The application of multilevel control strategies for load-frequency control of interconnected power systems is assuming importance. A large multiarea power system may be viewed as an interconnection of several lower-order subsystems, with possible change of interconnection pattern during operation. The solution of the control problem involves the design of a set of local optimal controllers for the individual areas, in a completely decentralised environment, plus a global controller to provide the corrective signal to account for interconnection effects. A global controller, based on the least-square-error principle suggested by Siljak and Sundareshan, has been applied for the LFC problem. A more recent work utilises certain possible beneficial aspects of interconnection to permit more desirable system performances. The paper reports the application of the latter strategy to LFC of a two-area power system. The power-system model studied includes the effects of excitation system and governor controls. A comparison of the two strategies is also made.

In this paper, the control aspects of a hierarchical organization under the influence of "proportionality" policies are analyzed. Proportionality policies are those that restrict the recruitment to every level of the hierarchy (except the bottom most level or base level) to be in strict proportion to the promotions into that level. Both long term and short term control analysis have been discussed. In long term control the specific roles of the parameters of the system with regard to control of the shape and size of the system have been analyzed and yield suitable control strategies. In short term control, the attainability of a target or goal structure within a specific time from a given initial structure has been analyzed and yields the required recruitment strategies. The theoretical analyses have been illustrated with computational examples and also with real world data.

The control of such proportionality systems is then compared with that of the general systems (which do not follow such policies) with some significant conclusions. The control relations of such proportionality systems are found to be simpler and more practically feasible than those of general Markov systems, which do not have such restrictions. Such proportionality systems thus not only retain and match the flexibility of general Markov systems but also have the added advantage of simpler and more practically feasible controls. The proportionality policies hence act as an alternative and more practicably feasible means of control. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The specific objective of this paper is to develop direct digital control strategies for an ammonia reactor using quadratic regulator theory and compare the performance of the resultant control system with that under conventional PID regulators. The controller design studies are based on a ninth order state-space model obtained from the exact nonlinear distributed model using linearization and lumping approximations. The evaluation of these controllers with reference to their disturbance rejection capabilities and transient response characteristics, is carried out using hybrid computer simulation.

Due to environmental concerns, health hazards to man and the evolution of resistance in insect pests, there have been constant efforts to discover newer insecticides both from natural sources and by chemical synthesis. Natural sources for novel molecules hold promise in view of their eco-friendly nature, selectivity and mammalian safety. We have isolated one natural bioactive molecule from the leaves of Lantana camara named Coumaran, based on various physical-chemical and spectroscopic techniques (IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and MS). Coumaran is highly toxic and very low concentration is needed for control of stored product insects. This molecule has potent grain protectant potential and caused significant reduction in F1 progeny of all the three species in the treated grain and the progeny was completely suppressed at 30 mu g/l. The differences in germination between the control and treated grains were not significant. The lack of any adverse effect of Coumaran on the seed germination is highly desirable for a grain protectant, becoming a potential source of biofumigant for economical and environmentally friendly pest control strategies against stored grain pests during storage of grains or pulses. We study the optimal control problem of maximizing the spread of an information epidemic on a social network. Information propagation is modeled as a susceptible-infected (SI) process, and the campaign budget is fixed. Direct recruitment and word-of-mouth incentives are the two strategies to accelerate information spreading (controls). We allow for multiple controls depending on the degree of the nodes/individuals. The solution optimally allocates the scarce resource over the campaign duration and the degree class groups. We study the impact of the degree distribution of the network on the controls and present results for Erdos-Renyi and scale-free networks. Results show that more resource is allocated to high-degree nodes in the case of scale-free networks, but medium-degree nodes in the case of Erdos-Renyi networks. We study the effects of various model parameters on the optimal strategy and quantify the improvement offered by the optimal strategy over the static and bang-bang control strategies. The effect of the time-varying spreading rate on the controls is explored as the interest level of the population in the subject of the campaign may change over time. We show the existence of a solution to the formulated optimal control problem, which has nonlinear isoperimetric constraints, using novel techniques that is general and can be used in other similar optimal control problems. This work may be of interest to political, social awareness, or crowdfunding campaigners and product marketing managers, and with some modifications may be used for mitigating biological epidemics.

Thyristor forced commutated AC/DC convertors are useful for improving the power factor and waveform of AC-side line current. These are controlled through pulse-width modulation schemes for best performance. However, the 3-phase versions impose restrictions on the PWM strategies that can be implemented for excellent harmonic rejection. This paper presents new PWM control strategies for the 3-phase converters and compares them along with the conventional 4-pulse PWM strategy for harmonic elimination. Finally, two new PWM strategies are shown to be the best, for which oscillograms are presented from actual implementation.

Cascaded multilevel inverters synthesize a medium-voltage output based on a series connection of power cells which use standard low-voltage component configurations. This characteristic allows one to achieve high-quality output voltages and input currents and also outstanding availability due to their intrinsic component redundancy. Due to these features, the cascaded multilevel inverter has been recognized as an important alternative in the medium-voltage inverter market. This paper presents a survey of different topologies, control strategies and modulation techniques used by these inverters. Regenerative and advanced topologies are also discussed. Applications where the mentioned features play a key role are shown. Finally, future developments are addressed.

