In this two-part series of papers, a generalized non-orthogonal amplify and forward (GNAF) protocol which generalizes several known cooperative diversity protocols is proposed. Transmission in the GNAF protocol comprises of two phases - the broadcast phase and the cooperation phase. In the broadcast phase, the source broadcasts its information to the relays as well as the destination. In the cooperation phase, the source and the relays together transmit a space-time code in a distributed fashion. The GNAF protocol relaxes the constraints imposed by the protocol of Jing and Hassibi on the code structure. In Part-I of this paper, a code design criteria is obtained and it is shown that the GNAF protocol is delay efficient and coding gain efficient as well. Moreover GNAF protocol enables the use of sphere decoders at the destination with a non-exponential Maximum likelihood (ML) decoding complexity. In Part-II, several low decoding complexity code constructions are studied and a lower bound on the Diversity-Multiplexing Gain tradeoff of the GNAF protocol is obtained.

Wireless LAN (WLAN) market consists of IEEE 802.11 MAC standard conformant devices (e.g., access points (APs), client adapters) from multiple vendors. Certain third party certifications such as those specified by the Wi-Fi alliance have been widely used by vendors to ensure basic conformance to the 802.11 standard, thus leading to the expectation that the available devices exhibit identical MAC level behavior. In this paper, however, we present what we believe to be the first ever set of experimental results that highlight the fact that WLAN devices from different vendors in the market can have heterogeneous MAC level behavior. Specifically, we demonstrate with examples and data that in certain cases, devices may not be conformant with the 802.11 standard while in other cases, they may differ in significant details that are not a part of mandatory specifications of the standard. We argue that heterogeneous MAC implementations can adversely impact WLAN operations leading to unfair bandwidth allocation, potential break-down of related MAC functionality and difficulties in provisioning the capacity of a WLAN. However, on the positive side, MAC level heterogeneity can be useful in applications such as vendor/model level device fingerprinting.

We study the scaling behavior of the fidelity (F) in the thermodynamic limit using the examples of a system of Dirac fermions in one dimension and the Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice. We show that the thermodynamic fidelity inside the gapless as well as gapped phases follow power-law scalings, with the power given by some of the critical exponents of the system. The generic scaling forms of F for an anisotropic quantum critical point for both the thermodynamic and nonthermodynamic limits have been derived and verified for the Kitaev model. The interesting scaling behavior of F inside the gapless phase of the Kitaev model is also discussed. Finally, we consider a rotation of each spin in the Kitaev model around the z axis and calculate F through the overlap between the ground states for the angle of rotation eta and eta + d eta, respectively. We thereby show that the associated geometric phase vanishes. We have supplemented our analytical calculations with numerical simulations wherever necessary.

Transcription is the most fundamental step in gene expression in any living organism. Various environmental cues help in the maturation of core RNA polymerase (RNAP; alpha(2)beta beta'omega) with different sigma-factors, leading to the directed recruitment of RNAP to different promoter DNA sequences. Thus it is essential to determine the sigma-factors that affect the preferential partitioning of core RNAP among various a-actors, and the role of sigma-switching in transcriptional gene regulation. Further, the macromolecular assembly of holo RNAP takes place in an extremely crowded environment within a cell, and thus far the kinetics and thermodynamics of this molecular recognition process have not been well addressed. In this study we used a site-directed bioaffinity immobilization method to evaluate the relative binding affinities of three different Escherichia coli sigma-factors to the same core RNAP with variations in temperature and ionic strength while emulating the crowded cellular milieu. Our data indicate that the interaction of core RNAP-sigma is susceptible to changes in external stimuli such as osmolytic and thermal stress, and the degree of susceptibility varies among different sigma-factors. This allows for a reversible sigma-switching from housekeeping factors to alternate sigma-factors when the organism senses a change in its physiological conditions.

We derive exact expressions for the zeroth and the first three spectral moment sum rules for the retarded Green's function and for the zeroth and the first spectral moment sum rules for the retarded self-energy of the inhomogeneous Bose-Hubbard model in nonequilibrium, when the local on-site repulsion and the chemical potential are time-dependent, and in the presence of an external time-dependent electromagnetic field. We also evaluate these expressions for the homogeneous case in equilibrium, where all time dependence and external fields vanish. Unlike similar sum rules for the Fermi-Hubbard model, in the Bose-Hubbard model case, the sum rules often depend on expectation values that cannot be determined simply from parameters in the Hamiltonian like the interaction strength and chemical potential but require knowledge of equal-time many-body expectation values from some other source. We show how one can approximately evaluate these expectation values for the Mott-insulating phase in a systematic strong-coupling expansion in powers of the hopping divided by the interaction. We compare the exact moment relations to the calculated moments of spectral functions determined from a variety of different numerical approximations and use them to benchmark their accuracy. This paper describes the use of liaison to better integrate product model and assembly process model so as to enable sharing of design and assembly process information in a common integrated form and reason about them. Liaison can be viewed as a set, usually a pair, of features in proximity with which process information can be associated. A liaison is defined as a set of geometric entities on the parts being assembled and relations between these geometric entities. Liaisons have been defined for riveting, welding, bolt fastening, screw fastening, adhesive bonding (gluing) and blind fastening processes. The liaison captures process specific information through attributes associated with it. The attributes are associated with process details at varying levels of abstraction. A data structure for liaison has been developed to cluster the attributes of the liaison based on the level of abstraction. As information about the liaisons is not explicitly available in either the part model or the assembly model, algorithms have been developed for extracting liaisons from the assembly model. The use of liaison is proposed to enable both the construction of process model as the product model is fleshed out, as well as maintaining integrity of both product and process models as the inevitable changes happen to both design and the manufacturing environment during the product lifecycle. Results from aerospace and automotive domains have been provided to illustrate and validate the use of liaisons. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Any stressed photoelastic medium can be reduced to an optically equivalent model consisting of a linear retarder, with retardation 1 and principal axis at azimuth 1, and a pure rotator of power 2. The paper describes two simple methods to determine these quantities experimentally. Further, a method is described to overcome the problem of rotational effects in scattered-light investigations. This new method makes use of the experimentally determined characteristic parameters

