We prove that the group of continuous isometries for the Kobayashi or Caratheodory metrics of a strongly convex domain in C-n is compact unless the domain is biholomorphic to the ball. A key ingredient, proved using differential geometric ideas, is that a continuous isometry between a strongly convex domain and the ball has to be biholomorphic or anti-biholomorphic. Combining this with a metric version of Pinchuk's rescaling technique gives the main result.

Electrochemical capacitors are electrochemical devices with fast and highly reversible charge-storage and discharge capabilities. The devices are attractive for energy storage particularly in applications involving high-power requirements. Electrochemical capacitors employ two electrodes and an aqueous or a non-aqueous electrolyte, either in liquid or solid form; the latter provides the advantages of compactness, reliability, freedom from leakage of any liquid component and a large operating potential-window. One of the classes of solid electrolytes used in capacitors is polymer-based and they generally consist of dry solid-polymer electrolytes or gel-polymer electrolyte or composite-polymer electrolytes. Dry solid-polymer electrolytes suffer from poor ionic-conductivity values, between 10(-8) and 10(-7) S cm(-1) under ambient conditions, but are safer than gel-polymer electrolytes that exhibit high conductivity of ca. 10(-3) S cm(-1) under ambient conditions. The aforesaid polymer-based electrolytes have the advantages of a wide potential window of ca. 4 V and hence can provide high energy-density. Gel-polymer electrolytes are generally prepared using organic solvents that are environmentally malignant. Hence, replacement of organic solvents with water in gel-polymer electrolytes is desirable which also minimizes the device cost substantially. The water containing gel-polymer electrolytes, called hydrogel-polymer electrolytes, are, however, limited by a low operating potential-window of only about 1.23 V. This article reviews salient features of electrochemical capacitors employing hydrogel-polymer electrolytes.

It has been shown in an earlier paper that I-realizability of a unate function F of up to six variables corresponds to ' compactness ' of the plot of F on a Karnaugh map. Here, an algorithm has been presented to synthesize on a Karnaugh map a non-threahold function of up to Bix variables with the minimum number of threshold gates connected in cascade. Incompletely specified functions can also be treated. No resort to inequalities is made and no pre-processing (such as positivizing and ordering) of the given switching function is required.

Wave pipelining is a design technique for increasing the throughput of a digital circuit or system without introducing pipelining registers between adjacent combinational logic blocks in the circuit/system. However, this requires balancing of the delays along all the paths from the input to the output which comes the way of its implementation. Static CMOS is inherently susceptible to delay variation with input data, and hence, receives a low priority for wave pipelined digital design. On the other hand, ECL and CML, which are amenable to wave pipelining, lack the compactness and low power attributes of CMOS. In this paper we attempt to exploit wave pipelining in CMOS technology. We use a single generic building block in Normal Process Complementary Pass Transistor Logic (NPCPL), modeled after CPL, to achieve equal delay along all the propagation paths in the logic structure. An 8×8 b multiplier is designed using this logic in a 0.8 ?m technology. The carry-save multiplier architecture is modified suitably to support wave pipelining, viz., the logic depth of all the paths are made identical. The 1 mm×0.6 mm multiplier core supports a throughput of 400 MHz and dissipates a total power of 0.6 W. We develop simple enhancements to the NPCPL building blocks that allow the multiplier to sustain throughputs in excess of 600 MHz. The methodology can be extended to introduce wave pipelining in other circuits as well

