Electric-field induced nonlinear actuation behavior is demonstrated in a bulk nanotube (CNT) structure under ambient conditions. Completely recoverable and non-degradable actuation over several cycles of electric-field is measured in these structures. A symmetric and polarity independent displacement corresponding up to an axial strain of 14% is measured upon application of a low strength electric field of 4.2 kV/m in the axial direction. However, a much lower strain of similar to 1% is measured in the radial (or, transverse) direction. Furthermore, the electric field induced actuation increases by more than a factor of 2 upon impregnating the CNT cellular structure with copper oxide nano-particles. An electrostriction mechanism, based on the electric-field induced polarization of CNT strands, is proposed to account for the reported actuation behavior. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Highly stable silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in agar-agar (Ag/agar) as inorganic-organic hybrid were obtained as free-standing film by in situ reduction of silver nitrate by ethanol. The antimicrobial activity of Ag/agar film on Escherichia coli (E. coil), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Candida albicans (C albicans) was evaluated in a nutrient broth and also in saline solution. In particular, films were repeatedly tested for antimicrobial activity after recycling. UV-vis absorption and TEM studies were carried out on films at different stages and morphological studies on microbes were carried out by SEM. Results showed spherical Ag NPs of size 15-25 nm, having sharp surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band. The antimicrobial activity of Ag/agar film was found to be in the order, C. albicans > E. coil > S. aureus, and antimicrobial activity against C. albicans was almost maintained even after the third cycle. Whereas, in case of E. coil and S. aureus there was a sharp decline in antimicrobial activity after the second cycle. Agglomeration of Ag NPs in Ag/agar film on exposure to microbes was observed by TEM studies. Cytotoxic experiments carried out on HeLa cells showed a threshold Ag NPs concentration of 60 mu g/mL, much higher than the minimum inhibition concentration of Ag NPs (25.8 mu g/mL) for E. coli. The mechanical strength of the film determined by nanoindentation technique showed almost retention of the strength even after repeated cycle. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Homogeneous composite thin films of Fe2O3-carbon nanotube were synthesized in a novel, single-step process by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using ferric acetyl acetonate as precursor. The deposition of composite takes place in a narrow range of CVD conditions, beyond which the deposition either multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) only or hematite (α-Fe2O3) only takes place. The composite film formed on stainless steel substrates were tested for their supercapacitive properties in various aqueous electrolytes.

Copper oxide (CuO) is one of the most important transition metal oxides due to its unique properties. It is used in various technological applications such as high critical temperature, superconductors, gas sensors, in photoconductive applications and so on. Recently, it has been used as an antimicrobial agent against various pathogenic bacteria. In the present investigation, we studied the structural and antidermatophytic properties of CuO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by a precipitation technique. Copper sulfate was used as a precursor and sodium hydroxide as a reducing agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed flower-shaped CuO NPs and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed the crystalline nature of CuO NPs. These NPs were evaluated against two prevalent species of dermatophytes, i.e. Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes by using the broth microdilution technique. Further, the NPs activity was also compared with synthetic sertaconazole. Although better antidermatophytic activity was exhibited with sertaconazole as compared to NPs, being synthetic, sertaconazole may not be preferred, as it shows different adverse effects. Trichophyton mentagrophytes is more susceptible to NPs than T. rubrum. A phylogenetic approach was applied for predicting differences in susceptibility of pathogens.

This paper presents the results of an investigation conducted on the switching behavior of copper oxide. The filamentary nature of the current and also the formation of a copper channel have been observed to be associated with the process of switching. The experiments and the analysis carried out by the authors show that the formation of copper channel is due only to a secondary process and is not responsible for the actual switching of the device to the low-voltage mode. The switching, as is clear from the analysis, seems to be the result of a purely electrothermal process. The effect of the dimensions of the device on the V-I characteristics is also discussed. It has further been shown that it is possible to prevent the formation of copper channel to obtain a monoshot type of switching transition.

Nanodispersed lead in metallic and amorphous matrices was synthesized by rapid solidification processing. The optimum microstructure was tailored to avoid percolation of the particles. With these embedded particles it is possible to study quantitatively the effect of size on the superconducting transition temperature by carrying out quantitative microstructural characterization and magnetic measurements. Our results suggest the role of the matrices in enhancement or depression of superconducting transition temperature of lead. The origin of this difference in behavior with respect to different matrices and sizes is discussed.