In the framework of the ECSK [Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble] theory of cosmology, a scalar field nonminimally coupled to the gravitational field is considered. For a Robertson-Walker open universe (k=0) in the radiation era, the field equations admit a singularity-free solution for the scale factor. In theory, the torsion is generated through nonminimal coupling of a scalar field to the gravitation field. The nonsingular nature of the cosmological model automatically solves the flatness problem. Further absence of event horizon and particle horizon explains the high degree of isotropy, especially of 2.7-K background radiation.

We study a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev model on a ring of size N, in which there is a spin S > 1/2 on each site and the Hamiltonian is J Sigma(nSnSn+1y)-S-x. The cases where S is integer and half-odd integer are qualitatively different. We show that there is a Z(2)-valued conserved quantity W-n for each bond (n, n + 1) of the system. For integer S, the Hilbert space can be decomposed into 2N sectors, of unequal sizes. The number of states in most of the sectors grows as d(N), where d depends on the sector. The largest sector contains the ground state, and for this sector, for S=1, d=(root 5+1)/2. We carry out exact diagonalization for small systems. The extrapolation of our results to large N indicates that the energy gap remains finite in this limit. In the ground-state sector, the system can be mapped to a spin-1/2 model. We develop variational wave functions to study the lowest energy states in the ground state and other sectors. The first excited state of the system is the lowest energy state of a different sector and we estimate its excitation energy. We consider a more general Hamiltonian, adding a term lambda Sigma W-n(n), and show that this has gapless excitations in the range lambda(c)(1)<=lambda <=lambda(c)(2). We use the variational wave functions to study how the ground-state energy and the defect density vary near the two critical points lambda(c)(1) and lambda(c)(2).

Ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with point-defect disorder are investigated numerically in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The phase diagram in the p(point defect concentration)-delta(deviation from half filling) plane exhibits antiferromagnetic, spin-density-wave, paramagnetic, and spin-glass-like phases. The disorder stabilizes the antiferromagnetic phase relative to the spin-density-wave phase. The presence of U strongly enhances the localization in the antiferromagnetic phase. The spin-density-wave and spin-glass-like phases are weakly localized.

A model representing the vibrations of a coupled fluid-solid structure is considered. This structure consists of a tube bundle immersed in a slightly compressible fluid. Assuming periodic distribution of tubes, this article describes the asymptotic nature of the vibration frequencies when the number of tubes is large. Our investigation shows that classical homogenization of the problem is not sufficient for this purpose. Indeed, our end result proves that the limit spectrum consists of three parts: the macro-part which comes from homogenization, the micro-part and the boundary layer part. The last two components are new. We describe in detail both macro- and micro-parts using the so-called Bloch wave homogenization method. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Motivated by experiments on Josephson junction arrays, and cold atoms in an optical lattice in a synthetic magnetic field, we study the ``fully frustrated'' Bose-Hubbard model with half a magnetic flux quantum per plaquette. We obtain the phase diagram of this model on a two-leg ladder at integer filling via the density matrix renormalization group approach, complemented by Monte Carlo simulations on an effective classical XY model. The ground state at intermediate correlations is consistently shown to be a chiral Mott insulator (CMI) with a gap to all excitations and staggered loop currents which spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry. We characterize the CMI state as a vortex supersolid or an indirect exciton condensate, and discuss various experimental implications.

Causal relationships existing between observed levels of groundwater in a semi-arid sub-basin of the Kabini River basin (Karnataka state, India) are investigated in this study. A Vector Auto Regressive model is used for this purpose. Its structure is built on an upstream/downstream interaction network based on observed hydro-physical properties. Exogenous climatic forcing is used as an input based on cumulated rainfall departure. Optimal models are obtained thanks to a trial approach and are used as a proxy of the dynamics to derive causal networks. It appears to be an interesting tool for analysing the causal relationships existing inside the basin. The causal network reveals 3 main regions: the Northeastern part of the Gundal basin is closely coupled to the outlet dynamics. The Northwestern part is mainly controlled by the climatic forcing and only marginally linked to the outlet dynamic. Finally, the upper part of the basin plays as a forcing rather than a coupling with the lower part of the basin allowing for a separate analysis of this local behaviour. The analysis also reveals differential time scales at work inside the basin when comparing upstream oriented with downstream oriented causalities. In the upper part of the basin, time delays are close to 2 months in the upward direction and lower than 1 month in the downward direction. These time scales are likely to be good indicators of the hydraulic response time of the basin which is a parameter usually difficult to estimate practically. This suggests that, at the sub-basin scale, intra-annual time scales would be more relevant scales for analysing or modelling tropical basin dynamics in hard rock (granitic and gneissic) aquifers ubiquitous in south India.
