The effect of massive blowing rates on the steady laminar compressible boundary-layer flow with variable gas properties at a 3-dim. stagnation point (which includes both nodal and saddle points of attachment) has been studied. The equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique for nodal points of attachment but employing a parametric differentiation technique instead of quasilinearization for saddle points of attachment. It is found that the effect of massive blowing rates is to move the viscous layer away from the surface. The effect of the variation of the density- viscosity product across the boundary layer is found to be negligible for massive blowing rates but significant for moderate blowing rates. The velocity profiles in the transverse direction for saddle points of attachment in the presence of massive blowing show both the reverse flow as well as velocity overshoot.

The complex lies on a crystallographic centre of symmetry. The Ni atom is octahedrally coordinated by two thiocyanates (through N atoms) and by two thiosemicarbazide molecules (through hydrazinic N and S atoms). The crystal structure is stabilized by N--H...S hydrogen bonds. Early work on this structure [Garaj & Dunaj-Jurco (1968). Chem. Commun. p. 518] used photographic data and was refined to R = 0-13 for 512 reflections.

The crystal structures of 1-aminocyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid (H-Acc6-OH) and six derivatives (including dipeptides) have been determined. The derivatives are Boc-Acc6-OH, Boc-(Acc6)2-OH, Boc-L-Met-Acc6-OMe, ClCH2CO-Acc6-OH, p-BrC6H4CO-Acc6-OH oxazolone, and the symmetrical anhydride from Z-Acc6-OH, [(Z-Acc6)2O]. The cyclohexane rings in all the structures adopt an almost perfect chair conformation. The amino group occupies the axial position in six structures; the free amino acid is the only example where the carbonyl group occupies an axial position. The values determined for the torsion angles about the N–Cα(φ) and Cα–CO (ψ) bonds correspond to folded, potentially helical conformations for the Acc6 residue.

The crystal state conformations of three peptides containing the a,a-dialkylated residues, a,adi n-propylglycine (Dpg) and a,@-di-n-butylglycine (Dbg), have been established by x-ray diffraction. Boc-Ala-Dpg-Ala-OMe ( I ) and Boc-Ala-Dbg-Ala-OMe (III) adopt distorted type II @-turn conformations with Ala ( I ) and Dpg/Dbg (2) as the corner residues. In both peptides the conformational angles at the Dxg residue (I: 4 = 66.23 J/ = 19.3'; III: 4 = 66S0, J. = 21 .la)deviate appreciablyfrom ideal values for the i + 2 residue in a type II @-turn. In both peptides the observed(N. 0) distances between the Boc CO andAla(3) NHgroups are far too long (I:3.44 k; III: 3.63 k) for an intramolecular 4 + 1 hydrogen bond. Boc-Ala-Dpg-Ala-NHMe (II)crystallizes with two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. Both molecules IIA and IIB adopt consecutive @-turn (type III-III in IIA and type III-I in IIB) or incipient 3,,,-helical structures, stabilized by two intramolecular 4 --t I hydrogen bonds. In all four molecules the bond angle N-C"-C' ( T ) at the Dxg residues are 2 1109 The observation of conformational angles in the helical region of 4,J/ space at these residues is consistent with theoretical predictions

Nanostructured carbon nitride films were prepared by pyrolysis assisted chemical vapour deposition(CVD). A two zone furnace with a temperature profile having a uniform temperature over a length of 20 cm length has been designed and developed. The precursor Azabenzimidazole was taken in a quartz tube and evaporated at 400 degrees C. The dense vapours enter the pyrolysis zone kept at a desired temperature and deposit on the quartz substrates. The FTIR spectrum of the prepared samples shows peaks at 1272 cm(-1) (C-N stretching) and 1600 cm(-1) (C=N) confirms the bonding of nitrogen with carbon. Raman D and G peaks, are observed at 1360 cm(-1) and 1576 cm(-1) respectively. XPS core level spectra of C 1s and N 1s show the formation of pi bonding between carbon and nitrogen atoms. The size of the nano crystals estimated from the SEM images and XRD is similar to 100 nm. In some regions of the sample a maximum of 57 atom % of nitrogen has been observed.

Vaccines against Neisseria meningitidis group C are based on its alpha-2,9-linked polysialic acid capsular polysaccharide. This polysialic acid expressed on the surface of N. meningitidis and in the absence of specific antibody serves to evade host defense mechanisms. The polysialyltransferase (PST) that forms the group C polysialic acid (NmC PST) is located in the cytoplasmic membrane. Until recently, detailed characterization of bacterial polysialyltransferases has been hampered by a lack of availability of soluble enzyme preparations. We have constructed chimeras of the group C polysialyltransferase that catalyzes the formation alpha-2,9-polysialic acid as a soluble enzyme. We used site-directed mutagenesis to determine the region of the enzyme necessary for synthesis of the alpha-2,9 linkage. A chimera of NmB and NmC PSTs containing only amino acids 1 to 107 of the NmB polysialyltransferase catalyzed the synthesis of alpha-2,8-polysialic acid. The NmC polysialyltransferase requires an exogenous acceptor for catalytic activity. While it requires a minimum of a disialylated oligosaccharide to catalyze transfer, it can form high-molecular-weight alpha-2,9-polysialic acid in a nonprocessive fashion when initiated with an alpha-2,8-polysialic acid acceptor. De novo synthesis in vivo requires an endogenous acceptor. We attempted to reconstitute de novo activity of the soluble group C polysialyltransferase with membrane components. We found that an acapsular mutant with a defect in the polysialyltransferase produces outer membrane vesicles containing an acceptor for the alpha-2,9-polysialyltransferase. This acceptor is an amphipathic molecule and can be elongated to produce polysialic acid that is reactive with group C-specific antibody.