Combustion synthesized oxide and vanadate compounds (CeO2, Fe2O3, CeVO4, and FeVO4) were tested for catalytic hydrogen combustion. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All the four compounds showed good activity and stability for catalytic hydrogen combustion and more than 95% conversion was observed over all the compounds within 500 degrees C. The mechanisms for the reaction over the different classes of compounds (cerium-based and iron-based compounds) were proposed on the basis of spectroscopic observations. The main difference in the mechanisms was in the nature of adsorption of H2 over the sites. The elementary processes for the reaction were proposed, corresponding rate expressions were derived, and the rate parameters for the reaction were estimated using nonlinear regression. Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal mechanisms were also tested for the reaction and the proposed mechanism was compared with these mechanisms. Carbonaceous nickel oxide powder samples have been synthesized from an adducted nickel beta-ketoester complex used as a ``single source precursor'' through a solution-based microwave-assisted chemical route. Comprehensive analysis of the resulting powder material has been carried out using various characterization techniques. These analysis reveal that, depending on the solvent used, either NiO/C or Ni/NiO/C composites are formed, wherein Ni and/or NiO nanocrystals are enveloped in amorphous carbon. As the components emerge from the same molecular source, the composites are homogeneous on a fine scale, making them promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. Electrochemical capacitive behavior of these oxide composites is studied in a three-electrode configuration. With a specific capacitance of 113 F g(-1), Ni/NiO/C is superior to NiO/C as capacitor electrode material, in 0.1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. This is confirmed by impedance measurements, which show that charge-transfer resistance and equivalent series resistance are lower in Ni/NiO/C than in NiO/C, presumably because of the presence of metallic nickel in the former. The cyclic voltammograms are nearly rectangular and the electrodes display excellent cyclability in different electrolytes: Na2SO4, KOH and Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O. Specific capacitance as high as 143 F g(-1), is measured in Ca(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O electrolyte.

Nano-sized bimetallic dispersoids consisting of (Pb) and beta-(Sn) phases of eutectic composition (Pb26.1Sn73.9) embedded in aluminum and Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystalline matrices have been prepared by rapid solidification processing. The two phases, face centered cubic (Pb) and body center tetragonal, beta-(Sn) solid solution co-exist in all the embedded nanoparticles at room temperature. The phases bear crystallographic orientation relationship with the matrix. In situ TEM study has been carried out for the alloy particles to study the melting and the solidification behavior. The detailed microscopic observations indicate formation of a single-phase metastable fcc (Pb) in the nano-particles prior to the melting during heating. Solidification of these particles begins with nucleation of fcc (Pb), which phase separates into fcc (Pb) and beta-(Sn) lamellae in the solid state. In situ X-ray diffraction study is carried out to obtain lattice parameter of metastable fcc (Pb) and thereby an estimate of amount of Sn dissolved in the metastable (Pb) prior to the melting. The results are discussed in terms of a metastable phase diagram between fcc Pb and fcc Sn and invoking the size effect on the metastable phase diagram. The size factor is found to play a critical role in deciding the pathway of phase transformation as well as the extension of solid solubility of Sn in fcc (Pb) in the nano-particles.

Retaining the morphology of gallium oxide nanostructures during structural transformations or after doping with lanthanide ions is not facile. Here we report on the sonochemical synthesis of nearly monodisperse similar to 550 nm long nano-spindles of undoped and La-doped alpha-GaOOH. The transformation of as-prepared undoped and La-doped alpha-GaOOH powders into the corresponding undoped and La-doped Ga2O3 phases (alpha and beta) was achieved by carrying out controlled annealing at elevated temperatures under optimized conditions. The formation of gallium oxide nano-spindles is explained by invoking the phenomenon of oriented attachment, as amply supported by electron microscopy. Interestingly, the morphology of the gallium oxide nano-spindles remained conserved even after doping them with more than 1.4 at% of La3+ ions. Such robust structural stability could be attributed to the oriented attachment-type growth observed in the nano-spindles. The as-prepared samples and the corresponding annealed ones were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, and STEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, photoluminescence from the single-crystalline undoped and La-doped beta-Ga2O3 was explored.

Oxidation of NADH by rat erythrocyte plasma membrane was stimulated by about 50-fold on addition of decavanadate, but not other forms of vanadate like orthovanadate, metavanadate aad vanadyl sulphate. The vanadate-stimulated activity was observed only in phosphate buffer while other buffers like Tris, acetate, borate and Hepes were ineffective. Oxygen was consumed during the oxidation of NADH and the products were found to be NAD+ and hydrogen peroxide. The reaction had a stoichiometry of one mole of oxygen consumption and one mole of H2O2 production for every mole of NADH that was oxidized. Superoxide dismutase and manganous inhibited the activity indicating the involvement of superoxide anions. Electron spin resonance in the presence of a spin trap, 5, 5prime-dimethyl pyrroline N-oxide, indicated the presence of superoxide radicals. Electron spin resonance studies also showed the appearance of VIV species by reduction of VV of decavanadate indicating thereby participation of vanadate in the redox reaction. Under the conditions of the assay, vanadate did not stimulate lipid peroxidation in erythrocyte membranes. Extracts from lipid-free preparations of the erythrocyte membrane showed full activity. This ruled out the possibility of oxygen uptake through lipid peroxidation. The vanadate-stimulated NADH oxidation activity could be partially solubilized by treating erythrocyte membranes either with Triton X-100 or sodium cholate. Partially purified enzyme obtained by extraction with cholate and fractionation by ammonium sulphate and DEAE-Sephadex was found to be unstable.

