Variable cross-sectional area ducts are often used for attenuation at lower frequencies (of the order of firing frequency), whereas concentric tube resonators provide attenuation at relatively higher frequencies. In this paper, analysis of one dimensional control volume approach of conical concentric tube resonators is validated experimentally. The effects of mean flow and taper are investigated. The experimental setup is specially designed to measure the pressure transfer function in the form of Level Difference or Noise Reduction across the test muffler. It is shown that there is a reasonably good agreement between the predicted values of the Noise Reduction and the measured ones for incompressible mean flow as well as stationary medium. In-flight collection of air, pre-cooling, liquefaction and separation of liquid oxygen (LOX) are key technologies for futuristic launch vehicles, Vortex tube technology is one of the few potential technologies for this application. Extensive studies have been carried out on straight and conical vortex tubes for developing vortex tube technology for high purity LOX separation. Studies show that 12mm. diameter conical vortex tube with L/D of 10 could achieve LOX purity of similar to 96% with separation efficiency of similar to 14% indicating that it is not possible to obtain both high LOX purity and high separation efficiency simultaneously in a single vortex tube. However, it is possible to achieve both high LOX purity and separation efficiency by staging of vortex tubes. LOX purity of 96% and separation efficiency of similar to 73.5% has been achieved for second stage vortex tube supplied with pre-cooled air having 60% oxygen purity. LOX purity has been further increased to 97% by applying controlled heating power over liquid oxygen flowing discharge surface of the vortex tube.

An equation governing the excess pressure has been derived, for an axially tethered and stenosed elastic tube filled with viscous liquid, by introducing the elasticity of the tube through pressure-area relation. This equation is solved numerically for large Womersley parameter and the results are presented for different types of pressure-radius relations and geometries by prescribing an outgoing wave suffering attenuation at some axial point of the tube. For a locally constricted tube it is observed that the pressure oscillates more and generates sound on the down stream side of the constriction.

A method of ion extraction from plasmas is reported in which the interference of field lines due to the extraction system in the plasma region is avoided by proper shaping of the extractor electrode and is supported by field plots.

mathematical model for the steady flow of non-Newtonian fluid through a stenotic region is presented. The results indicate that the general shape and size of the stenosis together with rheological properties of blood are important in understanding the flow characteristics and the presence of flow separation.

Acoustic impedance of a termination, or of a passive subsystem, needs to be measured not only for acoustic lining materials but also in the exhaust systems of flow machinery, where mean flow introduces peculiar problems. Out of the various methods of measurement of acoustic impedance, the discrete frequency, steady state, impedance tube method [1] is most reliable, though time consuming, and requires no special instrumentation.

The phenomenon of drop formation at conical tips under near zero flow conditions has been investigated using a theoretical approach. The analysis permits the prediction of drop profile and drop volume, until the onset of instability. A semiempirical approach based on the similarity of drop shapes has been adopted to predict the detaching drop volumes at conical tips. The effects of base diameter of the cone, cone angle, interfacial tension, and the densities of the drop and the surrounding fluid on the maximum and detached drop volumes are predicted.

An oscillatory flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in an elastic tube of variable cross section has been investigated at low Reynolds number. The equations governing, the flow are derived under the assumption that the variation of the cross-section is slow in the axial direction for a tethered tube. The problem is then reduced to that of solving for the excess pressure from a second order ordinary differential equation with complex valued Bessel functions as the coefficients. This equation has been solved numerically for geometries of physiological interest and a comparison is made with some of the known theoretical and experimental results.

Oscillatory flow in a tube of slowly varying cross section is investigated in the presence of a uniform magnetic field in the axial direction. A perturbation solution including steady streaming is presented. The pressure and shear stress on the wall for various parameters governing the flow are discussed. In this paper we have discussed the motion of a viscous fluid with suspended particles through a curved tube of small curvature ratio. The system is treated as two separate interacting continua. Solutions for axial and secondary velocities are obtained in the form of asymptotic expansions in powers of Dean Number. The streamline pattern for the particulate phase reveals many interesting features. The influence of the particulate continium on the fluid is described by the parameter τ which depends on the density ratio of the two continua. The concentration distribution of the particles in a given cross section is determined. It is noticed that the particles move closer to the wall for certain values of the concentration and the density ratio.

Consummating our earlier work [1], the unsteady flow of a fairly concentrated suspension due to a single contraction or expansion of the walls of a tube is studied. A comparison of the results obtained by using two different formulae for the additional drag terms in the governing equations has been made. A region of circulation in the flow field is observed when the volume fraction Z greater-or-equal, slanted 0.3, the Schmidt number Sc < 1 and the density ratio (density of the particulate phase/density of the fluid phase) > 1.

Recently established moderate size free piston driven hypersonic shock tunnel HST3 along with its calibration is described here. The extreme thermodynamic conditions prevalent behind the reflected shock wave have been utilized to study the catalytic and non-catalytic reactions of shock heated test gases like Ar, N2 or O2 with different material like C60 carbon, zirconia and ceria substituted zirconia. The exposed test samples are investigated using different experimental methods. These studies show the formation of carbon nitride due to the non-catalytic interaction of shock heated nitrogen gas with C60 carbon film. On the other hand, the ZrO2 undergoes only phase transformation from cubic to monoclinic structure and Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 in fluorite cubic phase changes to pyrochlore (Ce2Zr2O7±δ) phase by releasing oxygen from the lattice due to heterogeneous catalytic surface reaction.