Thin films of ZnO, Li doped ZnO (ZLO) and multilayer of ZnO and ZLO (ZnO/ZLO) were grown on silicon and corning glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Single phase formation and the crystalline qualities of the films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and Li composition in the film was investigated to be 15 wt% by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman spectrum reveals the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO multilayer and confirms the single phase formation. Films grown on corning glass shows more than 80% transmittance in the visible region and the optical band gaps were calculated to be 3.245, 3.26 and 3.22 eV for ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO, respectively. An efficient blue emission was observed in all films which were grown on silicon (1 0 0) substrate by photoluminescence (PL). PL measurements at different temperatures reveal that the PL emission intensity of ZnO/ZLO multilayer was weakly dependent on temperature as compared to the single layers of ZnO and ZLO and the wavelength of emission was independent of temperature. Our results indicate that ZnO/ZLO multilayer can be used for the fabrication of blue light emitting diodes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We review our recent contributions to the use of solvothermal methods for the preparation of different oxide and chalcogenide nanoparticles. We have prepared sub 10-nm,gamma-Fe2O3 ZnFe2O4, and CoFe2O4 particles by the decomposition of the corresponding cupferron complexes in the presence of n-octylamine or n-dodecylamine in solvothermal toluene. Similarly, dodecanethiol-capped chalcogenide nanoparticles of CdSe have been prepared by reacting cadmium stearates with H2Se under solvothermal conditions. The H2Se is generated in situ by the reduction of Se by tetralin. Using this latter technique, we have also been able to prepare PbSe and PbI2 in toluene under solvothermal conditions, albeit in bulk (rather than nanocrystalline) form. In the preparation of PbI2, HI is prepared by the in situ reduction of I-2 by tetralin.

We have studied the magnetic field (H∥c) dependent rf dissipation (Hrf∥a) in an as-grown Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 single crystal prior to and after irradiation with 250 MeV 107Ag17+ ions. In a comparison of the responses from the as-grown crystal with an air-annealed crystal, features due to oxygen deficient regions acting as weak links in the former are identified. These features disappear immediately after irradiation of the as-grown crystal. We attribute such behavior to the displacement of oxygen from columnar tracks to deficient regions thus eliminating the weak links. Losses from the same irradiated as-grown crystal stored at 300 K for 60 days show that the features similar but not identical to those observed in the pristine state have reappeared implying that the displaced oxygen is in a metastable configuration in the deficient regions and hence is mobile due to thermal effects even at 300 K.

Based on the liquid-drop model, we have evaluated the Tolman length and surface energy of nanoparticles for different elements and compared with other theoretical models as well as the available simulated data. The predictions of the model show good agreement with the simulated results. Like the cohesive energy and melting temperature, the size-dependency of surface energy is also shape-dependent. The mechanical properties of clays are highly dependent not only on the stress/strain ratio to which the material is subjected but also on the chemistry of the pore fluids which in turn affects the intergranular or the effective stresses. Atterberg limits and vane shear tests were performed with different pore fluids in order to observe how the fine-grained material mechanically responded. The diffuse double layer theory has been used to interpret the data of vane shear tests in order to explain the variation of geotechnical responses with the different clays. Van der Waals forces and double layer forces were obtained and capillary forces calculated. The results show that while for kaolinite and illite the chemistry of the pore fluids has no influence on the water content and hence on the mechanical behaviour of the material, Na-smectite shows a strong correlation between the dielectric constant of the pore fluids and an increase in undrained shear strength. The data obtained extends an understanding of the influence of the dielectric constant (epsilon) of the pore fluids on the geotechnical properties of fine-grained materials.

Thermodynamic properties of GdRhO3 are investigated in the temperature range from 900 to 1300 K by employing a solid-state electrochemical cell, incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte. The standard Gibbs free energy of formation of GdRhO3 from component binary oxide Gd2O3 with C-rare earth structure and Rh2O3 with orthorhombic structure can be expressed as; Delta G(f(ox))(o)(+/- 60)/J mol(-1) = -56603 + 3.78(T/K) Based on the thermodynamic information on GdRhO3 from experiment and auxiliary data for binary oxides from the literature and estimated properties of Gd-Rh alloys, phase relations are computed for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K. Gibbs free energies for intermetallic phases in the binary Gd-Rh are evaluated using calorimetric data available in the literature for two compositions and Miedema's model, consistent with the binary phase diagram. Isothermal section of the ternary phase diagram, oxygen potential-composition diagram and a 3-D chemical potential diagram for the system Gd-Rh-O at 1273 K are developed. Phase relations in the ternary Gd-Rh-O are also computed as a function of temperature at constant oxygen partial pressures. The ternary oxide, GdRhO3 decomposes to Gd2O3 with B-rare earth structure, metallic Rh and O-2 at 1759(+/- 2) K in pure O-2 and 1649(+/- 2) K in air at a total pressure P-0 -0.1 MPa.
