The photoinduced hydrogen elimination reaction in thiophenol via the conical intersections of the dissociative (1)pi sigma* excited state with the bound (1)pi pi* excited state and the electronic ground state has been investigated with ab initio electronic-structure calculations and time-dependent quantum wave-packet calculations. A screening of the coupling constants of the symmetry-allowed coupling modes at the (1)pi pi*-(1)pi sigma* and (1)pi sigma*-S-0 conical intersection shows that the SH torsional mode is by far the most important coupling mode at both conical intersections. A model including three intersecting potential-energy surfaces (S-0, (1)pi pi*, (1)pi sigma*) and two nuclear degrees of freedom (SH stretch and SH torsion) has been constructed on the basis of ab initio complete-active-space self-consistent field and multireference second-order perturbation theory calculations. The nonadiabatic quantum wave-packet dynamics initiated by optical excitation of the (1)pi pi* and (1)pi sigma* states has been explored for this three-state two-coordinate model. The photodissociation dynamics is characterized in terms of snapshots of time-dependent wave packets, time-dependent electronic population probabilities, and the branching ratio of the (2)sigma/(2)pi electronic states of the thiophenoxyl radical. The dependence of the timescale of the photodissociation process and the branching ratio on the initial excitation of the SH stretching and SH torsional vibrations has been analyzed. It is shown that the node structure, which is imposed on the nuclear wave packets by the initial vibrational preparation as well as by the transitions through the conical intersections, has a profound effect on the photodissociation dynamics. The effect of additional weak coupling modes of CC twist (nu(16a)) and ring-distortion (nu(16b)) character has been investigated with three-dimensional and four-dimensional time-dependent wave-packet calculations, and has been found to be minor. This paper deals with the manifestations of conical intersections (CIs), unequivocal spectroscopic signatures of which are still elusive, in the resonance Raman intensities. In particular, the results of our calculations on the `two state-two vibrational mode' and the `two state-three vibrational mode' models are presented. The models comprise two excited states of different spatial symmetry, one bright and one dark, which are coupled by a nontotally symmetric mode while the energy gap between them is tuned by one/two totally symmetric modes. Time dependent theory for vibronically coupled states is employed for the calculation and analysis of Raman excitation profiles (REPs). The manifestation of intersections in REPs is studied by extensive modelm calculations and the results of two specific models are presented. Themfeasibility of using REPs to probe the role of CIs in polyatomic systems is ascertained by multimode calculations on two polyatomic systems viz., pyrazine and trans-azobenzene. The study also notes the importance of the pump excitation wavelength dependence in a femtosecond time-resolved experiment probing the intersection-induced nonadiabatic dynamics. Sets of multivalued dependencies (MVDs) having conflict-free covers are important to the theory and design of relational databases [2,12,15,16]. Their desirable properties motivate the problem of testing a set M of MVDs for the existence of a confiict-free cover. In [8] Goodman and Tay have proposed an approach based on the possible equivalence of M to a single (acyclic) join dependency (JD). We remark that their characterization does not lend an insight into the nature of such sets of MVDs. Here, we use notions that are intrinsic to MVDs to develop a new characterization. Our approach proceeds in two stages. In the first stage, we use the notion of “split-free” sets of MVDs and obtain a characterization of sets M of MVDs having split-free covers. In the second, we use the notion of “intersection” of MVDs to arrive at a necessary and sufficient condition for a split-free set of MVDs to be conflict-free. Based on our characterizations, we also give polynomial-time algorithms for testing whether M has split-free and conflict-free covers. The highlight of our approach is the clear insight it provides into the nature of sets of MVDs having conflict-free covers. Less emphasis is given in this paper to the actual efficiency of the algorthms. Finally, as a bonus, we derive a desirable property of split-free sets of MVDs,thereby showing that they are interesting in their own right.

The phenomenon of drop formation at conical tips under near zero flow conditions has been investigated using a theoretical approach. The analysis permits the prediction of drop profile and drop volume, until the onset of instability. A semiempirical approach based on the similarity of drop shapes has been adopted to predict the detaching drop volumes at conical tips. The effects of base diameter of the cone, cone angle, interfacial tension, and the densities of the drop and the surrounding fluid on the maximum and detached drop volumes are predicted.

The subspace intersection method (SIM) provides unbiased bearing estimates of multiple acoustic sources in a range-independent shallow ocean using a one-dimensional search without prior knowledge of source ranges and depths. The original formulation of this method is based on deployment of a horizontal linear array of hydrophones which measure acoustic pressure. In this paper, we extend SIM to an array of acoustic vector sensors which measure pressure as well as all components of particle velocity. Use of vector sensors reduces the minimum number of sensors required by a factor of 4, and also eliminates the constraint that the intersensor spacing should not exceed half wavelength. The additional information provided by the vector sensors leads to performance enhancement in the form of lower estimation error and higher resolution.