We present the theoretical foundations for the multiple rendezvous problem involving design of local control strategies that enable groups of visibility-limited mobile agents to split into subgroups, exhibit simultaneous taxis behavior towards, and eventually rendezvous at, multiple unknown locations of interest. The theoretical results are proved under certain restricted set of assumptions. The algorithm used to solve the above problem is based on a glowworm swarm optimization (GSO) technique, developed earlier, that finds multiple optima of multimodal objective functions. The significant difference between our work and most earlier approaches to agreement problems is the use of a virtual local-decision domain by the agents in order to compute their movements. The range of the virtual domain is adaptive in nature and is bounded above by the maximum sensor/visibility range of the agent. We introduce a new decision domain update rule that enhances the rate of convergence by a factor of approximately two. We use some illustrative simulations to support the algorithmic correctness and theoretical findings of the paper.

Grid connected PWM-VSIs are being increasingly used for applications such as Distributed Generation (DG), power quality, UPS etc. Appropriate control strategies for grid synchronisation and line current regulation are required to establish such a grid interconnection and power transfer. Control of three phase VSIs is widely reported in iterature. Conventionally, dq control in Synchronous Reference Frame(SRF) is employed for both PLL and line current control where PI-controllers are used to track the DC references. Single phase systems do not have defined direct (d) and quadrature (q) axis components that are required for SRF transformation. Thus, references are AC in nature and hence usage of PI controllers cannot yield zero steady state errors. Resonant controllers have the ability to track AC references accurately. In this work, a resonant controller based single phase PLL and current control technique are being employed for tracking grid frequency and the AC current reference respectively. A single phase full bridge converter is being operated as a STATCOM for performance evaluation of the control scheme.

This paper presents the analysis and study of voltage collapse at any converter bus in an AC system interconnected by multiterminal DC (MTDC) links. The analysis is based on the use of the voltage sensitivity factor (VSF) as a voltage collapse proximity indicator (VCPI). In this paper the VSF is defined as a matrix which is applicable to MTDC systems. The VSF matrix is derived from the basic steady state equations of the converter, control, DC and AC networks. The structure of the matrix enables the derivation of some of the basic properties which are generally applicable. A detailed case study of a four-terminal MTDC system is presented to illustrate the effects of control strategies at the voltage setting terminal (VST) and other terminals. The controls considered are either constant angle, DC voltage, AC voltage, reactive current and reactive power at the VST and constant power or current at the other terminals. The effect of the strength of the AC system (measured by short circuit ratio) on the VSF is investigated. Several interesting and new results are presented. An analytical expression for the self VSF at VST is also derived for some specific cases which help to explain the number of transitions in VSF around the critical values of SCR.

This paper presents the analysis and study of voltage collapse at any converter bus in A C-DC systems considering the dynamics of DC system. The problem of voltage instability is acute when HVDC links are connected to weak AC systems, the strength determined by short circuit ratio (SCR) at the converter bus. The converter control strategies are important in determining voltage instability. Small signal analysis is used to identify critical modes and evaluate the effect of AC system strength and control parameters. A sample two-terminal DC system is studied and the results compared with those obtained from static analysis. Also, the results obtained from small signal analysis are validated with nonlinear simulation.

The integration of different wireless networks, such as GSM and WiFi, as a two-tier hybrid wireless network is more popular and economical. Efficient bandwidth management, call admission control strategies and mobility management are important issues in supporting multiple types of services with different bandwidth requirements in hybrid networks. In particular, bandwidth is a critical commodity because of the type of transactions supported by these hybrid networks, which may have varying bandwidth and time requirements. In this paper, we consider such a problem in a hybrid wireless network installed in a superstore environment and design a bandwidth management algorithm based on the priority level, classification of the incoming transactions. Our scheme uses a downlink transaction scheduling algorithm, which decides how to schedule the outgoing transactions based on their priority level with efficient use of available bandwidth. The transaction scheduling algorithm is used to maximize the number of transaction-executions. The proposed scheme is simulated in a superstore environment with multi Rooms. The performance results describe that the proposed scheme can considerably improve the bandwidth utilization by reducing transaction blocking and accommodating more essential transactions at the peak time of the business.

This paper presents an analysis and comparison between two circuit topologies of the 3-phase, 3-level unity power factor (Vienna) rectifier on the basis of packaging issues and semiconductor power losses. The analysis indicates the suitability of one particular circuit variant due to restrictions on switching frequency at higher power levels. A comparison is also done between hysteresis and carrier based PWM strategies for current control of the rectifier, along with experimental evaluation of the control strategies on a hardware prototype of the rectifier. The comparison indicates that the carrier based modulation strategy is better suited for use with higher order filters that are utilized in high power applications.
