Three new aluminoborates having the composition MAl3BO7, where M = Ca,Sr or Ba, have been prepared. X-ray diffraction data indicate that all the phases are monoclinic, with close structural similarity to the meta stable aluminate, SrAl4O7. These aluminoborates are good host lattices for Eu2+ luminescence. The emission spectra show multiple bands in the blue region, corresponding to two inequivalent sites in each case, with one of them having quantum efficiency greater-than or equivalent to 75%. In the case of SrAl3BO7:Eu2+, the d–f band emission dominates at 300 K whereas at 77 K both d–f band and f–f line emissions are observed. Efficient Eu2+→Mn2+ energy transfer is observed in MAl3BO7 leading to strong green emission of Mn2+in the tetrahedral sites.aluminoborates; europium

Eu2+ ion doped into a suitable host results in an efficient luminophore with engineering relevance; however stabilizing this ion in a host is known to be a challenge. Here we report a novel approach for the synthesis of efficient CaAl2O4 phosphor containing Eu2+ luminophore and Cr3+ activator. CaAl2O4:Eu2+, Cr3+ is prepared by a solution combustion (SCS) method using (i) urea, (ii) oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) and (iii) fuel-blend (in which overall fuel to oxidizer ratio (F/O) = 1). A Multi-channel thermocouple setup is used to measure the flame temperatures to study the nature of combustion of various fuel mixtures. The variation of adiabatic flame temperature is calculated theoretically for different urea/ODH mixture ratios according to thermodynamic concept and correlated with the observed flame temperatures. Blue emission of the CaAl2O4:Eu2+ phosphor is enhanced similar to 20 times using the fuel-blend approach. Using the observed reaction kinetics, and the known chemistry of smoldering type combustion, a mechanism is proposed for the observed stabilization of Eu2+ ion in the fuel-blend case. This also explains the observed improvement in blue light emission. We show that the right choice of the fuel ratio is essential for enhancing photoluminescence (PL) emission. The PL intensity is highest for ODH lean and urea rich combination (i.e. when the ratio of ODH:urea is 1:5); measured color purity is comparable to commercial blue phosphor, BAM:Eu2+. Photoinduced electron transfer (ET) reactions in the zinc porphyrin-crown ether (ZnPCE) supramolecule, in which one crown ether moiety containing Eu3+ as electron acceptor is covalently linked to zinc porphyrin (ZnP), were studied by flash photolysis. In methanol solutions, highly efficient charge separation occurs via intramolecular ET from (ZnP)-Zn-3 to Eu3+ encapsulated in the crown ether void (k(1) = (3 +/- 1) X 10(3) s(-1)) and intramolecular ET from 3ZnP to uncomplexed Eu2+ (k(2) = (2.5 +/- 0.5) X 10(3) s(-1)). Intermolecular ET from Eu2+ escaped from the crown ether void to ZnP.+ (k(tau) = (4.3 +/- 0.7) X 10(8) M(-1) s(-1)) seems to be the main pathway of charge recombination.

Red, blue and green emitting lamp phosphors such as EU(3+) doped Y2O3 (red phosphor), EU(2+) doped Ba0.64Al12O18.64, BaMgAl10O17 and BaMg2Al16O27 (blue phosphors) and Ce0.67Tb0.33MgAl11O19 and Eu2+, Mn2+ doped BaMgAl10O17 (green phosphors) have been prepared by the combustion of the corresponding metal nitrates (oxidizer) and oxalyl dihydrazide/urea/carbohydrazide (fuel) mixtures at 400 degrees-500 degrees C within 5 min. The formation of these phosphors has been confirmed by their characteristic powder X-ray diffraction patterns and fluorescence spectra. The phosphors showed characteristic emission bands at 611 nm (red emission), 430-450 nm (blue emission) and 515-540 nm (green emission). The fine-particle nature of the combustion derived phosphors has been investigated using powder density, particle size and BET surface area measurements.

