Missing (in-situ) snow cover data hampers climate change and runoff studies in the Greater Himalayas
Resumo:
The Himalayas are presently holding the largest ice masses outside the polar regions and thus (temporarily) store important freshwater resources. In contrast to the contemplation of glaciers, the role of runoff from snow cover has received comparably little attention in the past, although (i) its contribution is thought to be at least equally or even more important than that of ice melt in many Himalayan catchments and (ii) climate change is expected to have widespread and significant consequences on snowmelt runoff. Here, we show that change assessment of snowmelt runoff and its timing is not as straightforward as often postulated, mainly as larger partial pressure of H2O, CO2, CH4, and other greenhouse gases might increase net long-wave input for snowmelt quite significantly in a future atmosphere. In addition, changes in the short-wave energy balance such as the pollution of the snow cover through black carbon or the sensible or latent heat contribution to snowmelt are likely to alter future snowmelt and runoff characteristics as well. For the assessment of snow cover extent and depletion, but also for its monitoring over the extremely large areas of the Himalayas, remote sensing has been used in the past and is likely to become even more important in the future. However, for the calibration and validation of remotely-sensed data, and even-more so in light of possible changes in snow-cover energy balance, we strongly call for more in-situ measurements across the Himalayas, in particular for daily data on new snow and snow cover water equivalent, or the respective energy balance components. Moreover, data should be made accessible to the scientific community, so that the latter can more accurately estimate climate change impacts on Himalayan snow cover and possible consequences thereof on runoff. Administration of norethisterone (NET) or NET + estradiol benzoate using an Alzet minipump or as once-a-month intramuscular injection of their depot forms, NET-enanthate (NET-EN) and estradiol valerate (E-val), resulted in azoospermia in all monkeys (n = 13) within 60 to 150 days of treatment. Although addition of depot form of testosterone (T, 20 mg/month) to the regimen restored the behavioral response typical of a normal male, it did not reverse the azoospermic state. Serum T (heightened nocturnal) levels were significantly reduced (> 85%, p < 0.001) in all the treated groups. Evidence for blockade in spermatogenesis following treatment was obtained by DNA flow cytometry. Following withdrawal of treatment, the T level was restored to normalcy within 15 days but 120 days more were required for the animals to exhibit normal sperm counts. In conclusion, the efficacy of once-a-month injection of relatively low doses of NET-EN + E-Val to bring about azoospermia in monkeys, in a relatively short time, has been demonstrated. As the results are uniform and reproducible, it appears desirable that this steroid regimen be tested in man for its contraceptive efficacy.

The hydrolysis of cupric ion has been studied at various ionic strengths (0·01, 0·05, 0·1 and 0·5 M). The results are analyzed employing 'core + links' theory, log-log plot, normalization plot, and extrapolation method for obtaining the pure mononuclear curve. The stability constants of Cu2(OH)2++, Cu3(OH)4++, Cu(OH)+ and Cu(OH)2 have been reported.

1. The polarographic behaviour of amino-acid complexes of zinc has been studied using seven amino acids as complexing agents. 2. The effect of varying the pH of the base solution and the concentration of amino-acid anion on the polarographic behaviour of zinc in these solutions have indi cated the formation of twelve amino-acid complexes. The stability constants could not be calculated due to the irreversible nature of the waves. 3. The effect of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, and ammonia on the polarographic behaviour of zinc has been investigated. The results can be interpreted as due to the formation of mixed complexes in many systems. 4. Amino-acid base solutions have been found to be suitable for the polarographic estimation of zinc.

1. A detailed polarographic study of cadmium has been made employing glycine, α-alanine, β-alanine, valine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and asparagine as complexing agents at various pH values. The effect of incorporating sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and ammonium nitrate + ammonium hydroxide, on the polarographic behaviour of amino acid complexes of cadmium has also been investigated. 2. The reduction process has been found to be reversible in all systems. 3. The small shifts in the half-wave potentials noticed due to increase in the concentration of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate in presence of amino acids have been explained on the basis of formation of mixtures of pure and mixed amino acid complexes of cadmium. Mixed complexes have also been noticed in presence of ammonium hydroxide and ammonium nitrate and amino acids. 4. Polarographic evidence has been obtained for the formation of over 30 pure and mixed complexes. The dissociation constant Kd, the Δ F° value for the dissociation, and standard potential value for the formation, of each complex have been computed. 5. It has been found that cadmium can be polarographically estimated in amino acid solutions.

1. The polarographic behaviour of glycine, α-alanine, β-alanine, valine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and asparagine complexes of lead has been studied at various pH values and in presence of (1) NaOH, (2) Na2CO3 and (3) NH4 NO3+NH4OH. All the polarographic waves have been found to be reversible. 2. Experiments conducted on the effect of variation of pH, i.e., 7

The carboxyl chain of some molecules has been found to be responsible for causing rearrangements and controlling their course. This chain effect, which operates during reactions involving carbonium ions, is illustrated with examples from Sandalwood oil chemistry.

The structure, synthesis, and configuration of the lactone of tricycloekasantalic acid have been described. It has been shown that in the formation of this lactone (XII) from the acids (I) or (II) a rearrangement is involved.

The green nitrosobenzene monomer is reduced polarographically to phenylhydroxylamine in the pH range 4—9. Though this reduction is known to be a two-electron process, coulometry invariably gives a lower value of n because of the reaction of unreacted nitrosobenzene and the phenylhydroxylamine formed. The green monomer is attacked by mercury in acid medium. In alkaline medium, the green monomer undergoes a change that follows first-order kinetics with respect to nitrosobenzene. The rate of the transformation depends on the solvent. It decreases in the order acetone > ethanol > dioxan.

Study of interdiffusion in the Co-Mo system is important to understand the performance of turbine blades in jet engine applications. Mo is added to superalloys to increase the solid solution strengthening and the creep resistance. In this study, the interdiffusion coefficient in the Co(Mo) solid solution and impurity diffusion coefficient of Mo in Co are determined. Further, the activation energy and pre-exponential factors are calculated, which provide an idea about the atomic mechanism of diffusion.
