Adhesion can cause energy losses in asperities or particles coming into dynamic contact resulting in frictional dissipation, even if the deformation occurring is purely elastic. Such losses are of special significance in impact of nanoparticles and friction between surfaces under low contact pressure to hardness ratio. The objective of this work is to study the effect of adhesion during the normal impact of elastic spheres on a rigid half-space, with an emphasis on understanding the mechanism of energy loss. We use finite element method for modeling the impact phenomenon, with the adhesion due to van der Waals force and the short-range repulsion included as body forces distributed over the volume of the sphere. This approach, in contrast with commonly used surface force approximation, helps to model the interactions in a more precise way. We find that the energy loss in impact of elastic spheres is negligible unless there are adhesion-induced instabilities. Significant energy loss through elastic stress waves occurs due to jump-to-contact and jump-out-of-contact instabilities and can even result in capture of the elastic sphere on the half-space.

Atomic force Microscopy (AFM) has become a versatile tool in biology due to its advantage of high-resolution imaging of biological samples close to their native condition. Apart from imaging, AFM can also measure the local mechanical properties of the surfaces. In this study, we explore the possibility of using AFM to quantify the rough eye phenotype of Drosophila melanogaster through mechanical properties. We have measured adhesion force, stiffness and elastic modulus of the corneal lens using AFM. Various parameters affecting these measurements like cantilever stiffness and tip geometry are systematically studied and the measurement procedures are standardized. Results show that the mean adhesion force of the ommatidial surface varies from 36 nN to 16 nN based on the location. The mean stiffness is 483 +/- 5 N/m, and the elastic modulus is 3.4 +/- 0.05 GPa (95% confidence level) at the center of ommatidia. These properties are found to be different in corneal lens of eye expressing human mutant tau gene (mutant). The adhesion force, stiffness and elastic modulus are decreased in the mutant. We conclude that the measurement of surface and mechanical properties of D. melanogaster using AFM can be used for quantitative evaluation of `rough eye' surface. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Adhesive interaction between impacting bodies can cause energy loss, even in an otherwise elastic impact. Adhesion force induces tensile stress in the bodies, which modifies the stress wave profile and influences the restitution behavior. We investigate this effect by developing a finite element framework, which incorporates a Lennard-Jones-type potential for modeling the adhesive interaction between volume elements. With this framework, the classical problems in contact mechanics can be revisited without the restrictive surface-force approximation. In this paper, we study the longitudinal impact of an elastic cylinder on a rigid half-space with adhesion. In the absence of adhesion, this problem reduces to the impact between two identical cylinders in which there is no energy loss. Adhesion causes a fraction of energy in the stress waves to remain in the cylinder as residual stress waves. This apparent loss in kinetic energy is shown to be a unique function of maximum tensile strain energy. We have developed a 1-D model in terms of interaction force parameters, velocity and material properties to estimate the tensile stain energy. We show that this model can be used to predict practically important phenomena like capture wherein the impacting bodies stick together. (C) 2013 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

The surface of a soft elastic film becomes unstable and forms a self-organized undulating pattern because of adhesive interactions when it comes in contact proximity with a rigid surface. For a single film, the pattern length scale lambda, which is governed by the minimization of the elastic stored energy, gives lambda similar to 3h, where h is the film thickness. Based on a linear stability analysis and simulations of adhesion and debonding, we consider the contact instability of an elastic bilayer, which provides greater flexibility in the morphological control of interfacial instability. Unlike the case of a single film, the morphology of the contact instability patterns, debonding distance, and debonding force in a bilayer can be controlled in a nonlinear way by varying the thicknesses and shear moduli of the films. Interestingly, the pattern wavelength in a bilayer can be greatly increased or decreased compared to a single film when the adhesive contact is formed by the stiffer or the softer of the two films, respectively. In particular, lambda as small as 0.5h can be obtained. This indicates a new strategy for pattern miniaturization in elastic contact lithography.