Vanadate in the polymeric form of decavanadate, but not other forms, stimulated oxidation of NADH to NAD+ NADPH was also oxidized with comparable rates. This oxidation of NADH was accompanied by uptake of oxygen and generated hydrogen peroxide with the following stoichiometry: NADH + H+ + O2 → NAD+ + H2O2. The reaction followed second-order kinetics. The rate was dependent on the concentration of both NADH and vanadate and increased with decreasing pH. The reaction had an obligatory requirement for phosphate ions. Esr studies in the presence of the spin trap dimethyl pyrroline N oxide indicated the involvement of Superoxide anion as an intermediate. The reaction was sensitive to Superoxide dismutase and other scavengers of superoxide anions.

Manganese dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction route at different growth temperatures of 40 degrees C, 80 degrees C, 100 degrees C and were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) analysis. FESEM results show that on increasing growth temperature the morphology changes from clusters into mixture of rods and flakes. XPS analysis reveals the formation of MnO2. Then these particles were immobilized on Pt electrode. A platinum (Pt) electrode modified with low dimensional MnO2 was investigated as a chronoamperometric (CA) sensor for hydrogen peroxide sensing (H2O2). The sample prepared at 100 degrees C shows good electrocatalytic ability for H2O2 sensing when compared with the samples prepared at 40 degrees C and 80 degrees C. At an operating potential of 0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl catalytic oxidation of the analyte is measured for chronoamperometric (CA) monitoring. The CA signals are linearly proportional to the concentration of H2O2. It is also found that the morphology of the nanostructure plays a vital role in the detection of H2O2. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. We propose an architecture for dramatically enhancing the stress bearing and energy absorption capacities of a polymer based composite. Different weight fractions of iron oxide nano-particles (NPs) are mixed in a poly(dimethylesiloxane) (PDMS) matrix either uniformly or into several vertically aligned cylindrical pillars. These composites are compressed up to a strain of 60% at a strain rate of 0.01 s(-1) following which they are fully unloaded at the same rate. Load bearing and energy absorption capacities of the composite with uniform distribution of NPs increase by similar to 50% upon addition of 5 wt% of NPs; however, these properties monotonically decrease with further addition of NPs so much so that the load bearing capacity of the composite becomes 1/6th of PDMS upon addition of 20 wt% of NPs. On the contrary, stress at a strain of 60% and energy absorption capacity of the composites with pillar configuration monotonically increase with the weight fraction of NPs in the pillars wherein the load bearing capacity becomes 1.5 times of PDMS when the pillars consisted of 20 wt% of NPs. In situ mechanical testing of composites with pillars reveals outward bending of the pillars wherein the pillars and the PDMS in between two pillars, located along a radius, are significantly compressed. Reasoning based on effects of compressive hydrostatic stress and shape of fillers is developed to explain the observed anomalous strengthening of the composite with pillar architecture.
Heat exposure and hypothyroid conditions decrease hydrogen peroxide generation in liver mitochondria
Resumo:
Exposure of rats to heat (39 +/- 1 degree C) decreased H2O2 generation in mitochondria of the liver, but not of the kidney or the heart. The effect was obtained with three substrates, succinate, glycerol 1-phosphate and choline, with a decrease to 50% in the first 2-3 days of exposure, and a further decrease on longer exposure. The dehydrogenase activity with only glycerol 1-phosphate decreased, which is indicative of the hypothyroid condition, whereas choline dehydrogenase activity remained unchanged and that of succinate dehydrogenase decreased on long exposure. The serum concentration of thyroxine decreased in heat-exposed rats. Thyroxine treatment of rats increased H2O2 generation. Hypothyroid conditions obtained by treatment with propylthiouracil or thyroidectomy caused a decrease in H2O2 generation and changes in dehydrogenase activities similar to those with heat exposure. Treatment of heat-exposed or thyroidectomized rats with thyroxine stimulated H2O2 generation by a mechanism apparently involving fresh protein synthesis. The results indicate that H2O2 generation in mitochondria of heat-exposed animals is determined by thyroid status.
