a dynamic graph and constructs the Reeb graph in O(nlogn+nlogg(loglogg)3) time, where n is the number of triangles in the tetrahedral mesh representing the 3-manifold and g is the maximum genus over all level sets of the function. We extend this algorithm to construct Reeb graphs of d-manifolds in O(nlogn(loglogn)3) time, where n is the number of triangles in the simplicial complex that represents the d-manifold. Our result is a significant improvement over the previously known O(n2) algorithm. Finally, we present experimental results of our implementation and demonstrate that our algorithm for 3-manifolds performs efficiently in practice.

This paper addresses the problem of resolving ambiguities in frequently confused online Tamil character pairs by employing script specific algorithms as a post classification step. Robust structural cues and temporal information of the preprocessed character are extensively utilized in the design of these algorithms. The methods are quite robust in automatically extracting the discriminative sub-strokes of confused characters for further analysis. Experimental validation on the IWFHR Database indicates error rates of less than 3 % for the confused characters. Thus, these post processing steps have a good potential to improve the performance of online Tamil handwritten character recognition.

In this paper we consider the problem of learning an n × n kernel matrix from m(1) similarity matrices under general convex loss. Past research have extensively studied the m = 1 case and have derived several algorithms which require sophisticated techniques like ACCP, SOCP, etc. The existing algorithms do not apply if one uses arbitrary losses and often can not handle m > 1 case. We present several provably convergent iterative algorithms, where each iteration requires either an SVM or a Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) solver for m > 1 case. One of the major contributions of the paper is to extend the well knownMirror Descent(MD) framework to handle Cartesian product of psd matrices. This novel extension leads to an algorithm, called EMKL, which solves the problem in O(m2 log n 2) iterations; in each iteration one solves an MKL involving m kernels and m eigen-decomposition of n × n matrices. By suitably defining a restriction on the objective function, a faster version of EMKL is proposed, called REKL,which avoids the eigen-decomposition. An alternative to both EMKL and REKL is also suggested which requires only an SVMsolver. Experimental results on real world protein data set involving several similarity matrices illustrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithms.

This paper describes the different types of space vector based bus clamped PWM algorithms for three level inverters. A novel bus clamp PWM algorithm for low modulation indices region is also presented. The principles and switching sequences of all the types of bus clamped algorithms for high switching frequency are presented. Synchronized version of the PWM sequences for high power applications where switching frequency is low is also presented. The implementation details on DSP based digital controller and experimental results are presented. The THD of the output waveforms is studied for the entire operating region and is compared with the conventional space vector PWM technique. The bus clamped techniques can be used to reduce the switching losses or to improve the output voltage quality or both.. Different issues dominate depending on the type of application and power rating of the inverters. The results presented in this paper can be used for judicious use of the PWM techniques, which result in improved system efficiency and performance.

We have developed an efficient fully three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction algorithm for diffuse optical tomography (DOT). The 3D DOT, a severely ill-posed problem, is tackled through a pseudodynamic (PD) approach wherein an ordinary differential equation representing the evolution of the solution on pseudotime is integrated that bypasses an explicit inversion of the associated, ill-conditioned system matrix. One of the most computationally expensive parts of the iterative DOT algorithm, the reevaluation of the Jacobian in each of the iterations, is avoided by using the adjoint-Broyden update formula to provide low rank updates to the Jacobian. In addition, wherever feasible, we have also made the algorithm efficient by integrating along the quadratic path provided by the perturbation equation containing the Hessian. These algorithms are then proven by reconstruction, using simulated and experimental data and verifying the PD results with those from the popular Gauss-Newton scheme. The major findings of this work are as follows: (i) the PD reconstructions are comparatively artifact free, providing superior absorption coefficient maps in terms of quantitative accuracy and contrast recovery; (ii) the scaling of computation time with the dimension of the measurement set is much less steep with the Jacobian update formula in place than without it; and (iii) an increase in the data dimension, even though it renders the reconstruction problem less ill conditioned and thus provides relatively artifact-free reconstructions, does not necessarily provide better contrast property recovery. For the latter, one should also take care to uniformly distribute the measurement points, avoiding regions close to the source so that the relative strength of the derivatives for measurements away from the source does not become insignificant. For compressed sensing (CS), we develop a new scheme inspired by data fusion principles. In the proposed fusion based scheme, several CS reconstruction algorithms participate and they are executed in parallel, independently. The final estimate of the underlying sparse signal is derived by fusing the estimates obtained from the participating algorithms. We theoretically analyze this fusion based scheme and derive sufficient conditions for achieving a better reconstruction performance than any participating algorithm. Through simulations, we show that the proposed scheme has two specific advantages: 1) it provides good performance in a low dimensional measurement regime, and 2) it can deal with different statistical natures of the underlying sparse signals. The experimental results on real ECG signals shows that the proposed scheme demands fewer CS measurements for an approximate sparse signal reconstruction.