Surface topography has been known to play an important role in the friction and transfer layer formation during sliding. In the present investigation, EN8 steel flats were ground to attain different surface roughness with unidirectional grinding marks. Pure Mg pins were scratched on these surfaces using an Inclined Scratch Tester to study the influence of directionality of surface grinding marks on coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation. Grinding angle (i.e., the angle between direction of scratch and grinding marks) was varied between 0 degrees and 90 degrees during the tests. Experiments were conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions. Scanning electron micrographs of the contact surfaces of pins and flats were used to reveal the surface features that included the morphology of the transfer layer. It was observed that the average coefficient of friction and transfer layer formation depend primarily on the directionality of the grinding marks but were independent of surface roughness on the harder mating surface. In addition, a stick-slip phenomenon was observed, the amplitude of which depended both on the directionality of grinding marks and the surface roughness of the harder mating surface. The grinding angle effect on the coefficient of friction, which consists of adhesion and plowing components, was attributed to the variation of plowing component of friction. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The use of relatively low modulus adhesive at the ends of overlap in a bi-adhesive bondline of a bonded joint can reduce the stress concentration significantly and, therefore, potentially lead to higher strength of the joint. This study presents the two-dimensional and three-dimensional nonlinear (geometric and material) finite element analyses of adhesively bonded single lap joints having modulus-graded bondline under monotonic loading conditions. The adhesives were modelled as an elasto-plastic multi-linear material, while the substrates were regarded as both linear elastic and bi-linear elasto-plastic material. The computational simulations have been performed to investigate the bondline behaviour by studying the stress and strain distributions both at the mid-plane as well as at the interface of the bondline. It has been observed that the static strength is higher for joints with bi-adhesive bondlines compared to those with single adhesives in bondline. Higher joint strength has also been observed for optimum bi-adhesive bondline ratio through parametric studies. Effects of load level, and bondline thickness on stress distribution in the bi-adhesive bondline have also been studied. 3D analysis results reveal the existence of complex multi-axial stress/strain state at the ends of the overlap in the bondline which cannot be observed in 2D plane strain analysis. About 1/3rd of the width of the joint from the free edge in the width direction has 3D stress state, especially in the compliant adhesive of the bondline. Magnitudes of longitudinal and lateral stress/strain components are comparable to peel stress/strain components. It has also been analytically shown that the in-plane global stiffness of the joint remains unaffected by modulus gradation of the bondline adhesive. (C) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2010.

Better fatigue performance of adhesively bonded joints makes them suitable for most structural applications. However, predicting the service life of bonded joints accurately remains a challenge. In this present study, nonlinear computational simulations have been performed on adhesively bonded single lap ASTM-D1002 shear joint considering both geometrical and material nonlinearities to predict the fatigue life by judiciously applying the modified Coffin-Manson equation for adhesive joints. Elasto-plastic material models have been employed for both the adhesive and the adherends. The predicted life has close agreement in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) regime with empirical observations reported in the literature. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Particulate composites based on polymer matrices generally contain fillers, especially those that are abundantly available and are cheaper. The inclusion of these, besides improving the properties, makes the system costwise viable, In the present study, fly ash was tried as a filler in epoxy. The filler particle surfaces were modified using three chemical surface treatment techniques in order to elicit the effect of adhesion at the interface on the mechanical properties of these composites. The compatibilizing of the filler with the use of a silane coupling agent yielded the best compression strength values. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been used to characterize and supplement the mechanical test data.