Three classification techniques, namely, K-means Cluster Analysis (KCA), Fuzzy Cluster Analysis (FCA), and Kohonen Neural Networks (KNN) were employed to group 25 microwatersheds of Kherthal watershed, Rajasthan into homogeneous groups for formulating the basis for suitable conservation and management practices. Ten parameters, mainly, morphological, namely, drainage density (D-d), bifurcation ratio (R-b), stream frequency (F-u), length of overland flow (L-o), form factor (R-f), shape factor (B-s), elongation ratio (R-e), circulatory ratio (R-c), compactness coefficient (C-c) and texture ratio (T) are used for the classification. Optimal number of groups is chosen, based on two cluster validation indices Davies-Bouldin and Dunn's. Comparative analysis of various clustering techniques revealed that 13 microwatersheds out of 25 are commonly suggested by KCA, FCA and KNN i.e., 52%; 17 microwatersheds out of 25 i.e., 68% are commonly suggested by KCA and FCA whereas these are 16 out of 25 in FCA and KNN (64%) and 15 out of 25 in KNN and CA (60%). It is observed from KNN sensitivity analysis that effect of various number of epochs (1000, 3000, 5000) and learning rates (0.01, 0.1-0.9) on total squared error values is significant even though no fixed trend is observed. Sensitivity analysis studies revealed that microwatershecls have occupied all the groups even though their number in each group is different in case of further increase in the number of groups from 5 to 6, 7 and 8. Consider a sequence of closed, orientable surfaces of fixed genus g in a Riemannian manifold M with uniform upper bounds on the norm of mean curvature and area. We show that on passing to a subsequence, we can choose parametrisations of the surfaces by inclusion maps from a fixed surface of the same genus so that the distance functions corresponding to the pullback metrics converge to a pseudo-metric and the inclusion maps converge to a Lipschitz map. We show further that the limiting pseudo-metric has fractal dimension two. As a corollary, we obtain a purely geometric result. Namely, we show that bounds on the mean curvature, area and genus of a surface F subset of M, together with bounds on the geometry of M, give an upper bound on the diameter of F. Our proof is modelled on Gromov's compactness theorem for J-holomorphic curves.

In data mining, an important goal is to generate an abstraction of the data. Such an abstraction helps in reducing the space and search time requirements of the overall decision making process. Further, it is important that the abstraction is generated from the data with a small number of disk scans. We propose a novel data structure, pattern count tree (PC-tree), that can be built by scanning the database only once. PC-tree is a minimal size complete representation of the data and it can be used to represent dynamic databases with the help of knowledge that is either static or changing. We show that further compactness can be achieved by constructing the PC-tree on segmented patterns. We exploit the flexibility offered by rough sets to realize a rough PC-tree and use it for efficient and effective rough classification. To be consistent with the sizes of the branches of the PC-tree, we use upper and lower approximations of feature sets in a manner different from the conventional rough set theory. We conducted experiments using the proposed classification scheme on a large-scale hand-written digit data set. We use the experimental results to establish the efficacy of the proposed approach. In our work we have used the atomic hydrogen [HΙ] gas distribution in the HΙ 21-cm line emission to study the dark matter halo perturbations. For tHΙs analysis, the 2-D HΙ surface density and velocity maps (arcHΙval) of the galaxies in the Eridanus group (obtained using the GMRT) and in the Ursa Major group (obtained from WSRT) were used. In addition a few HΙckson Compact Groups of galaxies were also studied using the GMRT. The HΙ maps of these galaxies were Fourier analysed to estimate the asymmetry in the distribution and motion of gas. The average asymmetry parameter in the 1.5 to 2.5 K′-band scale lengths was found to be ~ 0.27 for the Eridanus group of galaxies wHΙle it was ~ 0.14 for the Ursa Major group of galaxies. The asymmetries in the distribution of HΙ as a function of Hubble type of galaxies were also studied and was found to be directly correlated with the compactness of the groups. In addition, the trend in the asymmetry as a function of the Hubble type of galaxies was opposite to that seen in the field galaxies, i.e., in the group galaxies, the early type galaxies showed more asymmetry than late type. These two aspects indicated that tidal interactions between the galaxies in a group environment to be the major cause of asymmetries. The observed asymmetry parameters were consistent with recent numerical simulations of asymmetries of gas disk caused by fly-by interactions. We have also estimated the perturbation of dark matter halo using the asymmetry parameter obtained from the Fourier series analysis of the surface density maps.