We develop iterative diffraction tomography algorithms, which are similar to the distorted Born algorithms, for inverting scattered intensity data. Within the Born approximation, the unknown scattered field is expressed as a multiplicative perturbation to the incident field. With this, the forward equation becomes stable, which helps us compute nearly oscillation-free solutions that have immediate bearing on the accuracy of the Jacobian computed for use in a deterministic Gauss-Newton (GN) reconstruction. However, since the data are inherently noisy and the sensitivity of measurement to refractive index away from the detectors is poor, we report a derivative-free evolutionary stochastic scheme, providing strictly additive updates in order to bridge the measurement-prediction misfit, to arrive at the refractive index distribution from intensity transport data. The superiority of the stochastic algorithm over the GN scheme for similar settings is demonstrated by the reconstruction of the refractive index profile from simulated and experimentally acquired intensity data. Precise experimental implementation of unitary operators is one of the most important tasks for quantum information processing. Numerical optimization techniques are widely used to find optimized control fields to realize a desired unitary operator. However, finding high-fidelity control pulses to realize an arbitrary unitary operator in larger spin systems is still a difficult task. In this work, we demonstrate that a combination of the GRAPE algorithm, which is a numerical pulse optimization technique, and a unitary operator decomposition algorithm Ajoy et al., Phys. Rev. A 85, 030303 (2012)] can realize unitary operators with high experimental fidelity. This is illustrated by simulating the mirror-inversion propagator of an XY spin chain in a five-spin dipolar coupled nuclear spin system. Further, this simulation has been used to demonstrate the transfer of entangled states from one end of the spin chain to the other end.

Recently, efficient scheduling algorithms based on Lagrangian relaxation have been proposed for scheduling parallel machine systems and job shops. In this article, we develop real-world extensions to these scheduling methods. In the first part of the paper, we consider the problem of scheduling single operation jobs on parallel identical machines and extend the methodology to handle multiple classes of jobs, taking into account setup times and setup costs, The proposed methodology uses Lagrangian relaxation and simulated annealing in a hybrid framework, In the second part of the paper, we consider a Lagrangian relaxation based method for scheduling job shops and extend it to obtain a scheduling methodology for a real-world flexible manufacturing system with centralized material handling.

RNase S is a complex consisting of two proteolytic fragments of RNase A: the S peptide (residues 1-20) and S protein (residues 21-124). RNase S and RNase A have very similar X-ray structures and enzymatic activities. previous experiments have shown increased rates of hydrogen exchange and greater sensitivity to tryptic cleavage for RNase S relative to RNase A. It has therefore been asserted that the RNase S complex is considerably more dynamically flexible than RNase A. In the present study we examine the differences in the dynamics of RNaseS and RNase A computationally, by MD simulations, and experimentally, using trypsin cleavage as a probe of dynamics. The fluctuations around the average solution structure during the simulation were analyzed by measuring the RMS deviation in coordinates. No significant differences between RNase S and RNase A dynamics were observed in the simulations. We were able to account for the apparent discrepancy between simulation and experiment by a simple model, According to this model, the experimentally observed differences in dynamics can be quantitatively explained by the small amounts of free S peptide and S protein that are present in equilibrium with the RNase S complex. Thus, folded RNase A and the RNase S complex have identical dynamic behavior, despite the presence of a break in polypeptide chain between residues 20 and 21 in the latter molecule. This is in contrast to what has been widely believed for over 30 years about this important fragment complementation system.

In this paper, we study the Einstein relation for the diffusivity to mobility ratio (DMR) in n-channel inversion layers of non-linear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion relation by considering their special properties within the frame work of k.p formalism. The results for the n-channel inversion layers of III-V, ternary and quaternary materials form a special case of our generalized analysis. The DMR for n-channel inversion layers of II-VI, IV-VI and stressed materials has been investigated by formulating the respective 2D electron dispersion laws. It has been found, taking n-channel inversion layers of CdGeAs2, Cd(3)AS(2), InAs, InSb, Hg1-xCdxTe, In1-xGaxAsyP1-y lattice matched to InP, CdS, PbTe, PbSnTe, Pb1-xSnxSe and stressed InSb as examples, that the DMR increases with the increasing surface electric field with different numerical values and the nature of the variations are totally band structure dependent. The well-known expression of the DMR for wide gap materials has been obtained as a special case under certain limiting conditions and this compatibility is an indirect test for our generalized formalism. Besides, an experimental method of determining the 2D DMR for n-channel inversion layers having arbitrary dispersion laws has been suggested.

C60Br8, unlike C60Br6 and C60Cl6, forms a solid charge-transfer compound with tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), the composition being C60Br8(TTF)(8). The unique complex-forming property of C60Br8 can be understood on the basis of the electronic structures of the halogenated derivatives of C-60. Molecular orbital calculations show that the low LUMO energy of C60Br8 compared with the other halogen derivatives renders the formation of the complex with TTF favourable, the four virtual LUMOs being able to accept 8 electrons. The Raman spectrum of C60Br8(TTF)(8) shows a marked softening of the bands (-46 cm(-1) on average) with respect to C60Br8 suggesting that indeed 8 electrons are transferred per C60Br8 molecule, one from each TTF molecule. The complex is weakly paramagnetic and shows a magnetic transition around 80 K.

In routine industrial design, fatigue life estimation is largely based on S-N curves and ad hoc cycle counting algorithms used with Miner's rule for predicting life under complex loading. However, there are well known deficiencies of the conventional approach. Of the many cumulative damage rules that have been proposed, Manson's Double Linear Damage Rule (DLDR) has been the most successful. Here we follow up, through comparisons with experimental data from many sources, on a new approach to empirical fatigue life estimation (A Constructive Empirical Theory for Metal Fatigue Under Block Cyclic Loading', Proceedings of the Royal Society A, in press). The basic modeling approach is first described: it depends on enforcing mathematical consistency between predictions of simple empirical models that include indeterminate functional forms, and published fatigue data from handbooks. This consistency is enforced through setting up and (with luck) solving a functional equation with three independent variables and six unknown functions. The model, after eliminating or identifying various parameters, retains three fitted parameters; for the experimental data available, one of these may be set to zero. On comparison against data from several different sources, with two fitted parameters, we find that our model works about as well as the DLDR and much better than Miner's rule. We finally discuss some ways in which the model might be used, beyond the scope of the DLDR.