Bonding a fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite or metallic plate to the soffit of a reinforced concrete (RC), timber or metallic beam can significantly increase its strength and other aspects of structural performance. These hybrid beams are often found to fail due to premature debonding of the plate from the original beam in a brittle manner. This has led to the development of many analytical solutions over the last two decades to quantify the interfacial shear and normal stresses between the adherends. The adherends are subjected to axial, bending and shear deformations. However, most analytical solutions have neglected the influence of shear deformation of the adherends. For the few solutions which consider this effect in an approximate manner, their applicability is limited to one or two specific load cases. This paper presents a general analytical solution for the interfacial stresses in plated beams under an arbitrary loading with the shear deformation of the adherends duly considered. The shear stress distribution is assumed to be parabolic through the depth of the adherends in predicting the interfacial shear stress and Timoshenko's beam theory is adopted in predicting interfacial normal stress to account for the shear deformation. The solution is applicable to a beam of arbitrary prismatic cross-section bonded symmetrically or asymmetrically with a thin or thick plate, both having linear elastic material properties. The effect of shear deformation is illustrated through an example beam. The influence of material and geometric parameters of the adherends and adhesive on the interfacial stress concentrations at the plate end is discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The assembly of aerospace and automotive structures in recent years is increasingly carried out using adhesives. Adhesive joints have advantages of uniform stress distribution and less stress concentration in the bonded region. Nevertheless, they may suffer due to the presence of defects in bond line and at the interface or due to improper curing process. While defects like voids, cracks and delaminations present in the adhesive bond line may be detected using different NDE methods, interfacial defects in the form of kissing bond may go undetected. Attempts using advanced ultrasonic methods like nonlinear ultrasound and guided wave inspection to detect kissing bond have met with limited success stressing the need for alternate methods. This paper concerns the preliminary studies carried out on detectability of dry contact kissing bonds in adhesive joints using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In this attempt, adhesive joint samples containing varied area of kissing bond were prepared using the glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRP) as substrates and epoxy resin as the adhesive layer joining them. The samples were also subjected to conventional and high power ultrasonic inspection. Further, these samples were loaded till failure to determine the bond strength during which digital images were recorded and analyzed using the DIC method. This noncontact method could indicate the existence of kissing bonds at less than 50% failure load. Finite element studies carried out showed a similar trend. Results obtained from these preliminary studies are encouraging and further tests need to be done on a larger set of samples to study experimental uncertainties and scatter associated with the method. The polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer prevents HIV-1 entry into target cells in vitro. Its mechanism of action, however, remains unclear and precludes the design of potent dendrimers targeting HIV-1 entry. We employed steered molecular dynamics simulations to examine whether the HIV-1 gp120-CD4 complex is a target of PAMAM. Our simulations mimicked single molecule force spectroscopy studies of the unbinding of the gp120-CD4 complex under the influence of a controlled external force. We found that the complex dissociates via complex pathways and defies the standard classification of adhesion molecules as catch and slip bonds. When the force loading rate was large, the complex behaved as a slip bond, weakening gradually. When the loading rate was small, the complex initially strengthened, akin to a catch bond, but eventually dissociated over shorter separations than with large loading rates. PAMAM docked to gp120 and destabilized the gp120-CD4 complex. The rupture force of the complex was lowered by PAMAM. PAMAM disrupted salt bridges and hydrogen bonds across the gp120-CD4 interface and altered the hydration pattern of the hydrophobic cavity in the interface. In addition, intriguingly, PAMAM suppressed the distinction in the dissociation pathways of the complex between the small and large loading rate regimes. Taken together, our simulations reveal that PAMAM targets the gp120-CD4 complex at two levels: it weakens the complex and also alters its dissociation pathway, potentially inhibiting HIV-1 entry.

Adhesives are widely used to execute the assembly of aerospace and automotive structures due to their ability to join dissimilar materials, reduced stress concentration, and improved fatigue resistance. The mechanical behavior of adhesive joints can be studied either using analytical models or by conducting mechanical tests. However, the complexity owing to multiple interfaces, layers with different properties, material and geometric nonlinearity and its three-dimensional nature combine to increase the difficulty in obtaining an overall system of governing equations to predict the joint behavior. On the other hand, experiments are often time consuming and expensive due to a number of parameters involved. Finite element analysis (FEA) is profoundly used in recent years to overcome these limitations. The work presented in this paper involves the finite element modeling and analysis of a composite single lap joint where the adhesive-adherend interface region was modeled using connector elements. The computed stresses were compared with the experimental stresses obtained using digital image correlation technique. The results showed an agreement. Further, the failure load predicted using FEA was found to be closer to the actual failure load obtained by mechanical tests.

Textured silicon (Si) substrate were prepared using various texturing methods both chemical and physical and their water contact angle, surface topography and Raman spectra were studied and investigated. The effect of plasma and chemical treatment on micro/nanostructure and roughness of the surface with and without deposition of Octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS, Cl3Si (CH3)(17)), self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is investigated for achieving higher water contact angle (theta(c)). The importance of synergism of texturing with deposition of ODTS SAM in preparing superhydrophobic silicon surfaces has been discussed. It is shown that superhydrophobic silicon surfaces can be achieved on silicon surfaces by coating with ODTS, irrespective of whether it is textured or not, polished or unpolished, provided a chemical treatment is given to the surface prior to the ODTS coating.
