India has been acknowledged as a large reservoir of nature's random mutation, an original 'rich' source of knowledge in the context of international genome studies. Human genome knowledge and the possible understanding of the basis of uniqueness of each individual in chemical terms has presented a number of inescapable challenges to our own jurisprudence philosophies and our ethical sensibilities.

Hypoeutectic boron addition (0.1 wt.%) to Ti-6Al-4V is known to cause significant refinement of the cast microstructure. In the present investigation, it has been observed that trace boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy also ensures excellent microstructural homogeneity throughout the ingot. A subdued thermal gradient, related to the basic grain refinement mechanism by constitutional undercooling, persists during solidification for the boron-containing alloy and maintains equivalent beta grain growth kinetics at different locations in the ingot. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy shows relatively strong texture with preferred components (e.g. ingot axis parallel to[0 0 0 1] or [1 0 (1) over bar 0]) over the entire ingot and gradual transition of texture components along the radius. For Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy, significant weakening characterizes both the high-temperature beta and room-temperature a texture. In addition to solidification factors that are responsible for weak beta texture development, microstructural differences due to boron addition, e.g. the absence of grain boundary alpha phase and presence of TiB particles, strongly affects the mechanism of beta -> alpha phase transformation and consequently weakens the alpha phase texture. Based on the understanding developed for the boron-modified alloy, a novel mechanism has been proposed for the microstructure and texture formation during solidification and phase transformation. The study is the first report of the utilization of a crown ether as a new and versatile resolving agent for the diffusion edited separation of enantiomers, complex mixtures and constitutional isomers. As a consequence of different binding affinities of enantiomers of a chiral molecule and individual components of the complex mixtures with the crown ether, the molecules diffuse at different rates. The enhanced separation achieved due to matrix assisted diffusion permitted their separation in the diffusion dimension. The generality and wide utility of the new resolving agent and the methodology are demonstrated on diverse examples, such as an organic chiral molecule, constitutional isomers and complex mixture of molecules possessing different functional groups that possess nearly identical molecular weights.

Three isomeric meso-SiMe3C6H4 substituted BODIPYs have been synthesized and their optical properties studied. The constitutional isomers show similar absorption properties but vastly different emissive properties as a result of their different conformational flexibility. Fluorine-19 NMR study is used to unravel the conformational state of the BODIPY isomers at a molecular level. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