Recently it has been proved that any arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundle of rank two on a general, smooth hypersurface of degree at least three and dimension at least four is a sum of line bundles. When the dimension of the hypersurface is three, a similar result is true provided the degree of the hypersurface is at least six. We extend these results to complete intersection subvarieties by proving that any ACM bundle of rank two on a general, smooth complete intersection subvariety of sufficiently high multi-degree and dimension at least four splits. We also obtain partial results in the case of threefolds.

A thermal stress problem of a spherical shell with a conical nozzle is solved using a continuum approach. The thermal loading consists of a steady temperature which is uniform on the inner and outer surfaces of the shell and the conical nozzle but may vary linearly across the thickness. The thermal stress problem is converted to an equivalent boundary value problem and boundary conditions are specified at the junction of the spherical shell and conical nozzle. The stresses are obtained for a uniform increase in temperature and for a linear variation of temperature across the thickness of the shell, and are presented in graphical form for ready use.

The paper deals with the flow and heat-transfer problem of a steady axisymmetric laminar incompressible boundary layer swirling flow of a fluid through a conical hydrocyclone. The implicit finitedifference scheme is used to solve the partial differential equations governing the flow. The effect of swirl is found to be more pronounced on the longitudinal skin friction than on the tangential skin friction and heat transfer. The skin friction and heat transfer increase with swirl or with longitudinal distance. Swirl also gives rise to velocity overshoot in the longitudinal velocity profiles and the magnitude of the velocity overshoot increases as the swirl parameter increases. The results are found to be in good agreement with those of the local nonsimilarity and momentum integral methods but they differ appreciably from those of the local similarity method except for the longitudinal skin friction which is fairly in good agreement with that of the local similarity method.Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Strömung und dem Wärmeübergang in einem konischen Zyklon unter der Voraussetzung stationärer, achsensymmetrischer, laminarer, inkompressibler Grenzschichtströmung. Ein implizites Differenzenverfahren wird benutzt, um die partiellen Differentialgleichungen zu lösen. Der Einfluß des Dralls ist besonders ausgeprägt auf die longitudinale Komponente der Oberflächenreibung, weniger dagegen bei der tangentialen Komponente und beim Wärmeübergang. Die Oberflächenreibung und der Wärmeübergang nehmen zu mit dem Drall, sowie mit dem longitudinalen Abstand. Der Drall erzeugt ein Überschießen der Geschwindigkeit in der longitudinalen Abstand. Der Drall erzeugt ein Überschießen der Geschwindigkeit in der Längsrichtung. Die Größe des Überschusses nimmt mit wachsendem Drallparameter zu. Die Resultate stimmen gut mit den Ergebnissen der Theorie der lokalen Nichtähnlichkeit und der Impulsintegralmethode überein. Dagegen weichen sie mit Ausnahme der longitudinalen Komponente der Oberflächenreibung beträchtlich von den Resultaten der Theorie der lokalen Ähnlichkeit ab.

Blocks of 3Y-TZP were indented with conical diamond indenters. indentation caused tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation in a subsurface. Of the cracks generated in the subsurface, radial and lateral cracks can be accounted for by a continuum model of the indented subsurface, built using a combination of the Boussinesq and blister stress fields. Additional ring, median and cone cracks were also observed. It is hypothesized that the latter are motivated by the reduction in blister strength or residual energy brought about by the material damage caused by the phase transformation. This damage reduces the load bearing capacity of the material progressively with increasing normal load.

Variable cross-sectional area ducts are often used for attenuation at lower frequencies (of the order of firing frequency), whereas concentric tube resonators provide attenuation at relatively higher frequencies. In this paper, analysis of one dimensional control volume approach of conical concentric tube resonators is validated experimentally. The effects of mean flow and taper are investigated. The experimental setup is specially designed to measure the pressure transfer function in the form of Level Difference or Noise Reduction across the test muffler. It is shown that there is a reasonably good agreement between the predicted values of the Noise Reduction and the measured ones for incompressible mean flow as well as stationary medium. We consider the following question: Let S (1) and S (2) be two smooth, totally-real surfaces in C-2 that contain the origin. If the union of their tangent planes is locally polynomially convex at the origin, then is S-1 boolean OR S-2 locally polynomially convex at the origin? If T (0) S (1) a (c) T (0) S (2) = {0}, then it is a folk result that the answer is yes. We discuss an obstruction to the presumed proof, and provide a different approach. When dim(R)(T0S1 boolean AND T0S2) = 1, we present a geometric condition under which no consistent answer to the above question exists. We then discuss conditions under which we can expect local polynomial convexity.