he specific heats of EUNi(5)P(3), an antiferromagnet, and EuNi2P2, a mixed-valence compound, have been measured between 0.4 and 30 K in magnetic fields of, respectively, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 5, and 7 T, and 0 and 7 T. In zero field the specific heat of EuNi5P3 shows a h-like anomaly with a maximum at 8.3 K. With increasing field in the range 0-2.5 T, the maximum shifts to lower temperatures, as expected for an antiferromagnet. In higher fields the antiferromagnetic ordering is destroyed and the magnetic part of the specific heat approaches a Schottky anomaly that is consistent with expectations for the crystal-field/Zeeman levels. In low fields and for temperatures between 1.5 acid 5 K the magnetic contribution to the specific heat is proportional to the temperature, indicating a high density of excited states with an energy dependence that is very unusual for an antiferromagnet. The entropy associated with the magnetic ordering is similar to R In8, confirming that only the Eu2+-with J=7/2, S=7/2, L=0-orders below 30 R. In zero field approximately 20% of the entropy occurs above the Neel temperature, consistent. with the usual amount of short-range order observed in antiferromagnets. The hyperfine magnetic field at the Eu nuclei in EUNi(5)P(3) is 33.3 T, in good agreement with a value calculated from electron-nuclear double resonance measurements. For EuNi2P2 the specific heat is nearly field independent and shows no evidence of magnetic ordering or hyperfine fields. The coefficient of the electron contribution to the specific heat is similar to 100 mJ/mol K-2.

The role of B2O3 addition on the long phosphorescence of SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ has been investigated. B2O3 is just not an inert high temperature solvent (flux) to accelerate grain growth, according to SEM results. B2O3 has a substitutional effect, even at low concentrations. by way of incorporation of BO4 in the corner-shared AlO4 framework of the distorted 'stuffed' tridymite structure of SrAl2O4. which is discernible from the IR and solid-state MAS NMR spectral data. With increasing concentrations, B2O3 reacts with SrAl2O4 to form Sr4Al4O25 together with Sr-borate (SrB2O4) as the glassy phase, as evidenced by XRD and SEM studies. At high B2O3 contents, Sr4Al14O25 converts to SrAl2B2O7 (cubic and hexagonal), SrAl12O19 and Sr-borate (SrB4O7) glass. Sr4Al14O25:Eu2+, Dy3+ has also been independently synthesized to realize the blue emitting (lambda(em)approximate to490 nm) phosphor. The afterglow decay as well as thermoluminescence studies reveal that Sr4Al14O25:Eu, Dy exhibits equally long phosphorescence as that of SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+. In both cases, long phosphorescence is noticed only when BO4 is present along with Dy3+ and Eu2+. Here Dy3+ because of its higher charge density than Eu2+ prefers to occupy the Sr sites in the neighbourhood of BO4, as the effective charge on borate is more negative than that of AlO4. Thus. Dy3+ forms a substitutional defect complex with borate and acts as an acceptor-type defect center. These defects Eu2+ ions and the subsequent thermal release of hole at room temperature followed by the trap the hole generated by the excitation of recombination with electron resulting in the long persistent phosphorescence. Despite being a particularly good emitter, use of divalent Eu has been seriously limited. This is because severe reducing environments or special hosts are needed during synthesis of divalent Eu containing phosphors. In this work we stabilize Eu in its 2+ state (in CaAl2O4) using an open-air solution combustion reaction. The impact of fuel (F) to oxidizer (O) molar ratios (F/O = 0.5-2.0) on luminescence properties is explored. Chromaticity of Eu:CaAl2O4 depends sensitively on the F/O ratio. In general, higher F/O inhibits Eu3+ and promotes Eu2+ formation, which in turn improves the quality of the blue phosphor. EPR spectra show inhomogeneous broadening effects with the increase in F/O ratio, which suggests that disorder creation is promoted when F/O is increase. This is also confirmed by an increase in emission line width in PL spectra, when F/O is increased. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ZnO:Eu (0.1 mol%) nanopowders have been synthesized by auto ignition based low temperature solution combustion method. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns confirm the nanosized particles which exhibit hexagonal wurtzite structure. The crystallite size estimated from Scherrer's formula was found to be in the range 35-39 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies reveal particles are agglomerated with quasi-hexagonal morphology. A blue shift of absorption edge with increase in band gap is observed for Eu doped ZnO samples. Upon 254 nm excitation, ZnO:Eu nanopowders show peaks in regions blue (420-484 nm), green (528 nm) and red (600 nm) which corresponds to both Eu2+ and Eu3+ ions. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum exhibits a broad resonance signal at g= 4.195 which is attributed to Eu2+ ions. Further, EPR and thermo-luminescence (TL) studies reveal presence of native defects in this phosphor. Using TL glow peaks the trap parameters have been evaluated and discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.