Temperature dependent Brillouin scattering studies have been performed to ascertain the influence of solvent dynamics on ion-transport in succinonitrile-lithium salt plastic crystalline electrolytes. Though very rarely employed, we observe that Brillouin spectroscopy is an invaluable tool for investigation of solvent dynamics. Analysis of various acoustic (long wavelength) phonon modes observed in the Brillouin scattering spectra reveal the influence of trans-gauche isomerism and as well as ion-association effects on ion transport. Although pristine SN and dilute SN-LiClO(4) samples show only the bulk longitudinal-acoustic (LA) mode, concentrated SN-LiClO(4) (similar to 0.3-1 M) electrolytes display both the bulk LA mode as well as salt induced brillouin modes at ambient temperature. The appearance of more than one brillouin mode is attributed to the scattering of light from regions with different compressibilities (''compactness''). Correspondingly, these modes show a large decrease in the full width at half-maximum (abbreviated as nu(f)) as the temperature decreases. Anomalous temperature dependent behavior of nu(f) with addition of salt could be attributed to the presence of disorder or strong coupling with a neighbor. The shape of the spectrum was evaluated using a Lorentzian and Fano line shape function depending on the nature and behavior of the Brillouin modes.

The spectral characteristics of a diode laser are significantly affected due to interference caused between the laser diode output and the optical feedback in the external-cavity. This optical feedback effect is of practical use for linewidth reduction, tuning or for sensing applications. A sensor based on this effect is attractive due to its simplicity, low cost and compactness. This optical sensor has been used so far, in different configuration such as for sensing displacement induced by different parameters. In this paper we report a compact optical sensor consisting of a semiconductor laser coupled to an external cavity. Theoretical analysis of the self- mixing interference for optical sensing applications is given for moderate optical feedback case. A comparison is made with our experimental observations. Experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated power modulation based on self-mixing interference theory. Displacements as small as 10-4 nm have been measured using this sensor. The developed sensor showed a fringe sensitivity of one fringe per 400nm displacement for reflector distance of around 10cms. The sensor has also been tested for magnetic field and temperature induced displacement measurements.

Some low-surface-brightness galaxies are known to have extremely thin stellar discs with the vertical-to-planar axes ratio 0.1 or less, often referred to as superthin galaxies. Although their existence is now known for over three decades, the physical origin of the superthin discs is still not understood. We model the vertical thickness of the stellar disc using our model of a two-component (gravitationally coupled stars and gas) disc embedded in a dark matter halo, for a bulgeless, superthin galaxy UGC 7321 which has a dense, compact halo, and is compare with a typical dwarf irregular galaxy Holmberg II which has a low-density, non-compact halo. We show that while the presence of gas does constrain the stellar disc thickness and hence its axial ratio, it is the compact dark matter halo which plays the decisive role in determining the mean distribution of stars in the vertical direction in low-luminosity bulgeless galaxies like UGC 7321, and causes the stellar disc to be superthin. Thus, the compactness of the dark matter halo significantly affects the disc structure and this could be important for the early evolution of galaxies.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were produced on AM50 Mg alloy in alkaline phosphate based electrolyte with montmorillonite clay additives employing current densities of 30, 60, and 120 mA/cm(2). The effect of current density on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the coating was investigated. The clay additives got melted and reactively incorporated into the coating forming an amorphous phase, at all the current densities. However, the coating was predominantly amorphous only at 30 mA/cm(2) and with increasing current density, increasing fractions of crystalline phases were formed. Higher current densities resulted in increased thickness of the coating, but reduced the compactness of the coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 0.5 wt.% (0.08 M) and 3.5 wt.% (0.6 M) NaCl solution revealed that the coatings processed at 30 mA/cm(2) exhibited a relatively better initial corrosion resistance owing to its relatively defect-free barrier layer and compactness of the coating. However, the presence of amorphous phases in significant amounts and lack of MgO in the coating resulted in increased rate of dissolution of the coatings and degradation of corrosion resistance. Coatings produced at higher current densities exhibited initial inferior corrosion resistance due to a more defective barrier layer and increased porosity in pore band and outer porous layer. However, the increased amount of crystalline phases and an increased amount of MgO, which resisted dissolution, counterbalanced the negative effects of defective barrier and increased porosity resulting in a relatively lower rate of the degradation of the corrosion resistance. Thus, the corrosion resistance of all the coatings continuously decreased with time and became similar after prolonged immersion in NaCl solution. Increasing current density, therefore, did not prove to be beneficial for the improvement of the corrosion performance of the PEO coatings. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
